Hi XDA pros,
I've been reading this forum for about a week now browsing the different pros and cons of different ROMs and the pitfalls of rooting without checking your versions, etc.
I know that many of you have seen this questions over a hundred times, possibly more but as a "Wooter" expecting my VS G Tab soon, I'll likely be rooting after I familiarize myself with the native software and perform an OTA update.
Here is my unique user perspective, background:
I'm an active duty military officer and a fiction author so I'll be using the device in adverse environments (anywhere from remote regions to aircraft carriers). I'm looking for something I can install SNES/NES emulators, as I love old(ish) school gaming. I will also need to so some writing on the tablet so perhaps a ROM that is friendly to input devices like bluetooth or USB keyboard would be nice (unless I'm using the screen to type).
The ROM will need to be stable as I'll often be months between internet connectivity. There is no wifi on an aircraft carrier or the desert and the military network admins don't allow connecting hardware to their networks for updates/tweaks.
To summarize/add, I'll need a ROM that:
1. Is stable enough to go months between internet connectivity for any maintenance.
2. Is amiable to SNES/NES emulators/roms
3. Is amiable to writing manuscripts/chapters
4. Can play all forms of video and audio media (within reason)
5. Easy to make VOIP calls (Skype or whatever works) for times when I actually find a hotspot
6. Everything else you'll expect from a tablet
Sorry this is so long, I just wanted some input from you all based on a semi-unique customer needs. Not special, just not your average tablet customer. Thank you for your consideration, if there is another similar thread posted by a military person, please feel free to just post a link as a reply and I'll read up there.
Unfortunately I can't answer most of the questions, but a few suggestions:
- I think a mod like VEGAn might be better for SNES emulators, especially with a Wimote (someone else might chime in on that one, I have limited experience but I know TNT Lite has issues with things like Wiimote)
- BT can be a bit wonky on the device, but a USB keyboard should work on most mods.
- Whatever mod you chose, you should probably install clockworkmod .8 bekit version. That way , you can get the device the way you want and then back it up with cwm as a stable baseline. This would be your backout if the device suddenly became problematic and you needed to restore to a working baseline.

VEGAn is the best I have found for playing emulators on. Do yourself a favor and download wiimote controller and get a cheep old first Gen wiimote. It is portable gaming heaven. I just finished legend of Zelda link to the past on my gtab with the wiimote and I felt like a kid again.
I would also suggest investing in a skinomi screen protector and protective backing. It adds grip to the back and the protector will actually heal scratches. If you get a scuff pass a hot hairdryer over it for a few seconds and rub the scratch out with a micro fibre cloth. Best 20ish bucks I have spent on my tab. (I have a toddler, it makes Me less nervous about him being near it.)
As for typing Robeet is on top of it. Most newer than 98 keyboards I have tried work great. The mini Bluetooth keyboards look cool but are very cheaply made and fritz out alot.
I would like to suggest you look into note everything as well. It allows you to type, speek or draw notes right from a widget. Helps me keep track of my thoughts while I'm running around all day.
If you decide on vegan use clemsyns new kernel. It peps up the tab quite a bit.

Oh yeah. As far as stability its great. But always have a contingency. Make a backup as soon as you got all the apps you want and copy that backup onto a thumb drive. Now you will always have everything you want backed up just in case. You can always start from there if something like needing to repartirion 3 months down the road ... actually I would suggest you add that step into your enitial root and rom opperation so you don't have to deal with it later.

I ordered a skinomi screen protector and protective backing from Amazon for 24 bucks, free shipping based on the recommendation in this thread.
No G Tab yet but I'm hopeful for sometime this week. I'm thinking Vegan based on the emulator gaming and Wii mote possibilities. Great input.

I actually dont have a G-tablet yet, but i think roebeet makes the best point. Get it where you want it and back it up. If i were in your shoes, i would even consider a second microsd card as a back up just in case you lose one or it gets corupted some how. That way, if you mess something up or if the rom somehow becomes unstable (not likely) you have something to flash back to.

I've been searching the android market and app-brain for a good note-taking app. I can't find one, so I've started writing one.
The basic problem with most of the ones on the market is that they all are just text input apps.
That makes a lot of sense on a cell-phone, but with the nook an app that was more like a notebook would be much better.
Before I start anymore work on it, though, I thought I would ask if anyone had found a great one. Thanks ahead of time!
there are a few ok options, but definitely not great or notebook like. if you have a good concept, continue it, as none really do the job well enough yet
i use blackink, jorte, and ive been working with a few notepad options, but none are nearly 10/10 quality. 6-7 at best
Check out Springpad in the market. I like it.
I haven't found a good one either. At CES I believe Asus was showing off a note taking app for their android tablet that sounded interesting. Not sure what they called it though. Maybe a search for that could yield some good ideas.

A decent note taking app would convince me to pick up a stylus. I write music and poetry and Evernote is great for keeping track of ideas before I lose them, but it is lacking a stylus option. It would be a good template as far as interface goes.

I'd love to see something more notebook-like, ruled (choice of either horizontal lines or grid), the ability to "flip" pages back and forward... it would be nice to be able to tear-out a "sheet" as well (either discard it, or use it to start a "new" notebook), as well as place "tabs" or "flags" on certain pages.
Anyway, sorry to throw all that out there, just thinking out loud about some of the things I think would nice features. =)
Awesome! I have a HTC branded Dagi coming in this weekend from Amazon and will start fine-tuning the application. I have a griffin stylus, but it's total junk for drawing/writing.
The current version only works in 2.2, but I'll post up the apk when it's at a testing point.
My focus right now is (at least for the first beta) a quick to write app, and a simple UI.

PS - are you planning to allow keyboard input as well, or stylus only?
I'm pretty happy with ColorNote. It is simple and you can put "stickies" on your home screen. It has a plain text notes or checklists.
I use InkPad and share the notes to my Evernote account that way they are all accessible via any device anytime.
I love Genial Writing, it's just like a virtual notebook and compensates for lack of stylus by allowing you to write and then press a button that shrinks your writing and fits it in a line of the notebook. It's hard to explain but using my finger I can make handwritten notes that fit quite a bit of information on one page. Check below for a picture/description.

After doing some testing I think my Nook Color's settings are off. I run the app and the stylus don't maintain a constant "stream" of points. The result is that it feels like your writing with a pen that is almost out of ink.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? I have two different stylus' and both react in a similar way (though the Dagi has better performance)

This app brings back all my notes just by installing and allow it to sync with google.
I have been looking for an app like this for awhile so if you are able to make one I would definitely be willing to beta test and pay for it if you decide to not make it freeware.
Awesome! I'm still working on it. The problem I'm currently dealing with is the touch-screen on the nook color isn't that great. Even when using a stylus (with no screen protector) the continuous drag event is broken up a lot. This makes it feel like your "pen" is running out of ink all the time.
I doubt stylus input will work on the nook. I've tried a few, and they all work like a dream on my iPhone and the iPads at the store, but they are frustrating and inconsistent on the Nook Color.

OP, Perhaps your app can add a "hold" button on the app that connects all points drawn in a complete line.. This will "connect the dots" so to speak instead of the jagged lines your getting..
I wonder if any of the sketching apps behave in this similar manner? Have you tried SBM or other sketching apps to see if this problem translates to all apps?
TL;DR
This is an awesome little machine, and I'm very happy with it. And even though the price is slightly premium for a netbook and there are some issues you should not expect from such a pricey device, it's still definitely worth buying in my opinion. If you think you like the idea of the transformer (as in, a modular keyboard dock) or are impressed by the specs, then you should get it! It's as good as it looks and you won't be let down!
So, I was really looking forward to getting the Prime, as I needed a replacement for my laptop for studies, and I thought that the Prime would be the best investment as a laptop (which doubles as a tablet, sweet). Though, as I was looking around, I saw lots of reviews praising it as the best tablet ever, but on the other hand I saw a lot of complaints on the XDA forum from people who actually own it about what a terrible experience it is. So I just wanted to share what my experience is, and if you're considering getting the Prime (and particularly as a laptop), then this sums up what I think of it and if it's worth getting.
To start with the issues:
I've never even had the chance to test out the GPS, which should not be functioning, as you probably know. I sometimes wish the WiFi signal was stronger, but I don't think it's any worse than the other gadgets I have lying around the house. I just recently started getting the random reboots. Yeah, that's annoying. I think it has to do with the flash player (2/3 times it was with flash in the foreground, and the third time I just opened flash and switched to something else). You know what, I'm not worried because even though it will probably start to bother if it continues, I'm sure updates and fixes will follow.
What I'm really bothered by is some ICS tweaks to make it more keyboard-friendly and more desktop-like instead of phone-like. For example, I'm still looking for a decent browser that can be set to desktop user agents (to show desktop sites instead of mobile sites). Also, multitasking on this thing is awesome, until you have to open two files of the same kind (you need to get two PDF readers if you want to have two PDF files open at once). These too will be fixed with software updates or app updates. Soon people will realize that Android is also a computer OS and not just a phone OS. These software issues have nothing to do with the Prime and will get ironed out as time goes along, and it won't matter if you have the Galaxy Tab or the Prime.
But I should stress that I am in no way regretting getting this thing. This thing is comparable to a netbook in size and a laptop in power, and better than both together in battery life. The whole package is incredible: the looks, the screen, the power, the keyboard dock, the freakin' battery life, everything is just top notch. I literally can't convince you enough how pleased I am with the hardware. You couldn't find a netbook out there that competes with this on any scale - on ANY scale. And you'd have a hard time finding a laptop of this price with this kind of power. Just take a look at Shadowgun on youtube. Then imagine it looking three times better when it's actually in your hands.
I'm using it for studies, and I take notes with Google Docs - which could use some work, but you can bet Google will be updating it to work better on tablets. The best thing I like about this is that I use this as a laptop (which don't get more than several hours if you're frugal), and this one can run for almost two full (and I mean FULL) days without a charge. Before I got it, I had a hard time finding a review focused on the keyboard dock as a central input device (as if to replace a laptop). I'm glad to report, as a student, that it is. I can totally see myself seeing slides and taking notes on this, and never worry about finding a wall outlet. I'm hoping to post a video review on YT for students considering this tablet as a school device. Highly recommended.
All in all, I'm very pleased with this thing. If you're considering the Prime, ask away here if there's anything you're unsure about, I'll try to answer as best I can. But if you're reading this much in to the Prime, you should probably just go ahead and get it.

The complaint about being unable to open more than one document type at a time is a legitimate one, and applies to just about every mobile OS in existence. It really crystallizes why these devices are really good for some things, but in general do NOT replace notebook computers.
As an aside, one mobile OS that fixes this limitation is webOS, which DOES allow multiple instances of a document type to be open at once. Emails, PDFs, Web pages, you name it, all can be opened as separate documents and used as one expects--for example, refer to other email messages when writing a new one, jump back and forth between open Word documents to compare versions, etc. I really do wish that Google would adopt the webOS "cards" multitasking metaphor for Android. It's really too bad that webOS has generally been such a failure, because it really does have some unique strengths.

VERY basic web browsing (email, facebook, xda, etc) and that's it. Don't try to fire up too many youtube videos or you'll get the low memory popup. I'm going to take my lapdock for a weekend wedding trip instead of my laptop in May...I should be ok. Looking forward to possible improvements in the future ICS build .

My main curiosity is what most people use it for, as each person finds different value in different items....
I know what it is for and I'm enjoying using it in my own fashion. The main reason I bought it, so you will know, is because I found it for $50 bucks and it will increase the value of my Atrix 4g as a package, if & and when I go to sell it, should I ever find a phone I like more.
Also,Congrats on your new bicycle as well. I hope it serves you well. Just wait until you take the training wheels off! You'll be REALLY happy.

I bought the lapdock in a deal also, but unfortunately mine is off to Motorola as there was something wrong with it when I received it. I think the lapdock will change somewhat in functionality once Webtop 3.0 becomes available to us. It should have more of a "laptop" functionality at that point I think.
I used it for very little until I installed webtop2sd, and turned it into a very serviceable portable connected computer. I have replaced my current laptop with the lapdock, and have been quite happy using Openoffice, and PDF reader. Professionally, I now have used it in court 3-4 times to hold reference materials (instead of printing volumes of online records), and I do email with it. I have also heard that it is very functional in a remote desktop setting, but aside from testing this, I have not pursued it.
The one issue that I have is installing firefox extensions. My lack of linux knowledge is holding me back, and I would like to be able to read .tif files from within the browser, but as of now cannot. Other than this, I think it is safe to consider this as functional as a regular (lower end) laptop.
Again, I cannot reiterate how much more useful webtop2sd makes this device. Who knows what the ICS update will bring?
Meh, id rather have an actual linux distro than android on a screen: Ubuntu is made for a mouse and keyboard, android, and specifically the apps for it, are made for touchscreens that our lapdocks do not have, so i dont see it translating well.

apologies if this has already been answered i did search and found a few pots but they didn't give me all the information i was hoping for or match my criteria exactly.
Ok so i have a 3 year old son,
his hand to eye coordination is coming along and ever since he's been able to unlock his mothers ipad we cant get him off it.
i have no problem with him using the technology at such a young age in moderation and im sure it can be quite educational with the right apps etc.
however using his mothers ipad is not ideal, its totally open he could accidentally press anything from in app purchases or anything that is available on the internet which is a scary thing.
we came to the conclusion that he needs his own tablet, that we can load with selected app's and he can play etc.
i looked at the tablets designed specifically for kids like the vtech's leapfrogs etc but im not exactly sure they will be the best way forward because they wont really grow with him yes they are probably great for a certain age range but as he gets older it will loose its usefulness.
i need something that's going to be pretty much a disposable price (£30/£60) lets be frank this is probably going to be destroyed on several occasions.
so i want want an android tablet the bigger size the better. I need it to be able to root the device as i want to take advantage fully of titanium back and restore direct to a replacement device if needed.
needs to be able to run sort of childrens apps available i know the can be a broad spectrum but lets just say the average ones (processor / memory consumption wise)
i have seen lots of different softwares to lock the os down, so only use certain apps etc but any other suggestions would be great. or anyone who has made something similar.

I've been trying to get this device how I wanted it to be ever since I beta tested it, but due to life, law school, and marriage, I have been noticeably absent from the dev community lately. For that I apologize.
As I am concluding my legal studies, I have began revisiting some of my old broken-ish but bootable code from my Lollipop build, and am considering, if enough people are still using this thing, to try and build Nougat.
The chipset is identical to the Galaxy Nexus, as I am sure most people know at this point, and wollac has did one helluva job putting in the work to form a solid base to build upon. Admittedly, this is going to be a moderately-difficult project, bordering on a labor of nostalgia, but if there is enough interest, I will get to work so we can keep using this obsolete bowling ball for another year or two. I still use the KitKat build as an amp and NES emulator.
Let me know what you guys think.

+1 on the LED functionality, but I fear that there aren't many in circulation anymore... Mine is gathering dust underneath the TV, a chromecast does its intended functionality much better :/

I'll echo the others... I have mine sitting the corner of my office, under the printer waiting and hoping for it to be usable one day. I unfortunately bought mine right after they pulled the plug, not know about it so it has never actually worked! I really just hope to be able see the LEDs and stream music to it, even if just through chromecast. I heard it had a great amp and I have some old quality speakers laying around somewhere.
I'm interested as well. I'd love to be able to use it as a chromecast audio, or something similar. Personally, I'd prefer to be able to use it without a display.

I would love something newer than the 4.4 build on this forum currently, and get some use out of this dustcollector. Personally i would like to just get the amp working, any other functionality I really dont care too much about.
Anything Lollipop or better would be great. I use the Google ADT-1 with stock Lollipop and really like it. Works fine for me. Maybe Kit Kat could be OK but I'm not sure.
