ive posted this in a couple threads looking for help. No answers. Anybody with knowledge of this please help me...lol
My vibrant is soft bricked. I can access 2e recovery but cannot get into CWM at all. I dont even have the update.zip in my internal. I can get into download mode but odin will not recognize my device. (believe me when I tell you Ive tried it all on multiple computers using different cables, usb slots, etc.). I actually fell asleep at my desk last night trying it all. My question is, can I somehow access the internal storage of my vibrant through my pc possibly ? In order to place the cwm update.zip in the root folder then enabling me to "reinstall packages" through 2e recovery ?
Any help is much appreciated. This is killing me.
Dumb question, but do you have another phone/device which uses microSD cards? Could you simply swap the microSD and copy it?
Or does the update.zip need to specifically be stored in the internal storage?
Also, not wanting to second guess you or anything, but which driver did you install for Odin?
No questions dumb and yeah i've tried that. The update definitely has to be on the internal
ive installed and uninstalled and reinstalled numerous drivers. Starting with the ones posted throughout xda
have you tried reinstalling the drivers?
yeah ive tried everything on different comps with different os' from xp to vista. Even my macbook pro with windows 7 running on parallels desktop and nothing with odin. Mind you ive used odin before succesfully on the same comp im having problems with now. I gave up on that idea. Im trying to see if i can access the internal storage via the pc with me only being able to get into recovery and download mode

+1 Also, do you have Kies Mini installed? I've found that the driver installed alongside Kies works well.
Also, have you tried Heimdall? It's an open-source alternative to Odin. Might be worth a shot.
i had kies but im not familiar with it at all. Same with heimdall. I went through some guides but I was so frustrated at that time it was like reading binary code
Do you have adb installed on your computer?
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
I downloaded and installed the sdk from there. Is there something more I should have also ?
Still looking into it, but I'd say your best chance of success might be through adb in recovery.
Thats what I want to do but I know very little when it comes to adb. Ive dealt with it in on the G1 but im not too familiar with it. Can you help with that ?
reminder I can only get the download mode and recovery 2e running not clockwork or 3e or any of that
Ok, think I might have a procedure ready. Just a sec.
I cant thank you enough for even trying to help me. I know this is a pain
No problem. So you do have adb setup?
I do but my comp isnt detecting my phone at all

Yikes. Ok, so if you boot into recovery and plug the phone in, running "adb.exe devices" doesn't list anything?
I run adb.exe but it flashes a cmd prompt on my screen quickly then disappears
i just opened SDK manager and it needed to update and install packages. Sooooo thats what its doing now

Ok, go to Start Menu, Run and type cmd.exe
Type "cd" followed by the directory in which the SDK is installed. For me, this is
"cd C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools"
Then type "adb.exe devices"
"adb.exe is not recognized as an internal or external comman, operable program or batch file"
wtf
im going to uninstall the sdk and reinstall it. Maybe i didnt do something right

So I'm trying to get back to HTC to test a few things.
My keyboard is not working well at all with Froyo for some reason and I'd like to make sure it's Froyos problem (anybody else got this problem?)
I've found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
I run the wizard and it can't find my phone, though it's connected to the usb and all.
Is that how it should be done?
There is a thread somewhere by btdag called ruu and usb errors solved. That should sort you out.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
Looks like this thread covers exactly what I'm looking for (including the keyboard issue):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=750318
Basically:
For anyone having issues with Error 155(CID-checks fail, perhaps?) or 171(USB fail) while trying to restore a rooted HTC Hero to stock with an official RUU-exe, this is what worked for me where nothing else did:
- Create Goldcard
- Extract ROM.ZIP from the Official RUU exe you want to use. I downloaded it from their main site
- Rename to HEROIMG.zip
- Boot to flashboot mode (Volume down + Power on)
- Flash.
- Reboot and enjoy your new stock HTC Hero.

Haven't tried yet but should do the trick.
Haven't found the "ruu and usb errors solved" thread though.
Thanks!
[Guide] Drivers & RRU Errors Solved
... If you need it...
This is frustrating.
Got stuck in the very first step of both guides.
The one saying to make a gold card, I can't even run adb on windows. It says command not found on cdm.
So I'm going to the more reliable guide with the screenshots.
Right on the first step when you need to uninstall drivers, I select and click "uninstall" and nothing happens.
Gotta love windows.
Anyone who succeded doing this and how?

Were you in the correct folder when you tried to use adb? You need to install adb from the sdk, and run it from that folder, else windows can't know what program you are trying to use, unless you add it to $PATH.
I use adb all the time, and have tried millions of driver versions without issue.

Thanks for the reply.
I didn't use ADB; no idea how to use that.
I managed to get it working after some struggle and what worked was:
- Install HTC Sync. That will install the correct drivers
- Install HTC RUU from the official site
It was many trial and error times but in the end it worked.
Thanks again!
i have same problem. i want back my official soft with now root, but when i tried it with HTC RUU i get error (something about please check the phone has correctly connected on computer) so i don't know where's the problem. And one question more: when i plug my phone with usb cable to computer then which mode should i use? (charge only, disk drive...)

Try Installing HTC Sync first.
You using Windows 7 right? I think it's a Windows problem that install wrong drivers. HTC Sync will fix that.
Then you can try again.
The usb you just plug and you're done, no need to set a mode. You should get a (sound) notification that it's plugged.
My major issue with this is the need for a win machine. Everything would be much better if I could just do it in linux.
My phone was sent to repair now You also got trouble with the Hero keyboard?
nope, but the gps is dead. I try to repair it by warranty. But at the moment i have froyo rom with root and as you all knows ROOT=NO WARRANTY :S
Hey, I've tried various methods of rooting my GSM Hero, and eventually found the method on this site entitled "VillainROM Roots 2.1 RUU for GSM Hero (Confirmed)". I got as far as trying to run runindos.bat, and this just returns the error as explained. If I run "adb devices" I get "List of devices attatched" and then just nothing after it. Strange.
Does it have anything to do with the fact that HTC Sync never picks up my phone?

adb, drivers or usb debugging, check it

USB Debugging is enabled, not sure how to check adb but what's the correct way to install the drivers? Is it by running the "SDK Manager" program in my SDK folder?
Moved to Q&A as not development.
Get the drivers via the sdk manager, and manually install them via device manager for the device.
Ahh, sorry about the wrong section. I assumed that Development would be things concerning roots.
SDK Manager only seems to let me install "SDK Platform Android X.X", I don't see any driver installations. Also, I'm not sure where it installs these to.
Edit:
Okay I tried to install "USB Driver" but Windows said that it was already up to date. Still not appearing in adb :/.
Hmmm. Search for drivers in dev forum, as I think I posted mine (or instructions to hack them) on one of the Froyd villain threads somewhere.
Also, I presume you have rebooted and tried adb right after reboot
Drivers for you
Thanks to you both, I'll try those later on today.
I'd rebooted both the PC and the phone and tried it. Nothing unfortunately. It just seems to be a big Windows 7 problem.
I use Win 7 without any problems.
Check out this epic guide by BTDAG,...

Good news and bad news. The drivers are now working, adb is working and runindos.bat is doing it's thing. Unfortunately, when it reboots the second time for recovery, there's just a red triangle with an exclamation mark in it.
I rebooted and got back to where I was, but how do I get the "Care Bear" boot screen? Am I supposed to have moved RA-Hero to my phone first or do I not need anything?
Thanks.
Hi Craig. I had to repeat process 4-5 times before it worked so make sure you have your new rom on SD for when it works. I had all same probs but it will get there. As pulser said on villain try changing directory to avoid echo. It seems to load a little more each time.
Sent from my living room.
Hmm, if the recovery thing with the phone in the background comes up, and has "apply:update.zip" as a selection, should I try that? I've tried a few times and that's usually what comes up, along with reboot phone and another couple of selections.
I've got it! Thanks very much for everything. I just kept doing it and it's working now. I got FroydVillain and I'm loving it! I never realized the Hero could be so smooth.
Also sorry for the double post, I'm used to auto-merging on formus.
Happy Holidays Everyone!!!
Phone:
Tmobile T959 aka Samsung Vibrant
It is on stock Froyo 2.2
It has the 3E recovery.
I tried on 2 computers but I can NOT connect via USB it gives me USB malfunction error. The phone does charge. I can put it into download mode vie the 3 finger trick. When you connect it does give you the option to click the green Android icon Connect to USB. So it is talking to the computer, the usb is not totally dead.
Problem:
I need to root this phone. I can not use 1 click or anything else because I think there is a problem with the USB port. I can get files onto the phone via wifi or using the external sd card.
I tried using the update.zip file BUT because I am on the 3E recovery it will say signature failed. I can not run the install.bat to get it back to 2E recovery. I can not use ODIN because the Windows will not detect the phone properly.
What workaround can I use to root this phone? How would I use terminal on the phone?
HOW WOULD YOU ROOT THE PHONE IF YOUR USB PORT WAS "broken"?
THANKS for helping!
As far as I'm aware, you can't root your phone without the USB port working as most (if not all) root methods send their commands and files through ADB. Your pretty much stuck, unless your phone is under warranty. In that case, just go to your carrier and see if they'll give you a replacement device.

I think there may be a way to do it via terminal emulator on the phone.
If this is possible, can someone please post how to do it.
anyone with a work around?
damn!
Am I stuck or does anyone have a way for me to root this phone without the using the USB connection (USB does charge, It will know when you connect to the pc for USB storage BUT windows will say not recognized. I tried it on 4 other pc's same results. I think something is wrong with the OS of the phone. I think the previous owner tried to update with Kies and it messed up the phone. The phone does boot and works.

How do I root this phone WITHOUT the USB port?
There has to be a way!
Can you determinate VID&PID of phone?
I can get into the device with airdroid and see the system files.
Which files do I need (or which apps) and where do I copy them manually to get it rooted?

Is there not a device forum where you might could get some better information? My thinking is, a lot of the people (or most of the people) who may know some workarounds can probably help, but they don't check this section very often or at all.
Even if there's not a section for that model, I'm thinking there's probably one quite similar. Also a lot of times, a big portion of the userbase of one phone, will migrate to the same model when they upgrade.
Just throwing out some ideas in case that's helpful. My only advice on the problem itself is that I would look further into the driver issue. I've helped several people with very similar issues that we finally were able to correct.
Have you tried to ADB the device just to pull the serial? With USB debugging enabled. Have you installed the SDK and tried the naked drivers? There's some things to pursue possibly so you can have more information for the person who helps you get things straightened out.
Is anybody else having problems with usb debugging mode not working? I have been trying to root with CASUAL all afternoon and I can NOT get usb debugging mode / adb mode to work. Any suggestions on what I could do to make it work?
Thanks guys/girls.

It's absolutely crazy isn't it? Please let me know if you figure out the problem. I don't consider myself a noob about rooting/romming/etc but this is making me feel like i just started today!
EDIT:::: I finnally got my phone to connect to my moms laptop but it still wont connect to mine. I got CASUAL to recognize the phone but I'm kind of scared to do it now since my first phone connected perfect the first time and when I started having other problems and needed to send it back and usb debugging WOULD NOT work. I don't want to leave it stock but I don't want to go through what I went through with the first phone again
Ok, I finally got my phone rooted, unlocked using casual. I had to use my moms laptop ( hp, windows 7, 32 bit ) to unlock it, our desktop ( windows xp 32 bit ) to use odin and my laptop to transfer music, vidoes, etc..... Now i absolutely hate installing drivers and windows in general. You would think being 1 of the top-of-line smartphones, **** like this wouldn't be so difficult.
It seems this is a driver issue.. I still couldn't get it to work. I'm guessing that either the old GNex drivers or maybe a windows driver. I recall having a similar issue with another device and I had to go through device manager and remove certain drivers and install others.. That doesn't explain the failure I had with linux thought.. perhaps my adb is out of date??
After updating adb removing/installing various drivers in an old XP install was able to get the phone to be recognized by CASUAL, but casual would would reboot the phone to a "Downloading" recovery screen, and just hang.. CASUAL seemed to be waiting for this screen, but could'nt tell that it had it ???

Yep that's the same thing that happened on my windows xp based desktop, it would boot into download mode but it wouldn't recognize the phone. It's got to be a driver related issue though. I had similar issues with my gnex but that was nothing compared to this catastrophe.

I finally got mine done.. gave up on windows drivers and went back to linux.
I had to switch to a disto that used gksudo & dpkg in order for the CASUAL app to work properly (..my distro of choice is PCLinuxOS, but it doesn't use gksudo or dpkg).
Hello guys, im really in trouble. I have a general mobile e tab 5 tablet and i'm living some problems. This tablet don't have an microsd card so i can't setup anything from microsd. Don't have an os and when i connect to computer it's not being visible. I setup sdk android tools, fastboot or smth. This didn't work too. I'm updated the java things and it's still not working. I can't wiping datas, it's giving error like "failed to mount '/cache' and '/data' (invalid arguments), Unable to mount storage" and i can't doing any little thing. Im totally stucked, no way, im thinking only i can fix it from terminal but i don't know what i should to write I don't know what i should to do. Really i need help guys. Also ADB sideload not working too as i said, it's not being visible on computer. (Sorry for bad English.)

You may need to install/reinstall usb drivers for ADB?

I did everything, i deleted every usb drivers and setup again. At the same time i deleted from device manager every usb port and i setup again all of them. It's not detectable. In twrp MTP enabled and im opening adb sideload.
Just judging from the image you provided, it looks like your drivers are not installed properly. There are a few different drivers you can try, googles, Universal Naked Driver, Motorola, etc. I would suggest trying a different route than the one you took already. Your device is not being recognized, it must be related to the adb USB drivers.
