[Q] One click root in the making (ducks down) - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Someone on here is going to kill me for posting this because I'm sure this has been covered somewhere in the Thunderbolt area....
I can't seem to find it though...
So the question... is there an app in the making for a one click root access to custom recovery?
TIA

GET HIM BOYS! But seriously, it's been reported that a one-click root method is in the works. Expect it within the next week or so.

Thanks man , metro Detroit in the house. Go wings.
I'm glad this is in the works because I really don't feel like ****ing around with adb on my phone. I'm running KaosFroyo v39 on my Eris and what a pain in the d*ck that was.

I feel you man, took me about 2 hours to get it rooted. Then another 2 hours to fix root on my custom rom, lol.

See there you go. I'll just go the easy route and grab the app. That's an app worth paying for/donating for.
Thunderbolt should be here Wednesday, I think I can live with it unmodded for a week or two ha.

Completely agree. The amount of work (not to mention fast!) that has gone into this device so far is definitely worth donating for. As soon as a quick root solution is readily available, I'd be glad to donate money towards it. Makes life quicker, though the adb solution couldn't have taken more than 30 minutes to follow carefully. Really not too bad if you copy/paste the commands and read it through first.

What big developers are working on the Thunderbolt? Does Kaos have his hands on one yet? I haven't been following xda as much since he stopped development for the Eris

unrevoked tweeted that they are doing something with the thunderbolt but haven't heard anything else since release... honestly doing the adb makes you more aware of what is going on with your phone so if anything goes wrong you can fix it yourself... took me 2 hours also to root and it went smooth til I started messing with a rom that I was unable to wipe/ nandroid... but now thats fixed with the newest cwm... I'd give it a few weeks anyway to allow a stable recovery to be made and for kernels to start rolling out that optimize the device... I only rooted to get back a few of my games with data (level 63 gun bros mainly, and yes all my 3* levels on angry birds)

Tazz is supposed to be doing some development - and - he's still going to work on the Eris He's got some great GB ROMs for the Eris right now.

Oh don't get me wrong, I know how to use adb I am just lazy, in the time I have been responding back and forth on this thread I could have had it done. I had 3 Eris's (trackball fail) and I even had the joy of having to unroot one, which was fun

Nice , so the current roms that exist for thunderbolt are basically just de-bloated almost identical to stock RUU I take it

I havent had time to try any of the ROMs but pretty much all you gain with them is losing stuff like blockbuster, city ID, tunewiki and all the other bull**** that comes on them. Any one played rockband on here yet? IDK if its not optimized for this phone or what but it sucks balls, and huge balls. it isnt laggy, it just doesnt seem to be able to keep up with the touches when you are playing on hard and the notes are coming by fast.

how are you dealing with flash withdrawals?

I know most of you in this forum are former evo4g'ers; how are you dealing with a stock phone for the last week?
Any regrets about moving to the 3d?
I've gone to the store a few times to see if I could get excited about it, but, It keeps coming back to a rooted phone, or a stock phone..
The talented devs here will most certainly figure this out eventually, but, it appears that this phone is taking much longer than most others to get root..
Do you wish you would have waited until there is root, or, is this new guy enough fun as stock?
thanks for your feedback!
What's Flashing? Honestly this bad boy is enough fun for me as is right now. May only root to remove bloatware honestly.
I miss bloat-free operation, better battery life, and wireless tether. Other than that, the phone is quite incredible. In my mind, other than the 3D which is way cool, the 3vo is just a "little" better than its older brother. Once the 3vo gets root though, it'll wipe the floor with the 4G. I see the Sense overhead as a major drawback, so 3vo-with-sense barely beats Evo-with-AOSP. When the 3vo gets root and I can put a good AOSP ROM on it: KNOCK OUT!
Mike
I don't. I still have my Evo 4G and a Nexus One lol. Rockin the CM 7.1 RC :-D.
if i could at least get temp root, i could deal with that for a while
i can wait on flashing custom roms, but i miss the programs that at least needed root
But im not tripping, i'll give the devs about 3 more weeks to work it out before I return my phone, then back to my rooted CM7 evo 4G
I just want to be able to take all the bloatware off as well. Plus custom themes and boot animations are also nice
I'm actually happy being able to run my phone and not have to worry about what bugs the current Rom I'm using may cause.
I was quite the flash-aholic with the EVO, and the 3 devices before that. This one works really well without flashing. I could actually use this one stock.
Of course, it will take me about 5 seconds to flash something as soon as it becomes available and rooting is definately on the agenda for tethering, etc.
No regrets on my evo3d purchase, but I am reading every post on the root thread. I gave my evo running deck's ROM to my daughter and I expect shell put up a fight if I wanted it back.
Drugs. I'm not looking forward to those withdrawals though once I'm able to flash again...

I don't have any flash withdrawls. Flashing repeatedly gives you bad blocks. no thanks.

You don't need root to remove bloatware apps.

I think I can speak for most people here when I describe the feeling... I dunno, its like every little once in awhile I try to forget how much more awesome root access would be... But in the end the urge always returns. I guess its like being a vampire who is trying a synthetic blood... I find myself returning to the dev sections in the supersonic forums just to see what they've been cooking up.
The withdrawal will be short lived though (thank GOD) when they finally unlock the bootloader. I know for a fact the majority of people who made the switch will get root. Its a necessary evil LOL. Until then I'll accept my false sense of root security and enjoy a solid build for once
I miss cm7, wireless tether, better battery life, being able to hear my phone ring when It's in my pocket, and easier to press volume buttons.
I sold my rooted EVO tho... Might take this phone back and rock my sisters old hero until this phone gets rooted and at least the external speaker volume gets better or a better phone comes out.

That, and, 3D sense would be pointless because it wood look terrible (all pixely and stuff) and it would have to be in landscape view.
Well I was saying that more because his comment insinuated that none of the roms are any good... Meaning the ones that all the guys in the dev section have developed? Or what? Pretty dumb comment when A. He hasnt even used any of them and B. Its a slap in the face to the hours these guys spend building them. I have used/tested just about all of them, and my phone was a million times better than it was out of the box with every one of them. People need to think before they post.

I'm on my second 3d for this exact same reason. Often the phone would start moving\deleting apps off my home screen lol. It would also send a lot of gibberish text messages as I'd watch swiftkey just run away with words that I wasn't typing lol.

Im just tired of people making such a big deal about cm7. All cm7 is plain android. Yes it was nice and fast on the old evo. But now it time for something different. We have the tech to make sense 3d it would be so nice. cobraboy85 if you like something other than sense on the evo 3d good for you. maybe u should of got the nexus s 4g then.
I totally lucked out tonight. I HTC unlocked my 1st (you can see where this is going) w/synergy nightly decided to die. Charge port went out. So my week old brand new EVO has been replaced by a hboot 1.3 "recertified" phone. All I know is, the 3d has not been as cool as u thought. Need an opinion. Have a trade for sg2 lined up. Thoughts.

My problem with Samsung phone they don't know how to keep up to day . The epic 4g still has 2.2 thats sad . That phone came out after the EVO and the EVO has 2.3.3 . With having a HTC phones they will b always updated (except the hero)

I am perplexed by this post.......
I either just got trolled (my guess),
or this is a kid. (my second guess).
A couple things, anyway, just for the S&G's.... :
First, THIS:
"All CM7 is (sic) plain Android."
Um, yeah, and that's all you should want it to be:
**Straight up-blazing-fast-small-rommed-custom-kerneled-Android, BUT, with a ****load of "extra customization options" that are very carefully painted on top.
(That sounds pretty much like a perfect situation to me.)
Then, THIS:
"We have the tech to make sense 3d, it would be so nice."
Oh, really... DO WE have the tech?
One question...
(and this is only if you assume that bloated memory-hog called Sense could actually be "ported into 3D")
Where in the world would you put it?
With the standard, (not-even-a-full-version) of a Stock HTC Evo3d Sense 3.0 Rom weighing in at like 700 Megs, how big do you think a fully 3-d, re-drawn, optimized version would come in at?
3 gigs? 4 gigs? 10?
You're on the wrong phone (or the wrong planet) if you wanna start discussing the development or even the possibility of a 3+Gigabyte Rom.
Sheesh.

New to the phone

My wife and I had Motorola XT720s and her USB borked out the other day. Our carrier replaced hers with a Vibrant and sent her on her way. Needless to say, she liked the XT720 and wants me to take the Vibrant. Since we have been on the most unholy of manufacturers (locked bootloader and no updates-yep was sold and bought on 2.1 [eclair kernal] over a year ago) I have been maintaining both our phones. We have successfully upgraded our phones to 2.2, miui, CM6/7 all with the locked bootloader and a little erseverance and a lot of adb learning.
My question is what can I do with the Vibrant and what are the better ROMs that you have? I am not affraid to get into the guts of the phone and work from that way. She just got it yesterday and when I got home, she pitched the switch to me, so this weekend, I'll root it, back up and then checkout the forums to see what is what.
Good ROMs/ Kernals (stability v experimental)?
Overclocking?
How to unlock the bootloader? I kow how on Nexus S but that is not this obviously.
Known issues with the phone in general, either software or hardware (i.e power button breaks after 2 mos. Stuff like that)
I already looked at the sticky nOOb guide for rooting. Is that update.zip the best way. Or should I use z4 or Superoneclick? I used Universal Androot before but that doesn't support Froyo kernals.
Basically, what do you like and and your opinions. The decision will be mine but I like to be informed. And I actually do like to read the threads, but we just got this yesterday and wanted to put out the feelers.
Thanks to all for your help and I look forward to the responses.
first, if your hardware locked, youre gonna havr to find the thread on how to unlock... do this FIRST.
We have several roms, they range from stable to fast and unstable
Imo, that would be froyo like bionix to cm7 respectively.. cm7 flys but its batt sucks and gps is practicallu nonexistant (not that good iin froyo tho)
There is oc up to like 1.7ghz tho my phone doesnt do more than 1.6 stable...
Also, never use kies under any circumstance and learn to use odin Well.
Thats my advice... welcome

That's great. Just the sort of thing I am looking for.
Couple of questions.
As far as OC. Is that an app or is it through a differnt kernal. I know that some kernals oc and undervolt or stock cpu and undervolt. There is an app in the market that was for Motorola that was called Milestone Overclock (I know real original right) and with that and SetCPU was able to oc my 550mhz to 1100. Is there a Vibrant app similar?
How do I tell if my hardware is locked? Once I know, then I will search the threads for that. I already saw some in here with regards to how to do it. I already got into stock recovery last night just to check and see if I could (have't put CWR in or rooted yet-will do that later on tonight). Does this mean it isn't HWL or am I completely missing the target?
Odin I assume is what RSDlite is to Motorola. You power up to bootloader, connect to PC and flash "stock" sbf files (which is basically what came in the box). I always like to have that on hand just in case. I'll google and check it out.
Thanks for the info and glad to be here.
Read the noob stockier guide. Has all the info you need. Also in the development section down load the aio vibrant toolbox. Has Odin, all the files you need. I recommend the rom bi winning V3. It has a kernel that can overclock. You need an app for that tho. I like set CPU because it has profile management for off screen, charging etc.. good luck.
To tell if your hardware locked turn your phone off and hold down both volume rockers and press the power button when you see the vibrant logo pop up, keep holding untilled it goes away then pops up again. Then let go of the power. It should boot into recovery mode. It will be black screen with blue letters that say reboot phone, reinstall packages, wipe data. It may take a few times to get the hang of it. If your unable to then your phones is hardware locked.
Okay, youce been in recov so youre not hw locked.... greggory, you only have to hold power button till you see anything oon the screen the first time... holding it after that just makes it hw reboot whivh works, but is a waste of time.
Okay OP, odin has some nice ffeatures that let you flash bootloaders and firmware both.. truthfully, you can flash ANY rewritable media in your phone except internal and external sd from.odin afaik.
Oc requires an oc kernel and an oc app... app for ocing include voltage control, which was made for samsung galaxy s, set cpu, which i dislike, cpu master, no-frills ... all of em work most of the time and i use Voltage control..
Am i forgetting tto address anything?

Ok so I've been using for a few days & I have to say the I really like this phone. Rooted and installed CWR lickity-split. Want to mess around and get more comfortable with surroundings, but have a few questions.
I dl'd Tegrak OC and am using it just fine. Any suggestions on stock kernal settings. Not applying any ROMs/Kernals for now, but setting suggestions would be helpful.
Got USB connection loop. Think I have a fix for that. Need to test some more.
Do I really have to name it update.zip to make "it" work, or can I name it anything else. Tried a few other names and they don't seem to install. Update.zip v buttermilkbiscuit.zip. why?
Does zipthemer work on this phone and do I have to name it Update.zip to make it work?
To change fonts, where do I put ttf? In settings there is a font changer, but where is the folder for that. Know it isn't /system/fonts BC that is a global changer but can't find it anywhere else. Looked in /data, /android and /sdcard. Clues?

Zipthemer is sweet. It takes all unzipped Metamorph.xmls, packages into one .zip and also creates and undo.zip too. Great themer.

The Vibrant fora wouldn't be the same experience without your participation, brother. Your ICS Guide thread (and our extensive GB BL discussion ... lol) originally inspired me to take the ICS leap (as well build the nerve to finally register and participate in threads here - ie. I was a long time "lurker"). Haven't looked back since.
Thanks for your efforts to ensuring all our Vibrant experiences stay ... well ... "Vibrant"!
That is funny. I just went back a re-read that thread. There is some good Q and A in there about all types of scenarios. Alot of familiar names too that have moved up in the ranks of experience as well.

Haha ... I just did the same. That thread could have been called, "Everything you wanted to know about ICS ... but weren't afraid to ask." Hilarious.
I'm not sure what wasn't discussed. We hit all the corners including some homescreen screenshots as icing on the cake. Great (re)read!
I completely forgot that some of the Zen crew had joined in ... Mostdef, bobshute, xriderx66. Lol.

This was fun to read, seeing Wood just entering the Vibrant community. The new guy on the block. Now look at you, you're one of the most recognized Vibrant users.
I remember my first post on XDA. I was messing around with Rom Manager and accidentally installed CWR. You wouldn't believe how much I was panicking, I thought I had bricked my phone! Lol, shows how much I knew.
Actually, that's why my name is "N00B_IN_N33D", because I was a noob who was in need of help. After I figured out how to Odin back to stock, which removed the (what I thought was) evil CWR I thought I wouldn't mess with my phone anymore. However s15274n talked me into flashing a custom froyo rom, Trigger, if I remember correctly. From there I blossomed in my understanding of Android and my Vibrant...
Anyhow, back on topic. It's amazing how experienced people have become here.

The Woodman deserves his due "respect" (but you have to say it the way AliG would to get the full effect). True Zen-like patience and an extremely rare dedication to help people. He's good peoples. No doubt!
Speaking of the way-back machine ... I can't even remember what Froyo was like. Do you? Then there's Eclair (yikes!). :what: I do remember the jump from Froyo to GB was pretty substantial. CM7 with those novel toggle bars and major speed boosts. Then ICS just took the phone to another level.
I remember the first time I rooted my phone, I was soooo damn nervous that I'd end up with a brick. I was just using SuperOneClick ... lol. The first time using Odin after reading all the horror stories here. The first time waiting through the VLF EXT4 conversion (seemed to take forever).
Been a fun ride.

The first time I flashed a Froyo Voodoo kernel, I was in my basement watching a west coast baseball game and it was late. The wife and kids were asleep and like you said, it took forever. Forgot to turn the volume off when I did it. So I am sitting there watching the game and I see the Bali palm tree. I think cool, whatever. I return to the game and out of nowhere, I hear this lady's voice. Thought it must have been the parabolic on TV picking up some lady in the stands. Then I hear it again. Kind of freaked me out until I realized it was LINDA. I'll tell ya, if you are ready for her, she'll freak you the f**k out.
Anyways, thanks for the kind words. I remember one of the many freak out, panic sessions I've had in the past and there was always someone who helped me out. Just feel it is my duty to give back. Now if I can solve this Encryption Error bug, I'll have come full circle. It is driving me nuts.
I remember one of my first threads back in 2009
It was a fake Hero ROM for G1
I bashed on two devs and everyone was pissed at me....then when I moved to the Vibrant I got a clean start

atleast your LINDA issue was panicked and gone.
I was in the bathroom taking a dump while the conversion went on... it freaked me out, and my mom thought i was watching porn in there -.-'
She then told this story at our family reunion... Almost died of embarrassment

That can probably be done with this phone since it uses the same chipset as the E3D and Sensation. Once I get mine next tuesday/wednesday ill see what I can do about getting this module to work.
If anyone takes a look at it, post anything you have tried. This could in theory at the very least allow an undervolt which would help offset the LTE power sucking.
Yeah see I wwas talking about this earlier. I think this will work. I PMed viperboy who actually wrote one of the bloatware scripts when we had temproot. Just waiting for a response AMD hope to get a jump start on this. Good idea starting this thread tho

Coming from the bravoc which has almost zero development aside from 2fast at his site I am used to just thinking of things to try. I was able to port a couple dinc roms to it even though I was told it couldn't be done. I hope to be much more involved with development here since there are already more posts in this section than there were in a year at the site dedicated to the bravoc

It took a few days to get that inc port almost bugfree (usb pc transfer wouldn't work) but it was otherwise fine iirc. I hope that with support and other work to use as examples i can make some stuff for this device that isn't either a variation of AOSP or a sense port that has some serious drawbacks.
I am personally more interested in the possibility of underclocking and undervolting than OCing. Or maybe OCing and undervolting like I did with my droid x - can really help save some battery and allow the phone to sip less juice. This phone is so new I am getting ahead of myself, but hopefully in time we can get root/roms/OCing and undervolting apps to work on the Rezound.
I normally run my battery on performance mode on all my phones. I set it to normal, and with the equivalent usage I get 1/3 better battery life. I even leave all my antenna's on(except WiFi when I am away).
Just to let everyone know what I tried. I took the file for "unsupported phones" from the link's thread and changed the version number to match the rezound, which is -- 2.6.35.13-g20c5d1d -- . As you can see it was not just the ending part starting with the 'g' that needed to be changed as ours is 2.6.35.13 and the file was made for 2.6.35.10. But since a reboot resets everything I tried it by changing only the part starting with 'g' and it failed saying "Exec format error". So I then changed the entire version string to match ours and adb actually completed the task but the phone rebooted immediately and everything was wiped out again.
I did this before the kernel source was put up on the forums but since I dont have ANY knowledge of messing with kernels I am no help there, but hopefully this can help someone get this mod going for the Rezound.
we don't have perma root like the 3vo did so I don't think this will work until then. But this was a band aid until the kernel source was released so this won't even be necessary anymore.

The guy who made Setcpu made a script that allowed oc on the stock kernel on the 3D. It was before perm root. It was right after agrabren found the first exploit and a reboot would return the phone to stock. You temp rooted ran the script from adb and used Setcpu to oc.. Some of the smoothest kernel action the 3D had.. I'm sure same thing is potentially there, just need someone smart enough to do..

Yeah I rememba that man. I was just talking about that the other day. I also mentioned that maybe we can use that somehow but I wouldn't know where TP start. But we need a stable Temp Root first I think. Not degrading anyone's work either.

Cool. I did find a tidbit that might (don't get your hopes up and basically pretend I didn't even say this) make root last longer. Obviously until I have my rezound for the next few days I can't even think about testing anything.
Then put it out there for us to test! Don't be selfish! lol

I will once I get around to writing it. I am in class right now then I am driving 5 hours home. So maybe tomorrow afternoon Ill get a script working. Also, I may have figured out a way to disable elements of sense in an automated script(for those that don't like sense).

Since I happened to venture to theses parts since our buddy plat ventured to this. I am a bit surprised to see you switched. How ever the module you are talking about in the op I am pretty sure you can't just hex edit the kernel version. As the kernel will be different for the device compared to that of the evo 3d. If it is anything like doing the g2 version for the htc merge that is. Where it had to be recompiled to work correctly.
I am sure one of the dev's familiar in here with building source code could get it done up. If it works after that I am unsure. Though con you ported the sense hd rom from the inc to the desire. That was the only one that you had ported. Followed by you followed samuel2706's guide and other info he gave you. Then you came to me to ask how I fixed the mms and verizon branding in the rom. In which I told you how to fix it but you put it off as you fixed it. As you are putting off in here.

[Q] New to Photon

I was due for an upgrade a few months back and never owned a smart phone but was able to get this phone free 2 weeks ago so obviously took it. Was hoping to get a few of you photon lovers to guide me in the best direction to get the best perfomance out of it. I have gotten the phone rooted and that is as far as I went. Due to so many mixed messages as to what are the best setups I was just wondering if a few of you that have had long time success with a particular setup could give me some steps. Thank you very much for any help.

I guess my personal input is
1 -- if you are in an area where you can get 4G speed, then stop and just enjoy it
2 -- use it awhile and if it does what you want to do, then stop and just enjoy it.
3 -- remember that ICS is coming soon. if you are willing to use an alpha ROM without 4G, and there is also something you Must have, then consider a custom ROM. And then enjoy it!

1-- 4G isn't a big deal to me since it is in limited areas around here and my 3G isn't horrible.
2-- I am enjoying messing with it, just figured if I can give it a performance boost I would.
3-- As far as ICS goes, I have it on my asus tablet and love it but been getting mixed messages on when that will be available for us if at all. If we do get it, I'm assuming any changes I make can be reversed ( correct me if I'm wrong ). Also thanks for your reply.
i love the photon but it will never be 4gbunlocked so that sucks. i run gummy rom installed with kitchen sink. i have zero problems with anything. ive ran every rom on here. kitchen sink gummy is best. be careful about installing bravia through kitchen sink i could never get it to boot so i left it out. beats audio is cool though, as is the bigger ics keyboard.

I would really appreciate if you could give me a run down on how to get this on my stock photon, also did you happen to oc you cpu? I have read alot of the threads on different roms but it becomes a little confusing for first time, also knowing how to revert back would be good too. Thanks alot.

If 4g is of no concern to you then i would definitely suggest that you unlock. The little tweaks and such you can make to stock rom just doesnt even compare to what throwing a custom on it would do for ya. The reason i would suggest doing that as soon as you can is because the latest updates will permanently lock your bootloader, this also includes the ics update that is soon to come. It cant be reversed at this time unfortunately. Do yourself a favor and dont get locked down to a rom that you will never be able to get rid of.

Cybiks pure CM7 if you want everything to work flawlessly. Cm9 if you can stand a couple bugs and want bleeding edge ics. If you choose cm9 be sure to read the cm9 fixes thread for proper installation procedure.

4G is Much faster, but I travel a lot and rarely am able to keep a 4G connection for more than 30 seconds or a minute or so. And more like 1G in my house, but I use 6M WiFi so OK. So, 4G for me is worthless.
Addiction? LOL!
Peace !
I have tried CM9 and Gummy from Kitchen Sink and for both roms can not get past the boot screen.
Ignore this. Didnt mean to double post, i is drunk.
Yep, success with both. Tell me your entire installation procedure for each and ill try to point you in the right direction. Its probably just a simple mistake. Also, the versions from kitchen sink are not the latest versions. Installing a rom the good old fashioned way is less convenient but less prone to error.

Which version of cm9 are most people using? I grabbed the latest from Jokers site and seems good except I have no phone service lol.
Two different versions of cm9 and neither have a mobile network. I am using jokers recovery v3 to flash. not sure what I am doing wrong and damn the rom runs soo smooth, any help is appreciated. I am putting the roms on my sd card booting into recovery, doing a data wipe and cache then installing the zip from my sd. It boots into the rom fine although it does say something about an error once booted but the only problem I see is no mobile network.
Go to cm9 fixes thread, grab cm9 version 3.1. Wipe system/dalv/data/cache, install 3.1, boot, reboot to recovery, wipe cache and dalvik, install latest cm9, install gapps, reboot.
