CM7 Help! - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So this was my first time with CM7 and I followed all the steps but I'm having problems. When I get to installing the .tar file in as pda through odin, I made sure of unchecking auto reboot but after I hit start as it gets to the zImage it justs stops. The bar doesn't fill green in odin, nothing happens, I didn't unplug or touch a thing and my phone goes from the download mode image to a black screen. Now I've waited around 30mins now to find nothing has changed, this is the second time this event has happened since after using odin to go back to stock because I was forced to unplug my phone, bricking it in the process. Can anyone tell me what's wrong? I have clockwordmod, I installed the backup through it, I'm using odin3 v1.00, but I just don't see anything wrong done in the steps. Thank you.

try 1.3 odin

[Q] Cannot return Vibrant to stock

No matter what I do, this phone will not return to a stock unrooted state.
I have tried Odin. It freezes on DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!! or cache.rfs no matter what I do, no matter which computer I run it on, no matter which USB port I plug it into.
Heimdall also fails. It starts, claims that it is updating factory filesystem, then stops with no error message. Reattempting results in the error message "failed to retrieve config descriptor."
No matter what I do, I can't return this phone to stock! This will make it harder to sell if I ever do sell it, and plus, not being able to clean the slate means any 2.2 ROMs I flash have had serious lag problems, leaving me stranded on Eclair!
Help?
i had the same problem, i sent mine to t-mobile and they mailed me a replacement soon after.
I can't actually do that... this phone was purchased second-hand.
have you tried other versions of odin?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I've only tried Odin3v1.00 and Heimdall.
I can't find any downloads for other versions; all Google searches lead to v1.00.
look for the 1.3 in the bible section.

Try no version of odin. or close odin and reopen it, sometimes takes a few shots before it works

+1 for a newer version of Odin.
I thought I had perma-bricked my phone a month ago, but solved the flashing problem simply by using a newer version. Here is 1.7:

Did you flash the stock tar and pit files?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Yes i did from 2 different people on 2 different computers( Home and work)
I even watched some youtube videos on how to do it so i couldnt possibly mess up the written directions
Try to flash a 2.2 voodoo kernel with odin. If the flash is successful, use three button method to get into recovery.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
where would i get the 2.2 from and how do i use odin to do it.
I know it sounds like a stupid question but i really want to make sure i dont mess up.
Thank you very much for your help

Get into download mode and make sure odin sees your device. If it does, take one of the 2.2 odin kernel files found in that link above, and place it in the pda slot in odin. Flash and hope for the best.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
none of the links work it just keeps taking me to a blank page or the general xda forums
Sweet they work now for some reason or another..
and now instead of looping it just stays at the vibrant screen

what if I pull the battery directly after oden finishes and then do the 3 finger to boot into recovery, would that keep it from going back to stock recovery?

That'll work.
See, you aren't supposed to have the battery in when you use Odin anyways, that way, when it is done flashing, your phone just powers off making it easy to slap in the battery and do the three-finger into cwm at first boot.

make sure you unplug the phone before you put the battery in. if not, it'll just boot as normal.
There is no ED01 radio that we have available, so I'd be wary of whatever radio file you're flashing. Also, Odin 1.7 doesn't always work properly, try using version 1.3.

Side note on this, is there any practical barrier to bundling a kernel with a recovery Odin?
I noticed in the kernel packages that they generally modify /system when they install. So perhaps you would have to odin over data also to run in a script to complete the kernel install at boot. Meh, it would just be nice if installing recovery didn't require immediately wiping kernel and then odining recovery again.
I figured a compromise would be to CWM recovery with the kernel in the same step, then I noted I was just being lazy and it really isn't much trouble to go through once per factory restore.

I would download a CWM Odin file and one of the two odin files from here. Flash one of the two (doesn't matter which you do first) and once it completes, unplug the phone, and then plug it back in holding volume down to get back into recovery and flash the other file. You'll then have a stock kernel that won't re-flash recovery, so if you boot normally, it won't matter. You can also download Odin 1.3 from here

I was re-reading your op and Someone else just recently had a similar problem with a new battery...it may be a dumb question but have you plugged in your new battery and let it sit and charge for a few hours? Could just be a completely dead battery cause if your getting pass you shouldn't be boot looping or frozen at the Samsung screen.
Try charging for a while and try flashing again.

[Q] Need Help! sgs2 stuck

Hello i have an sgs2 from At&t and i was trying to root but was unsuccesful and now i have this message on my screen when i turn it on " Frimware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I could use any advice or help. I have search and tried alot of things but no luck. Please thanks.
What method did u use to root?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
And importantly did you attempt the recovery through kies?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
i used the "how to easily root your sgs2" method using odin. I tried to use the recovery through kies but it asks for a code and it wont connect to my phone.
It sounds like your phone is still half functioning. Try booting into recovery,
With the phone off hold down both volume keys and power button until you see the first screen, then let go of the power button.
If it's stock recovery you'll be able to do a factory restore(wipe). If CWM choose wipe data factory reset.
After rebooting it might work.
Worst case you can put it back in download mode and try odin again.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
If you can't get it into download mode you may have serious issues.
Might need to build a usb jig or buy one.
Contemplate a return.
If you tried everything, and I mean everything to get it into download mode, i.e. jig, "adb reboot", then neither can they. Can't see anything you did.

You never did tell us what KIES has to do with ROOTING ?
I would definitely flash back to stock. Stock will never further mess it up. Not to mention there is the stock rom that's prerooted. By using that one you won't get a yellow triangle on boot. Nor will the counter go up from changing the kernel.

If he downloaded an international rom then he can't use the stock recovery as the power button on the international roms aren't the select key. They have an actual hardware button to select. I found that out the hard way.

At least you got download mode working. With that working there should be no issue about fixing your phone.
Just keep in mind depending on if "everything flashed from the international version you possibly will also need to flash the right modem.
I wouldn't worry about that until you got the phone up and working.
It's best to keep each step as simple as possible, especially for the first time you're trying it.

ok so i downloaded the stock rooted rom and im using odin 1.85 but it stops at factoryfs.img, any ideas??? thanks again for all the help
Not good. I wish I could offer more help. At least it didn't stop at flashing the bootloaders.
There's not too much you can do at this point. You can try waiting seeing if it changes.
You can hope if you do unplug it that you can get it back into download mode. Then try odin again. Though I'd make sure the checksum of the download matches up to make sure it downloaded properly.
No one wants to be the one to say unplug it in the middle of an odin procedure, but if no progress is being made after a reasonable amount of time, there's not much left to do.
