I had the issues with my phone (bought outright from Bell, unlocked for use with Rogers)
To connect to Wifi, try the following, and report back:
1) Disconnect the WiFi entirely (as in un-check the on button)
2) Turn WiFi back on
3) When your WiFi hotspot becomes available, instead of just tapping to connect, TAP AND HOLD the name of your hotspot, and a prompt will appear asking you to connect or forget the network.
4) Click "Forget network"
5) Toggle WiFi on and off one more time
6) Once your hotspot is found, TAP AND HOLD until a prompt comes up asking you to connect.
Press connect, and voila, your wifi should be working like a charm.
My situation:
1) Bell Atrix (Build OLYLA_U4_0.37.4, Android 2.2.1 obvs)
2) Linksys WRT150N Router 2.4GHz using WPA2 Personal passcode
3) Unlocked + working on Rogers with cell unlock code.
interesting, i think i tried that with my att atrix (both stock and the leaked firmware) already, and it didnt produce any useful results. ill retry it later today, and post the new results.
I wonder why it worked for me. It can't be an issue with sims blocking access personally I think it is the router frequency causing issues.

I don't have any wifi issues with my unlocked Bell Atrix on Rogers. I'm using a different router though, and I also did a factory reset before power cycling and unlocking my Atrix. The Atrix also provisioned the APN settings when I unlocked the phone with my Rogers SIM in it.
It doesn't get any easier than that.
heh lucky you. well judging from the dmesg i did with wifi working and wifi not working, basically the only difference is
Code:
Link Down
Invalid ioctl data=-22
wl_iw_set_wap Invalid ioctl data=-22
Set ISCAN for wl_iw_iscan failed with -22
so im pretty sure there has to come some command from the sim/carrier that issues the -22 "command" , which than fails everything
oh and hoesntrix, i just remembered one more thing, namely:
after inserting the sim, the WiFi manager where i would have to do your steps, doesnt find any networks, or in fact it finds networks for like 1 second and than they disappear. and it cant be a router frequency issue if it works without sim after a factory restore...
im thinking some file gets changed in the /data directory/partition that gets restored with a factory wipe. since if you change things in the /system directory/partition they stay changed even after the factory restore.
my wifi was working until i restored parameters with Titanium backup from my Defy....
perhaps nothing to do with the other problem but who knows....
That would make sense. I really wish moto would not lock down the boot loader im just glad my wifi is working

hello
after the OTA update i having serieus problems with "wifi error"
im using cellcom sim card yesterday i cant activated my photon but
can use the wifi.
after i activated the phone the wifi shut down and says error.
i think it must be this stupid app Sprint zone.
i dont use Sprint services at all i dont need them,by theory if i delete this app
will i be able to Call?
this what i was wrote to motorola photon forum admin
got it activated eventualy but dont remmeber how,,
in a matter of fact i have found the problem :
before the activation i was able to connect wifi without any error after doing some changing in network settings
from GSM to ANY CDMA and switching back to GSM and the wifi work'd like a charm.
now after the activation the WIFI getting error.after start up wifi and 4G network activated but few seconds later
after my device is registering the gsm networks the 4g and the wifi cannot enable again
which means that the update is connected to the 4g network and the wifi when it
wont recognise the Sprint network it shuts the 4g network and the wifi as one.
the update caused all thouse problems i hope the info i gave you today will get
to the right place.

Not sure why the Sprint Zone app would cause it to not make calls. Many here have uninstalled it and everything is fine. If you root the phone anything can be uninstalled just make a backup first.
I'm not on Sprint and my Photon got the OTA but I do not have this problem...
Are you sure the OTA caused it?
definitely
before the update everything was as it should be.
I do not have this problem. And my Photon is not activated.
Try this:
Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks
1. Set Network Mode to Automatic
2. In Roaming Guards un-check the following under GSM Roaming:
- Call Guard
- Data Guard
- Outgoing SMS
3. Set Select network to Automatic
4. Check Allow GSM Data
I'm not sure that it would make a difference but those are my settings and my Wi-Fi works fine...

no...doesn't work...
I just used root explorer system/app and removed the apk. Otherwise titanium backup will remove it either way you will have to be rooted for these options to work for you.
Did you remove anything else prior to you getting this issue? How did you root your phone? I rooted via the Droid 3 method. If you rooted via the torpedo method, that could be what's causing the issue...

Hello all I am paying for a wireless tethering plan yet the mobile hotspot seems to time out every 12 seconds. It will lode a web site usually half way before my data just drops to 0 kb/s and I have about 4 bars of lte. I don't know if there is a way to fix this, I have tried turning it on and off and rebooting but nothing seems to help this issue. When it stops responding to my computer the device name changes to a * and then it will not send data anymore. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
I'm running into the same problem as well. I can tether through USB just fine but whenever I use the mobile hotspot my internet starts to timeout. I'll be lucky if I can go 5 minutes without it timing out.
Are either of you using Tasker? I had a very similar problem where I was using Tasker to determine when I was home by toggling Wifi to check for my home network and then setting sound profiles. I found that tasker would toggle the wifi which caused my wifi tether to stop working. It would look like it was on, but wouldn't send data. I fixed it by having tasker stop toggling wifi when running my wifi tether app..
Any smart action profiles set? Turn it off & see if it continues.

Mmh, I've got the EU RAZR (don't have to pay to route my connection where I want) and the Wireless Tethering is working flawlessly (HSPA+).
Maybe they haven't used the same software OR they've used the same software but there's a problem when LTE is ON.
Anyway, the EU RAZR is about to get an OTA...and VZW one should as well.

You may be on to something here. I'm going to try to wifi tether on 3G to see what happens.
I'm finding tethering is better with 3g than 4g for some reason.

Setting the data connection to 3G didn't help. It took a little bit longer to time out this time but it still happened.
So I kind of figured out why I'm getting timed out, but I'm no closer to a solution.
When I tether through USB, 4G will stay connected. Nothing wrong with it.
When I tether through WiFI, I time out because the 4G connection drops after a few seconds and when 4G is re-established. The 4G connection does not have data, even though it says 4G. I cannot access data on my phone or on any tethered device.
When I turn off the mobile hotspot, then my 4G will drop again and when 4G is re-established, then data starts to work again.
edit:
Maybe I have a faulty phone. I'm going to try to exchange it this weekend.

I have similar problem connecting a Kindle Fire to a Verizon provisioned hotspot. Web browsing doesnt work but music, videos, apps, and books seem to work. I haven't had a chance to check but on the Thunderbolt we had a similar issue and it turned it to be bad dns server for the wifi connected devices.
I don't have the ability to set a custom DNS server on the Fire so I can't check this at the moment. I'll report back when I can verify if this is the issue with a laptop.
I have a EU razr and I also have problems with Wifi tether - my computer can connect fine but I get "limited connectivity" and no Internet access. Worked without issue on SE Arc with same provider and APN settings.
What other Hotspot apps are out there that hopefully work better?
Same issue.
From what I have been reading on other forums this is a known issue that Motorola is working on and the ETA for the fix is no more than two weeks. We'll see.
This seems to work
I tried the steps below and haven't had a drop in the last 15 minutes. I'm not a network guy so I don't know the reasoning behind why this worked for me, but so far so good. If you're not comfortable messing with the Registry, then don't try this. I used a spare PC to test it first.
Change the Default Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) Size Settings
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NdisWan\Parameters
3. Add a Protocols subkey (if it does not already exist). To do so:
a. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
b. Type Protocols, and then press ENTER.
4. Add a 0 (zero) subkey to the Protocols subkey. To do so:
a. Click the Protocols subkey that you created step 3.
b. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
c. Type 0 (zero), and then press ENTER.
5. Click the 0 subkey that you created in step 4.
6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
7. In the Value data box, type ProtocolType, and then click OK.
8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
9. In the Value data box, type 800, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
10. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
11. Type PPPProtocolType, and then press ENTER.
12. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
13. In the Value data box, type 21, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
14. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
15. Type ProtocolMTU, and then press ENTER.
16. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
17. Under Base, click Decimal, type the MTU size that you want in the Value data box, and then click OK. ( I used 1400)
18. Quit Registry Editor.
19. Restart your computer.
On the Razr: Open Mobile Hotspot Settings-> Configure Mobile Hotspot. At the bottom, change the Client (DHCP) start address to 172.168.20.10

Any updates to this? Having the same problem and can't seem to make it work. Don't have a rooted RAZR so can't try the download link.
Hey! I used to have problems for a while with my tethering as well and ANY device I connected just wouldn't have access to the internet. I tried a lot of different apps, methods etc., to get it working and nothing seemed to work. But one day, I tried my own thing. I simply connected my device via wifi tethering (I don't use USB, but this should still work), and then, after it was connected, I simply opened my phones web browser to make sure I could access a data connection in the first place. And lo and behold, my tethering is working just fine!
So to put simply, what you should try is:
1) Connect your device via tethering (I used wifi, but usb should work too!).
2) Make sure you actually have a data connection! And then, open the web browser on your phone, and go to a web page (I just go to google )
3) Enjoy your tethering.
I hope this works for everyone, and not just me! XD
The last update from verizon fixed this issue.

After applying the fix for Hotspot settings to save in another thread (chown and chmod the /data/misc/wifi) I tried to turn on the hotspot, after all, this was inevitably what I got the phone for, H+ Hotspot.
Now I turn it on and the network appears in my computer, but if I try and connect to it, after I type in the security key, it comes up with "Connecting" and just stays like that permanently...
Eventually it sometimes says "Limited Access".
My phone does have internet connection, but why does it not work.
Does your network allow tethering?
Did it work on another rom?
Have you tried a hard reset?
I'm using tethering on VR but with speedmod kernel with no issues.

Orange in the UK for example use and APN on their SGS2 roms that doesn't allow tethering (you can set up a tethering connection no problem, but the network won't let you have any data).
They also lock the APN down so it isn't editable (insert rude word about Orange)!
You can get round the problem by adding another generic APN for all connections and using that.
i was having the same problem and struggled alll these days for solution. I used to get limited acesses and hence checked the ip4 & ip6 drivers connectivity for solution with no luck.
Then clicked on windows update, after update everything started working. So try to update your windows.
presently i am on turkbey ROM and it is working and also checked with sensation 1.9 and here tooo works!!!!!
Hey all, thanks for all your replies.

For anyone else wondering how I fixed my problem:
1) Rebooted the phone
2) Rebooted my PC
3) Turned off the WiFi Adapter in my PC
4) Turned it Back On
5) Turned off WiFi on phone
6) Turned Hotspot on without any authentication
7) Worked on PC
8) Changed back to WPA2 PSK
9) Worked with Key.

I had wifi tethering working fine on Orange with SGS running Froyo 2.2.1, but have just upgraded my handset to SGS2 running Gingerbread 2.3.5 (stock XWKI8 firmware), and wifi tethering isn't working now.
As far as I can see I have exactly the same APN settings in my new SGS2 as in the old SGS, but maybe I need to use this new trick.
What do you mean by "adding another generic APN for all connections and using that"? If I add a new APN, what settings do I put in?
Thanks.
I have a rooted / unlocked i717 that I recently flashed to the T-Mobile rom and ICS Blaze modem outlined in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30335211
Everything went fine and overall I've been happy except for my phone works a little slower and my battery discharges slightly faster. I noticed today however that I cannot use my phone as a hotspot with the Wi-Fi hotspot tool enabled nor FoxFi. I can see the access point, it will ask for a key, but never connect. When I was using stock AT&T GB before (on T-Mobile as well), I was always successful with FoxFi. It worked well.
Is this an issue with using a T-Mobile rom on my i717? Should I change my rom to the AT&T official ICS and then flash the blaze modem or is it time to visit a custom rom? I use my phone heavily for work, so I don't want to experiment with anything JB at this time. I need something rock steady. I wanted to add that I needed to move from the stock GB because I was getting a annoying reboot issue monthly that made me reset/reload the phone each time. Thanks!

Nope, no luck there. I did notice that under FoxFI, the SSID no longer appeared to my laptop after entering that code. I have noticed that the T-Mobile Tethering and Portable Hotspot tool that is part of the rom does allow my laptop to connect to it but I don't get an IP address. I've been searching around and I have yet to find anyone with a similar issue. I'd hate to go back to GB at this point, but I may have to this weekend if there is no answer as I have a business trip next week
Thanks for your help though!
I did some more reading with some similar issues with the GSII and read about a app called "Wireless Tether for Root Users".

It works great so far. I am relieved.
[my apologies in advance if there's a thread on something like this already - the XDA forum search function was not working this morning]
I've got a sort of bizarre problem that I cannot sort out.
We have an open wi-fi network at work which I've been connecting to with my Inc4g [not rooted, still running stock everything] since last summer. At some point in December, though, I stopped being able to connect to it. Here's where it gets weird:
A) My other co-workers with various other kinds of phones have not noticed any change or disruption with the work wi-fi,
B) I brought my old 2010 Incredible to work the other day and it had no trouble immediately connecting to the wi-fi network, and
C) My Inc4g still connects to our wi-fi network at home with no issues
So it is very specifically an issue with my Inc4g connecting to my work's open wi-fi.
When I toggle my wi-fi on, this is exactly what happens:
1) it sees the saved network
2) it then just constantly goes back and forth between "saved" and "connecting"
3) it also occasionally flips wi-fi off entirely and briefly displays the "to see available networks, switch on wi-fi" message... but then it flips wi-fi back on and goes back to #2
It shows signal strength for the network as poor if I look at the modify network menu, but that seems unlikely given A and B above. I have also tried telling it to forget the network and rescan, but that does not change anything. I have NOT asked firm IT about whether they changed anything with our routers, but it seems like that should not be the issue.
Any thoughts or suggestions???
Thanks for reading the tl;dr if you made it this far.

Whoops -- forgot to add that info -- not rooted.
Started the unlock process with htcdev back in July literally hours after they shut that down (when folks did not even realize they had shut it down) and then never got around to tinkering after that. Most recent software update was Oct. 2012.
Might as well also add --
Not only does my phone connect successfully to WiFi at home, but it also connects to my open work network when upstairs in our cafeteria (obviously via different router).
It just doesn't work in my specific place in the building. It presumably has to do with the router near my workstation. From the exact same location, various other Android phones and iPhones all connect without issue. It's driving me nuts.

That is truly bizzare.
When you try and "forget" the network, does it disappear from the list? But the problem returns when you try to reconnect, or does it never leave the list?

Yeah, it's gone from the list of networks when I tell it to forget. If at home, it stays gone. And if at work, it only reappears when it rescans for available networks.
I'm sort of tempted to just factory reset at this point, but don't feel like losing all my settings/apps/etc.
