Is there a way to prevent wifi from restarting on its own - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know of a way to prevent the wifi from restarting itself. I am having the data connection issue and turn wifi off but it is back on again a little while later.

Are you using any battery/app management apps? Greenpower?

No battery management app and even after a factory reset I did yesterday for a different issue, it is still happening.

Bump... Any ideas>

can you describe the problem a bit more please ?

I have the same problem with mine. Wifi keeps restarting or sometimes hangs at authenticating. Very frustrating and makes wifi connection completely unreliable. I dont have any battery management app or no task manager either except for default one that came with Atrix. I use inbuilt battery app in "nighttime saver" mode thou.
-sekhar

I will turn wifi off through settings and later, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours, I will notice that it has restarted. This is without reboot. At first I deleted all the previous connections, but it still did this. I have even done a hard reset, flashed back to stock and I continue to have this issue. When it is on I have the data connection issue seen on multiple forums where I have to reboot my phone to get a data connection back (not calls, no sms, no email). This happens even though I have never reset up any wifi locations.
Any other specific questions?
BTW, I have the battery saver that came on the phone in performance mode.

try this to see if it helps. go to settings>wireless and networks>wifi settings> press settings button> advanced> turn wifi sleep policy to never.
maybe that will stop it from turning off.

I actually want it to STAY off when I turn it off. I would love to have it on sometimes but since that crashes my data connection, I want to keep it off for now til the fix for that is out.
Also, it seemed worse before I installed GingerBlur, but it still happens, just less often.

Did you flash the new radio after going to 2.3.4?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159505
May or may not help!

I flashed att pudding full 183 then cherryblur 0.5d...I don't think that either of those flashed new radio...
I believe I have N_01.77.15P now...going to update to latest version.
I believe this only affects the cellular radio, but I after doing some research it seems if you are going to be on 2.3.4 you should upgrade to this one..

[Q] Sudden battery drain...?

So, i've had the eris since Dec '09...been rooted for a long time...played with many ROMs...lots of root-req apps, etc etc. i'm pretty proactive and i pay attention...but this one has me stumped:
about 5-6 days ago my battery started draining fast as hell...looking at what was using the battery it said Android OS, Display, then Android System. everything else was insignificant. right now stats (47m 22s since unplugged):
Android OS 49%
Display 13%
Android System 9%
that is HUGE compared to any time i've ever looked before. i'm running KaosFroyo v38 (complete fresh flash, though this problem started while using v37). List of apps...those with a star i can remember have updated recently:
chrome to phone
music junk*
SetCPU (set to 19200 - 604800, profile of screen off 160 - 480)
snesoid
switchpro widget
tapatalk pro
wireless tether
quick boot
usaa mobile
tfln +widget
touiteur (and premium)
Premotedroid
Winamp
adfree
the weather channel
skype
wiimote controller
shazam*
GPS Status & toolbox
astro file manager
my verizon*
launcherpro*
flex dialer lite
qwiklist voice
chandroid
facebook for android*
google voice
gmail
google maps
street view on google maps
my best guess is the problem is LauncherPro but i don't know how to monitor an app like that. any ideas?
I would check your network usage. If an app is constantly sending/receiving data, then it'll drain your battery pretty quick. I don't think it would be LauncherPro. I've been using the paid version for a long time now and have no problems with it.
Get spare parts. It will give you a more accurate look at the battery usage.
Sent from my Floyo Tazz using XDA App
Under battery history, in spare parts, I selected network usage and one of the bars is named "0". When I select it, the history portion of the app force closes. This "0" app is the big drain.
Sent from my FroyoEris using Tapatalk
I've seen the "0" mystery app before and couldn't figure out what it was. It wasn't draining my battery though.

Help solve SOD [wifi variant] with DroidWall

Last Update: 8/6/2011
Basis:
Wifi always on causes SOD. There are numerous anecdotal reports that setting wifi to be off with screen off reduces/stops SOD.
Plan:
Utilize DroidWall to limit wifi use by applications and find out which applications appear to be safe by selecting specific applications and seeing if SOD occurs.
Why:
Even though turning off wifi with screen off saves battery, some people would like their nook to be pushing/updating with wifi when it is in sleep, getting emails, messages, etc.
What you can do:
1) Download/Install DroidWall
2) Using WHITELIST, check off one or two applications that you utilize the most.
3) Turn _ON_ firewall
4) Update the rules whenever you add or remove apps.
5) Change your wifi setting to always on (advanced options under wifi settings * need to hit menu button to see this option in cm7)
Apps so far tested without problems:
Email (stock)
Improved Email
Dolphin HD 6.0
Epocrates
Market
Amazon Appstore
Possible SOD related App
Downloads, Media Storage, DRM Protected Content Storage, Download Manager (this is one heading in DroidWall)
Apps so far tested that _might_ cause SOD:
*from posts, possibly Latitude.
Testing
K9 Mail
RoadMap
Rom Manager
Netflix
Executive Assistant+
Please post your findings.
I will update this post as we get more information.
Thanks.
DroidWall did not solve it for me... in fact it wouldn't even run on my Nook.
It works for me. At first, I forgot to turn on the firewall, then I forgot to update rules when I changed things.
So far, I have the following for access to wifi:
Market
Appstore(amazon)
Dolphin Browser HD
Epocrates RX
Email
Improved Email
I just turned on Appstore and Market for the first time tonight, so I'm not sure how well it will do.
I use my nook all the time at work, probably turn it on from lockscreen sleep about 15-20 times over 10 hours, so if I don't get a SOD by the next day, I will put market and amazon appstore on the safe side.
Interesting development:
I got my 1st SOD today.
Please note my active programs at this time.
Please note that it occured after I started the combined service noted in the OP:
Downloads, Media Storage, DRM protected Content storage, Download Manager in the Droidwall options.
I will remove this option (which makes it impossible to update market aps for that matter) and see if the SOD doesn't happen for the next 3 days. The restart it and see if I get SOD again.
If this is the cause, then I should be able to show that SOD occurs with it active.
nm
10chars.
Using white list and only allow full-time wifi access to "linux kernel" and "apps running as root"
Never have more than one or two other apps besides these access to wifi when in sleep mode. I never allow gapps full-time wifi access and that goes double for market.
Where did this idea come from? *ducks and runs*
I do believe drm checks are screwing with the nook.
Sent from my NookColor using XDA Premium App
Just wanted to pop in and say thanks for the very useful testing.
Okay, update - I left the downloads/media store etc on the last 3 days and haven't had another SOD. So I'm not sure what to think about that. I will move forward and enable K-9mail today and see how things go over the next couple days.
here's my take on it: it has to do with the router, or some configuration of it.
I have a wrt54gs v1.1 at home and a wrt54g v4 at work, both running tomato software, both with Cox internet.
I get CONSISTENT SODs at work, as a side note the router is a also crashing for an unknown reason. the two don't happen at the same time. I've been trying to grab logs for weeks can't explain it or the fact the nook NEVER SODs at home.
the nook can run at home for days perfect, once at work it can SOD 6 times a day or more.
there has to be more going on than an errant app.

Can you clarify what you mean by "reduces/stops" ? Does it reduce it or does it stop it ?
Also, I've been away for awhile - is this the only SOD cause that is not fixed in the current CM7 nightlies code ?
Thanks !!
I've had SOD at home and at work. It's possible we both might have a problem.
I'm currently sitting at 36 hours of up time with the below white listed items. Without droid wall enabled I would consistently get SOD. I am working towards white listing all items one by one to see what causes a SOD. I have discovered that if I white list Google Maps I will get a SOD. However, until I white list all other items I am not prepared to call Maps as the cause of my SOD.

Thanks, if you go without SOD for 3 days straight like this, I will add these problems to the safe list.
I only get it once I run the Pandora app, close it, and after some time in background, sod.
My experience has been that using the Green Power app in Market keeps my NC alive for a week or more of light use and completely stops SOD. When I disabled Green Power last night, SOD happened, so I was happy to see this thread. It is definitely related to wifi.
For anyone that wants a quick workaround, I do recommend this app because it tells your NC to check wifi on regular intervals so I still get notifications / emails but wifi is not on all the time which saves battery.
WPA_SUPLICANT task
Hi,
I have been getting SOD. My workaround has been to manually turn off
WiFi before I turn screen off - this seems to have worked.
I didn't have them under CM7.03. I have been getting them on all
the nightlies I have tried since them, currently using N146
Mentioned above is an app called GreenPower, I thought I would try this.
I still get SOD with it. (I think I just used the default settings)
This time after powering back on, I looked at my SystemPanel app traces.
It looked like the (task?) WPA_SUPPLICANT was using 100% CPU sometime after
I turn off the display.
Attached are 2 screen captures from System Panel:
One with last 2 hours, showing recent 100% WPA_Supplicant CPU usage SOD
One showing 8 hours of apps running with most CPU usage.
Note System panel is showing device charge constant, but after reboot,
charge is much lower (last night it discharged totally)
Also attached are two alogcat captures - not sure if they have useful data
or not though.
One from SOD earlier in the day
One from recent SOD captured in screen SystemPanel capture above.
Hope this helps...

I tried Green Power and my nc hasn't had a SOD since you posted this. Thanks for the recommendation. I used to get SOD on a daily basis.
I used to get sod even with green power. So I set 2 profiles with tasker one for wifi off when screen is off and one for wifi on when screen is on. No sod for a week.

Two questions. Using Green Power, my wifi does not connect when I wake it up with the nook button. Secondly, when I try to wake up my bluetooth Xoom keyboard by pressing the connect button several times, it will sometimes reboot. Anybody having similiar problems?

[FEEDBACK] Best Apps for Photon #2

This has been asked previously about root apps. However, now that the Photon is a bit more mature I am curious as to the following:
What are the most useful apps (root or non) running on your Photon?
*When replying please give a description as to what the benefits are and what makes it so useful to you.
Mine....
1) Titanium Backup (paid version, root required) - For the backups and quick uninstalls.
2) Root Explorer (paid, root) - Still best file manager I've used.
3) Juice Defender (using the free one) - Only been running it for a week but seems to really help my battery life when off of WiFi. Thinking about going to the Ultimate version.
4) XDA app (using the free version) - Lets me keep up when mobile.
5) Simple Sound Profile Widget (free) - Since setting times up for the sound modes isn't my thing, this allows me to apply custom sound settings when I want and do it easily.
6) FTP Server (free)- For quick and easy file transfers with no wires. Always works.
6) Terminal Emulator (free) - Obvious I think.
7) K-9 Mail (free) - Still best email client I have used for POP.
8) Folder Organizer (paid) - Using this with SPB Shell. Gives me ability to use custom icons, spacing, themes, and hide the titles.
I'm going to stop at eight for now. Might add more later.
So far these are the apps I make the most use of:
Script manager (free version, using it for running scripts and such)
Widget Locker (lock screen replacement, paid version)
Go Launcher EX for all my sexy effect needs.
Root Explorer (Paid version)
Titanium backup obviously
That's about it for my core apps.
Seriously? Just one person with feedback? I want to be using my phone to the fullest and there is more out there in the Market that some don't know about.
How bout this then.....What do you want your phone to do but can't find an app that will do it?
I would like an app that will reboot my phone periodically at specific day/time. Gonna try tasker and see if it will. Didn't see anything else in Market to accomplish this.
I don't think most people haven't rooted yet. I just got mine like a week ago. I'm still reading up. I will root but, there is a lot to know.

Now herein lies the problem. My phone did basically everything I needed it to straight of the box. If anything, I had to remove some stuff that it did because I didn't use it (social networking).
I'm still learning the ropes tho', new to android so if you ask me the same exact question in 2 months time I may give you a completely different answer.

For as long as I've been a member here, I don't think I've ever started two threads in one day in a Dev section that I was so unsure belonged in the dev section... so Mods, please forgive if this is in the wrong place.
I thought it would be helpful to get a running list of apps that can be frozen with Titanium that won't cause any FC's or other problems. I'm a bit extreme with this, I think, compared to most... I tend to freeze (or remove) a LOT of stuff.... but so far I haven't caused any problems. Here is my list:

So far, so good. And I've little doubt that much more can be removed... on my Dinc, I always ran a Sense ROM, but I'd run them REALLY lean. I will be experimenting more with what can be removed and will update the list as I do...
EDIT: Froze quite a few more apps, still no FC's or other issues, here are the additional ones...

Do these apps re-install after a reboot like others are reporting with temp root or does "freezing" have better results than deleting?
Freezing them sticks after reboots. It is almost as good as removing them.
But OP, you really went to town on the freezing.
Thanks for testing these! Appreciated.

hahah I said in the first post, I freeze a LOT of stuff. You can freeze as few or as many of those apps as you need, I just wanted to guinea pig it and see what would crash, so far no issues.
As mentioned above, freezing DOES stick after a reboot. However, unlike freezing on a fully rooted device, freezing here doesn't remove the apps' market links, and doesnt remove them from the apps list in settings. It DOES remove them from the app drawer and keep them from running, which is what matters
I just tried to freeze apps with "Bloat Freezer Free" and most of the apps came back after a reboot. Is everyone else using Titanium? Does it "freeze" apps differently?
Thanks!
I've only ever used Titanium to freeze apps but you need the pro version. WELL worth the money, this app has proven very useful.
Added almost 20 more apps...
I need to have temp root going to make this happen, right?
I'm on a Mac. Loving the rezound so far even without root .
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
yep must have temp root and using Titanium or something equivalent
I'm moving this to the App section since it is more related to that section.
Thanks for this list, but have you tried removing any, if possible?
Bluetooth busted?
Trying to troubleshoot it but I froze most of the apps from your first list but noticed this afternoon I could not get my Bluetooth to turn on. Could be a coincidence but any chance freezing one of those apps could cause that?
trying to get mine to temp root it self would cause BT to quit working
reboot would fix it most of the time
I don't think any of the apps I listed would cause BT to stop working. I did try to remove an app once and it crashed Titanium. I figure without S-OFF that's not going to be happening any time soon, since we can't get the /system/ folder mounted in R/W.
Thanks for this. I loaded my own task manager and I couldn't believe all the junk that autostarts on boot. This cut down on that signficantly!
Now I just can't wait for a debloated ROM to come out.

I just tried to freeze apps with "Bloat Freezer Free" and most of the apps came back after a reboot. Is everyone else using Titanium? Does it "freeze" apps differently?
Thanks!

You can use App Quarantine:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.ramdroid.appquarantine
Free and does the same thing -- I've used it on my Rezound (I have Titanium Backup as well, but this has a lighter footprint and our temp root is finicky).

Problematic Apps

As many of you know, my phone(s) have been riddled with the following main problems:
Random Reboots
Clock Freezing
Keyboard Lockups
Therefore, I decided to get a 3rd replacement but I had to remove joker's Skinny ROM and return my phone to stock before doing so. I'm traveling this week and the Sprint stores in this area are lets say "less than accommodating" so I decided to just keep my phone until I get back to my home store.
To my surprise, my phone has not experienced any of the above problems for two days now. This lets me know those problems were probably caused by an app or combination of apps. My phone is stock, locked, and rooted.
Here are the apps I have installed on my phone right now and have no problems so far:
Brightest Flashlight Free
World of Goo Demo
AccuWeather for Android
Alarm Clock Plus
Astro
Battery Circle
Billy Graham
Titanium Backup
Deja Office
Smart Keyboard Pro
English for Smart Keyboard Pro
Enhanced Email
GTY
No Lock
Pandora
Reboot Logger
Root Check Basic
System Recovery (CMW)
Below are the other apps I usually have installed on my phone when my phone is not working properly. Please let me know if there are any known issues with any of them. Which app(s) do you think is the source of the problems my phone was experiencing previously?

Wow!

With that many apps installed, I doubt you'd be able to figure out which ones were causing the problems...

Yeah, I didn't know I had that many apps until I typed them all.
Best advice anybody can give with that big of an app list is to phase it in slowly in small batches and give it a day or two between batches to see when the problem starts surfacing again. To be honest most likely it's some combination of apps interfering with each other rather than a single problematic app but either is possible.
Whenever you experience weird freezing/slowing/power cycling you always want to try to go to stock with no apps first to see if the problem persists. These sort of issues are almost always software-related in my experience. When people replace their phones they always immediately dump everything back on to the replacement phone as quickly as possible and then wonder why they have the same issue.
Hope this helps you nail down the problem.
Yes, I plan to install 3 apps every other day in order of importance to narrow in on the problematic app. Hopefully, i'll find it.
It looks like my problems may be caused by Go Launcher, Smart Keyboard Pro, or Enhanced Email.
I'm leaning towards Smart Keyboard Pro or Enhanced Email as the culprit since many MoPho users seem to use Go Launcher with no problems.
Anyone using Smart Keyboard Pro or Enhanced Email with no problems?
The stock file explorer was the culprit for my reboots. When moving files from internal to SD (or v.versa) it reboot every single time if the file was bigger than 10mb.
I removed go launcher (hated to). It was causing problems when I used the mobile dock which has it's own launcher. The phone would become nearly unresponsive after docking it. Removing go launcher solved the problem

Thanks, that's good to know! So maybe the problem is with Enhanced Email.
Is anyone using that app successfully?
The problem is that you have too many apps installed!

I've been running my phone without these three apps and with ZERO problems for over a week. I installed Enhanced Email this morning and have already received two random reboots. If I uninstall EE and my reboots go away, then it looks like EE is the problem (in my case) or maybe it is conflicting with another app. Since I don't have the time nor patience to figure out which app it may be conflicting with, I'll just be finding a new email client.

Over 230 Apps, Who Downloaded the whole damn Market now? Lol, and I wonder why my keyboard keeps locking up... The phone freezes, but seriously, most of these apps are essential for me... My phone works great with these apps installed, then after 20-30 days I have freezing, keyboard locking up, etc. then I go back to a factory reset and start all over, any suggestions (other than to stop installing/using/keeping so many apps?)
---------- Post added at 10:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:38 PM ----------
I use Go Launcher & Smart Keyboard Pro All of the time.
But, I have ALWAYS suspected Go Launcher Ex & other Go Products to be the culprits...

I LOVE Go Launcher Ex, and Smart Keyboard Pro. I will stop using them and see if that solves the problem... I doubt the issue is the number of apps on my device, after all, this is a high-end device that can handle it...
For me, it looks like Smart Keyboard Pro was causing the keyboard lockups and Enhanced Email was causing the random reboots. No more problems since I uninstalled both of them. I replaced SMP with A.I.Type keyboard and I'll stick with the stock email client for awhile. If I can go another week with no issues, I'll try Go Launcher again to see if any problems resurface. I really like Go Launcher too!
P.S. I'm mourning the mandatory removal of Enhanced Email. It blows away all of the other email clients out there. Darn!!!

I hate not being able to use Smart Keyboard Pro!!! I liked Enhanced Email, but it was causing too many issues for me... I worked VERY VERY closely with the developer of A.I. Type Keyboard, to create it in its beta stages!!! Great Keyboard!!!
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT USE GO LAUNCHER / GO LAUNCHER EX/ ANY GO PRODUCTS!!! They are your culprits, I am 95% Sure...
Yes, A.I.Type is awesome! Thanks for the role you played!
Go Launcher is not the culprit in my case because I haven't had it installed in about 2 months and the problems prevailed without it.
@deedscreen: Since you too abandoned EE, which email client are you using now?

Glad to work with him and get A.I.Type out of the Beta Stages...
I am using Gmail right now... but eventually I will use something better... what apps do you share in common with my list that I posted? Maybe you and I can get to the bottom of this!
