I do not care to use any custom roms at this time, I just want simple root to use titanium backup to freeze some apps and to get free wireless tether, is S-OFF required to just get root? trying to understand this all, all the threads about root seems to be so people can flash custom roms. ex "easy root + s-off", can I just root and leave s-on????

no you must me s-off to use Super User, which is what you'll need to do with Titanium what you want to do.
Thanks, had the same question!

You don't need S-off to have root. The initial root method did not give you s-off, but you still had root access.

no you dont . s-off is for the bootloader for when flashing roms... "S" stands for security mode
I think I rooted my thunderbolt, but how do I run clockwork mod?
thanks for the replies, of course next question is how do I get root access and keep s-on?

You DO need s-off, the first version of root we released was on out dated and buggy firmware, and only provided r/w to /system. Quite frankly, it was utter **** beyond proof it could be done. It was a first day release, the one we did on day 2 was much better and left you at stock version firmware.
S-on will not allow you to have a custom recovery (clockworkmod) or use custom kernels.
Gilgamesh and marcogiudice are technically right, however you won't be happy using the original root method I released.
Jcase, i do not plan on using custom roms or kernals at this time, I just want to stay stock and have root to freeze bloatware and use wireless tether. My only option is to perform full root as instructed on 3/19?
If possible please advise, would like root and not have to reflash to get back to stock.

You could go with original root if you want crappy prerelease firmware that turns your phone into junk

i need help on this i unlocked the bootloader through htc but when i go min to the bootloader it doesnt let me choose anything plz help.
did u root your evo 3d?
idk i thought thats what unlocked bootloader software was
unlocking the bootloader is different. u have to root your evo 3d first, then you can flash roms.
oh ok what did you use to root it
use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192245
He doesnt have to root to flash roms, after he unlocks all he has to do is flash a recovery and then he can flash whatever he wants. But keep in mind since you unlocked with HTC you will have to flash the kernel separately or use the method in this post.

thats true actually haha...but better to be rooted and s-off rather than just s-off.

but if he roots and then flashes a rom, that rom will most likely be rooted already. viperrom is pre rooted. So if he roots, installs recovery and then flashes a rom that rooting he did is just an extra step that doesnt need to get done since when he flashes viper it will get overwritten. If he was staying on the stock rom then he should root it, but pretty much all of the roms have root built in(except the RUU stock roms)

ahhhh i see...sorry bout that. didnt realize that.
Folks,
I'm planning on picking up a Rezound this coming Friday, but before I do I want to make sure that there is reputable root out on this device. I've been reading through the threads and all I see is a temp root. First, which root have people used and recommend? What I think a temp root means is that simply I can root it, but if Verizon sends an OTA - I'll be unrooted again, is that correct? Also, if I root and load a new ROM I'm assuming that becomes a moot point and then I'm permanently rooted.
I know, newbie questions... sorry.
There is no temp root method on a phone that has the ota from the end of January. I'm sure most phones shipping now have this. To permanent root you need to unlock the boot loader on the htcdev website, flash amon ra recovery and then install superuser from the devolper menu in recovery.

There is definitely a permanent root method and a good development community for the rezound. I perm rooted my phone the first week I got it and haven't looked back.

Yes you can go custom Rom immediately. I never did a nandroid backup. Just unlocked bootloader installed amon ra recovery. Flashed Rom after Rom lol
Just make sure to read thoroughly before flashing. If flashing GB roms most will require you to install the kernel and boot image but will basically be automated. Just nerd to hit the power button in bootloader then follow the steps.
If ICS you MAY need to run the ruu leak or run a patch for older firmware.
Sounds difficult but will make more sense when you are performing the flash.
If I accept the ota update from HTC will it mess up my phone or make ne lose root?
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Yes you will lose root and Voodoo Rootkeeper does NOT work. I would wait until new exploits are found to get around this OTA, to get root back.

I am thinking of doing: the HTC Dev Unlock, install twrp recovery and then flash SuperSU to gain root back.
In this state will I be able to accept future OTA updates or will I have to flash back the stock recovery to do that?

You will need to flash a stock recovery. I would first recommend s-off before you do anything. Then you can use this method for any future updates.

I already have installed the OTA. My phone, previous to the OTA, was just rooted, no unlock & stock recovery.
I have an S-Off OG EVO as well as a S-Off EVO 3D.
My EVO lte I would like to keep as stock as possible, but with root. When it is now longer my daily driver, I will be more likely to hack on it. But as my primary phone I want it as easy as possible to stay current with the radios and ROM.
Does twrp have an option restore the stock recovery? Or do I need to download that and flash it via something other than twrp?

Here's what I just did about 15 minutes ago. Was easy as pie. Rooted my stock rom, installed Titanium Backup and backed up what I needed, lazypanda's s-off, flashed TWRP recovery, nandroid back up stock rom, flash to MeanMike's 1.4 rom (built on the new OTA). Maintained root, s-off without HTC knowing squat, got the new OTA with the dev's built in additions, now I'm golden.
Or if in steps you want:
1.) Root: How to Root HTC Evo 4G LTE! [Windows/Mac/Linux]
2.) Backup apps and data you want to keep using Titanium
3.) S-Off: [S-OFF] LazyPanda S-OFF
4.) Recovery: [6/1/12] TWRP 2.1.8 - TeamWinRecoveryProject - now with usb!
5.) Nandroid backup inside TWRP
6.) New Rom: [ROM] Jul-12 MeanROM ICS v1.4 | 1.22.651.3 | 1.5-1.9 Ghz | Mods | Batt saver
6.5) Flash New Firmware: Read down on Mean's thread about flashing firmware.
Profit.

Thanks for the reply, but I have already taken the OTA, so going full S-Off is no longer an option, nor is it my objective at this time.
My objective is to have a Stock Phone able to receive a future OTA update, and have root access.
I am pretty clear on doing the HTC Dev Unlock, installing twrp recovery, & flashing SU from twrp. I'm just a little fuzzy on how to restore stock recovery.

Oh wait!
Does doing the HTC Dev Unlock wipe the phone? I really don't want to have to rebuild my apps and configs without being able to Titanium Backup first!
Is there anyone even working on a software root for the current OTA? I don't mind waiting for a software root. But if one is not coming, then I need to schedule a few hours to go the Dev Unlock route. Redoing my app setup and config will take the most time. Even with the titanium backups from when I got the phone it will still takes hours to get everything back to where I want it to be.
if you into rooting and custom roms and things like that NEVER accept an OTA from sprint. ALWAYS wait for it to be incorporated into a custom ROM. just go to the MEANROM or the stock liquid smooth ROM and get one of them. just a piece of advise.

It's just so unfortunate that having root access to your OS is something that the carriers want to so thoroughly discourage.
Like I have said, since my EVO lte is my daily driver, it must work well everyday, I prefer to keep everything stock. But I also have come to use root access often.
I love to hack on my older phones, when I have the time. But I don't always have the time available to research and implement hacks and mods, so I try to keep away from them on my main phone.
i respect ur decision but my evo is my daily driver and i have unlocked the bootloader, rooted and have s-off and have mean rom installed and its flawless man. i never have any issues like some ppl talk about. and whenever the new viper rom comes out it will be the same way im sure.
I am trying to do the same thing jsonger121.

I use mine as a daily driver, and for my job, it's a business critical aspect. It's easy to find a rom that's stable (Mean Rom), and doesn't "hack" things so much as enhance the capabilities that you already have. That's why I prefer to be completely unlocked, so I can do what I need to do, but still have the flexibility to accomplish the things I'd like to do. I've always thought that if you just want something "so simple, a caveman can do it", you go with something vanilla and boring like apple's products.

With S-ON, you can still do most things, you are just restricted with what you can flash in recovery (radios, kernels, etc). Unfortunately, most roms do not have working sprint hotspot, but wifi tether works just as well. I suggest finding a rom you like and flashing it, as long as you already have a custom recovery installed. Just let me know if you need further clarification on anything and i will elaborate.
Since you're soft rooted go ahead and download goo manager from the android market. From there you can download TWRP Recovery and have goo manager install for you. Simple... If you want S-OFF go here to use LazyPanda S-OFF method (prerequisites are required). Alternatively you can go here for all your EVO 4G LTE resource needs
Cheers

HTC dev unlocked is not a soft root.
Its not S-OFF, but its NOT a soft root.
htckron - You cannot get S-OFF with the 1.15 bootloader. I'm not sure why that was suggested to you.
