Nothing. I'm not changing a thing until I see how the merger shakes out. I'll be damned if I'm going to drop a bunch of coin on a phone that might not run on the newer merged system and they shuffle the freqs.

Agreed, depends how the merger goes. Putting that aside I'm liking the lg optimus 2x, so if the t-mo version is good I'll consider that. At this point my vibrant does everything I want it to.

I probably keep them longer than most. I'd say 18-24 months, sooner if I can grab a free or discounted upgrade.
And as far as how likely? Who knows. All I do know is that whatever 'news' leaks out about what or when they plan on doing anything, I don't believe it. I've been burned so many times in the past that I start at the opinion that I'm going to get screwed, and if it turns out to be something positive then that's a bonus. They say it'll be "x" amount of time before they change anything, but I've learned that they are almost always lying to some degree, mainly just to shut us up before they lower the hammer.

True...I wouldn't put anything past AT&T.
I can already hear "We're sorry, your Galaxy S 2 is no longer compatible with our network. Let us replace it with a free Motorola Backflip with a FREE two year contract."
I don't think the merger is going to take place.. They still have to go through some other approvals and I have a feeling it is going to be rejected.. Or maybe its me hoping that I don't lose T-Mobile for crappy AT&T

At&t bands in the sgs 2
Vibrant - Bionix V
Im looking into either the LG G2x or HTC Pyramid or both(family plan). I would consider the Galaxy s2 but i think they will change some things for t-mobile version, since it needs to add the frequency they might want to change some other things on the phone. As for the merger, they will still need to keep the bands the way they are until EVERYONE's t-mobile contract is up, and if they want to change them and upgrade customers phones to At&t phones, they have to be equivalent to the phones we had with t-mobile. Either way, i dont plan on staying with At&t if merger goes through, so if they pull any of that **** i have a right to just cancel with no termination fees and go on to another carrier. Plus i'll have 2 new phones to play with, even though they will more than likely not have any development going on, who knows. If verizon has some good phones, ill switch to that; the 4G LTE is looking pretty good. Sprint's 4G sucks in my area.
Ive been a long time samsung fanboi. in fact ive only owned one non samsung phone in the last 12 years. Im on my 6th sgs and have grown tired of this phone. t mobile owes me an upgrade so I was thinking about the g2X or the optimus 3d as a stopgap phone untill the sgsII comes out

the international SGS2 (which is not released yet) will run on ATT, so if you have no problem with ATT, that would be a nice phone to get
im gonna buy the galaxy S2, cant wait
Uggghh, why can't manufacturers just cut us a break and make pentaband 3G phones? I'd pay a few bucks extra.
I can't for the SGS2 to drop!! already saving up

dont know if/when its coming to verizon is true and dont care. With root access, the rate of android development and the amount of devices to choose from I have no desire to leave android. Much more likely to leave verizon than android lol. I mean really I dont understand why anyone who wants an iphone doesn't just use AT&T and have one.

I don't get a signal from at&t at home, so that's why I stayed with Verizon Wireless and changed from (crappy) WM to Android.
I'm glad that VZW is getting the iPhone - more competition is always good for everybody, and they are damned good smartphones. I'm a bit tempted, but I've grown fond of Android, I've used Gmail and Google Calendar for a long time, I vastly prefer Android's notifications to iOS's, and I have a Touch 4G anyway, so I can get anything I need from iOS with that.
My new every 2 comes in August, and by then there will be a new iPhone, and likely new Android phones as well. So long as my Eris lasts that long, I'm thinking that waiting until after the iPhone 5G comes out is the smartest thing for me (whether I choose that or Android) in the long run.
Good post, thanks!
I know I personally am tempted to use the iPhone only because it's still so absolutely supported. When a company says "we've gone mobile" they usually mean they have an iPhone app... and if I'm lucky I'll get an android app a month or more later.
This can be seen with netflix. I love the idea of netflix on a phone, but android doesn't have it. Why? Simply because netflix hasn't gotten around to it.
When you're on the iPhone you have the satisfaction of knowing that you're a "priority customer" for companies.
The fact is I still won't go with the iPhone because I enjoy the Android OS far too much. I personally think it is flawed to the core in some areas, but then again so is iOS so I'm not complaining.
I'll be jumping ship to the iPhone. Don't get me wrong... I love my Eris and it's been good to me, especially with the good community here at XDA.
I've always wanted an iPhone and it'll go good with my iPad! Can't wait for it on VZW!
I plan on ditching my Eris here soon hopefully, but it will not be for an iPhone. I have bought into the Android ecosystem with apps for my phone, and my tablet. I'm however very interested in the Droid Bionic that was announced at CES.

My #1 reason for jumping ship...
I am tired of my sister, brother, brother-in-law coming to me and saying hey check out this cool new app/game.....do you have it on Android yet?
Me: No.... and they don't mention any development for Android on their site.
i think that the android community as a whole is going to suffer greatly from the arrival of iphone. the vast majority of android users dont root their phones, and have not been able to utilize android in the same way that we have. the ones that purchased their android when it first came to verizon and didnt root, are stuck with an unsupported phone. iphone is really appealing to the average user. i see many people ditching google to go with apple.
i dont plan on changing any time soon to the iphone simply because it will not be 4G, doesnt have the customization aspects that android does with root and whatnot, and in june they will have the iphone 5 coming out. its a little suspect that verizon is coming out with the iphone 4, 6 months before the new iphone is slated to come out. i see a lot of hardware/software issues arising due to the fact verizon is trying to push this out as fast as they can to cash in on the people that buy it mid contract. it also helps that they are changing their upgrade policies right before this phone comes out to try to entice people to upgrade now
/rant
This may be a bit off topic, but I'm really dissapointed in the direction verizon is going as far as the upgrade/NE2 goes. Honestly I'm going to be changing carriers next year when my contract is up. I just hope other carriers don't follow big reds direction.
Also, I'm not looking forward to 4g. They are going to charge out the butt for it and cap data usage. Doesn't sound fun to me... of course I'm sure most if not all carriers are going to do the same

Forget Sprint and T-Mobile - they are smaller, so will always be more aggressive. Does AT&T do anything like this? I remember last year when the iPhone 4 came out they made a big deal about the fact that anybody whose contract was due in 2010 was eligible for an early upgrade to the 4, but that was only the iPhone 4 and was, at best, 6 months early. Verizon sets theirs at 2 months early for one year contracts and 4 months early for two year contracts for everybody with this (rumored) policy change.
Honestly, I don't know what AT&T does, but I thought that Verizon was always better about this?

Evidence? At this point it's just a guess. If we base our guess on the data plans for modems, you may be surprised. In the past, 3G modems were capped at 5 GB and priced $60 per month (while smartphone data plans were unlimited and priced at $30 a month). 4G data plans for modems are $50 a month for 5 GB and $80 a month for 10 GB. I'm not sure that I would call that "charging out the butt".
We do know what Sprint does for 4G smartphones - they do not cap and surcharge $10 more per month, right? It seems reasonable that VZW will do something similar, or at least not out of that neighborhood.
I for one will be getting one as soon as they're available. Why? Well, I have three lines and the third is up for upgrade at any time. My primary line is up for upgrade in October this year so if I don't like the iPhone I can always go back to Android.
Another reason is that it's a damn sexy phone, no matter what people may say about it.
Eventually they'll have Android running on the iPhone 4, (it's already sort of working on the 3GS) so I could always have the looks and the OS that I've grown to like. I won't switch to AT&T simply for the reason that I get a 20% business discount on Verizon and I've been with Verizon since before the iPhone was introduced. I've waited this long for it, I've been wanting one since it came out, so I'll at least have to buy one to see how it compares to my Eris. (And Android in general) I have an iPod Touch so I'm familiar with iOS, so I'm not too worried about that.
Besides, everything else in the house is Apple, might as well have the dang phone too!
Didnt read through all posts, but iPhone 4 comes to Verizon 02/11/11 @ 12:00am. IPhone 5 is rumored to arrive at Verizon in July, with a new body and possibly LTE. But as stated, it is rumored. I'm adding s line to have both android and apple OS.

Since i have recently ditched all my Apple stuff, know way. I'm thinking Droid Bionic, unless HTC breaks out a dual-core with 1 gb of ram... I'm counting the days until my July upgrade date!
I'm not jumping because I personally think that Android in a few years will kill the iPhone, iPhone's been around a while and you know how things go... electronics last 5-6 years (estimate), then die out completely to a competitor. So, iPhone has had it's time, and Android is going to overtake Apple. Second of all, it's GOOGLE GODDAMNIT!
P.S. There's 26 Letters in the Alphabet, we're only on 6.
to jump ship when AT&T takes over? I know I don't want to stay, looking to find out about cancelling the contract once the deal goes through (fingers crossed it won't)....
I don't remember exactly, but I remember hearing Cingular customers were pretty much treated like dirt when AT&T took them over, so I'm definitely looking at alternatives. Problem is that I don't think I can ever go back to CDMA... so I may be stuck with AT&T... argh! This sucks!

Uhm, this is about carriers not phones.
Unless if your going to Verizon.. then you can just swap sim cards after unlocking...
I'm more concerned about carriers, service and cost. I don't want to go backwards to CDMA, but Verizon speeds are proven to be better than AT&T in large markets, their customer service is known to be substandard, and they're heavy into data caps from what I've read. Doesn't look good in any case. I thought the government broke them up years ago to prevent this exact kind of things from happening. What happened to competition. I've come to love Magenta for the things that the others aren't, out of the box, price competitive and excellent with customer service. Gotta start thinking though about the future.....
I'm a little concerned about this...
T-Mobile gets crap coverage where I am (EDGE Network only) until I get over to the big city (about 30 miles east) and then I jump straight to 4G. AT&T gets better service, but once my contract is up I'll have to start paying AT&T rates, correct? That's my only real concern. The whole reason I went T-Mobile was because they had the cheapest rates for data...
Guess I'll just have to go back to CDMA when my contract expires...sigh...

Suggestions?
I've looked at Clove, MobileCityOnline, and HandTec. Am I missing anyone? Anyone worth a few extra bucks?

piggy backing on the USA thread, hope the OP does not mind
AT&T still has to release Samsung Infuse, there is no date even for that. They usually announce release dates 2 weeks in advance - is this correct? So Infuse is hitting the market closer to end of April or even later.
Then they would release SGS2 within 2 months or at the latest mid July, a year anniversary of SGS1? What sense does it make for AT&T to have two confusingly similar (to J6p) phones released so close to each other? Why would they infuse stock with the Infuse and make it difficult to captivate shelf space for the Captivate 2 a month or two later?
I am writing all this because I am suspecting Infuse would become SGS2, OR SGS2 will be pushed back to end of summer. Possible?

I've been thinking along similar lines. I really dont know what purpose the Infuse would serve for them if they also have the SGS2.
I've been wondering if the Infuse 4G is actually AT&T's version of the Galaxy S II. Why else would they be so coy about not letting anyone touch it or interact with it at CES...then keep it behind glass under lock and key at CTIA.
Having said that -- I don't want AT&T's gimped version of the GSII, unless the price is REALLY right!
</ConspiracyTheory>
If it is at&t's version of the sgs2 it needs to come with some upgrades to what it's listed as now (processor, gingerbread). I don't really care about NFC though.

It very well could be although I doubt they will deviate away from the 4.3 in Screen.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i997_infuse_4g-3705.php
the Infuse is a single core A8 1.2 Ghz processor while we know that the SGS II will have a dual core. That is what the BIG-BANG from Samsung was all about... The screen and the processor.
The infuse to me seems just a likely indication that it will be a while before you see SGSII released on AT&T. Same situation with Verizon and the Droid Charge due out any day now. Even if they do not localize versions of the SGSII like they did with SGS (And God I hope they don't, those alterations largely were just annoying), release across carriers won't be simultaneous.
So does that mean we can guess what order they will hit based on recent releases or lack thereof? If using that logic, Sprint-->T-mobile--> Verizon/AT&T
Sad for me as I'm on Verizon and want to get a 4G phone before unlimited dies...it's not looking likely I'll be able to wait for SGSII

It would be pretty mad to get such a phone and live with the dreaded "E" when not around wifi.
That said, a co-worker has a T-Mobile Nexus One on AT&T and he gets by, but as many of you may know, Big Blue's flavor is hard to come by.
I do suspect the stateside SGSII, no matter the carrier, is going to be closer to $500USD instead of the $700+ you'd pay for importing.
I'm going to hold out for a TMOUS version and pay full price.

No, you aren't crazy. I'm on TMOUS, and I've decided that this WILL be my next phone. I've been living with the G1 since it's inception, it's time for me to upgrade.
I'm a little worried about a TMO version, because I don't want them to screw with the S II. Ya know, start omitting features and changing the design and all that, it looks PERFECT. I can't wait until it's officially announced for our carrier. But if it isn't, I might just be like you and live on E with this awesome phone.
I tried out the g2x–or actually two of them–but after some issues Ive decided to grab the sg2s instead. Just knowing its out there somewhere makes me sweat a little. I think I could get by with just edge, but I dont want to take the chance seeing as it will prob be a bit cheaper in the states after the official announcement. Hope the time goes by fast, I dont want to wait forever for this thing. BTW-att is holding some sort of event soon, i was reading about on all the blogs today. Hopefully its for gs2, i guess that would mean the other carriers wouldnt be far behind.
Damn it looks sweet. Never would have thought I would be interested in a galaxy after the updating issues here in the states with the og galaxy, but Im just going to root it anyway. Hopefully there will be some good dev support for this.

Right, the s2 is the best looking phone available. I think when I get paid im pulling the trigger, and if a "3G/4G" version becomes available that will work on tmobile bands and then just flip it on ebay. Living with edge when Im used to hspa+ on the GS4G is gonna suck ROYALLY though.

good. I was thinking of trying the g2x but honestly not having an amoled display would kill me. and the only reason I dont want to switch to at&t is because the prices stink. plus I have a huge deposit with them
I'm in a weird situation. I'm on tmobile right now and I'm very happy with it but I'm moving to bloomington, Indiana and apparently tmobile reception is horrible there. So I might have to switch to AT&T but the problem is I can't afford it! So I don't know if I should get SGS2 now or wait for tmobile version.
If T-Mobile does mess with the US release, I could see using it on EDGE, but I think it's a compromise I'd soon regret.
So TMo has the Samsung Vibrant and the Galaxy S 4G. What would they call the Galaxy S II?
Galaxy II 4G? Vibrant II? GS2?

HTC has confirmed updates to jellybean for HTC phones... on Rodgers, T-Mobile, and AT&T.
This can be taken two ways:
1) No vzw phones are receive it, meaning that the Incredible 4G LTE won't be receiving it too, or
2) They have yet to say about Verizon phones updates.
This is should not be taken as final word since, well, the have actually said. Also, this isn't a very different upgrade, meaning it is similar to Ics and is not as big of an update as gb->ics. Also, this is only our first major update, when phones like the Incredible 2 is receiving ics.

If this becomes a flame war or an off topic thread, I will shut it down.
Probably that's just the first wave because no way in hell will they not update that Dinc 4G... .anyway the Rezound has yet to get ICS so I doubt we will see any JB anytime before a year from now
Aaaaannd first!

That's what I thinking but idk if the rezound would get the update this decade, as shown by ics...

I would base the assumption on the T-Bolt getting ICS. It's supposed to, so I would think if it does, we'd get JB sometime next year (3rd or 4th quaryer if at all).
Unless they boycott VZW...which would be kind of funny.

It is pretty incredible that 4.1 is out, and the Rezound is still officially on 2.3. I would assume, however, that the Rezound will get JB. It's too new not to. This is where HTC is falling apart though--too many models, too many software updates.

problems are more with verizon. HTC has had ICS for the rezound available for awhile now. It seems that verizon is holding it back considering other phones released around that time on other carriers have gotten it.
Once my contract with verizon is done, I'm switching to AT&T
I think we will get it, but what do I know. By the time we do, most of us will probably be fed up and move on. If our devs can get the AOSP stuff fixed up, who cares what HTC/Verizon does at that point though. It's weird how HTC has seemingly fallen. I looked at them as the standard back in my Eris and Inc days. Now I would probably pick most any other manufacturer over them after this phone and the Thunderbolt.

I didn't think you were old enough to have that choice...
I'm not sure what I will do. Still under contract until next summer and by then, there will be more changes. A lot of family is on verizon and I have 4 lines with unlimited data. I will probably stay put until that ends. AT&T would probably be my first choice with sprint being second. Sprint already has lte live most places I go (San Antonio, Dallas). T-mobile sucks inside buildings and I'm guessing sprint lte being on a higher frequency will as well.

I CHOSE verizon for this 2 year contract. I wanted tmobile, so we got a sensation but tmobile has ****ty service where I live. So I ended up getting Rezound for free. I could have gotten AT&T because I could have gotten any phone on sprint verizon or AT&T free but I chose verizon. Next time, I am going to chose AT&T. Just cuz I'm a kid doesn't mean I have no say
AT&T isn't going to be any kind of magic fix. Their policies are pretty reliably in step with Verizon. You'll see similar changes on AT&T within a year. The problem with HTC updating is everything to do with Verizon being assholes about their bloatware being on the phone. Every button that can be, has to have $ for Verizon attached to it. Hence the big delay with the Nexus and the removal of Google Wallet NFC stuff.
As soon as I'm able, I'm going to be looking at some of the prepaid plans. I should be able to cut my monthly by 20-25% over my "Family" plan now.
i would only switch to tmo or sprint and sprint has ****ty service here so that leave tmo...

I'm 14 and pretty much control our plans because I do know so much about phones, carriers, etc. After I told my dad that we are losing our unlimited he agreed and said that we are canceling our contract and going to t-mobile when we can cause we have good coverage where we live.

I'm thinking of crawling back to tmobile.. My first carrier. I liked magenta. Probably get an unlocked most recent Nexus.

I don't know when I was looking at carriers T-Mobile had some pretty ****ty phones. Guess its gotten a little better. I didn't realize that AT&T had upgraded all/any of their HTC handsets to ICS.
all you suckers can easily leave verizon cuz you're getting ripped off as it is...
unfortunately, i can't. my bill is MAD cheap because i've been with them for 15+ years, so i can't go anywhere else because i'll automatically be paying more.
man my parents have been with them for like 11 years and we pay $180 a month
I think unless you buy google's flagship development device like the nexus, you will be behind at least 1 version of android os no matter what carrier you have. It's a distinguishing selling point for new phones that are out. Personally, I think the rezound kicks every phone's ass that verizon sells aside from the GS3, but verizon wants to keep customers renewing their contracts every 18 months. They get nothing from people if they are keeping their old phones that are being continually updated with new software.
Don't know why carriers are so anxious to sell new phones when they loose money on them. Contracts don't keep customers good service and pricing does.
I pay $104 for just my rezound + insurance
