Finally the proud owner of a dell streak. I serviced one for a client a few months back (was hitting server redirect errors on browser), was amazed at how awesome it was, so I purchased one myself. I had a few questions for you guys though, some randomly general tips I would sure appriciate!
Running 2.2 with 340 stock on ATT:
-With a 2gb data cap, is there any suggestions to not breaking this limit?
-Ive seen some perfomance fixes with an increase in quadrant scores, running stock 2.2 with any of these help me? And how can I view my current quadrant scores?
-Any customization tips? I cant manage to get my album art to show up, even though its there when I sync from WMP to my device.
-Whats the best videocalling application available? I've tried tango but I frequently get bad connection errors.
Get quadrant from the market to see your scores ...to get better scores root your phone and run setcpu

Do you embed your album art in your music files? What format is your music in (MP3, FLAC, etc.)? I find embedding the art into each file works best when moving music between different devices. I use MP3s. For windows I like Album Art Downloader, MediaMonkey, and MP3 Tag for working with music files. I use MP3 Tagger Pro on my phone. Some music players will DL album art for you.

Hi,
I have an issue with the way 2.1 roms handle background processes. Using Cronos 1.4.1 at the moment but the issue is the same in every 2.1 rom I've tried. The issue is not there in 1.5 roms.
In the car I like to run Spotify and CoPilot at the same with Spotify in the background over A2DP. When I do this the music from Spotify starts breaking up and becomes unlistenable. I can fix this by turning off the screen but it starts again when the screen is turned back on. CoPilot isn't a huge amount of good without a screen so this is a pretty bad workaround. I wouldn't complain and just chalk it up to underpowered hardware but I never had this problem with the 1.5 roms.
I've tried overclocking but that doesnt help at all. At a guess I would say that the scheduler is effectively choking Spotify when it's got a another app in the foreground (it isn't just CoPilot that deprives Spotify but most programs that have constantly running processes i.e. games). Web browsing only breaks up the music during page loads.
Is there a way of telling the scheduler to give Spotify a greater or equal priority to foreground apps? Is this something that BFS will solve (or make worse). Is it possible the official kernel will make a difference?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Phil
PS: Apologies if this belongs in the general forum but I thought this is more of a development issue.
You can always try setting a `nice`/renice constant.
I have exactly the same issue with spotify, it seems to have very low priority, I don't know if this is a problem with the spotify app or the way in which android 2.1 deals with it but it does seem to be throttled to the point of stopping when you try and do anything else with your phone while running it.
It didn't appear to be an issue on any of the 1.5 roms and seems to be a lot worse on a Sense 2.1 rom (I don't know if that is because there are a lot more things running in the background)
I used a the "top" command within adb shell and could see that other process, some htc and some standard android were jumping up the cpu usage way higher than spotify and this seemed to cause the music to break up.
I really hope that if the official 2.1 version is released, whatever is causing the issue (sense, android or the spotify app) is fixed!
EDIT: for some reason, trying to load up web pages makes it stutter like crazy!
Hi,
adwinp: you clearly know more than I do. How would I go about setting that?
DarthOps: I'm glad that I'm not the only one that finds this frustrating. I'll check to see if the Music app behaves the same way or if it's just Spotify. If it's just Spotify then maybe it's worth raising a bug report with them. Have you tried it recently in a 1.5 rom? Wondering if the later versions of Spotify still behave fine in 1.5.
Cheers,
Phil
Hey.
I have the same issue with all 2.1 roms. I'm currently using cronos 1.4.1 and it's a bit better than with other roms.
I guess we'll have to wait for the official eclair release before raising a bug report
With 1.5 there's no problem.
I'm using app2sd, are you guys too ?
Yup, but I am pretty sure I've had the same issue using non app2sd roms. I'm trying that scheduler hack somebody put up on the forum, will post my results in a sec.
Update 1:
All the tests were done with Spotify over headphones and not A2DP. Going to test that on my way home in the car.
Spotify and Torque (OBD app that is constantly running and uses BT), saw a possible improvement in that it took a good half a minute before Spotify started breaking up but then it was as bad as before.
Spotify and CoPilot are playing nicely together in the office but the real issue is when the map updates (i.e. moving). Will test on my way home.
Spotify and web browsing: loaded bbc.co.uk and Spotify didn't stutter once.
Spotify and Frozen Bubble: No stutter at all during playing.
This could actually be a workable solution and is promising that maybe BFS based roms will work.
Could you give us some informations about how to do this hack ?

You have to edit your initrd (init.rc) and rebuild your boot.img
You have to find out the resource # of the process choking the system and reduce its nice, and upp the one being slow, for example.
The arguments of setrlimit: resource current max
Sorry, should have said. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=689829 has all the details.
Turn usb debugging on and open an adb shell to type in the commands from the post above or alternatively use the gscript method (didn't work for me on Cronos 1.4.1, the SU request FC on me).
adwinp: Wow, think that might well be beyond my capabilities. Is there any way to edit that in adb? Also it's not one program being "nasty" but rather Spotify being too "nice" .
Ok thanks a lot, I'm gonna give it a try
I find that I tend to get stutters when the phone changes between 2G and 3G connections too, I remember some Droid users reporting the same problem

Change your band to WCDMA only:
open dialer, and:

Be sure you have good 3G coverage in your region first!
Unfortunately the scheduler hack doesn't fix this for me. Tried it in the car going home and still got lots of stutter when running CoPilot. Possibly a bit better than before. Tried with and without A2DP and it made no difference. Back to the drawing board I guess.

So I installed this custom rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13086258#post13086258
I really like it and it suits my needs in terms of stability and battery lifetime. Nevertheless I got two small doubts that may or may not have to do with this rom in particular. Here they come:
1 - The ROM does not come with a youtube app, but i managed to instal it from elsewhere since it wasnt availabe on the market. Problem is that most videos don't play, especially VEVO ones... I always get an error saying: Error while loading the movie. This happens via 3G and Wifi connections.
2 - How can I keep the 3G data connection permanently on? When phone goes to standby it will shutdown the connection after a few minutes. In consequence I am not able to keep my IM+ alive and running. How can I resolve this?
Cheers
Answer to question 1-
I'm not too sure to be honest, I never really use YouTube as it canes my data, but it might have something to do with the frames-per-second rate, the hero's a bit poor in fps performance. Maybe someone who knows more can answer
Answer to question -2
Goto settings/accounts and sync/ and enable background data and auto sync, this should help, it did for me anyway.
But be warned, your battery and data might take a beating!
Hope this helps.
Vevo tend to default to HD videos, so that could be the issue.
I've noticed most of the videos that don't play on my Hero when tried on my Galaxy S all tend to be high res ones.
Or you could have a very useful "Justin Beiber" blocker running
Edit- Just tried it on the wifes Galaxy 5 and they show on that as well, I am clearly talking out of my arse lol

1 I think Vevo ones are not available on YouTube mobile due to the labels not allowing it. Think about it, who would buy music then if they could just stream it from YouTube?

Didn't you know, Poweramp sucks
Dramatic much? If this is the first day you're using it, it still needs to cache everything and all that good stuff. After that, may just be your SDcard is slow or try organizing your library better. I use a basic structure of:
Artist > Album > Song
Works fine and most media players pick that up easily
Works perfectly fine on my old Hero and on my new EVO 3D. Why don't you give some more details about your setup so you can help fix the problem rather than just complaining like a little spoiled brat.

We've a joker here (or a retard. the 2 aren't mutually exclusive). I'd bet he is using a low end android phone, LG Optimus one. Or he could be using a class 2 sd card. Or he is brain dead. Or all three. Either way, it is people like this that are ruining it for us.
Its like saying Crysis sucks when you're trying to run it on a Pentium 3 processor with Intel Graphics.
Poweramp failed to make me a hot breakfast AGAIN this morning. Terrible app.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vaelek.sdspeedboost&hl=en
Poweramp was late to work AGAIN!!! such a bad app.
This thread actually made me laugh
Using v2.0 and it doesn't deserved to be called a beta version, it's so stable and polished.
There might be something wrong with your phone... Too many apps may be ? or a low end phone?
Let's see you develop something better, eh? It works excellent for me (both beta and the latest stable version on market) and for the 5-10 million who have downloaded it. And the almost 90k people who decided to leave comment/rating gave it 5 stars and another almost 20k gave it 4 stars.
Surely the problem just must be with the app and not you or your setup, huh? /sarcasm
Please, be more considerate before you rage and rant about an app. And the beta is called a beta for a reason. And if it's also a problem with the latest stable version you're having, most likely it's not the app's fault.
That aside, it would help if you were more detailed about your setup. Not that 2 seconds of your life is that terrible a loss. Me thinks it's your SD card that's the issue here. My measly 8gb class 2 sandisk external microsd handles flac files just fine, album art and all. The "32gb class 4" no name external microsd I was given on the other hand kept failing in every single way.
No You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there,
Up until a few weeks ago, I was an iPhone user, but never really enjoyed it that much. I got myself a SGS2 with Telstra, so far network and phone have been alright. Downloads at around 8.6MB consistently.
My phone specs are as follows:
Model: GT-I8100T
Version: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9100TDVKF2
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100TDVKF4-CL301812 [email protected] #2
Build number: Gingerbread.DVKF4
1)
I am new to all this and would like to understand more about what all the above actually means. Does anyone have a tutorial or link explaining it all?
2)
I have heard about "rooting" your phone. Can someone either tell me or direct me to somewhere that can outline what rooting is, why someone would do it and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
3)
There are things about this phone I cannot stand:
The browser always crashes (so I have replaced with with Dolphin HD).
You cant turn of Camera snapshot sound.
When ever i unplug earphones and plug them back in the media volume automatically decreases.
The stock media player does a terrible job at being good, moved to winamp (are there any better ones, perhaps a rip of the iphone music player?).
Battery Life is terrible (if I use GPS guidance, phone would be lucky to last a day).
I find that the phone takes a long time to "load media from sd card" is that normal? (I have a class 4 mini sd 32gb).
Last of all, Facebook for android runs terribly on this phone. Can't upload photos, or even view my own. I can't work out why. Tried reinstalling.
I thank you in advance for any help or links you can provide me with.
Cheers.

I can't say I ever noticed the stock Samsung browser crashing on my device.
If you are rooted, you can permanently disable the camera noise by renaming the shutter sound ogg file in /system/media/audio/ui. Rename it to .ogg.bak and it should stop the noise.
I liked the stock media player but there are other popular music players like PowerAmp. Or even the music player from the MIUI ROM.
Welcome to smart phones. Battery life sucks. Get the official extended battery, root the phone, remove some bloat, install a custom kernel like SpeedMod. Also check Kies to see if your carrier has released an update for your phone. Android 2.3.3 is old and not very battery friendly.
I have a class 10 SD card and it doesn't take long to load at all.
Facebook for Android has always sucked but I have never had any problem with photos.

Thanks for the replies, been reading up a lot the last couple of hours.
Just a few questions for you:
1)
What exactly constitutes "bloat"? My phone comes with a few Telstra (my provider) apps like news bulletins, navigon (with free maps in AUS), but are there processors behind the scenes that I can't see that really slow it down that much?
2)
When you say "install a custom Kernal" I am not sure I understand entirely. I read the thread posted above, but is installing a different kernel the same as installing a new ROM? Do some ROMS include different Kernels? Do I need a new/different rom (from the stock) in order to install new kernels? Please explain in basic terms. I am guessing I need to root the phone in order to install kernels. By installing kernels, am I losing anything on my phone?
Thanks.

Consider rooting as jailbreak. Normally you don't have root access privileges on OS. But some programs or you yourself need to have root access to change something on OS.

Unlike iOS, android supports various hardwares, phones, tablets etc. iOS supports only the hardware used by apple. Therefore all unnecessary code has been pulled off from kernel and OS. That's why it feels faster and battery friendly.
In android there are some tricks to save your battery. Be patient and keep reading the forum, you'll learn in time

QUESTION
Hello. Before you read the title and assume I haven't done any research, please continue reading
What I'm looking for is a way to record my phone's Android OS screen. I'm looking to start doing tutorials and reviews on games so I need to be able to record actual gameplay. I've tried various ways to do this, but all unsuccessful unfortunately.
I initially purchased Screencast Video Recorder which does an amazing job at recording screen and movement, but whenever I launch an actual game is when I would experience problems. As far as me looking at my phone went, everything was fine. But when I would go back and look at the video file it recorded I noticed it would basically stop at the moment the game got graphic-intense I guess. Some games it would completely stop until I closed the game out, or it would literally play a frame every 30 seconds it seemed. I played around with the settings to increase/decrease FPS and quality but neither fixed the issue even remotely close. And I'm pretty sure it's not any problem with the power of my phone as it's a decent one (see end of thread for specs)
Considering this is basically the best application on the market to record video, I assumed that the best way to get around this issue would be find an application that displays my Android screen onto my PC and use a normal desktop application (like Camstudio) to record it on my desktop screen.
Next I gave [email protected] a try but ran into similar problems. The FPS/movement was so slow that it was worthless. Upon reading the FAQ on the [email protected], they said there was no way to increase FPS because it was dependent on the USB. I monitored the bandwidth and it stayed above 2MB so I don't see what the issue was.
Next I tried androidscreencast which pretty much did the same exact thing that [email protected] did - on top of that it was said I could control my phone via the java application but it didn't work for me.
What I ultimately am looking for? This video is a perfect example (my apologies for linking to this particular video, however it's the best example I could find). It's great quality/resolution, they are able to control it with their PC because I see a mouse moving, and they also launch Angry Birds at the end of the video and I don't see much of decrease in FPS. One thing I noticed about the video is at the very end they stop the video and I see they are using Screencast - so of course with me have already using that I was extremely confused as to how they got such great quality and can control it from their PC.
If anyone has any links, suggestions, recommendations, or anything that can help me do this, it would be greatly appreciated!
