I haven't rooted my Thunderbolt yet because the mobile hot spot feature is free until 5/15 but after that I'm planning to root. So my question is which wifi tether app works best and what version?
Thank you in advance
I rooted last night just to test the difference. With the mobile hot spot I get 19Mbps down, and with the wifi tether app I only get 8Mbps down.Did many test on each and got same results. With internet connection mode I was getting 25Mbps.
I get better results with the Wireless Tether app for rooted users...ALSO my phone would over-heat everytime i used the mobile hotspot from verizon after about ten min. of use...i do not over-heat at all using wireless tether.
I also get much better results with wireless tether for root users.
I get the same results. Wireless Tether works better for me
Wireless Tether
Which version of wireless tether works better?
Thanks,
Im using the newest from the marketplace and it works great
I agree as well Wireless Tether for Root users is the best way to go. I get better speeds and better battery life with this one, although it is still probably a good idea to keep plugged in when tethering.
Wireless Tether for Root Users
I've also used Barnicle, you can get it from the Market. I find that both Wireless tether and Barnicle have issues from time to tim but when one doesn't work the other usually does so I keep both on my phone
I use pre 2.0.5 b/c it creates a infrastructure style hotspot.
I'm not sure if the wireless tether app supports 4g yet, but I live in a 3g area and have had much better results with wireless tether over mobile hotspot.

Verizon hasn't done anything yet, but ATT sent a text to some jailbroken iPhone owners using a tethering app.

I just bought a thunderbolt on impulse. This time yesterday I had no plan to do so, but I woke up on the wrong side of the bed I guess.
Love the phone thus far, though coming from an EVO I don't feel much difference beyond the speed of the device.
Does anyone know ways to improve tethering? Using the FCC speedtest app I am getting 5-7Mbps Down adn 20-30Mbps Up pings all around 100. On my tethered XOOM I am getting an impressive 4-6ish down, 3-6ish up with pings from 50-150.
The numbers when I started this thread were about 3 and 3 which still beats my evos 1 and 1 in optimal conditions. Thus far the Thunderbolt seems to connect to 4G instantly and unlike the EVO the stock tethering app is 4G friendly, but more to the point the 700mhz seems to be proving to be less placement centric. I can have it on a chair in the corner of the room under a desk and it seems to still get damn good speeds. Where I am used to putting my EVO on a windowsill and still wanting better signal.
All that aside, my point of this thread is, has anyone found tweaks that increase tethering performance? Are certain channels better, or does less/no encryption increase performance?
Bump. I know I can't be the only one who wants an answer to the best way to tether.
im new to verizon and read that they are able to detect tethering from rooted devices. nice that we have tethering now, but when the time limit runs out will tethering be possible? has anyone tethered on verizon before without issue? is tethering truly unlimited, or is there a cap/throttle?

I've been tethering on my D1 for months and never been "detected". Tethered data looks like cell phone data to the provider. The only way I could see being detected is if the app you are using (the included one) sends some sort of flag. AFAIK the root wifi tether does nothing of the sort.
what are you guys using to tether? a 3rd party tethering app?
I've tethered heavily for at least 8 months on Incredible and Droid X. Never had an issue with detection. You will need root for third party app once root us achieved. Permanent root should come today. Then use app from market

Once you have root this program will let you use wifi to tether: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
There is one in the market too, but I've never used it...
-Edit-
Also been tethering for over a year on my Droid and have never had an issue with VZW. My highest month ever was only 4 gigs, I average around 1.5-2.
I think your reception issue is more in the higher quality of the VZW network compared to the lousy Sprint network your EVO is on. People don't like to admit it, but my friends on Sprint and AT&T all have spots in thier house where the phone only works, or works best, etc.... Verizon that is generally not an issue.

A bit off-topic here but I turned on MobileAP on Galaxy Tab (AT&T) so that I could check out the GTablet while I was @local officemax store, AT&T detects it and sent me email & SMS reminder that I will need to have a proper plan.
So yes, they should be able to detect.

All of my roms have network speed tweaks that improve your tethering :good:
so i tried to wireless tether my phone today to see if my new 4g connection was faster than my at home internet. however during a download i was only getting about 108kb/sec which is waaaay slow for 4g. im getting 2-3 mbps on the phone. im using barnacle wifi tether. is it the app? if so what app should i be using? FYI i dont want to use the actual verizon feature because they limit how much you can download per month.
edit: dur, if i read first... 2-3 mbps is still pretty slow for 4g on your phone though. you could try wireless tether: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

Get the one from Google. Verizon had Google take wifi-tether out of the market. Just make sure that you have install from unknown sources checked off.
that one still only says 3g and 2g in the description and it doesnt have a thunderbolt version. can anyone confirm it works with 4g and if so which version should i get?
It's a free app dude. Why not just try it?
because im out of town and dont have 4g and wont until monday.
I know that PDAnet claims to be capable of achieving very fast 4g speeds...I believe the description said 20-30 mbps, and it's a non rooted app. However, it isn't a wireless tethering app, you have to use a USB connection (or bluetooth, which will be slower.) If using a a USB cord is acceptable for you, or you can't find a wireless tethering app that you find to deliver adequite speeds for your needs, give that one a try.
Wifi tether worked for me i la,ok city, tampa, seattle should i continue, it has worked everywhere i have been either 4g or 3g,the phone is faster but it still works.

You can root it and use barnacle, or use the hotspot feature under the "wireless and network settings" if AT&T hasn't disabled it. I was planning on getting one earlier today, but wasn't able to get to the store before work.
Check the settings and see if "Tethering & portable hotspot" feature is there. If it is it will just use your regular data plan.
Ok thanks im going to just wait for a root to come out.

When I picked up my phone at AT&T they asked me if I wanted the family (?) tether plan for $45/mo. I said no. When I checked the phone at home, the tether option was there, so is it cool to tether the phone without getting a nasty gram?

The moment you turn that on and start using it you will get a notice that you will need to change to that tether plan. Unless you get PDAnet or root the phone and use one of those apps.
I rooted , used Titanium Backup and froze tethering manager app, wifi tethering now works fine with my android tablet.

Any link to rooting the AT&T version? Want to root and use the built in tether. As of now, when you try to use the tether it will say you need to have the tether option. Don't want to pay the extra for using it a few times a month.

Yep, you're right. I just tried it.
I guess I root.
You need to root the phone and unintall the Tethering Manager in order to use the built-in tethering features without paying for it.
Just remember that a lot of people have been getting nastygrams from AT&T even without interference from tethering manager. There has been a lot of speculation as to the cause, but naive tethering is detectable in a number of ways, so don't be surprised if they suddenly decide to up your bill by $20.
Has anyone actually used Barnacle with this phone?
I rooted and installed Barnacle, which has to be downloaded from their site because it is blocked in Market. I start Barnacle and it has SU privilege, but no device can see the hotspot it creates. Even when I create the WiFi network there is no connection.
I'm having the same problem as far as my phone telling me I need a tethering plan. So I called At&t & they said I'd have to basically lose my grandfathered in plan of Unlimited just so I can surf the net for an extra $45 a mnth!! WTF!! I Didn't have this problem with my Cappy.. If you want to tether without paying for it, you have to root and freeze/remove tethering manager, or use a third-party app. Plus, you still risk AT&T slapping you with the overpriced tethering plan if they catch you. Not really sure there is anything you can do.
I figured as much. I never had a problem up til today when I got my new Gs2. I don't tether much at all to be honest with you. But at&t screwed me cause now I'm without Internet so I can't root even if I wanted to. I think I have no choice but to get a wireless Internet card til I root & find a decent ROM. Thanks a bunch for the advice though.. Much appreciated!!

Cappy users are getting nailed right and left, same for Infuse users.
I've been OK, but so far I've only tethered Android tablets (Galaxy Tab 10.1) in the past month or two.

Earlier this year I used the hotspot on my Dell Streak to tether my laptop for an entire week. Never heard anything from AT&T. It has a stock ROM from another region and is rooted. I haven't unloaded any stock apps on it.

You don't necessarily have to download it from their site. If you have a wifi connection you should be able to put the phone in airplane mode, turn on wifi, and connect that way. Either that or remove the sim card and get on wifi. As long as the sim is either removed or disabled and you are on wifi the market will not be filtered.
Maybe you're trying to connect devices to it that can either only see an infrastructure mode access point or are set to only connect to those. My laptop didn't see mine at first, but then I changed the setting in the wireless to show all types of connections (ad-hoc and infrastructure) and it worked. I had to actually modify the wifi_supplicant file on my moto Xoom for it to see ad-hoc connections.

This one worked perfectly for me and I didn't need to use SuperOneClick after loading it as it was already rooted. Go here.
I never had any issues or nasty-grams from AT&T for wifi tether, but I only used it when I needed too which honestly, wasn't too often.
Is USB tether an option? or have they figured out a way to bill for that too? And can it be done without root?
I would also like to know if this is possible without buying their plan. Either EasyTether, PDANet, or Tether.com something like that. I'm hoping one of those will work otherwise it's a no go for me. I NEED some kind of tethering capability.
Still no answer to this?
You're either going to have to pay for T-Mobile's tethering service, find a tether app that works, or root your phone and wait for a custom ROM.
This phone was just realeased and not everyone has had the time to tinker with it, nor are there a lot of developers or experienced people roaming this forum yet.
Im assuming there is no mobile hotspot either ?
USB tethering does work with the Amaze 4g with PDAnet. I can confirm it.
The question i have is if someone with a rooted 4g using barnacle is able to wifi tether.
I have my old SIM card in it and it tethers just fine. Acer Iconia and laptop.

I don't understand why people just don't get the tethering option.
I broke down and upgraded to 10gb a month and it came with the wifi hotspot feature. And I NEED 10+gb a month. Currently I'm at 9.2gb and I still have a little over a week to go.

Ditto. They've (TMo US anyway) recently been giving free tethering/hotspot to anyone with 5gb or greater who asks, which is what I've got. And the built in tethering and hotspot both work great.
I've never gotten close to 5gb personally, but I just got the Amaze, and it is so much faster than my HD2 was (or even my cable) that I've basically been leaving WiFi off.

Actualy what tmo been doing is not giving away free tether but changing your data plan.and getting you to sign up for one of their 5gb or more plans.
I tried to get the free hotspot but I'm on a grandfathered unlimited data plan, and I'd be down graded to either the 5 or 10 gb.
And fyi I am very sure, just like the other carriers flow can tell if you are cheating, as in WiFi/tether hack. My rooted g2x had "free" tether, thoguh and never heard from tmo about it.

Thanks so much! Firefox "user agent switcher" add-on got the job done, now that wifi hotspot works, I do not need USB tether.
I use very little data and only tether very very sparingly, so really don't see the need of upgrade.
I used to have Wireless Tether for Root Users back on my s2, I think it came with CM7 but it was also a stand alone app, was basically the perfect app, gave root users a reliable un-throttled tether. I tried installing it after tr'ing my s4 but it just turns yellow and says there's an error then acts like it's working. I'm guessing because it hasn't been updated in about 2 years. is there something similar to this? I've read pdanet+ combined with foxfi is supposed to be good but it disconnects randomly I guess to encourage buying the premium version. I'm moving Monday and could use a reliable wireless tether for my girlfriend and a reliable wired tether for myself. I'd like to still be able to play LOL using my 4g and it should be possible as my friend tethered both of us off of his sprint 4g. here's the old app i'm referring to:
