I was wondering what your thoughts are on what the fastest ROM for the ViewSonic gTablet is.
Thanks!
Ron
Right now, I'd have to say Vegan-Gingerbread. At least, it's the fastest I've tried.
I loaded the Calkulin rom based on TnT 3991 last night and was surprised at how fast it was. It also does not require jumping through all the hoops like installing TnT 5 does.
Vegan Ginger Edition.
Another vote for Calkulin's ROM. Fastest I have tried plus retains a bit of the TnT interface. To me that makes it seems a bit less like a giant phone and more like a true tablet OS.
I will definitely stick with it until we get a working Honeycomb port.
I have to agree that caulkin 1.1 seems to be the fastest. the yahoo mail app refreshes instantly and there are no loading times. Flash work automatically upon install on all browsers I have tried, dolphin hd, mira, and stock. I could never do that after updating tnt lite. It does seem as if people will have different opinions. Some people have issues with one and not the other. Either way thanks to all the developers who take their personal time to bring us so many options. All the roms are great!
+1 to this thread. I'm getting my G-Tab in the mail in a few hours and I'm still contemplating which Roms to try. Is the Adam rom any good?
Another vote here for Caulklin. His ROM+Pershoot kernel=very fast and stable ROM.

I use VEGAn 5.1 Beta, and I've tried every ROM thats available for the VS GTAB and I have to say the FASTEST UI I've tried on the VS GTAB to date has to be Calkulin's TnT. It's Supersmooth and seemless response is very impressive to say the least.
I decided to stick with VEGA because I'm not really a fan of the TnT UI.
I would also have to say that Caulkin's ROM is also the fastest and smoothest that I have used so far.
CaulkinĀ“s is the fastest for me at the time, but it is a little buggy with some FC and stuff.
Caulkin's ROM is the best that i have tried so far. i came from TNT also
Caulkin's ROM for me. Stable. Can use standard CWM and not FC.
If Calks is based off 3991, then silly question but where do I get 3991? or is that update installed by flashing the rom?
I have the Calk rom installed currently and i'm just slightly confused when it says it is based off 3991.
I also have not partitioned my Gtab but the only issue i had were a few random freezes where my tab just white screened and I had to hold the power button to reset. Also it wouldn't wake from sleep. I'm assuming a diff kernel may fix that.
I'll be the odd one out and throw in CM7 RC4 from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002000

Calkulin. 1.1
Adam rom is the best looking one if you use the adam apps, but in fact the apps are not that functional.
In terms of speed (with regards to this thread), its average.
Haven't used anything else but the stock ROM but I'm very happy with how snappy Calkulin's is.
Calkulins for me, very stable.

Would someone please just gimme their opinions on both. I have VEGAn-Tab 7.0.0 and well i was just wondering if Cyanogen7 was any better i use Cyanogen on my phone and i was wondering if it was good for tablets also.
Really would appreciate it thank you.
This should be in the questions section but vegan ginger is cyanogenmod 7 just themed and with various tweaks.
Maybe you should try it out for yourself?
Also be aware that there is a specific section for Q & A.

I normally stay with stock however i tried vegan gingerbread the stable version. So far everything works flawlessly and they have even worked out the auto debugging issue. Nice job guys.
Gingervegan is build from the same source as cm7. Gojimi just tweaks it a little and adds his launcher and some theming

I have had both my G Tablets since the week before Thanksgiving 2010; the devs on XDA kept me from taking them back. My thanks, support and respect to all of these folks and many thanks to their families for allowing all of the hours I know they put in to give us options!
I have tried every available rom; all of them have their good and bad points. You have to decide what rom options you need and look for a rom or rom/kernel that will give you those options.
I installed cyanogenmod 7 on my tablet when it released; found the ADW launcher to be slow so I switched to the paid version of Launcher Pro I already owned and found it very stable and speedy!
After running this for a couple of weeks I felt comfortable to move my 2nd G Tablet to cyanogenmod 7 yesterday. Everything is running perfectly and I really have been happy with this move. I like the fact that they have nightly builds/fixes for this rom. I do not even have to go out and check for rom updates because rom manager detects the latest version for me.
I then download and apply the latest full update and continue on; this is by far been the best rom I have tried so far and will most likely keep this installed on both my tablets for the foreseeable future!
This is all based solely on my humble opinion... results may not be typical to your tablet as mileage will vary!
I was running CM7, but switched to veganGB, for a few reasons
1) CM7 seemed to phone centric
2) VTL launcher
3) some CM7 tablet tweaks conflicted with base CM7 settings
I also have a paid launcherpro lic, however i seem to be having fewer failed to load on widgets with VTL / ADW
I am in agreement with most of the other posts here. I have tried several of the other ROMs. VEGAN 5.1.1, Caulkin's, etc... and VeganGinger has been the best so far. I also decided to use LauncherPro+ as I already had this on my DroidX.
I am enjoying running cm7 nightly and I am running LauncherPro+ because I also use this on my evo. I have had no issues with LP+ and cm7 especially with the OC kernel.
im a fan of cm7.. ran vegan for a while, but prefer regular cm7. better smartbench scores too!
Hi all,
Just got my tablet from Amazons's big woot sale. Really appreciate all the work in the Roms & the documentation; from the post/guides to the youtube videos. I hope I can contribute soon.
I have read & read & searched but I haven't found a list showing the most current Rom. I see the list of roms to chose from but I'm not seeing a standard that everyone is accepting. Is it pick your own flavor as what suits you?
I also have seen posts taking about the G and Honeycomb (read the one & only post on forum). I swore I read somewhere someone made it honey for the G. Is that just elements on another ROM?
Is there a chart or something that compares what ROM has what feature?
If there isn't any of these things I'm guessing the best way would be to see what the most active posters have in their sigs/ profiles?
I'm new to the rooting thing & don't understand the psychology of the dev process here. I see the different camps but don't see how to tell the diffs without making a spreadsheet for myself.
thanks for your time & wisdom,
IdeaJason
maybe I should just ask what are you running?
Install a rom, if you like it use. If you don't install another
It takes about 2 minutes to wipe and flash a rom. This is not like windows in the 1990s where it took like a whole night to install an OS. Just try one and if you don't like it move on.
I'm using Calkulinized + Klemsynized + O.C.ed ROM right now. It's freakin' fast and pretty stable.
I was on CM7 nightly for a few days... switched to VEGANtab ginger because he's got screenshots working at least via screenshot ER or ddms, which I really want.
Love VTL launcher... love using pershoot's Overclock kernel... it's all good.
thanks all did everyone vote?
Thanks for the replies & votes. I'm going vegan ginger for now. I also wanted to make sure people got to vote.
I have nothing to save as I haven't even used the thing yet. Loaded ClockworkMod v08 and laughed afterwards. I spent 2 hours watching the video and reading 3 different guides on two different websites. Was so easy, hopefully this continues with vegan. After that when the root/ hack gods show me a good omen I'm going to root mine & my wifes EVOs & then replace the HD on my Asus G73 with a hybrid SSD. These things work on energy, If the energy is good once you can usually get great results as long as you don't get the smoke in you eyes... or lungs.
I'm running Calkulin + Clemsyn 1.2. I was running the 1.5 but found the battery drain to be too high. Quite happy with it!
Loaded Vegan Ginger last weekend. Love it. Not going back to Vegan 5.1.1 That was good, Ginger is better.
I ran tntlite for about 3 weeks and loved it then figured I'd give some gb roms a try liked Veganginger try g-harmony as of yesterday so far love it just can't get my honeybread on it

is 2.1 based roms or 2.2 or 2.3 the best? that would be the most reliable and fastest rom out there? about to flash root and flash a rom on a friends eris. i just got a droid 2 global from my buddy so i've been playing around with that and the eris on the side and trying to figure out what's best for my friend that would be fast and reliable. help please!
the xtr roms are very fast and very reliable
you could install a few roms and do backsup of them and show your friend how
to restore backs ups or show how to flash roms

the person is someone i work with and she is a girl. i'm looking to just flash it and forget about it honestly. she has like 10mb or less right now and isn't rooted and hates the phone cause it's slow. i know rooting the eris makes it like 5-10x faster since i played with my eris for months upon months but just trying to figure out what everyone else thinks is the fastest. at the end of the day if you move onto another phone that's the biggest fix but for now i'll just root her phone and hopefully she will be more satisfied.
yea id say one of the xtr roms would be good choice to flash and forget imo
I have xtrSENSE flashed on my girlfriend's Eris; she has seen every possible ROM on my Eris and still prefers the "simplicity and the Sense UI" of her ROM; as she calls it.
xtrSENSE is a stable, fast and reliable ROM; kind of like STOCK but with all the goodies... if you know what I mean.
I like to stick with any stock 2.2 ROM (iConap's CELB 4.4)
It has been stable for a long time and I get about a day and a half worth of battery (with 3G/GPS/Sync all on with moderate texting/few calls)
2.2 Froyo is better than 2.1 Eclair because..
-speed and performance optimizations
-USB thether and Wi-fi hotspot
Check the link for more info
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html
Don't get me wrong, I see a lot of love from xTrSense ROM and it is a fast/stable ROM all around
P.S.
Yes 2.3 Gingerbread is even better than 2.2 like better app and battery management & theme chooser BUT once CM7 Final is out and all ironed up I'll be moving onto that
Conap's CELB Froyo is amazingly stable and zippy as heck..
I have that running on my buddy's phone as well as my wife's.. absolutely a "flash and forget" ROM.
-Xith
FroShedYo's Final is my preferred daily rom, up-to-date, run as is with options for further customization/OC tuning, etc. and very good on battery. Nonsensikal's ROM coming in 2nd. on 2.2 OS for me - keep a Nand backup on the SD card while running FSY's ROM so it's a fairly bullet-proof setup - not the fastest, slickest or necessary best on battery run, but very close in all categories.
+1 as others said about various GB 2.3 ROMs floating here on XDA, several are close to perfection with more fine tuning & minor bugs resolved, would be great - none of them, I feel, are the "flash & forget, leave it" status yet for the non-geek users. The ASOP, plain/almost Vanila type GB ones like OMGB and Condemned V5 CM7 running fairly smooth overall. In general, 2.3 OS loaded on the Eris sometimes has issues with GPS, camera & MMS, etc. - known "bugs" noted by some users and being worked on & some felt it's hardware-built specific .... even for the Kaos/Tazz/Workshed ROMs.
Aside from rooting the phone, which I assumed most of us on here took as a given, is to flash the C2C as it will free up extra memory/storage space by moving it to the SD card - so proper preparation pre-flash (format/wipe, etc.) I use 3 different SD (16, 8 & a 4 GB) cards so that I can play with several ROMs while keeping my "working" primary ROM on the master and easily switch back & restore .... Running widgets & other settings also affect how smoothly a ROM run, as is battery calibration & conditioning, as I'm sure you know.
The Eris Froyo ROMs, as far as I know, all have issues with long-term GPS use, like navigation, where the GPS radio goes screwy after about 20 minutes or so. This was fixed in all of the GB ROMs, as far as I can tell (I have used Runkeeper to log a 3 hour run with GSB and it was perfect.)
That said, if you want fast, set and forget, no bugs, no "weirdness" (i.e., long-press menu to get the keyboard in order to press 1 or 2 when you dial *228 in the Froyo and GB ROMs; hold VolUp while you press Send to wake the screen when you are in a speakerphone or BT call and the display times out in the Froyo and GB ROMs) - IMHO you want xtrSENSE. I think that the GB and Froyo ROMs are worth a try, but I would also install, set up and Nandroid backup an xtrSENSE build just in case. The only thing that xtrSENSE is missing is the cool Google Voice Actions that comes with the Froyo and above Google search app.
I have never used xtrsense or rom, I did use kaos froyo and loved it. I am now on gingertazz and dont plan on changing to anything else. Its fast, stable, and has awesome battery life. Right now I am at 100% after 4 hrs granted I havent used it much but I am impressed. I say just keep trying different ones you will find the one that fits your phone best.
I've been using TaintedTenzo2.1 for a few weeks and I really like it. Its very stable, and fast I haven't had any issues with it. I've tried Gingerbread roms and they were great but just not for me.

If you are comparing to a D2, yes, it will always have lag. Try some other ROMs if you wish, but, in the end, you are running a phone with hardware that first came out two years ago - April 2009 for the Magic; June 2009 for the Hero. The only difference was Sense and more megapixels on the camera when the Hero was released; the Eris added the proximity sensor. Otherwise, it's the same phone.
i'm a big fan of xtr.sense myself, i love the sense ui and otherwise zippy overall. i've tried alot of roms and for a flash and forget i would highly recommend it
I agree... Flash and forget... xtrSense
Zachs work is stellar and super stable.
I tried GSB 2.8 on my wife's Eris but after adding Launcher Pro Plus so I could get the calendar widget and beautiful widgets to get the weather/clock back, it seemed quite a bit more sluggish than Zach's xtrSENSE 5.01. I'd like to see GSB as fast or faster, but it wasn't the case for me...
I also had some bugs in GSB but I'm sure there are fewer now. I'm going to try again after it moves to RLS2 and see...
Anyone experience different results in terms of performance?
Im running a 2.3 rom called GingerBreadShed 2.3.4 (CyanogenMod 7 Nightly) and love it so far, the customization is amazing. Theres so many options, i flashed it a couple hours ago and haven't even gotten my apps back yet because I'm so caught up in the features... but of course, i have a problem i should let you know of... Im trying to find a solution and if anyone knows let me know. I cannot use any widgets i download, only launcher pro widgets and a few default widgets. A lot of HTC widgets are even absent. I'm trying my best to figure out a way to use them and ill let you know it i do.

HTC widgets will only work with a ROM running the Sense launcher.
Agreed either zach's xtrSENSE5.0.1 or xtrROM5.0.1
Both excellent, fast, stable, and solid.

OK so I'm looking to install a rom on a new GTab. I'm reading that there are new Honeycomb clones coming soon but I would much rather install a ROM that has been proven. My daughter is heading off to college again and I don't want her to be stuck with issues she won't understand. That being said which of the 2.3 versions are best. Please be understanding of my concern and don't arbitrarily say "this ones the best because this gut makes it". I truly need a stable rom.
Thanks in advance.
I'm not a fan of CM7 because of the lack of hardware accelerated drivers, but it seems to have been fairly stable.
I'm debating other roms at the moment (possibly froyo for more hardware support), but I'm thinking I might end up coming back to CM7 because my kids and wife use it and its been pretty rock solid.
Otherwise, heard good things about Vegan Gingerbread Edition.
Are you talking about all roms (ie 1.1 & 1.2)?
Thanks guys,

This is interesting. I have tried CM7 versions on a couple phones in the past and was never really impressed. I find CM7 forum folks short at times with fellow XDAers whom might not understand things as well as they do. You also make me wonder and I will check when done here but CM7 isn't a Froyo nor GB based yet??? Hmmm

I would imagine 1.1 due to it's longevity.
CM7 is a Gingerbread based ROM. Its true, I had to leave XDA to get support for it. But I initially did it because it was compatible with netflix.
Hey tomween1, Well I've had my tab on several roms and most have been pretty good but it dpends on how much "tweaking" you do:
for me (& ppls exp would differ dpending on what tweaks they have done):
I've found Vegan GingerEdition as SOLID AS A ROCK! (followed MobileTechVideos directions /vid--I call this out as Josh starts on 1.1-2XXX then OTA upgrade to 1.1-3XXX) which gets you to great place to spilt to either 1.2 or stay on 1.1. I've found 1.1 ROMS most stable.
I've used CM7 Nightly (1.2 ROM)- super fast speeds, got NETFLIX & Hulu to run perfectly, but it was unstable. I would reboot and all widets would "Problem loading..), usb to PC didnt work so had to place in CWM and mount usb or adb...sounds like you kid isnt into the geeky stuff
So right now gtab is on CM7 7.0.3 Stable (build is from May 2011), usb to pc works, got netflix & hulu running perfectly (after setting the CPU 1.5Ghx min/max on Perfomnance in CyanogenMod settings), seems steady been about a week and running GOF2 (game) for hours and doig emails, twitter etc. no problems.
Anyway good luck.

I hear you, I like the eye-candy of the Honeycomb roms but I've always been a performance over eye-candy kinda guy.
That being said, I've tried all forms of roms on this tablet but the one I kept going back to (and currently using) is the Beasty/Clemsyn rom which ironically also uses VTL (Vegan Tab Launcher) as its default launcher.
Using SetCPU will allow you to OC to 1.6 as well as undervolt it. (gets kinda hot at 1.6 without undervolting)
Get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084573
There is actually an easy way to get the 5.1.1 ROM on BL 2.0. Just install the 1.1 ROM and flash a 1.2 Kernel over it before rebooting. I used Clems newest Froyo kernel.
The fastest I've come across the the C&C ROM. Fast, and stable, with almost everything working. I say "almost" because myself and a few others have problems with gifs on web pages from some unknown reason. My second choice, and the one I use, is Brilliant Corners.
Btw Clemesyn has released the Ultimate froyo ROM. A port from notion ink. I think you should try it. The rom is in development thread
Which one is better, the Clemsyn+Caulkin or Clemsyn+Beastly rom? Or are they the same just visually different?

On my Gtab, Clemsyn+Beasty is way faster. Stable as a heavy rock. I've run a lot of different roms, but have found none that can match C+B for my usage.
BTW, if you do decide to go with Beasty, make sure that you get his latest update. I believe it was released 10-14-2011. I had an earlier version, and had some Skype issues with it. The new version has corrected those.
I should mention that I have also run the C+C rom (yesterday in fact) just to compare. Nope, doesn't come close to the speed of C+B.
Good luck.
Just flashed C+B from recommendations on this thread. Loving it so far.

Main thing is C+C has the Tap-n-Tap elements and C+B is a NI/Adam port which is more Android like.
I cannot stand the Tnt menus, so my daily is C+B. And its FAST, stable, and everything works.
Thank you everyone for posting. I will try out the Clemsyn+Beastly rom. It sounds like a true beast. Ill post back with my experience on it.
Personally i would try the rom Brilliant Corners. It is hands down my favorite Froyo rom.
Why don't you give VEGanTab 7.1 a try, it is Gingerbread 2.3. Everything works on that ROM, camera, BT, h.264 video etc. OC to 1.6 using Clemsyn's Gingerbread kernel.

Looks like an interesting rom, and I'd try it IF they could get the video camera working. I use Skype for video chats, and since the camera in VT 7.1 only works in still mode, not video, that is a deal killer for me.
Nice eye candy though.
I am having problems with this rom. I am posting here because I didn't have sufficient credit to post in the actual thread. I flashed and it works great, but now whenever I try to install an apk, it reboots every single time and never installs. Any ideas on how to fix this? I went back to factory firmware and wiped everything completely clean before flashing to this rom.

After flashing I always boot back into recovery and wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe Dalvic as well. Wives your issues I would also suggest fixing permissions.
Try this and see if it helps.
Thanks Joeb. Everytime I went back to recovery it was the built in recovery from the rom and not the cwm one. I just chose wipe factory/user data and all works now. One thing I noticed coming from gtacomb was the gtacomb browser had more features and was 10x faster than the one that comes with this rom. Anyway to get the honeycomb version of browser on this tab?
On my gtablet C+C is faster than C+B.... As everyone was saying that C+B was the faster froyo rom I gave it another try on past weekend but I still feel that C+C is faster and more stable...
Maybe it's because I'm not using any app to manage the overclock features?
Does VeganTab 7.1 have hardware acceleration? We might be able to have skype videochats working if we flash Clemsyn fix for that...
I have tryed many of Roms and Flashed my Gtab more then I can think of and always end up reloading Beast. To me its seems to be the most stable and reliable Rom for Froyo. I like that I can customize it with different boot Images and wallpaper to make it almost portray Vegan 7.0. If one was to choose a everyday user I would believe that Beast would be hands down the one to choose. As far as the browser issue I don't use the one it came with and use Dolphin HD. Way better and a perfect match for this Rom.
