Theres a new version of the Swype beta that is IMMENSELY better than the preloaded swype that comes with the atrix, it literally fixes all the annoying things of the older Swype versions:
http://beta.swype.com/
Swype 3.x beta works with the method below!
Process:
1) Use Root Explorer/Terminal/ADB to backup and then delete Swype.apk from /system/app and libSwypecore.so from /System/lib
2) Download the installer from https://beta.swype.com/android/get/ (on your phone)
3) Use installer to login and install latest version of swype
After your first phone reboot, if you are experiencing Swype Force closes after installing the latest swype, uninstall swype from your phone and then reinstall it; it should no longer force close after reboot.
If you are still experiencing force crashing after reinstall, try wiping your dalvik cache within CWM. Thanks Dudeman Broguy.
If you want to get in the latest beta, sign up over here. Registrations are open right now, hurry before they close them again!
Thanks to playin4sheezy for figuring this out: post #12
yes, i have been using it all day and it looks and feels great! if you have sideloading enabled, when you start the install it will ask to over write the current one.

Im trying to use the installer and it tells me to disable swype, and you cant disable the built in one. Can you pm me the apk?
Yea, I get to the point where it says "Licensing Swype, please wait...." and it doesn't get past that.
You need to go into /system/app and move Swype.apk to a backup folder on /mnt/sdcard
Then go into /system/lib and do the same for libSwypeCore.so
Give it a reboot and then try to install the beta. It worked for me
How did you move the apk, it wont allow me to do so

you have to use root explorer (and be rooted) or you could use terminal/adb (still have to be rooted)
Sorry for the noob questions! Move it completely? or make a back up of it? and also any apps out there like root explorer but free ?
I tried the above steps but the libswypecore is still in the system folder when i move it as it is read only...

If youre rooted, root explorer is worth the money. You have to move Swype.apk completely, and make sure its not there after moving or the install wont work.
Make sure if you are in Root Explorer that you click the R/W button at the top to make the system folder Read/Write access. Then long press the files and click move and goto sdcard and make a folder named "whatever you want" then click paste..
Or you could do this using adb with Atrix plugged into the computer:
goto command prompt
type the following:
adb shell
su
mkdir /mnt/sdcard/swype_backup
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
cp /system/app/Swype.apk /mnt/sdcard/swype_backup
cp /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so /mnt/sdcard/swype_backup
rm /system/app/Swype.apk
rm /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so
Hopefully this gets you going

Is your phone rooted? If so, then when you typed su in adb shell(not terminal) did it ask you for superuser permission? If so, then you should make sure and accept it.
If your phone is not rooted, then I don't think your gonna get this working

I would suggest someone testing that you can in fact put it back to the stock setup. Mine somehow got deleted when i first got the phone, and it doesn't come back, factory reset or otherwise.

i have been messing with swype for the last few days
i can guarentte you that if u installed / mounted a messed up version of swype (WVGA with a language pack in my case), you can just use put the backup stock swype back on /system/app and it'll be fine again
i get an error on sign-in into the installer, says device id dont match. any ideas?
EDIT: I had to log into mySwype and remove my old phone (nexus one) and then now it works!
I just bought an SGS2 from a carrier in Brazil (TIM) but it came full of crappyware and most importantly: without the Development Mode option in Settings > Applications !!
So basically, although I could root it by replacing the kernel, I'm still not able to adb shell on it because of this issue.
Does anyone have an idea on how to enable the Development Mode through ConnectBot?
Also, how do I remount the SD from ConnectBot with 'rw'? You know... to remove all the crappyware...
Thank you

dont you have cwm with replacing the kernel? so cant you flash a custom rom and with that everything you want? (still not dev relevant )

ah okay. cm7 is already available almost everything is working. there are stock roms available for download in intratech's thread. without replacing your current rom it'll be difficult. I cant help more :-/
This thread should be in Q&A.
The first steps you need to take (rooting & custom recovery) are available in the CF-Root thread

he already did that: So basically, although I could root it by replacing the kernel, I'm still not able to adb shell on it because of this issue.
My question is: how to enable Development Mode from ConnectBot (terminal) directly from inside Android? Remembering that I have root
Again not dev and I'm not sure about connectbot but why don't you just replace settings.apk? Wouldn't t that take care of it instantly?
To replace settings.apk I need adb shell, or read-write access to mounted SD.
The reason I'm posting this to Dev question, is because devs are probably the ones with knowledge on how to do this.
I have root, I have terminal access to root (ConnectBot for example) and that's all.
I cannot adb shell into it because Development Mode option is not present on Settings > Applications.
How do I remount with read-write access the SD ? This way, I can download a settings.apk (new question: any hint from where I can get the stock-stock version?) and cp to /syste/app through ConnectBot
Use terminal emulator and remount system rw and then replace settings? Won't that work ?

Must I replace SettingsProvider.apk too?

afaik different framework --> wont work. if you have a fast internet connection download a custom rom(based on samsung i.e. not miui or cm7), extract it and pick the settings.apk
take care. should match your present firmware. probably 2.3.3 and most of the users are on 2.3.4 or 2.3.5(miui+cm7)
or if anybody is so kind he could upload his settings.apk (i'm on miui so sorry)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182498
Flash that kernel with odin.
Download just about any rom, minus cm7, grab SettingsProvider.apk and Settings.apk from the zip file (/system/app/SettingsProvider.apk)
put them somewhere you can find them, open a command prompt in that directory.
(if you haven't setup adb properly you will need to drop everything in with the adb.exe file, but I would suggest setting it up properly.)
adb shell
su (accept on phone)
mount -o remount,rw /system
exit
exit
adb push SettingsProvider.apk /system/app
adb push Settings.apk /system/app

I don't want to install CM7 yet because it still lacks some features.

modaco's prebaked ROM offers stock + a few tweaks that most people would find useful.
And although your questions would be best answered by those with developer knowledge, it still doesn't mean it should be posted here.
Also, even if you don't have terminal access, I'm pretty sure with root you can use Root Explorer to copy over the new settings.apk and setting the appropriate permissions.
Alright, thanks a lot!

1) Use Towelroot.com to root phone
2) Install Supersu from the play store. Open it, install update, and reboot. (I had to reboot twice for some reason before this worked)
3) Confirm root with Root checker basic app from play store. (optional)
4) Install Busybox from Play store
-Open Busybox and click install. Should work with the new root privileges.
5) Copy the framework-res.apk file from the NC5 download above located in /system/framework, to the SDcard in a folder called NC5. (Renam the file to NC5framework-res.apk)
6) Install a Terminal Emulator from the play store and open it. Use the following commands.
Note: This does back up the original framework in case you want to go back to stock again. Do these in the order listed!!
All commands below are CaSe SeNsAtIvE
a) su
b) busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
c) busybox cp /system/framework/framework-res.apk /mnt/extSdCard/NC5/NC5orig-framework-res.apk
d) busybox cp /mnt/extSdCard/NC5/NC5framework-res.apk /system/NC5framework-res.apk
e) busybox chmod 644 /system/NC5framework-res.apk
f) busybox mv /system/NC5framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk
g) reboot

Hi, in step 4 he says to install busybox from the playstore then open the busybox apk that is installed and install it (from within the apk).
Also you can assume for the all of the directions that windows explorer is not used, use root explorer on your phone.
You can assign permissions with a root file explorer, ans remember its critical when uou replace framework-res.apk you move and dont copy it there. If you just install safestrap you could just flash a zip that automates this process
I take no credit for this but I figured I'd share it credit goes to @xdabbeb from this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2467302 and credit goes to @markfm for the shortcut.
But I do take the credit in packaging it into a flashable zip
Here you go I made it easy with a flashable zip ( please read and follow the instructions)
Just flash the zip
Reboot
And you're good to go
If you get an error code when trying to enter the hidden menu then do the next step otherwise you're good)
Using root browser or similar app go into system/app and find the hiddenmenu.apk and click on it and click install
In terminal emulator type "su" then type "hiddenmenu" without the quotes of course and you're in
Here's the zip: https://mega.co.nz/#!r1RnTJBK!opW5B3y4sIOUBg21DuCMXpO4vD8f5frGfer-xBKa0-U
To get back the knock on feature if you've lost it once your in the hidden menu click on HW Device Test then click on Touch Test and in there near the bottom you'll see Touch Firmware Upgrade click that and then click OK wait about 15 seconds and you're set

You should be rooted and have busybox and terminal emulator installed.
In terminal, run :
su [enter]
mount -o rw,remount /system [enter]
chattr -R -i /system [enter]
Now you can edit system files, go to /system and rename or delete set_immutable.list.old
To make sure xposed would work I deactivated the huawei theme engine by editing the build.prop line ro.config.hwtheme=1 set it to 0 and voilà!

hi tychomat,
Which rom version have you because each time i edit the build.prop line ro.config.hwtheme=1 set it to 0, then I can't open the Settings which closed immediatly ?
Moreover, i don't have "ro.config.hwtheme=1" in buid.prop BUT in local.prop (data/cust/prop).
For my rom 7D-503L 4.4.2 Emui 2.3, there isn't "ro.config.hwtheme=1" in buid.prop
Ah, I have the 503L on 4.2.2, build 009. that must be why
Sorry I couldn't help, I've only started tinkering with it yesterday.
