Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, that isn't an option on this phone. I was trying to figure out a way, too.
I'm finding this very troublesome as well; I don't know the first names of half my contacts..
I'd really like to be able to sort "(company) last, first" again. Someone else will probably provide a fix before I learn to program on the Android platform.

The developer from Enhanced Mail (which I use) is thinking about tackling Contacts as well as email. He has done a great job making Exchange and IMAP and POP mail better. He says contacts are harder though.
It all makes me miss HTC Sense.

I started on this last night. Not sure when I can have an alpha ready, i'll aim for the weekend. there's certainly quite a bit around the contact api
I'd love some choice as to which groups display too, all contacts vs unassigned (group) contacts vs this group/several groups...
Why can't Google just support the Display As field? And proper syncing with desktop Outlook!
import/export google contacts.
Export ur contacts from gmail, to file, then delete gmail contacts on google. Then Import file to gmail. When i did this for uploading contacts to gmail it sitch all "VIEW AS" to last, first

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I won't be trying it. None of my contacts are in gmail. They're all in my Exchange. For my job I have right at 1000 contacts. The contacts are correct. Moto's Corporate Mail doesn't display them correctly.
It's such a shame Motorola can't get it together as well as HTC.

Okay this is a pretty simple question and topic but for some reason I just can't get it right. Alright well I have sync checked and sync in background checked all the options for google checked and same with facebook.
Now I heard that all contacts are automatically synced to google. Well everytime I flash a new rom and sign into my google account only like 6 gmail contacts come up. And my facebook contacts don't have the numbers I added to them.
How can I back up all of my contacts?
Sorry if this is a noob question lol
You would have to export tue contacts from you phone. Then with resultant file import the contacts to your gmail account. That should solve the problem.
I can't remember how to export the contacts but that process is what i used. And i flash about every two days due to dev porpuses.
Edit: there is an export button in the aosp messaging app. Cant find it in handcent.

I am having trouble syncing my contacts that I inputed on my Atrix to Gmail. Even if the contact is Linked to both Phone and Google, none of the contacts show up on Gmail from my computer, but if I add a contact from my computer, it shows up on my phone. How can I sync from my phone to Gmail? btw, this is my first Android device.
Thanks.
I have exactly the same issue and it's driving me nuts! Creating a new contact on the phone adds it to the "Contacts" group but there doesn't seem to be a way to get that to sync with google/gmail. Have you found a way around this?
Ok, my phone auto syncs it with contacts and gmail, but I think I know why yours isn't.
Open the contact and verify that it has a linked profile to your google account. If it does not, then link it.
If it does, go to settings > accounts > gmail account
Hit the menu button and sync. Log into your gmail account on the desktop version, not mobile version, hit contacts, click all contacts and verify.

If I create a brand new contact I can't link it to gmail because the contact does not exist in gmail. Your method only works if I have the contact in gmail/google also.
Anyone solve this yet? I'm dealing with 150 contacts or so that were imported from a sim card and trying to figure out how to get them into gmail.
I think I might be able to do export all contacts to a file, then email it to myself, then import all contacts to gmail but I'm trying to avoid CSV errors.
thunderbolt
I am having the same issue in my thunderbolt. I just rooted it and when I went to look for a contact that I added when I got the phone I realized it never was sent to my gmail account and now it is not synced.
Thunderbolt
Through some searching I found that the thunderbolt defaults to a "phone" contact when you enter one on the phone. You have to select it as a Google contact before you even put it in the phone. You can't change this after putting in the contact. I'm glad I found this out early enough so that I only lost one contact.
I had this issue and found how to solve it:
Open ContactsApp->Menu->More->Settings
Here each phone is a bit different but you will be able to choose how to set your new contacts, whether it will be on your phone contacts, a specific gmail account or all.
In My Motorola Atrix, it automatically saves to contacts (and cannot be removed) and if you have more than 1 gmail account it all gets mixed up there and you should add/select the right one.
Hope it helps.

Just to be clear, we are talking about viewing contacts on your Atrix and not viewing contacts on GMail on your PC. The point being that Motoblur does not push contacts from the various Social Networking accounts to your Google hosted Gmail contacts. I think you already know that but wanted to be sure. Did you try to delete your FB account on the Atrix and re-add. Also, and this should not make any difference, but I do not have the FB app installed. I find it a bit useless.
Where are the Google contacts stored?
The only place I can see them is when I am creating a message and tap add contact. There seems to be all the contacts from my Gmail account many of which do not have phone numbers and some of which I wouldn't want certain family members to see.
I have tried every setting in contacts and accounts I can find but no luck. I have cleaned up my Gmail account contacts and did a sync hoping that would over write them but no luck.
Any help is appreciated.

Google Contacts are stored on your phone and Google server if I am not wrong.
Regards.
By default Gmail adds anyone you email to your contacts. This used to be so annoying to most people.
Sign into Gmail on computer, go to settings, general, "create contacts for auto-complete" and check off "I'll add contacts myself".
Now go to your Contacts and start deleting the ones you don't want.
As for where they are stored, they are stored on Google's servers and not necessarily on your phone. Any changes you make either on your phone or via the web are pushed and synced I'm real time.

Yep cleaned up the contacts on the gmail account. turned of the auto add. Did a sync still have them on the phone.

I know they are stored on the phone and gmail account but where on the phone??
Can you see all the contacts when you hit the contacts tab in the phone menu?
If not then from within contacts Menu, More, Display Options and select the google contacts, under that there is a few options of what to display.
Why not try this last resort, remove your Google account on the phone and add it again.

You are the man.
Yep need google contacts on in order to see them in Contacts. Then delete them and turn off google contacts again.
Now I can rest easy.
Thank you very much

How to get contacts autofill in gmail
Hi,
I use viewsonic tablet with android 2.2 running. I have a gmail application installed . Whenever I try to send a new email or take a picture and want to send through gmail instantaneously, I get up to emal "To " field. In there it expects me to type the whole email address again. This is even true if I want to send it to my own gmail id. I mean to say that autofill of email addresses doesn't work. All my contacts is synched with gmail account and that show all the contacts which is available through my email account.
Is there a way to get around and get this autofill option enabled?
Thanks
Ravi
I cannot seem to get new contacts and calendar entries to sync to Google. It will only download new contacts and will not upload new entries.
I have tried the usual, checking and unchecking Auto-sync, contacts, calendar. Tried "Sync Now." Nothing. Email works both directions tho.
This is a huge pain, because I already lost new contacts I entered after a hard-reset.
My Rezound sinks the google calendar better than my computer does.

Sadly, I just added a new calendar entry and contact, manually hit "Sync Now" and there is no sign of them on my Google Account.
Can you try adding a new contact and see if it shows up on your G account?
I have verified both contacts and calendar entries I've created on my phone are displayed correctly when I access my Google Contacts and Calendar from a desktop.
Do you save new contacts to "Phone" or "Google" when you enter them on the phone? Do you have "All Calendars" selected, or just the Google calendar, in your Calendar app?
Added new contact to hotmail and it went to hotmail and gmail on computer and phone.

I have all calendars selected. How do I change to just the Google calendar?
Also, where is the option on where to save contacts? I didn't change anything from the way it came and would assume that it automatically saved to google.
Thanks to everyone helping me figure this out.
From the homescreen, go to Phone>people>"+" sign to add a new contact. Then the first box is "contact type" change that from default (Phone) to your google account.
I found this out the hard way when i lost all phone numbers after a hard reset. It's strange that they're not set to "google" by default.
Hope this helps.

under phone/people, you can also click on view and choose just google contacts. From there on, it will only add them to your gmail contacts.

This is what I needed! Verizon is trying to teach some hard lessons. Google should definitely be the default.
Same was true for the calender. It defaults to "PC Sync" for new entries, not gmail.
Thanks!

HA! I think Verizon is hoping Android newbs won't know that it syncs contacts nd saves them between phones/resets in the hope to push their sync option.
There is still the problem/issue of when you edit a google contact on your phone in the people app, it will NOT sync the change back to the google servers. For example, if a contact's phone number is (123)-456-7890, and I go to the people app and edit the contact and change the number to (111)-456-7890 and save it. It only stays changed on the phone for a few mins. When it re-syncs with google's gmail server it goes back to the way it was (123)-456-7890. Or if you edit a contact's email address or home address, or group name, etc. The changes on the phone only last 30 seconds to a few mins until it re-syncs with google's servers and then the changes get wiped out. Its like its only a one way sync. I've never had this issue on any other android phone or ROM.
I believe this is a bug in the People app on the Rezound. I've emailed HTC several times and they tell me I'm making a mistake. But [email protected] how hard is it to edit contact info?
Well I placed my order for my Lumia today! I am anxious to get it and take it for a spin. As a a previous HTC One X user I am curious if there are any tips for making the switch anyone could provide.

Yep, the only thing I would recommend, is to take a few minutes, or hours to arrange your contacts in your live account:
1. Delete contacts that you don't know
2.- Merge repeated contacts so ther is one contact with full information instead of multiple.
3.- Find on Internet how merge Facebook Calendar events on your live calendar (Very useful for events, and birthdays)
4.- If necessary, add manually, or via Office Outllok your current phone contacts to your live contacts. (Use outlook Connector to add your live account to Outlook, and edit your contacts from there, it much more easy and fast)
5.- If you do all the above steps you wont have to ever think about syncing or backing up contactas ever.
6.- If you add a Coporate Exchange account, contacts wont be merged or displayed on your contacts( that's cool, because most of the time, you dont even know that well of the people on your job) but if you have to write an email for example, you will be able to use your corporate adress book.
7.- If you want to add birthdays of people in your contacts list, don't make it through calendar, make it in the contact itself, so when you are reminded of an event or birthday you can write on facebook wall or text, or call directly from the calendar app.
Once you do that, it is really impressive how WP merge all your contacts from your different services ex: live, facebook, twitter, linkedin, etc, The very few contacts that aren't merged because for example you use nicknames or name abbreviations yo can merge with no hassle inside each contact.
If you do this, you are prepared for the best experience ever, because on the case of phone lost, or formatting or new phone you just input your live credentials and vualá you have your contacts, and calendar synced right away.
Besides that, you only have to find your favorites apps, taking in to you account that for example, facebook and twitter are already embedded in the operating system so they are not necessary.
Welcome to Windows Phone, it is an amazing experience
Excellent thanks!

These are good suggestions but probably not required.
When you add different accounts such as Hotmail, multiple Google accounts, Facebook etc, the contacts will all be merged if they share the same name. If not, you can still manually merge them on the phone. None of the information on the corresponding services is changed - only the way it is displayed on your phone. You can also un-merge certain contacts if you want to. You can also choose what contacts you want to see on the People hub - so for instance, you can turn off your Outlook (work) contacts.
The same is true for the calendars - you can choose which calendars to sync and which ones to show in the Calendar app.
I don't see a need to go through organizing everything online - can be a pain if you have hundreds of contacts.
In case of a lost phone, you still have all the data - just spread around on different services and it will be a breeze to set it up again.
Case in point: I have Hotmail, three Google accounts, Facebook and work email account set-up. Took me less than 5 mins to organize everything on the phone. I turned off Facebook and work email on my People hub - I don't want to see all those contacts.
Anybody else - if you have a different experience, please speak up. But I assure you syncing multiple contacts and calendars is a breeze.
