So I really want to use the new leaked gb rom but do occasionally use gps. My solution was to do a nandroid of my current axura and use tyre gb rom as my daily, only go back to axura when I need the gps.
What kind of problemS can I expect from it? Has anyone done this before? any advice or cautionary tales?
Much thanks.
That seems like a pain in the arse. It can take up to ten minutes to restore a nandroid. It seems simpler to just use a rom that has working gps, just my opinion though

+1 agree or just 30 more days and most of the newest roms will have these features...... patience is a virtue......
It is a pain....lol...thats why I'm still using axura's built...but if I were to update, it will have to be with either cyanogen 7 or the gb leak, both without gps...sucks...
I would just wait then, you don't want to swap back and forth just for gps do you?

from my experience, When I flashed to PepperKake (Android 2.2) which is JL5 I did a CW backup of the rom. Then I flashed something like phiremod Vibrant V1 (Android 2.2.1-I9000) which is CategoricallyWorthless Kernel #35 and then use CW to restore The PepperKake The CategoricallyWorthless Kernel #35 still remains after the restore.
I dont know if that GB Kernel would be compatible with that axura rom.
this is where you need to be careful.

Hello folks,
I am some what new to the Android OS, I have a vibrant that has been updated with mini kies to the JI6 2.1 ECLAIR. I am anxious to try out Froyo. I thought I would wait awhile until the Devs could work out some bugs. I think that has happened by now. So I have three questions.
1. what is the most stable custom Froyo based ROM I can flash on my vibrant?
2. Is there a Froyo based ROM that already has mobile AP enabled for the vibrant?
3. Where (if possible) can I download a stock ROM of the vibrant? (Before you tell me to make one, know that mine is not stock, I have installed OCLF, and the JI6 update)
thanks for any help that can be given,

1. [ROM] Obsidian V2 - JK2 Official Froyo Based 2.2 - Team Whiskey - *11/08/10* Very stable for me
2. Yes [ROM] Obsidian V2 - JK2 Official Froyo Based 2.2 - Team Whiskey - *11/08/10* I think most of the Froyo releases have it now.

This is my preference, seems very stable and can be a daily driver. I imagine its going to have an update soon, we'll see. I don't like TW, if you do, perhaps try another version (eugenes or TWs Obsidian).

-- Wait the link was to a "True Stock" 2.1 rom, are you saying that is your current preference over Froyo?
-- Your aversions to TW... is that you don;t like them personally, or you do not like their roms?
^ HAHAA, Sorry, let me clarify:
I LOVE Team Whiskey. I HATE TouchWiz (TW).
The link is to Onyx. It is 2.2 without TW (TouchWiz). It flies on my Vibrant... no FCs, very stable. I imagine they are going to have an update soon but the good news is they are not wiping data now so you can flash R21, then R22 and not lose anything. If/when they release R23 I imagine that too will not wipe data so you can just flash right on top and not lose anything.
LauncherPro is more appealing to me, more customizable and it's faster. There is nothing I like about TW better than LP. I also hate scrolling left to right (I know there is an alt way, but LP is better for me). Look at the downloads/comments for Onyx (no TW) vs. Obsidian (the 2.2 version with touchwiz) and you will see an overwhelming majority prefer no TW.

So I installed bionics Obsidian 2.2 on my vibrant using Clockwork rom manager. Everything went smooth. It installed and booted just great, I really liked what I saw. Only problem I ran into was I had purchased a app before I flashed rom. After flash, it was gone.. not just off the phone but not in the market either. No big deal normally I would just go into market and click Downloads and there it would be. Not this time, cant even find it doing a search. I paid like $14 usd for it so I would like it. But its completely gone. Maybe it wont show it to me because of the new firmware?
Now, it is not there and my first instinct told me to re-flash... So I open clockwork and try and re-install. I locate file on SD.. But, instead of rebooting into clockwork, it reboots like its going to and reboots again but into standard recovery OS mode.
What would be the easiest way for me to re-flash this using a macbook?
Remember reading somewhere that the market installed was the european version so some paid apps would appear. However i can't seem to find the post that originally mentioned this issue. Anyone else remember if obsidian was using the european version of the market?
C to the L-O-T-O-R-I-O, U-S, you just, lay down slow.
If you have clockwork still installed (the answer is yes if you have a team whiskey rom loaded), if you get to the standard pre-loader, recovery mode, just select "reinstall packages..." That should get you into CwR

Regarding apps... don't forget to get Titanium Backup and backup not only all your apps but also their data. I recommend the donated pro version for $5.99 which makes the backup/restore process completely painless and automatic. So after you flash a new rom if something like you describe happens you can just recover your app from your backup.

Inb4flame:
1) Yes, you MUST use ODIN to go to any non-CM7 based ROM (any Samsung based ROM). Not to flash it though.
2) Yes, if you don't need GPS.
1. it depends what rom you are coming from. If you are coming from a non CM rom it is best to odin back to stock then flash CM7. Either way its always good to know how to use odin just in case things go awry
2. I only had cm7 for less then a day, but from everything I have read the only problems are the GPS and while on the phone sometimes you can not hear unless you mute then unmute. There is a trigger redux CM7 rom that has the GPS and mute/unmute fixed but the navigation still does not work as well. GB roms will most likely not be entirely stable until builds are released; however, the majority love CM7 so if you can deal with the minor problems I'm sure you will enjoy it as well. I am probably going to flash the trigger redux CM7 rom tonight so I can post back later and let you know how it is.
Can I flash something like bionix-v 1.3.1 after I flashed CM7? Is there a GPS fix?
you can flash the CM7 trigger redux which has a working GPS. And you would probably be better off odin back to stock then flashing bionix

You *MUST* odin back to jfd to flash *ANYTHING* Samsung based (I.e. anything not CM7/miui based, included in the CM7 list is trigger redux).
And as for gps fix, it's like the Samsung gb based roms, it works gut you have to go through some steps first, and if you want gps, you need to go with trigger redux.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
yes and yes but be very careful when you decide to flash a kernel on cm7 so be sure to keep a backup of everything handy and if you don't know how learn also if you want a working gps install the trigger redux rom
alright, I have a friend with a vibrant and i have rooted her phone so that i could make a NAND for her. i want to flash a rom for her and i have decided on either CM7 or MIUI and i'm leaning more towards MIUI so i was wondering which of the Vibrant MIUIs is the best. I've seen quite a few in the Bible but can't really decipher much of a difference between each of them and even the official MIUI. so any sugestions?
I'm also open to suggestion for any other roms. And if you flash from a Froyo to GB rom, do you have to ODIN bootloaders?
in my experience miui lithium 4 seems to work the best cause battery life is better than most gb roms and is smooth and stable with tons of customization. You don`t really need gb bootloaders (i never flashed them cause if you screw up then your phone will be brickd)
hope that helped

i don`t think there is but don`t take my word for it
I wouldn't mess with bootloaders on your female friends phone without her permission, as that's one of the very few ways you can completely kill a phone.
Anyway, if CM7 and MIUI are your popular choices, fear not. Only ROMs based on i9000 International Galaxy S leaks require Gingerbread bootloaders. MIUI and CM7 are built from the ground up.
Since this phone is going to a girl, I would definitely go with MIUI. The theming available will blow her mind.
There are 4 different MIUI variants for the Vibrant. The stock MIUI for the Vibrant, the stable Revamped SS version, the more experimental Lithium version (same creator as SS. Lithium is the ROM where he tests things), and finally there is the stock MIUI with the Enhancer Mod flashed over it.
If you want the least fuss + features, I recommend using the SS version. All the good tweaks, and very stable.
Thanks for the advice. Is stared out on a Vibrant but never flashed anything custom to it and then i got fthe SGS4G where you need the correct bootloaders to access recovery so i wasnt sure if it was the same for the Vibrant. When i flash MIUI, can i do a CWM data restore or should i just use Titanium Backup, etc. to backup and restore through that?
Sent by Thor from Valhalla using the xda app
When you first flash MIUI, it'll install the stock MIUI kernel which should give you ClockWorkMod 5, with all the toys normally associated with ClockWorkMod. The only catch is that MIUI as well as CM7 will change your file system to yaffs2, so the only way to return to a non MIUI/CM7 ROM is to ODIN back to stock. You can't restore a Froyo backup because the backup uses the wrong file system and you'll get boot loops.
Anyway, to answer your question, yes. You can backup files and apps the same as with any other ROM using Titanium manager or an equivalent program. MIUI even has it's own backup called MIUI backup that is often recommended over Titanium Backup by developers.
Oh, but of course don't restore any system apps you picked up from earlier ROMs. That'll royally screw up MIUI. Just 3rd party apps.
So i just flashed CM7 yesterday and im in love, now i want to move onto kernels to get even more out of the already lightning fast CM7. As far as i can see there is only one CM7 supported kernel? The "1.4 highpro for cm7 old-oc version 3 with proper dhd.ko" I poked around for a while and cant seem to find if this is in the "alpha" stages or if its a stable release yet. Just looking for anyones .02 cents on a good kernel to pair with CM7.
As of right now that is the only kernel that is out for CM. Joker is the Dev that put that out and is suppose to be putting another out that is reworked. I would flash it and see how it is on your phone. My phone is weird, I can get it to boot and run great for about a day or until I reboot then it goes into bootloop

V3 kernel is what i flashed to get OC against the stock CM kernel. its all you have to pick from unless you can build one yourself. Joker is planning and is making more tweaks to his builds and will be updating with more. flashing kernels is a simple and fast thing to do, so moving to his updated ones or rolling back is not a hassle. If you want OC, you will be safe with flashin jokers V3. when he posts new ones, ull boot to recover, wipe dalvik, flash new zip for the kernel, and youll be good to go.
be careful... flashing is an addiction. lol
Stupid question, but if i flash it and get stuck in a bootloop or something happens how do i go back to the stock kernel..? Just create a backup of entire rom in CWM and reflash that if something goes AWOL? And is it just my phone or does it take a long time to make a CWM backup? I made one so far of stock rom and it took literally about an 45 min to an hour or so.. And thanks for quick and useful responses!

What version of CWM are you using? I had that same problem with romracer's previous version, but the latest works great. Unless you include webtop in the backup, and then you may as well go out to eat while you wait.

I am new here, please don't bite.
I have been following the NeoBuddy ICS for a while but haven't jumped in yet. Just picked up a new SD card and want to jump in.
Getting on ICS Passion will be easy with all the great guides. But I am interested in being able to dual boot ICS and 2.2 stock since I require the WiFi Calling while at work. (There is ZERO signal in our building on T-Mobile frequencies)
From what I have read to get back to a stock 2.2 I would have to Odin back, not use Rom Manager? Is this correct? Am I wrong? Am I bothering you?
Thanks for any help.

There is no ability to dual boot the Vibrant (at this time). Going back and forth regularly would be a pain..
Maybe dual booting is the wrong phrasing. Could I backup and restore a 2.2 and a ICS install with Nandroid? And then go back and forth between them?
I am willing to wait for a backup to be restored. I'd rather wait for that than have no ability to receive calls.
I am still trying to grasp the backup and restore process on android phones. This is a hell of a lot to absorb. I am reading as many posts and guides but the underlaying concepts are missing.
Thanks agin.

The recoveries/kernels used are different nandroid doesn't backup kernels. You would end up bricking your phone. To go from ICS back to 2.2 you need to odin back to a stock rom first you can't just flash in CWM. The entire file system is different.

OK I think I got it.
You can flash different ROM's as longs as you are on the same version (2.2, 2.3 ect) and running the same kernel.
But if you want to move between a 2.2 and a 2.3 or a 4.0 you need to go back to stock and go from there.

I'm not 100% sure, but 2.3 might have wifi calling, and as far as my personal experience, you can switch between ICS PASSION and a 2.3 rom as much as you want. I don't know how nandroid backups work though so someone may have to back me up
If you can bounce back and forth with 2.3 and 4.0. Just keep both zips handy. Always format system before flashing. Seems most roms do this auto. Never used nandroid so don't know much on it. Titanium backup pro let's you fast install missing apps without confirming each one. Just don't install with any data.
Also most roms come with a kernel. I'd say find stable 2.3 with wifi calling. I don't know of any quicker way swapping back and forth.

Or because it's aosp he needs to Odin back. I know I've had to coming off of any cm or miui to a Samsung rom. I think I'm understanding what your saying now

Just to call attention to the word "pro" - you do have to pay for this feature. This and the Dropbox sync make pro totally worth the price, but I wanted to point out that it's not free.
Very true thank you and well worth it imo. In the free version you do have to manually click install on every app which gets old fast!
So it seems like moving back and forth between roms is not a problem IF it isn't a Samsung ROM. I'd have to Odin back.
If I used/found a 2.2 or 2.3 ROM which had the WiFi calling ported over to it I could then flip between them (by backing them up and restoring them).

T-Mobile WiFi calling needs the Touchwiz framework. Which is only availible in Samsung roms. 2.3 AOSPish roms (CM7, MIUI) do not have the needed framework.

Probably will end up going the GV and Groove route while at work. Probably set the forwarding before I go inside to work.
