We may (hopefully) see something done with the hardware of this phone in time for its launch.
Let's think about this:
-Sprint supposedly booked however many hours to their presentation at CTIA, but it really only lasted like 20 minutes?
-Sprint barely showed off the EVO 3D at their own presentation.
-It was shared with a bootleg tablet, the EVO View 4G.
-Not one mention of price, but availability was speculated to be around the summer, which could mean any month during the Summer timespan and even any month after that. I can recall Sprint's past on release speculation being somewhat inaccurate.
More points to note: (from the 26 minute hands-on video)
-Sprint rep on more than one occasion said the software development was earlier than you'd think.
-Task manager reported 110MB free and ~500MB total RAM. The EVO 3D supposedly has 1GB of RAM. You can see proof of this around the 18:40 mark.
What I think was, according to the 26 minute video that was posted by another member in the oval office thread, the Sprint rep said the software development was "earlier" than you'd think. Could this also mean the hardware was that early as well? Could it mean that this phone was kind of rushed out to meet CTIA when it really wasn't even ready for that?
I think Sprint quickly threw this phone out there, to get a general consensus and reaction from the people and they will take this reaction into consideration when finalizing the EVO 3D hardware. When compared to the GSM version (which was denied by HTC, but later made official), we're losing 3GB of ROM (from 4GB down to 1GB) according to Sprint specs. In fact, there are so many inconsistencies about what the EVO 3D will have, in pure speculation alone and what's posted on the Sprint/HTC websites. We may be working with a number of production units here. Also, in the 26 minute video when the Sprint rep was showing off the task manager, uhh I'm not sure if any of you noticed, but around 18:40, the free memory remaining was around 110 MB and the total memory available was somewhere in the 500MBs and if i'm not mistaken, that's horribly low in comparison to the supposed 1GB of RAM and pretty much on par with the current EVO.
This may be wishful thinking talking, but I don't think it's too far fetched to assume we may have a different phone when launched.
Remember how the original EVO 4G was spotted having a red speaker grill but production unit was changed to silver? Small difference but worth noting.
Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ynmqtopi9g&feature=player_embedded
I would think it would need some sort of built in memory if it is going to be recording 1080p video. That was the issue with the og Evo and 720p, the sd card it shipped with wasnt fast enough to keep up with it unless it was heavily compressed.

first time I've seen this being shown anywhere. Speaking about hte RAM issue at hand shown in the video. Very odd that it had like 553MB shown in the taskmanager yet documents shown state it should have 1GB RAM.
Also the differing specs listedon HTC's site and Sprints site when it comes to ROM as HTC states 1GB while sprint states 4GB. Hopefully sprint is right with specs there.
HTC removed the specifications page from the product page. Maybe that's a sign that it's not final. Maybe they're planning to make improvements and they want to keep it secret until the launch day. Couple of hours ago the specification page was still available, but now there is no link for that at the official page.
What's holding up the device is the software, not hardware. Specs wise, what you see is what you get. Changing hardware now in the game would give you a end of 3Q release. You're going to see more device testers in the wild soon, which is more software related than the other.

True but hardware like the memory size is still very adjustible and given the differing reports for whats inside leaves lots of possibilities. ie sprint said 4GB ROM while HTC showed 1GB and also in the video above it only showed 533MB RAM while both HTC and sprint said there was 1GB on board.
Just very conflicting reports.
freeza, you make a valid point. However, as you suggested, it's likely because the software running on the Evo 3D wasn't ready. Apart from the quantity of RAM for storage, I don't think the hardware will be significantly different from what was announced.
Yes, Sprint should have done more for the press, but they usually come through in the end.
Lol that is weird. If you search for the evo 3d special page you can find it. But if you are on the HTC evo3d overview they took away the specs tab hah so who knows

Every time I see specs with 1gb of rom, it also says it's a GSM phone. When I see 4gb of rom, it says CDMA.
This makes me believe that there is a GSM version of the EVO 3D and the amount of rom will be less then Sprint's version....
Yeah it seems odd we have to wait and see.and about the GSM version I doubt it will be called Evo 3D since I believe Evo OS trademark by HTC and sprint together just like.the Evo view is the flyer, and at the end GSM will get 3D phones just like the desire HD was like an evo update it

sprint has zero to do with the trademark on EVO. HTC submits the paperwork and owns the rights. But its not Just EVO by itself its the full name of the phone "EVO 3D" "EVO 4G' "EVO View"

i am surprised that they are both called the evo 3d though.

Photon 4G was just announced for Sprint: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/09/motorolas-4-3-inch-photon-4g-brings-tegra-2-kickstand-magic-to/
Similar specs to Evo 3d in some areas but some intriguing differences too like Tegra 2 chip and it being a world phone rather than US only and having a kickstand. There is also reference to accessing a larger screen through a doc which I'm wondering if is something like the Atrix's laptop-like doc (which I love as a concept).
Not heard anything good about Blur but then there are a lot of Sense-detractors too. Anybody know if you can turn off Blur and install another launcher on Motorola phones without bootloading?
Yea I don't like the design, Blur or VGA front facing cam. And to think...I was going to get this phone if HTC didn't reverse their decision on locked bootloaders. HA!
Neither one is perfect for me
I really like HTC so I'm getting the 3D but if I had my way I would take the new EVO 3D without all the 3D stuff
I preordered a 3D

Well being that its already been shown that the CPU/GPU combo in the 3D is hands above the combo with tegra 2 in the photon, not even an option for me.
There is one feature that would have me choose the photon over the e3d..... 'free' tethering on the laptop dock.
This would set them apart from att with this device and would be the best offer in the industry. If you are willing to buy the phone and laptop dock, they could let you use it on only the phone's data plan. That is win!
But it won't happen.
Ask yourselves that, if the laptop dock use was free, would you be much more likely to buy it?
Decent phone, nice specs but not for me. Plus who knows when it will release. Sprint announced the 3D in March and we won't get it until the end of June so available sometime in Sept. No thanks, the 3D will do everything I want and I prefer Sense over Blur.
I'll take HTC over Moto..
I think the EVO-3D with Myn's "Warm TwoPointThree" ROM will be the best phone for 2011, besides the quad core Nexus-Three
I was going to skip the E3D for some other Android offering and I think I may have found my next phone. It looks good but I have to get confirmation that the bootloader won't be locked down. The specs look pretty awesome and I can't wait until they hack it to work without a laptop dock.
Awesome.
The main reason I'll get this over the E3D is because it's a world phone.
OP you should copy and paste the specs of the phone in the 1st post so people don't ask spec questions.
Photon has 16gb internal storage vs e3d 4gb. I use internal for apps only so 4gb is enough. The Tegra 2 isn't all its Cracked up to be especially against the newer qualcomm chips.
Photon has international support so that could be important for some.

I think I have decided against the Evo 3D. At this point in time we can expect that the boot loader for the 3D will come encrypted with the possibility of being unlockable at a later time. Motorola has pretty much encrypted everything they have released in the past 6 months except the Xoom. So my initial expectations are that the Photon is also going to come with an encrypted bootloader. Which means I more than likely will not be getting this phone. We know pretty much for certain that the SGS2 will come with an unlockable bootloader. To me the choice is very easy. SGS2 here I come.
Seems similarly specced to the atrix..and no 1080p video recording bio

I just saw this and it seriously made me re-think my decision to get the 3D. I've been looking around for benches pitting the Tegra 2 against the 3rd gen Snapdragon. It also has much more internal memory, I believe the 3D is 4gb. My biggest reservation is that Moto isn't very hacker friendly and, from what I've seen, that isn't likely to change any time soon.
But it has been a while since sprint and MOTO played nice

He might be right in the statement he made. The few 3D's that have been seen around are review samples and are s-off. No one is certain whether the initial batch will be encrypted or not due to the fact they were already manufacturing them when HTC decided not to encrypt the boot loaders. We might have to wait for an OTA to get them un-encrypted, won't know until they release. As for Moto, he is correct, they do their best to lock down everything.

Gizmodo has hardly anything nice to say about the evo 3d....i don't really care I'll be picking mine up on launch day anyway, but I just thought I would share with everyone else.
I noticed that, it's like everyone wants to complain about the 3d being ****ty while turning a blind eye to the raw power that is Evo 3D! You don't have to use 3d people!

The problem is that this is the first 3d phone. They aren't going to rate it that well. You can read the bias in some of the reviews and tell that they're overdoing it.
No the problem is Gizmodo are one of the biggest group of iPhone fanboys. Though I'm sure the newness of 3d isn't going to instantly wow anyone (until its on an iphone and its called innovation)
Very happy EVO 4G owner, but now after all these reviews, for sure waiting on the Sprint Galaxy S2 coming out end of July / early August, then will decide.
One of my beefs with the EVO-3D, is the gimmicky "3D" feature. I can give two ****s about 3D on my phone, would rather have seen HTC spent more development time in making it a thinner phone, while improving other features. And including the Green Hornet in 3D, and Spider Man 3D, who ****ing cares about that bull****, is that truly a selling point ? To who ?
I think HTC and Sprint dropped the ball a little here, they should have just made the EVO-2, and made it super bad ass specs to destroy the Galaxy S2, and should have tossed that "3D" idea in the trash for now.
Proud owner of my EVO 4G, but crying a little on the inside after reading lots of these reviews today.
Its funny how so many people here at xda have stated they could care less about 3D and would buy the phone without those capabilities while at the same time, the 3D feature is a HUGE focus point for reviewers. I could care less about the 3D, it will be fun to play with I'm sure, but its not a major concern for me in my decision to buy or not buy this phone.

The 3d will be neat to mess with and see if development can make it better.. but even with bad reviews, I've never not seen a phone get better then it is at stock out of the box after groups like Cyanogen get their versions of Android on the phone.. I'm not stressing out, I will be waving to T-Mobile next Friday.

Most [H]ardcore geeks I know, don't want the EVO-3D for the "3D", they want is for being more of the EVO-2, or a next gen EVO, with double the spec's as the original and Sense 3.0
I wish reviewers, would look at the EVO-3D that way, step back away from the "3D" aspects of the phone, and just review based on much improved battery life...the cool updated Sense 3.0...and faster hardware with dual cores, more memory and RAM...and the higher res screen...Those updates are very worthy of a high review in my opinion.
The phone is a beast. 3D is cool I'll be happy to have it. 95% of reviews are b.s. buy what u want not what some guy u don't know says.

I just don't understand what spec isn't up to the highest level. I mean Yeh could use more internal memory but not a big deal with apps2sd. Camera its already proven 8,5 or 1.47838 doesn't matter as much as sensor ala iPhone. So people who says shouldn't have focused on 3d what spec would u raised the bar on and no saying quad core don't work tablets aren't even there.

3D is not important to me. I mean, I'll probably use it in the first month or so, but then I'll probably forget about it. That being said, I don't think it would be fair for any reviewer to disregard the 3D, as this phone is going to be the "trendsetter" for the niche. Just like the OG Evo was the trendsetter for large screens and kickstands.
I do believe, however, that the 3D feature should not be given as much weight during these reviews.
They did mention that it's FAST. But 3D hurt guy's eyes. Some people are more sensitive to these things than others. What I am after, is a solid phone and new Sense. (Sorry AOSP crowd, I like my pig with a professional makeup on)
I think all the reviews and people wanting the phone need to ask themselves would you buy this phone if there was no 3d?
I know I would buy it just because of the specs and sense update.... This is a definite upgrade from my og evo
The 3d is just icing on the cake....
And the whole experience of the phone isn't 3d.. Only 3d movies videos and pictures will be in 3d... Your normal day to day use of the phone (text, email, etc) isn't going to be in 3d...
And as someone else pointed out... As soon as an "i" whatever comes with 3d it will then be accepted...

$5 bucks says that if the phone did not have the 3D feature, or the 3D feature was not the headlining feature, it would have had better reviews across the board for all websites that examined the phone.
I understand people don't like the idea of 3D being "crammed" down their throats, but it's not like the phone is more expensive than lets say the Sensation. In fact it's cheaper.
Overall, its a huge spec bump (understatement) compared to the original evo.

Exactly, well said! You remove the 3D which will have limited use I don't care who you are. This thing will be insane. I'm a sense fan, so I'm looking forward to 3.0. Like what you like, but you remove the bloated monkey from this phonethis phone and it's going to be a while before another phone comes out that would be as fast or buttery smooth as this phone would be.
* this post was not intended to start the "Oh yeah the Photon.. Blah blah." Or "Well the GSII.. Blah blah blah"... So please lets not start it I can view that crap on any number of also non related threads around here.
The only one thing I don't get is people only concern themselves over the 3D but when it comes to its power they just say its fast. They even go so far as to say it never lags even slightly. But they all hate on the 3D so to me this phone is awesome to still get a 7/10 or 8/10 cause remove the 3D and those are all 9/10 or 10/10. I do want the 3D because I will have fun with it, but It is not the reason I am buying the EVO. Its the community and the specs and 'I' like the design as well. I just hope it doesn't bother my already F'ed up eyes.
I like how they call it a "Lightning Review" as in, "We don't give two ****s about this unless it says "Apple" on the back, so he's what our 5 min with the device looked like"
I am starting sprint service an i am wondering what phone i should get i have already had the evo an epic an i liked the evo more besides the screen
Now with all the problems with the evo 3d should i get it or maybe the nesux because i didnt really care about 3d its just a battery drannner
So what do you all think?
you will prob get hw003.. if we are to ref the evo 4g .. hw003 had most bugs worked out.
and yes. i would recommend it. i am not looking back at my evo4g one bit. love this phone.
Thanks i really love the feel an look of this phone i just want to make sure its not a over advertised cheap device but i plan on gettin it around the 4th of next month i was wanting to wait a couple of shippments to make sure i get a device that has no problems i loved my evo and i hope to love this phone just as much
once you go Evo you never go back!lol.naw but on a serious note this phone is just like OG evo bigger cooler brother with a few trricks up his sleeve.
The 3d is better than the HERO.
IF you do get it, get a pair of $ .99 reading glasses.
The preceding is the reason that companies "BUY" engineering: so they have products which are downgraded (dpi/pixels p i ?) and features which are legacy to the original specs (1024 dpi).

Why do u need reading glasses
Pull the trigger on the Evo 3D worth the updgrade from the 4G, it's faster and Sense runs great. I agree the whole 3D thing is a fad and almost useless on this phone but after seeing it the geek in me was impressed...I've had it for less than 24 hours but I am already used to the higher resolution....so far no problems.
i would reccomend it
Yes.

3vo. That is all that needs be said.
I would highly recommended it. Best phone I've owned. Top notch !

Haha what? Reading glasses? I think you are alone with that thought... The EVO 3D has of of the best screen resolutions of all phones out there. Definitely recommended. Also it will have some of the best developer support here at xda if you ever want to go the customizing route.

Yes, I would recommend it's amazing.
Yeah, definitely the evo 3d. Run smooth as butter and 3d is amazing, no eyestrain here as long as the content was well made (looking at you, Spidey...) The Green Hornet looks flawless in 3D

Hi 'leggs,' here's why. The default font size, especially in messaging and mail, is just too small for all but 'young eyes!' Sprint forgot many of us paid premium dollar for a large screen with LARGE print (fonts) and icons. There is no font adjustment anywhere on the phone. Nore any app in the Market. I spoke with Sprint 2nd tier tech support and they said there is no cure. I have a new EVO 3D and I'm taking it back mainly for this reason. Eye strain sucks. I want my 4G back.........with Gingerbread. Others may love this phone, but mine is buggy......it freezes often, the camera acquired a green tint, and several navigational arrows in texting and url writing are simply gone. I think the 4G came 'out of the box' on its' first day as a much more usable device.

Absolutely love this phone. Even if u don't use 3D this thing is polished.
Phone is phenomenal! Even the 3D is a blast and way better than I thought it would be. You get used to the viewing angles quick, and if you are constantly under the influence of substances, the 3D is 10x better. Just watch Green Hornet high as a kite, then afterwards, envy the speed of the phone in general. I love this handset!
Highly recommended

Yeah, what Paw Paw said! Although I can deal with the smaller font caused by the higher resolution, I do appreciate the issue since my own vision has always been poor. I've been wearing glasses since I was four and trying to focus on something you can't see well is a pain. I wish we had font control. That and root access would make this the perfect phone.
In the UK it's really this or Sensation in HTC terms and in 3D terms the LG Optimistic 3D & is it better than both of them?
Why doesnt sprint even sell this anymore? Why has no other phone company put 3d on their phones?
It sux that I can only share 3d videos with other evo 3d users. What happened here?
A short answer would be yes, was a mass failure in the business sence.... The LTE was originally gonna be 3d enabled as well but with lackluster sales of our 3d model that plan was nixed quickly. Too many buyers thought that it was nothing more than a gimmick as did myself . I would much rather had a the 8mp cam on the original EVO as it was indeed a far superior cam.

Wow thats what I suspected. So it was more the public really not caring for this 3d fad.
Exactly.....

It more likely had to do with the 3D capabilities not being utilized. I have so few apps that use the 3D features (less that do it correctly). The EVO 3D is a great phone in many aspects, but never received the 1st party and 3rd party support it deserved.

Content drives phone features. Not enough 3D content really killed the concept. Kind of a failure on HTC's part not get developers on board before the launch, IMHO.
Without numerous 3D devices there is no reason for developers to generate 3D content, without 3D content there is no reason for manufacturers to develope 3D devices. Since only two phones (that I can think of) came equipped with 3D screens in the US, there was never a boom of 3D content, and thus, never a reason for other manufacturers to introduce 3D devices.
HTC, LG and perhaps even Sprint should have offered something in the way of 3D content to attract adopters. However, 3D users were left to forge our own path and we never found a suitable use for 3D besides showing our friends a 3D picture and saying, "Isn't that cool!" That just isn't enough to make 3D a needed addition to a smartphone.
That being said, the Evo 3D is still a great phone and compares favorably to many phones being released today. So why did Sprint decide to give it the axe, especially considering the OG Evo lived well on into the life-span of the 3D? I would say LTE has a lot to do with it. With Sprint moving to LTE there was no reason to jeep the 3D on-board with the arrival of the Evo 4G LTE.
Both WiMAX and LTE (or even 3G) were never a problem for me since I don't have them in my area, or will any time soon unless I jump to Verizon, so for now I'll stick with the 3D nobody seems to want, I still think it is a great phone.
I kinda went on for a bit there, huh? lol.

Fantastic post, I completely agree with this. 3D just never really caught on (at least in the US) for a variety of reasons. I'm sad that they sacrificed a better camera for 3D, but what can you do?
I would not call it a failure. It's an epic failure. What a waste of 200 bucks. Oh wait I got it for free.

I got mine for 10 bucks. Otherwise I'd never had bought one. I like everything about the phone, but in my opinion, the 3d part was a waste of development.

I agree as well. I also think that 3D on the unit was pushed without a big "this phone works in 2D just like any other phone" disclaimer. Many of my non-phone-savvy friends had heard of the Evo3D, but thought it was full time 3D. If they would have sold the phone sans 3D, I think it would have had a much better outcome. It was the best phone at the time as far as hardware is concerned.

Also not everybody was able to view 3D comfrotably. Some people had issues with headaches or nausea or simply couldnt find the spot for 3D to work right.
Took me a while to get mine in the right comfort zone..
Im on the eVO LTE but kept my 3D as a back up.
Been waiting for ICS so i can see how much better it will run with that.
I think the device its self is great, but the 3D part never got momentum..

My opinion is. The 3d feature was a failure not the actual phone.
I love my evo 3d its performance is great and the screen is amazing.
when i bought mine for 100 buckets i didn't care much about the 3d feature but more on the performance.
I don't know... I came from a CDMA Hero. For the first few weeks, my 3D felt like the most powerful phone in the world to me. Now, I'm constantly getting annoyed with things. No official support for CM9. None of the custom ROMs really offer what I want (because I want a functional CM9 ROM...) and now the Sense 3.6 ICS ROMs give me trouble with my university's Wifi security, so I can't use Wifi at all on-campus. With Sprint's crappy network and signal penetration, I'm stuck on 1X when I am standing by a window. It's very, very frustrating.
I really wish there weren't 18 months left on my family's contract. I'd love to switch to a GSM provider. I honestly wish I had a GS3 or even a GS2. Used a friend's GS2. I could see tons of stuff running in the notification area and stuff all over the homescreen. It was running like butter. I was seriously jealous. I don't even want to think about how nice a GS3 would be at this point.
My 3D will get me through the next 18 months... but I'm definitely going to recommend my family switches to a better carrier.

W0W :cyclops:
I walked into the Sprint store with a 4G the got run over by a car and there wuz a party. The guest of honor waa 3D - how could I sleeze outa honoring the guest of honor.
Last thing I cared about wuz 3D pics. A camera button - epic.
I luv the phone, sans the gimmic. and yes iTz, I've grown to luv the 3D pics too.
Now ICS without sense 4 iz criminal HTC/Sprint. The phone can handle it and U Oit2us -
Well I for one like my 3D and have no desire to jump ship until the LTE network hits my area (Probally 2025) or a 3D LTE EVO hits the market. I use my 3D and my mhl adapter to play 3D movies onto my 3d tv. I currently have limited 4g access at my Home so until that stops I'm pretty happy

Was just wondering if there are any future 3D android phones in the pipeline? Quite like the look of the SGS III but will really miss the 3D, and there's no way I could get that phone without first selling this one.
So far have found no info of anyone caring enough about 3D to develop a new phone with it. Kinda sucks really, as I feel it looks beautiful in the correct lighting, etc, and 3D videos look really good.
As it is, I can see myself sticking with this phone for a while, but I feel I'll be waiting a long long long time to get a new 3D phone. Don't really want to go down the apple route either if they include it on their next device.
Only if and when iphone comes with 3d features

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone's going to produce a new 3D phone for quite a while. While our phones are great, the 3D stuff just hasn't taken off well enough for manufacturers to invest the money to bring it to a new device. Maybe when 3D TVs and other 3D tech takes off more we'll see a new 3D phone. I have enjoyed the 3D feature on my phone and I'm sitting out this round of new phones, but I may end up jumping ship for the next Nexus phone whenever that comes around.
For me, never again. The 3D is eye candy and a novelty that has kept development stalled due to the 3D stuff. The phone has been out a year and they still are having problems with Cyanogen being ported, all due to the 3D. I didn't get this device for the 3D, I got it for the dual core processor. Don't get me wrong, I love the phone but in the end I'll be looking at non 3D for the next one.

Actually its not cuz the 3d they really could careless cuz its not a dire need feature its cuz 4g now and the sense drivers for 4g the port hasn't been implemented yet cuz there needs to be drastic reverse engineering of them to get it up and running perfectly

I actually use my 3D ALL THE TIME! I have everything in 3D. *Active for tv's all the way. don't do passive!* However, agree that it hasn't hit because not enough people have the technologies yet. *ALL TV'S OVER 42 INCHES THIS YEAR ARE ALL going to be 3D* ALSO HTC MESSED UP! If HTC would have put more time into the development and compatibility with NORMAL USED FORMATS!, then it would have been much better.
HTC should have teamed up with the major TV companies like Sony, Vizio*yes vizio!*, LG, blahblahblah and made apps that could be downloaded on the tv's to transfer videos back and fourth. blhablahblahlahblahba anyway you all get my point.
3D phones will come back if HTC reads my comment. btw, ALL PHONES SHOULD BE ABLE TO DISPLAY IN 3D! then the special 3D phones should allow us to record in 3D. lol

Greetings, I am with you. I love the 3D effect, but I do not see an evolution of the EVO 3D. It hurts, but I will have to wait long for another party mobile 3d band. If Apple makes a phone 3d, I buy the apple mobile, I hope not. jajajajaja : Risa:

I find passive 3d is much more comfortable on the eyes. Have a constant feeling of unease when using active shutter.
