improve P500 I/O score - Optimus One, P500, V General

Guys, Joeseph Mother @ samdroid just show us his crazy I/O score (10 times faster than our speed now - 4xxx (without OC, i guess) compare to ~400 as our P500 OCed to 786MHz using Darktremor a2sd @ext4)

To extract/repack your ramdisk, you can follow the instructions here, to enable booting with /data on sd as ext2, just change the line in your init.rc with [email protected] to this: mount ext2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /data nosuid nodev noatime nodiratime"
I'm just new to Android so hoping that some of you guys can successfully done the same trick and show us all the step-by-step instruction later.

is this meant for all ROMS? or has specifics for CM only?

One word: Stagefright. You can turn it on on build.prop and have amazing Quadrant scores. Real life performance change? I doubt it.
Also, I don't think "booting with data on the sd card" is a good idea. Read and write speeds on SD cards are significantly lower than reading directly from internal memory.
Just a hunch, based on real life data

rom independence i think.
With stage fright enable our I/O still at max 400 compare to his 4K !!!! AFAIK H/W, JIT, Stage fright or any know tips did not improve I/O as this much!
Guys, pls don't mess with the final score, just focus on the I/O scores, his phone no OC.

It can be done with Firerat's a2sd script for CyanogenMod aswell, and it's a lot easier than changing your ramdisk. Here's My Quadrant score with ext2.

you mean this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655256 this script NOT universal, i guess. DO you have a proper one for P500 or a TUT for this will be AWESOME.
Thanks anyway for keeping up our hope hehehe
P/S: just found out this http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...2010-10-22-v135-resolves-mount-issues-i-hope/ but still don't know how to make it working...

As long as the rom you're using supports init.d scripts and has the sd-ext mount point just steal the mountsd and userinit scripts from any cm7 rom and then run fr's script and you should be golden. You might run in to issues with e2fsck (I did originally) but you should be able to grab that from a rom with the same CPU if you find one with e2fs tools. If I get some spare time I might look into making it a bit more portable, but some dependencies are gonna be hard to get round.
<edit>I was thinking of the second one you mentioned</edit>

This is the same as the data2sd mod, just worked into the kernel for ease of use. It's fast & stable, but over time may kill your sd card, but they're fairly cheap, so that doesn't bother me. What really surprises me is that when you convert the nand to ext2 & pull the battery, you reboot to a wall of force closes, I've pulled the battery 10 times with this and haven't had a single fc. This works very well with cm7, I did it with that rom and got 1950 at 806mhz.

I really don't know why you would want to do this... what if the SD card fails to transfer some important libraries while booting up?... ur p500 wl jus crash

HEy using this we can boot two roms !!! THink about it..bootloader is locked but cant we "chainload" some free bootloader and then use it two boot two ROMS one on phone and other on sd-ext partitions

Booting 2 different roms is what I need!

And about the two rom solution, JUST fantastic... so we can have two rom, one as a phone and one for tune up maximum!!!! Keep it up...

Just thought I'd show off, this still works well, it's a 1 line change in init.rc...this is on cm7 beta 3.1, overclocked to 806mhz..

Dude. First of all that score is insane ) Second of all, please, for us who are at the beginning of their android experience but still want to push their phone to the limit. Please, let us know EXACTLY what you do. For example I don't know where the init.rc file is (read the net that it's in /system/core but core folder does not exist for me or I simply can't see it) also how do you actually edit the file, with what software? How exactly can you tell if you have an ext2 partition on your sdcard, and if you don't, how do you create it? Please, write the exact steps, no links to other threads (cuz it's really annoying and gets harder to follow), just the steps to all that you said in your post. Thanks in advance!

Data to sd with dalvik-cache to ram for sga

There are a lot of ways of moving /data to SD ext(2nd) partition. Here I'll show you an easy way to do it which is fully compatible with Samsung Galaxy ACE(and possibly other devices as well). If you don't like the method used here, try other Data2SD/ext mod which may suit your needs.
Why move dalvik-cache to RAM? Basically, the idea of moving the whole /data partition to SD ext partition is to primarily get more space for installing apps. And in this case, it does perform very well and combined with fast SD cards, it could even provide real-life performance boost. Now the downside to this, is that while most /data contents just get copied and read not that much often, dalvik-cache stores some info that needs to be read and updated very frequently. This results in a high I/O read/write frequency and thus results in shortening of the SD card life(in theory, the same could also be said when left internally but this time dealing damage to the nand disk instead). To counter this, the method I used is to move dalvik-cache to a virtual-disk like partition known as a tmpfs. tmpfs resides in RAM and has dynamic resizing structure which can allocate space depending on your needs. This way, dalvik-cache won't be using any physical disk and therefore causing damage to none. Almost too good to be true right? Well the drawback is, because tmpfs resides in RAM anything written onto it get's lost when rebooted or in-case of power loss thus resulting in loooong boot times(depending on the apps installed), as dalvik-cache contents are being rebuilt on every boot. Well I think that's enough of dalvik-cache and lets start with the mod.
WARNING
USING A NON-APP2SD / NON A2SD / NON-LINK2SD ROM OR SIMPLY UNINSTALLING NON-APP2SD / NON A2SD / NON-LINK2SD IS STRICTLY RECOMMENDED
DO NOT EVEN TRY THIS MOD IF YOU HAVE ANY FORM OF NON-APP2SD / NON A2SD / NON-LINK2SD INSTALLED
ALWAYS PERFORM A BACKUP BEFORE TRYING OUT STUFF LIKE THESE
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for anything bad happening in the world blah blah, you know the drill!
Put the files of Data2SD_for_SGA.zip inside the corresponding places on your phone manually.
system/bin/e2fsck
system/xbin/busybox_d2sd
system/etc/install-recovery.sh
--------------------------------------
Basic Requirements
1. Fresh ROM
2. Rooted
3. No A2SD, No App2SD, No Link2SD
4. SD Card Partioned to Ext2 and Fat32
5. SD Card must be original (NOT Class A) as much as possible Class 4 and up.
6. Make sure that your SD Card is partitioned accordingly. Just like how you did when using link2sd.
7. Previous link2sd users need not partition your SD Card. Just format the EXT2 partition.
Steps
1. Flash DXKC1 ROM in your phone
2. Partition your SD Card with EXT2 (first) then the remaining FAT32
3. Root your phone with SuperOneClick then reboot
4. Before inserting the SD Card remove .android_secure, Android and LOST.DIR folders. And make sure that EXT2 is clean
5. Copy the extracted Data2SD_for_SGA.zip on your SD Card
6. Install Root Explorer on your phone
7. Copy the files from the extracted Data2SD_for_SGA.zip to your phone using root explorer
system/bin/e2fsck
system/xbin/busybox_d2sd
system/etc/install-recovery.sh
8. After successfully copying the files, reboot phone.
9. Turn on phone and wait. The initialization might take some time depending on the speed of read/write of your sdcard.
10. If errors has been encountered, REPEAT THE STEPS FROM STEP 1.

Hi, it tried 3 times and it's not working for sga.
Would that work also on GingerBread? AFAIK automount scripts make SGA reboot as per Link2SD issue.
@mastrone -> Link2SD and Data2SD is a different thing.. But both won't work on Gingerbread because install-recovery.sh is quoted inside init.rc

When you have an applications installed before putting data2sd in its place... Some or most of the application will result to FORCE CLOSE... That's the reason why it should be applied on a FRESH ROM.
I experienced it before when i got excited on applying Data2SD having 200 apps installed... The result, i got FORCE CLOSES on most of my applications.
But you can still try it out on a currently running ROM in your phone, make sure that you have no a2sd, app2sd or link2sd installed..

Basically to avoid/minimize errors with conflicting mods prior to this mod. If you're an advanced user(or something like that) you probably know what you're doing already so fresh ROM install is not necessary but still recommended.
@tazz811
Nice work man, I'm assuming that the current custom ROM available for SGA does not have init.d support as of now and that's why you placed the script inside the install-recovery.sh script. Well, this might sound useless but, why not make install-recovery.sh call any scripts from init.d? Maybe something like:
Code:
list=`ls /system/etc/init.d/*`
for k in $list
do
sh $k
done
this way, you can run the data2sd script from init.d which will then make it easier to make modifications as well as allow other scripts to run on init.d.
@Ungaze... Thanks for the idea... You owe all the credits... It's me LTGB
list=`ls /system/etc/init.d/*`
for k in $list
do
sh $k
done

my understanding of this simple script is, it will run any script found inside system/etc/init.d/ folder.

No.. It's not working on a rooted Gingerbread ROM (Stock or Villain ROM). The init.rc is kinda secured even if you unquote install-recovery.sh it will revert back to the original state. Therefore install-recovery.sh will not be executed during boot time.

Ok i got it to work. I have about a couple of apps installed about 10 and i was successful running the script. I uninstalled all my other apps. I didn't encounter force closes. So yes i can confirm that d2sd will work even on an existing sga rom. But you need to uninstall most apps including big ones as this might lead to a force close.

ext4 should work but you wont be able to backup your SD-EXT using clockworkmod recovery.
First backup your apps using titatinum backup, boot into recovery mode=>mounts and storage=>format sd-ext.This will format your partition to ext2.
then restart and restore your apps.

If you made your partition using CWM then it is ext2 and not ext4 .
Please check your partition type by connecting your device to your PC and opening a partition manager which recognizes ext partitions.you will see that your SD Card is split into 2 partitions

You can safely use my ROM because your are using EXT2 and not EXT4.

High quadrant score in the screen-shots is based on high CPU and high IO score so I would guess these tweaks would be highly dependent on sd card speed to get higher scores unless there is some swapping to ram going on to "fake" these IO speeds. I've read something about that while checking out data2sd > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852219
@googlehome: What brand and type of sd card are you using ? I'm very curious because I'm looking for the best one possible for our device.

Thank you every much googlehome. Thank you. Thank you.

sorry for my weak english...
By the way, Wi-Fi is not working on my device with this ROM, just like it's not working with Amalgation's EUViewPad. It is, however, working with CleanViewPad ROM. I have HWVer 103.
Some of my impressions.
Wifi works on my Viewpad 7 HWV 1.03. Tle launcher is notably slower than the stock one. There is no email application and I don't know how to send and receive emails. It is not good as emails are very basic tablet function for me.
I am really courious how to "revive" icons from Dock "thrown" in the recycle bin?
Everything else is OK. One of my Quadrant scores was 1045.

Install and Configure a2sdgui on ROM's CyanogenMod

Install and Configure a2sdgui ROM's CyanogenMod
Hello fellow good here I leave this tutorial hos to use a2sdgui based on CyanogenMod ROMs, as these ROMs do not include this system and its installation is different from a stock rom; a2sdgui is an app that allows us to extend the internal memory the mobile to have more space to install apps, this is accomplished by configuring two aspects: SD memory partition and installing a script called darktremor a2sdgui, well initiate:
THE WHOLE PROCESS IS DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BRICKS IN MOBILE IF YOU DO EVERYTHING AS SHOWN TO WORK ALL YOU ASSURE THAT CORRECTLY
RECOMMENDED TO DO BEFORE INSTALLING THE MOBILE APPS
Requirements:
- ROM based CyanogenMod 7.1 or 7.2
- Install a2sdgui (DOWNLOAD FROM THE MARKET)
- Script darktremor a2sdgui 2.7.5.3 Beta 04 (Download)
- SD card partitioned
Instructions:
1. - Install a2sdgui
2. - MicroSD Memory Partitioning:
First download the MiniTool Partition Wizard.
http://download.cnet.com/Partition-W...=dl&tag=button
Once installed, we put our SD on the PC (with a reader, adapter or anything like that) and open the program.
If you already have some partitions it is recommended that if we start from 0 erase all as shown.

After deleting all now begin creating them.
We give and we get this Edit menu and the first is FAT32.
We have to make FAT32 and Primary, we assign space is relative, I having 8GB (class 6) I put all but 1.5 will be for ext4 and swap.
Now for the ext4 partition, select PRIMARY. Now the partition type is relative, it is recommended that if your card is less than 6 class partition is ext2. If Class 6 or more ext4. That and I leave to your judgment, in my case I assign 1 GB will be to host the apps as if they were in the internal memory.
Now we use the remaining space for the swap partition (PRIMARY), in my case 500 Mb RAM With this more of our ACE will have 800 MB of Ram (the swap partition is a partition that is used like RAM, it is so important!)
APPLY Now we give and we get this message should accept and the thing to end as you see in the two screenshots below.
Partitions that I recommend are:
3. - Restart the phone in recovery mode
4. - Scroll to and select mounts & storage mount / data and mount / system
5. - Made the above should be unmount / data and unmount / system
6. - Now return to the main menu of recovery
7. - Enter to install zip from sdcard> choose zip from sdcard>-2.7.5.3-beta04 dtapps2sd-signed.zip
8. - Restart the phone, when you start DO NOT OPEN OR ANYTHING IN THE MOBILE, the mobile just restart again, it is NORMAL not alarmed.
9. After reboot, enter A2SDGUI. On the menu that appears in the display of APPS on SD are expected to be active and SWAP may also, in case this is not no more to give up and active. At the end of the menu is the VALUE SET 0-100, I got 100 and I gave the side.
10. - Now we turn to LowMen directly and I have chosen this, to me is the one that best suits me. The option below elijais leave more free memory, it is better but in my case having 800 mb is fine for me up there.
11. - Now let's Dalvik-Cache and choose it and click Move & Rebuild and phone will reboot.
AND THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO END MUCH MEMORY FREE AND ESPECIALLY A lot of RAM! ENJOY!

@tazlooney89, thanks for sharing this tutorial.
Could you please explain the difference between link2sd, s2e and app2sdgui??
there are so many methods, gets pretty confusing which to use.

I haven't used s2e, so i can't give you a description of, but i can say that the main difference between links2sd and app2sdgui is that meanwhile the first only moves the apps to the sd (even those that aren't allowed to by the os), app2sdgui "cheat" Android to "think" that it have more internal memory, but really it's just part of your sdcard.
Hope you'd understood me

I think you guys didn't understood me; I'm on the stocklite v3, and it's a custom rom with DT scripts installed. Anyway I'll take a look over that threads ;-)
EDIT:
Haha, i've messed it up!
I don't know why or how, but now i have the app2sdgui running, but....also i had runngin link2sd, and several apps linked. Now i have a lot of "andro-boxes" (linked apps that are, seems, not readable) in my phone, a sdcard partitioned and a lot of information blocked.
I'm trying to create the mount scripts on link2sd to unmake the links, and start using app2sdgui, but link2sd can't because "device or resource busy"
Good, i'm the best! XD

Modifications that WORK on the P769

Ever since I bought my L9 a month ago I've been tweaking it. I've done simple things like root and overclocking/undervolting, but I've also done more complicated things like deodexing the whole ROM and swapping the internal and external SD cards.
WARNING: USE INFORMATION AND FILES AT YOUR OWN RISK. DON'T COME HERE IF YOUR PHONE IS BRICKED.YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
However, I will help if you're having errors or freezes because of the scripts, if you say what you've already tried.
What I've Done:
Root
Deleted T-Mobile Bloatware
Overclock and undervolt at boot
Changed LCD Density
Deodexed ROM
Installed Jellybean's (4.2) keyboard
Themed the SystemUI.apk
Swap internal and external SD cards at boot
Bind Google Music library to SD card at boot
How I Did It:
Rooting:
I used Lelus method, you can find several threads detailing that.
Deleted T-Mobile Bloatware
At first I just used the built-in disable_tmous_packages.sh located in /system/etc/, but then decided to delete them.
Overclock and Undervolt
I use Tasker, but you could use numerous apps to run the script at boot (w/ root/su). My script is based off of what's detailed in this thread.
You can either download the script, or copy this:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
insmod /system/lib/modules/symsearch.ko
insmod /system/lib/modules/cpu_control.ko
echo 0 300 840 > /proc/cpu_control/tweak_cpu
echo 1 600 850 > /proc/cpu_control/tweak_cpu
echo 2 800 870 > /proc/cpu_control/tweak_cpu
echo 3 1200 890 > /proc/cpu_control/tweak_cpu
#echo 3 1300 890 > /proc/cpu_control/tweak_cpu
echo hotplug > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
(The 1300 was for testing, it doesn't add any performance and going above it just cuts your MFlops by more than half.)
Change LCD Density:
This one is easy, I just lowered the density to 212 from the default so the text would be smaller and I could fit more on the screen.
Deodex ROM:
I followed the instructions on this thread to deodex, it was simple and took about 10 minutes.
Install Jellybean's (4.2) Keyboard:
I extracted the files from CM10.1 and put them on my phone, works like a charm. Downloads: Keyboard APK (Put this in /system/app/). Library 1, Library 2 (Put these in /system/lib/).
Theming SystemUI.apk
After deodexing I changed the status bar (status_bar_background2.png) and a few other images to my liking. (I used an app the first time around and it did that transparent part between each notification.)
Swapped Mounting Points Internal and External SD Cards:
I used method #3 from this thread, but it didn't work so I tweaked it into this script. I just run it at boot (w/ root/su) with Tasker.
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
su
busybox mount -o remount,rw /
busybox mount -t vfat -o umask=0000 /dev/block/vold/179:61 /mnt/sdcard
#busybox mount -t exfat -o umask=0000 /dev/block/vold/179:61 /mnt/sdcard
if busybox mount | busybox grep vold/179:61; then
busybox mount -o bind /data/media /mnt/sdcard/external_sd
chmod 0777 /sdcard/external_sd
fi
Used bind to get Google Play Music Library on SD Card:
Google Play Music stores the offline and cached mp3s in /data/data/com.google.android.music/ (Which is the same partition as the internal SD card BTW.) I made a little script that runs at boot (w/ root/su) with Tasker. With this you have to make a directory named MusicCache on your SD card.
Code:
mount -o bind /mnt/sdcard/MusicCache/ /data/data/com.google.android.music/
Q and A:
Q:"Is this (the overclock/undervolt script) optimized for performance or battery life?"
A: Not to brag, but mine does both.
Q:"What happens to existing apps installed in the internal SD card?"
A: I recommend coping everything to the external SD before swapping, then nothing happens.
Q:"After we swap, is the internal SD card rendered useless?"
A: Nope, the internal SD is accessible from the /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/. (I might mess with the script later to mount to /sdcard/internal_sd)
Q:I want to mess with the overclock/undervolt script, how is it formatted?
A: echo line# cpufreq voltage > /proc/cpu_control/tweak_cpu
Q:Can I use the bind with another application?
A: Sure! Just switch around the directories.

Awesome work! I'm probably going to experiment with this stuff when I have time to spare.
I am a noob at this kinda stuff though, so I have some questions
1) Overclock/ Undervolt:
Is this optimized for performance or battery life? I've been looking at this thread to see different voltage/clocking sets that are stable. I'm not sure which ones lean towards performance or which ones lead toward battery life.
2) Swapping Internal/External SD Cards:
What happens to existing apps installed in the internal SD card?
After we swap, is the internal SD card rendered useless?

1) Mine does both it's formatted like this:
echo line# cpufreq voltage > /proc/cpu_control/tweak_cpu
The stock voltage for 300MHz is 1025 while my overclocked 1200MHz is 890.
2) I recommend coping everything to the external SD before swapping. After the swap the internal SD is accessible from the /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/ . I haven't had any hiccups.

I think I took that before I got my class 10 SD card.. The phone has no reason to be faster as nothing important should be stored on it. The onboard memory just seems to be fast.

No internal is ****. On my p760
Write speed 18-20mb great, read speed 5mb bad.
I asked rhat because you swaped sd this. And bench marks use the internal sd. In your case your 32gb sd card
And is did good.
Im still on ics to lazy to update. Dont want to lose data.

[Benchmark] Performance: F2FS vs EXT4 | How to Convert ext4 to f2fs and Install ROMs

Hi all,
I am proud to present benchmark competition between ext4 (The White G2) and f2fs (The black G2) file systems on LGG2 with D80230d ESA.
f2fs (The black G2)
I was formatting 3 partitions as below to f2fs.
/cache
/data
/system
I was using 4 benchmark apps ( CF-Bench,RL Bench,Androbench,AnTuTu) to test performance.
CF-Bench
CF-Bench is an overall benchmark by Chainfire which measure everything except graphics.
RL Bench
RL Bench is an SQLite benchmark, it only tests database read/writes with various SQL commands in various amounts.
Androbench
Androbench is supposedly an all-around I/O benchmark.
AnTuTu
No need for an introduction, it's probably the most popular benchmark these days.

so f2fs relies on kernerl or rom? cant rember LOL.
and somboons was it me or on first test, it says 4 cores then mhz/ white says 1995 then on black says 2545.?
isnt the black one overclocked?
so i heard from dorimanx that it was still on test phase f2fs, would you recommend to change format? ive used f2fs before on s2 but i really didnt see a difference.

/data , /cache were f2f2 ? please install icex rom on ext4 + install dorimanx kernel before then backup with twrp after that change /system to f2fs the rename your backup
ex. system.ext4.win to system.f2fs.win (change ext4 to f2fs) all system files after that restore it again.

You can edit updater-script replace ext4 to f2fs then format /data , /cache , /system to f2fs after that flash ROM> dorimanx kernel
