I recently took my phone to the UK, and it seems to get no signal at all. When I do the *#*#4636#*#* service menu, it only states that it has usa bands (my captivate and nexus one had multiple bands to choose from). Does anyone know of a workaround to get this phone working overseas?
Called AT&T and they were no help in getting the phone connected.

AT&T does that **** on purpose because they want you to pay for their international plan...if you talk to them about it, they'll tell you that you need to sign up for a plan that will let you go out of the US with signal.. (it's not permanent, but you pay for the month that you are gone).
Problem is I already have the international roaming plan.
If you're trying to use a foreign simcard it wont work unless you have a sim unlock code.
Otherwise there is no reason it shouldnt work overseas on your ATT sim card if you have the right plan. it has the correct 3g bands to work anywhere in UK/EU on 3g.
It could be that its not pulling down the right APN settings for orange or whatever provider its trying to roam on. Just a thought.
Just out of curiosity where in the UK were you? I was there in Dec with my AT&T Blackberry (worked fine) and will be there in June with my BB and my Atrix (didn't have a personal international phone when I was there in Dec as I had been on Sprint at the time). In the past I've had no problems - taken past AT&T phones to Germany, France, Spain, Scotland, Slovenia and Italy and they've always worked (that was with my old HTC Fuze which I had totally unlocked). The only place I ever had a problem was rural Wyoming about 100 miles west of Sturgis two summers ago. It wouldn't work but for one corner of the driveway at the cabin we were staying at.
I have been in London. I actually brought my samsung captivate, and put my at&t sim card, and everything worked just fine. If I place my sim card back in the atrix it looks as if it does not detect the signal at all.

So i got a tmobile Samsung Galaxy s Vibrant right. and i live up in canada the phone is unlocked and everything but i cant connect to 3G data... i keep hearing thins around the web of people saying tmobile has Blocked the frequency of 3G Data in canada. is that possible? or just a rumor? cause i would just LOVE to use this phone to its potentional not just talk and text....
Only Wind and Mobilicity are gonna work. I'm from Toronto though don't know what else is available Canada wide. All others you are gonna need either the i9000 or the captivate for bell and rogers
3g worked up in canada with a rogers network SIM for me. That was about a month ago. I'm going up Thursday will let you know. Typically I travel to Vancouver weekly and swap my tmobile sim for a rogers.
Well i have a rogers sim car with an unlocked Tmobile vibrant. so i dont get it... it works for some but not for others?
Still works for me. In Richmond BC right now on rogers sim speedtest results 3617up 478dn
I'm thinking about picking one up for review. I'm on T-Mobile and I know the phones come unlocked, but I want to be sure there aren't any hidden surprises or anything like that. If I put in a T-Mobile USA sim card, am I guaranteed to get Edge signal?
Where did you find out that this phone will come unlocked on T-Mobile?

He never said that.
He asked if the unlocked i9100 will at least get edge on tmobile network.
good question..wonder if anybody will get it
I think most of the world uses the same frequencies for UMTS EDGE, so yes... an international Galaxy S II should work on T-mobile with EDGE, though you will have to program all of the tower/apn data into the phone manually to get everything to work
Probably not worth extra cost and effort to get a phone which will always be slow due to frequency mis-match.
It would only work on 2g for T-mobile USA.
I'll enjoy the G2X for now and then switch to the SGS2 when it get's to T-Mobile.

I tried, and failed. Stupid battery.
I'm trying the Sensation or SGS2 first, whichever one reaches them first.

I also tried and failed. Stupid screen. Waiting for sgs2 now. The tilt zoom and etc look awesome.
Bump, still wondering if ant T-Mobile users got the phone yet.
I've placed an order with Handtec, but thanks to a long back-and-forth security process I have to wait for next weeks batch of devices (ugh).
I'm assuming 2g will work fine - I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't. I've bought international phones for use on T-mo back in the pre-3g days, which in a way I'm still stuck in. Rural Iowa is not exactly blanketed in 3g...
Off-topic.
http://www.bgr.com/2011/05/05/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-passes-fcc-with-att-3g-bands/
GT-I9020T (Nexus S) - T-Mobile
GT-I9020A (Nexus S) - ATT
If you are to follow the naming convention above, then this new phone that passed the FCC should be for T-Mobile.
GT-I9100T (GS2) - T-Mobile
it will work on 2g but nothing else until the version that supports tmobiles AWS 3g/4g bands os released. im thinking about pulling the trigger anyways

3G/4G will not work as they use 1700/2100 instead of 850/1900
you'll only get EDGE/2G
Hi I have a SGS2 on tmobile USA. Here are the issues. I phone is ASIA version rooted.
Tried a few mods didnt like it much.
Big issue is the phone defaults to GSM (2g) and the only other option on the phone is WCDMA. On tmobile it doesnt show edge or HSPA so I can connect for faster speeds.
I went to the tmob store the guy said the firmware needs to be updated but samsung doesnt have anything new.
I am hoping to download stock mod from say europe or canada that enables 4G to see if itll work on tmob. I called tmob they said they cant help as they dont support the phone! i asked for the bands that tmob uses 3G/4G on ( they refused to give it to me)
Tmob came in late in the game for 3g/4g so im not sure if they are on some diff bands that the phone cant catch. although i have not tried inserting an Att sim in it to see if it will get 4g speeds.
if anyone knows of any other options please let me know at this point im paying for 4G speeds on tmob but getting 2G.

Dude, the GS2 doesn't support T-mobile bands. Therefore you'll only get EDGE speed on that phone until you get their Variant or switch to AT&T.

You can never get past 2g on T-Mobile, ever. It's a hardware issue not software, you are stuck with EDGE speeds unless you switch to AT&T.
Thanks... I guess ill be selling this phone if I have to remain on Tmob.. or get me an atnt account! tmob has the least expensive plans .

You can get a cheap medianet plan and get 3g since AT&T will not recognize this as a smartphone, the plan is unlimited too
I'll be relocating to the UK in a few months and have been trying to dig up some information on whether or not I can use my ATT Atrix in the UK for data (I know the voice should work just fine). My phone is SIM unlocked.
I've been hearing about how the Atrix allows you to switch bands using some key combinations etc. Not sure what all that's about.
Anyone tried to use a US Atrix in the UK and get 3G data speeds without any issues?
i have att atrix and i live in italy, it work for me. I was on holiday in London, and the phone worked fine

Before the last OTA update on my ATT Atrix, I visited Amsterdam and the UK and was unable to get signal with my AT&T SIM. Since the OTA update I have noticed I can no longer enter the "Select network" or "Operator Selection" menu options. I have not visited the UK since and of course hope that I will be able to get service next time.
i'm stay in italy, with vodafone italy and correct apn it work fine, in uk I had to activate the roaming because my carrier there isn't in uk, this is normal.
I have a question... when I go overseas w\ my old Infuse, I always had to flash a non-AT&T radio to truly "unlock" the device. The radio ATT had on the firmware made it so you can ONLY roam on the partners AT&T wanted you to be able to, even if you had a SIM from say Thailand.
For example, if I go to Thailand, there are about 5 GSM carriers. AT&T partners with 1 of them. If I put in a SIM from the UK who partners with 4 of them, the ONLY carrier the radio will let me latch onto is the ONE overlapping carrier that AT&T also partners with. Flashing a non-ATT radio resolves the issue, but it's quite frustrating to have had to deal with on the ATT Infuse, so I always used the Rogers radio, which didn't have the limitation.
I assume that's going to be the case with the AT&T SGSII that I just bought as well. Does anyone have any radio suggestions? And since we don't yet have ROM Manager, am I going to have to flash with my PC or what?
Thanks as always!

Interesting - I've never seen any indication that Rogers radios in the Infuse had this positive effect. Especially since the Indian users on the Infuse forums had no problems with any Indian carrier that had frequency bands the Infuse supported. Of course, maybe that's because they always used a local-carrier SIM, and not something a little wacky like a UK sim in Thailand with a US phone...
I9100 radios will not work on the I777.

HEHE, yeah. AT&T has several roaming partners in India, so odds are they'd be able to use it just fine with any SIM even if a non-Indian SIM.
UK sims are not as uncommon as you think. MOST global travel sims are registered in the UK or Eastern Europe. Mine is a Tru SIM. Tru is from the UK (you may have heard of their VOIP service, TruPhone). The SIM has a US number, it's just UK-based, since their carriers are far ahead of the US in terms of EU roaming, so it gives the most beneficial rates of any SIM.
It's really the most noticeable in countries where AT&T only has 1 or 2 roaming partners, but the country has 4-5 GSM carriers. Most southeast asian countries like Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore fall into this category, so it can be a bit annoying be limited by my phone. Even in Japan last month I had issues because the roaming carrier Tru will allow (almost any) didn't jive with what AT&T's radio wanted to attach to (it had weak signal). Flashing the rogers radio solved, but hopefully there will be radio updates out for GSII.
EDIT: it's likely that it's not less of a restriction, but just a better roaming relationship with more countries. Canadian Carriers are a bit more "traveled" and progressive than Ma Bell. AT&T loves to advertise that you can use your phone in many countries, but they don't say that in many countries the one and only provider they roam on has TERRIBLE coverage or only a tiny part of the country covered and just gives them a good deal to boost their roaming count.
BTW, good to see you again Entropy! I missed you the couple weeks I had Infuse while you were away, hehe. Glad to be back w\ a phone you have so I can enjoy the great things you put out!
I could be wrong, but i thought it was the SIM card that told the phone what towers were roaming and not roaming. The only way an AT&T phone would keep you from going on another providers towers in another country is if you were still using your AT&T SIM card, or if your phone simply didn't work on the band of the carrier you were trying to use.

Well a SIM is just like an ID, and the carriers will either let you register with that ID, or not let you register. However, AT&T in all of their glory modified the radio so when you go to a country, the radio will disallow access to a carrier. I am not quite sure how they do it. For example, if you go to Thailand w\ an ATT sim card you'll likely roam on DTAC or AIS. You can't roam on Tru w\ an AT&T sim card because they don't have a roaming agreement, but the phone fully works fine if you put a Tru sim into it. Where the radio also limits you somehow, is if you have a SIM from say O2 in the UK, and you pop it into an unlocked Infuse 4G, you can't roam onto Tru, even though Tru is a roaming partner of O2, and the phone fully supports the frequencies and everything works just fine.
Weird right? Now flash the Rogers radio. Since Rogers has Tru as a roaming partner, it works if you put in a Rogers SIM, Tru SIM, O2, etc.... that's where the mystery and misery lie. I'm really hoping they didn't do the same to the SGSII's radio.
I haven't used a Sprint phone before with a sim card. Can you use the Note 3, with CM11, overseas on a gsm network?
Anyone?
Just used mine in the UK no problem. Sprint unlocked for me and when I got to the UK bought a O2 prepaid sim. Called customer service and they texted me the APN settings which self installed. Took less 10 minutes. Got 3g and hspa with a best of 3mbs but I was in mostly rural areas. Can't comment on cm but if it didn't work you could just back it up flash sprint while over seas and do a restore when you get back.
