[updated 5/10/11] gTab custom cases REVIEW - G Tablet Accessories

This Thread is for information purposes only.
Please note, I'm sorry that this thread was missing for a few days. Please remember that this thread is STRICTLY for reviews of products that I have had the pleasure to play with and try to keep you informed of accessory options. Should you have any recommendation of products that you would like to see a full review on, feel free to just ask
Here is my attempt of a quick review of all the 'custom cases' floating around. I have four to show and I will be as thorough as possible and will try to answer any questions I can. Please post comments as the developers of these cases are watching closely and will continue to produce what is wanted
I'm making up names (as they might go by something else) to keep it simple for myself and the people on 'my list'.
the 'FUSE'
M2 ('official' Malata Case v2)
BlutO (Bluetooth Folio, thx K J Rad for the name help)
the 'CLIP' (Custom 'shell' type folio)
P1 (Prototype One)
P2 (Prototype Two)
P3 (Prototype Three)
M1 (has been referred to as 'official' Malata Case)
P4 (Prototype Four)
..........
the 'FUSE'
verb (used with object) - to unite or blend into a whole, as if by melting together: The author skillfully fuses these fragments into a cohesive whole.
5/3/11
- PU (synthetic leather / Suede / Velvet / something?)
- Stand / Clasp / Magnetic Closure
- Snug Fit
- Cutouts are PERFECT... USB is NOT covered on the left
- There is a 'flap' at the top above the camera hole that tucks in keeping the TAB covered on all four sides (alleviates the possibility of sliding out)
- can be folded for three different stand angles
- available in Khaki or (light) Black / Gray
Ok, first and foremost I call the the 'FUSE' because is seems to be a combination of the 'M' series and the original p3; with a twist. I can't tell you what the material is but it almost feels like a suede with a 'velvet' type interior (brown chicken brown cow); you can see in the pictures exactly what I mean.
I like this case; I like the feel and I like the look. The black isn't necessarily black as it's more of a gray and the brown looks very professional as well.
The only complaint I have about this case is that while the magnets are hidden (where I like then as opposed to a strap) I wish a stronger magnet was used, however that's my OCD talking.
Enjoy!

M2 (official Malata)
5/3/11
- Same as m1 except the USB cutout
- PU (synthetic leather) / Stand / Magnetic Edges
- Snug Fit
- Cutouts are CORRECT... USB is NOT covered on the left.
- There is a 'flap' at the bottom that tucks in keeping the TAB covered on all four sides (alleviates the possibility of sliding out)
BlutO
3/15/11
- Bluetooth Keyboard Folio
- Leather / Stand / Magnetic Strap Closure
- Nice and tight fit / Left side cover DOES cover the USB
- Keyboard is removable / Rechargeable (cable is supposed to go to USB to charge, dont have one yet)
- Price point is unknown right now (will update when I know something)
I'm not a big keyboard fan but this was kinda cool to play with and review. First impression: when I heard it was coming I thought that it would be big and bulky; it really isn't. As a matter of fact its just about the side of a large DayTimer Organizer when it's closed.
I was told to use the BlueInput software so I already had it downloaded. There is a demo on the market and the full version is about $20. I don't know what (if any) the limitations are on the demo as I haven't use it that long. It literally tokk me all of THREE minutes (if that) to get it up and running. Turn the bluetooth on (tab and keyboard), open the BlueInput app and tell it to sync, once it connected go to your main setting - keyboards -check the BlueInput to make it available... Next time you at an input screen; long-press and select the BlueInput device. That's it!
It seems to work well but I wont lie I didn't type on it too long. I have relatively chunky hands so the size of this keyboard is not really optimal for me.
The quality of the case seems well made. The fact that the keyboard is removable seems to be a plus as it's pretty small, light, and easily portable if you ever just want to take it out. In a rush to get the prototype to me they forgot to include the charging cable so I have no idea how long it will hold a charge OR if you can use it while it's charging. It DOES have an on/off switch to help optimize battery use
As always, I've included some pics... feel free to ask any questions or provide feedback (the designers of this case ARE watching these threads)
Enjoy!

the 'CLIP'
3/9/11
- Should be available in a few days (limited quantity / white only first shipment)
- PU (synthetic leather) / Multi-Angle Stand / 'Clip' Closure
- Nice and tight fit / Left side middle clip DOES cover the USB
- Will be available in Black and White
- Rumored Price $45ish?
My Take - I didn't really know where to start with this case. At first I really could have cared less; it looked neat but it didn't seen functional at all. Then I put my tab in it. WOW, interesting. REALLY snug, actually, I couldn't believe how well the 4 main 'clips' held it in place.
It took me a minute to understand how it folded out to give the three different viewing angles. If you look the bottom 'clips' aren't as large as the ones towards the tops. This is to allow the bottom portion of the tab to break-away to lean out on the grooves to act as a stand. When closed it also 'clips' into place. Pretty interesting how well it's made to hold the shape and stay so snug. The USB is covered on the left but due to the lack of anything else on the case, buttons are easy to access and press.
The other thing that I found VERY interesting (as you can see below) is that you don't have to remove the case to put it on the dock! This is a big deal to me personally.
Dislikes - For a synthetic leather (although seems to be REALLY good quality) I think that a $45 or so price point is a little high; rumor is that's because it's so new and 'should' drop sometime. Personally (just me) I don't care for the White so much however I'm sure some will want it. Black is backordered right now but supposedly in the works.
Overall - I REALLY like the feel and usability of this case. I will be driving it for a bit and will update you if there are any potential issues.
Enjoy!
..........
P4
2/22 - Not as bad as expected, there IS a hole for the camera, the button opening isn't as wide as ideal / top portion will stand out at first but will fit with wear in (leather) updated pic
- Leather / Stand / Clasp w/ Magnet Buttons (buttons don's seem to lay flush but I'd imagine that with it being leather it will get there with time, I've only been using it a couple days)
- Nice and tight fit / Left side open so nothing is covered (I like this as it makes it much easier for me to take the tab out of the case for Dock use)
- Folds back at a stand however at a steep angle (similar to dock angle)
*** this prototype had issues at the manufacturer (not my supplier) and I believe that they did NOT include cutouts for the cam and possible not large enough cutouts for the right side buttons. The one that was provided to me for review was already altered with a utility knife. I am expecting some of these tomorrow and will update this post on EXACTLY what may and may not need work on the user end.
I do like this case. It's one step closer in the right direction. I don't have a price point as of yet but I would imagine a tad more than previous cases as it is leather. I have been using this as my daily driver for the last couple of days and have come to appreciate the look and usability being able to remove it for docking so easily. I'm still not a huge fan of the buttons but the case does look like a 'professional portfolio' when closed.
My ideal case? This case with no clasp, strong magnetic closure, less steep standing angle, and proper cutouts. Again, for an inexpensive as they are and limited availability; I'm at least happy to have options
..........
P1
- Leather / Stand / No Clasp
- as you can see in the pics it's pretty loose around the edges
- Cutouts are perfect for all buttons and slides in from the left so USB is NOT covered (however Tab CAN slide out with the full opening.
..........
P2
3/2 - I have been using this case for a week or so now and after a day of wear in the magnets DO keep it closed just fine and the 'top' portion that I was worried about the bulge has now come to rest. My only complaint is the the 'stand' sits at a very deep angle
- Leather (I think) / Stand / No Clasp / Magnetic Edges
- Snug Fit - Too snug at the top by the camera making it bulge out
- Cutouts are perfect for all buttons and slides in from the left so USB is NOT covered (however Tab CAN slide out with the full opening but doubtful with the tighter fit)
- Magnets don't seem too tight but that could be because of the bulge?
..........
P3
- PU (synthetic leather) / Stand / Clasp / Magnetic Closure
- Snug Fit
- Cutouts are OK... USB is covered on the left and the 'back soft button' is slightly covered. This can be manipulated but when I played with it I could still use the button
- There is a 'flap' at the top above the camera hole that tucks in keeping the TAB covered on all four sides (alleviates the possibility of sliding out)
- can be folded for three different stand angles
..........
M1 (official Malata)
- PU (synthetic leather) / Stand / Magnetic Edges
- Snug Fit
- Cutouts are OK... USB is covered on the left but that's it.
- There is a 'flap' at the bottom that tucks in keeping the TAB covered on all four sides (alleviates the possibility of sliding out)
- Case seem like it will 'rip' around edges soon and that is a concern making it a 'daily driver' for me.
There you go. I hope you enjoy and get an idea that there ARE people working to get us product.
I have already expressed my opinion to my supplier; personally if the M1 was leather I would love that and think all would be well in the world for now the P3 is my daily driver.
By the way, I would like to thank all the members that I have the privilege to deal with in getting products to. In times of trouble you guys have been understanding and a pleasure to deal with and I hope it continues. Also, want to thank the DEV's here for keeping us alive; without you guys we wouldn't be here!

Welcome back buddy ...
Great reviews,

My review of The Clip
I just posted this review over at Steve's site and thought I'd repost it here:
This is the first case I've found that I think rises to the level of what you see available for the iPad. It seems well-constructed and the GTab fits very snugly -- it ain't going anywhere!
The screen angle settings are great. I no longer have to hold it up or lean it against something to watch a movie. Not to mention you can have it sitting on your desk or a table and watch or on the kitchen counter and read recipes.
I got the white, BTW, which I happen to like -- time will tell how it stands up to discoloration, etc. (Note to Steve: I think this would look killer with colored stitching.)
The biggest immediate downside is that one of the clips partially covers the microSD/USB slot, which I was aware of beforehand. This was not a dealbreaker for me, but I can see how it might be for others. I would be curious how secure the case would be if that clip were removed. Or, perhaps, it could be on a spring-loaded/lockable hinge or something. (Edit not in original review: as Steve pointed out to me by email, this is not an issue if you put the GTab in upside down!) Likewise there is no slot for the dock, but I don't use my tablet that way, so it's not an issue for me.
Even with these potential issues, I think it's at least 4.5 stars (which isn't an option). Add in the great communication with Steve and the superfast shipping (~4 days, I think, including a weekend!), and I'm giving it 5 stars.

SSMUG, I thought the clip DID support the dock and could be blocked in without removing from the case. I am guessing you still need to flip out a part of it though. Is that what you mean? like, with it closed you can't dock it but if you flip it open you could dock it?

You can flip the bottom back and throw it on the dock.. I think he means that IF you turn the tab upside down in the clip to have easier access to the USB, then the dock port would be on top
At least I think that's what was meant by that?

Yeah, I'm not sure what I meant either... I must have had a senior moment when I wrote that. I've edited my post. Sorry for any confusion!

Really like that white 'The Clip'. Wish it was real leather tho for that price.
Still might spring for one anyway...especially since you don't have to remove it to dock your gtab.

Thanks a lot for the reviews, it was very informative. My only complaint is to please take a little more time with taking quality photos. I know you're not taking advertising images, but the close ups on areas that you think deserved more attention weren't even in focus.
I can't wait until the 'Clip' ships in black, I'll be buying thanks to your review.

Definitely going to grab one of these...
thinking I would like white, but will take black if they come in first.

Can someone point me to Steve's site?

Thanks for all your input, this really helped me in my search for an ideal case.
What kind of setup do you have on your gtablet? The interface looks awesome. What rom and apps do you use?
Thank you much for your time, I want my tablet to look like yours

smith, we have to be careful not to stray beyond reviewing items in this thread - forum rules - but if you look at the email address in Steve's signature, you should be able to figure out the answer to your question.

Thanks for the reviews Steve...very informative and great pics!
Sorry if this is off topic, but would be interested in finding out what ROM, wallpaper, apps, widgets, etc. you have on your GTab in the M1 photos....really sharp!

Thanks for these great revews! I'm patiently waiting for BlutO.

There is a *rumor* that in the coming weeks there is a new m1 type case with a different material that's supposed to be a cleaner look and thinner. If / when I get any details I will keep you posted.
Of course, I'm doing what I can to get one ASAP to get a review up to see what the buzz is about.
I don't know if it's supposed to be an official Malata case as of yet of what. As soon as I know more I will keep you posted.
Of course (like with the BlutO) it may take weeks before we ever see any stateside, you never know.

I bought this case and screen protector.
I really want a stand though.
Will the clip work with the above case?

Yes, the Skinomi protector you got is very very thin. I have basically the same thing on mine, I just got it from aaron rather than Skinomi, and it fits perfectly.

My take on the M1
I have gotta say, the M1 is a very sexy looking case, the white stitching really makes it stand out. Even though the material is not real leather, its synthetic (PU), the PU is really good quality and the stitching seems to be very good.
large
large
The tablet is held in very well because of the flap on the bottom, but it covers the dock connector. I guess its fine to cover it because only a dock can get to it and you can not dock while the case is on the tablet, but it would be nice for it to be exposed just in-case a dock cable is made.
large
The case seemed to fit the tablet decently well. Hopefully the PU will relax a bit and it will sit a bit better around the bezel, right now the case sticks up a bit around the screen and it will not just sit fully closed (but the slightest bit of force will push it closed).
large
large
The hole for the touch buttons is cut to just the right size, a bit bigger might be nice but it is large enough for easy use.
large
The magnets holding the case closed show a bit on the inside of the case, but its not too bad.
large
The edge seems to be very very well done, unlike the original review seems to suggest. My guess is that they had been heat sealing the edges like they still do around the speaker hole (and other openings in the side of the case) at the time of the original review, now they are folding the PU under and stitching it closed.
large
My guess is that the case would probably not help protect against drop damage at all, mostly because the corners are open.
All in all, I give it a 4/5. Sure it covers the dock and the USB, and yes Its not real leather, but for under $30 its a really nice and pretty case.

Just got my ASUS sleeve - a quick review

Bottom line: I like it. I have a Xoom hard clamshell case and, although it protects the device, it's almost "too hard". This ASUS sleeve is exactly that -- a sleeve. It's light and does what I need it to do -- protect the screen and give me the ability to prop it up.
It is similar to one of the GTAB sleeves, in that the device slips in and there's a fold that you slip between the device and the sleeve to hold it in place. Tiny velcro holds the cover in place, when it's closed (no magnets).
Caveats: No velcro on the back, if you want to hold the item open (easily fixable) and the camera in the back doesn't always fit exactly to the hole - they might have been better off making that hole a little bigger.
I got this at B&H when it was available for about 30 minutes, yesterday.

Looks identical to an opacity case I had. It worked well but I felt it actually had a tendancy to scratch the screen when sliding in and out.

from the pics it looks to me like there is an opening for bottom connector but not for the keyboard dock latches... can you tell us if the Transformer can be docked or is the opening simply to connect the cables for charging etc....
thanks, FredPlex
The opening and fit of the camera really bothers me but thanks for the review though.
+1 The fit of teh camera is awful. Plus I wish it was leather (real or fake) I don't like the soft velvet-like look. Too bad, It's exactly what I need in a case though. I hope someone make something similar that's leather soon.

It's designed as a standalone - there are not openings for the latches, only the USB / charging port.
Agreed on the camera - it's annoying. It does what I need but at $45 (with shipping) I think it's a bit high. $25 would have been more reasonable.
Think maybe attaching a thin strip of something of something to the inside of that flap that folds under might push it up a teensy bit and allow the camera hole to line up?
I cancelled my order after reading this thread. Thanks for the review & pictures.

Yes, that would probably work. probably some double sided tape would do it.
Nothing like a little DIY......
EDIT: the problem is that the device is not 100% snug with that little flap at the bottom. So it moves just a bit and that obstructs the camera slightly. A little tape or velcro there might actually be the best bet.

Same here. This case takes a very nice look device and makes it look pretty ugly, IMO.

I think most cases do that.
Well, the pics were to show you so at least you could make an informed decision. Right now we don't have too many options, unfortunately.
I actually like the design, texture, and benefits of this. The camera hole is minor and not a deal breaker. It looks great closed too.
Just picked up the sleeve and Wintek 16gb class 10 sdhc card from Newegg for $57.99 and free shipping with new member coupon NEWGEEK10 for $10 off $50! Exp. April 29th!

I've had one of these on backorder through Amazon since launch night, but just jumped ship to NewEgg, since they have stock, and Amazon are still projecting May 11th or later.
I am not terribly worried about the rear camera hole, because frankly, when the case is tilted in "stand / easel" mode or whatever you call it, I'm not very likely to be using the rear camera in the first place. It will be aimed at the table about three feet behind my tablet, after all.
For me, the important thing is that the tablet itself is at least reasonably protected when placed in a bag with other items. The stand functionality might be nice to have occasionally for movie watching in a hotel room, or on an airline tray table if there's room, but beyond that I'm not likely to use the tablet in the case a lot...
My case came in today. While the camera hole is a bit misaligned when propped upright, if you actually run the camera app, it doesn't affect the view. Also, the lower position, the one meant for typing, makes a world of difference for that purpose -- I was able to type faster than normal and didn't make a single typo during my testing (at least none that couldn't be autocorrected).
I don't think the case is worth $40, but I wanted something that would prop it up, and a plain sleeve didn't fit the bill. It actually doesn't look half bad in person, especially when it's closed up. Nice tacky material makes it difficult to lose your grip while toting it around. The material on the flap that covers the charging port when closed is pretty thin, so an adventurous type might be able to cut a hole there, but I think I'll leave it be.
My only real complaint is that when it's in the upright position, it wobbles a bit when you press the screen. It would've benefitted from a more rigid material.
Just got mine in today as well.
It does take away from the device's attractiveness, but overall I like it. The low standing position is fantastic for typing on a normal layout keyboard, just have to switch back and forth between thumb keyboard and Android keyboard when you're using it with and without the stand.
I was able to use it today as an alarm clock, propped up in the high standing position, worked great. It's a little expensive, but the improved functionality is worth it.
My only real problem is that it may have been better if it were backwards. When propped in the high standing position (case is aligned with the camera hole in the back and ports on the side), the charger cable goes to the bottom of the tablet. That means that the tablet's weight will be on the charging cable when standing upright, and I worry that this puts unnecessary pressure on the cord. I've had two many charging cords torn from bad angles to be comfortable with this. Considering putting the case on upside down, because I really don't use the back camera or HDMI/mic ports too often.
When used in the low standing position, the charger cable goes into the end facing away from you, this is OK for me, although the short charger doesn't help things.
Other than that, though, I like it.
Do you have access to the charging port to plug it in without having to remove it?
Yes, there is a cutout for the charger, as well as for hdmi and mic ports, camera, and power and volume.

You do have to have the cover flap open though, unless you want to cut a hole where the charger port is (which is do-able, but I don't trust my hole-cutting skills).
Is it just me or does the case look really cheap? Maybe the pictures don't do it justice. It looks like something that could be purchased on eBay or dealextreme for $10. I'll wait for those cases

[Review] Zec Electronics "FolioGuard" (Multi-Angle) case for Asus eeePad Transformer

[Review] Zec Electronics "FolioGuard" (Multi-Angle) case for Asus eeePad Transformer
Introduction:
Its been an exciting couple of months for Asus eeePad Transformer owners. First there was the tablet launch itself, followed quickly by a couple of firmware updates. Then, there was the keyboard dock with its own set of teething problems corrected (largely) by another round of firmware updates. Now, we're all gearing up for the improvements that Honeycomb 3.1 brings us (and by the time you read this, hopefully we'll all be enjoying a smoother UI, re-sizable widgets, better YouTube performance and increased USB device support). Fo' sho', exciting times indeed!
Throughout it all however, the accessories side of things has been the one area where there's been little movement - until now..
To begin with, Asus threw their hat into the ring with the "official" folio case. With a design largely (ahem) "adapted" from Apple's official iPad first gen case, it was a functional but somewhat overpriced solution in many peoples' opinion. In addition, we all quickly discovered that pretty much any neoprene sleeve designed for 10" netbooks would do in a pinch - I myself bought a cheapie from Amazon Uk which certainly does the basics but little else.
In spite of this though, I really missed being able to protect my shiny new toy in a case that offered ergonomics comparable to the lovely "Yoobao Magic Case V4" that I eventually settled on for my IPad.
Yep, I'll admit to being a little worried on first purchasing my Transformer; worried that it wouldn't receive the same level of third-party accessory support as the iPad and that I'd struggle to find a similar case/sleeve that ticked the right boxes for what I wanted in a case. Those "boxes" in no particular order, being:
Adjustable multi-angles for lap/tabletop usage
Hold the tablet securely in the case giving access to all the ports, buttons etc..
Easy access to the tablet to remove it from the case if required.
Sturdy.
Acceptable amount of additional bulk/weight.
I should add at this point, that what was less important for me (though I know it IS a factor for many of you with the Keyboard dock) was the ability to leave the tablet in the case whilst docked.. I've been kicking around some possible ideas on how it could be done and none of them felt that great given the physical constraints of the docking mechanism - we may have to resign ourselves to the fact it may not actually be possible to provide an "elegant" solution; however, being able to get the tablet quickly in and out of its folio case would certainly go some way to mitigating the problem if nothing else.. perhaps worth discussing some other time?
With the arrival of the Zec Electronics Folio Guard range, we're finally starting to see some alternative products emerge that are custom designed for the eeePad Transformer, so let's not waste any more time and get down to business..
So, where are we? Oh yeah, this review takes a look at the new "FolioGuard" Multi-Angle case from Zec Electronics in China. As I understand it, they're producing a range of products and the case I'm reviewing sits in the middle of their price range. After seeing photos of the pre-production samples in a thread here on XDA, it struck me how similar in design their multi-angle case was to the Yoobao Magic Case V4 for the first-gen iPad. Now this is no bad thing, as over the last year I tried out quite a few cases for my iPad and eventually settled on the Yoobao for exactly the reasons highlighted in the Introduction earlier..

During the course of this review, I'll be sharing some thoughts and pics of the Folioguard alongside the IPad in its Yoobao Magic Case, giving my impressions on how the two compare to give you a bit of perspective
Initial Impressions:
On reciving the Folioguard I was pleasantly surprised to find a well made unit, no obvious stitching or other construction faults. Sturdy in all the right places but not "built like a tank" sturdy, like say the Tuff Luv MultiView (and not nearly as bulky either). Compared also to the Yoobao its also a bit slighter/flimsier but not to the point that I could see the Folioguard failing in its protection duties where the Yoobao would've succeeded - this case will protect your Asus baby just fine! The material isn't leather, but a synthetic material (PU) that feels nice to the touch and is quite understated which I happen to prefer.
Design:
Zec Electronics have taken care to ensure that all of the exterior features of the Transformer are fully accessible; which already puts it one up on the official case. There are cut aways for the Docking/Charging port, the two dock fixing points either side, MicroSD, miniHDMI and headphone ports, power and volume buttons, both speaker grilles, front/rear camera and light sensor. All of which are well positioned (although you still can't charge the tablet with the case closed due to the postion and folding direction of the main flap). I can however confirm that in testing both front and rear cameras, neither were obscured by the respective holes - the kind of small detail that shows this case has been put together with a good deal of thought and attention.
In terms of keeping the case on whilst docking the tablet, I'm afraid its not going to happen. In all honesty, any case following a similar design is going to have a difficult if not impossible job accomodating the keyboard dock - as I mentioned above, the tight fit of the dock's swiveling docking area takes no prisoners. Its going to take some creative thinking to make it happen, but for me at least this was by no means a deal breaker and I'll explain why...
Slipping the Transformer into the case was a breeze which was much appreciated (importantly ticking off the "easy access" box - that should result in a lot less frustration for those of us with keyboard docks). On the left hand side theres a flap that pulls out. In pops the tablet and back goes the flap. Simple, job done in a few seconds! The flap will hold the tablet in place if you suspend it on its side (leaving the flap side to the mercy of gravity).. and only after some pretty vigourous shaking was I able to get the Transformer to slip just a little bit - but then who's going to be mad enough to do that deliberately!
There are magnetic fastners in the bezel portion of the case, but they could do with being a little stronger - perhaps this can be addressed in future production runs? In any case, the FolioGuard folds shut neatly enough that you don't notice it too much
For those of you interested in numbers:
Transformer + Folioguard weighs 936g and is 18mm thick
iPad (first gen) + Yoobao Magic Case V4 weighs 992g and is 20mm thick
In Use:
I've said previously that I like the Yoobao's groved flap design for offering multiple angles and the so far at least, the FolioGuard really does it for me.
Using the tablet in any of the three available angles is simple, adjustment was quick and easy and unlike the Yoobao, the FolioGuard stays in its chosen angle despite usage pressure on the screen (this is the one area of the Yoobao I wish they'd improved.. its grooves aren't wide enough, so even remotely heavy handed touch screen use - say, during a game of Infinity Blade - can often result in the tablet unceremoniously popping out of its groove - not so with the FolioGuard which is a GOOD thing!)
During general use I found it very similar to the Magic Case which is awesome. When sofa surfing/lying down its nice that the FolioGuard gives the tablet just enough heft/bulk that you can grip it comfortably in one hand without feeling like you're squeezing it too much (and experiencing the dreaded "creak of doom"). Viewing angles are great for lap or tabletop surfing, watching movies, sharing photos etc.
(iPad in Magic Case - Left.. eeePad in FolioGuard - Right)
However, the lowest angle isn't really that low so extended periods of typing using the onscreen keyboard won't be that easy for most people - which leads me to say that there's one configuration the Yoobao has that I wish the Folioguard had also..
..with the Magic Case, its also possible to fold the main flap back on itself to provide a low profile typing angle - the best way to describe this is to get you to think of the configuration the official Asus/iPad cases offered.. The lack of a fold on the furthest back groove of the FolioGuard is probably what's stopping this from being possible (perhaps due to material/design constraints it wasn't possible without compromising the structural integrity of the case).. Again, NOT a deal breaker because that angle was mostly used by people who wanted to type extensively with the on-screen keyboard - something I and may others would now do with the dock anyway.. Still, another design consideration for "version 2" perhaps?
(Magic Case showing the fold which provides that extra-low viewing/typing angle)
Wrap Up:
So what do I think? Its a good case that certainly does the job for me, ticking most if not all of those boxes I was talking about. Sure, its not made of the highest grade materials and there are a few design considerations mentioned earlier, which may put off people looking for that "perfect" case - but is there such a thing as the "perfect case" ? If its too thin, it won't offer protection... if its too bulky, its not easy to carry.. if its made with high quality/posh materials, it's too expensive and so on and on and...
This isn't going to be a case that quality-wise, could ever compete with the higher end of the market (the hand sitched leather Vaja cases of the world) but then it isn't meant to be.. At this time, given the research I've done for Transformer cases and the many cases I've tried with my iPad - for the price - the FolioGuard can hold its head up high!
Certainly its the best case I've seen available for Asus' new shining star (and bear in mind, that in time although there will be more alternatives, the Transformer is never likely to enjoy the huge range of cases that the iPad does). To finish up, I'm putting up a couple of verdicts here, because price IS also huge consideration for many and with global markets/pricing being what they are..
Verdict (UK Users):
In the UK we're getting asked to hand over £40 for the official Asus case, compared to $40 for our US brethren - which to put it bluntly, stings in areas the sun doesn't shine. There's an alternative case being sold on EBay that from what I've read isn't nearly as good... I think that despite a few considerations (which may or may not be a problem for people), the FolioGuard does everything the official case does and more, for less of your hard earned (especially for XDA members who IIRC can enjoy a bit of a discount). I'm very happy with mine, and as long as you don't mind a bit of a wait getting it shipped from China, I think its a good price for a good product (n.b. you can always, of course, choose to pay extra for expedited shipping).
At the current exchange rate, Brits can expect to pay around £19-£20 including standard shipping for this puppy..(Less any special "XDA member" discount that may be offered, that is)
Verdict (US Users):
The FolioGuard is closer in price to the offical Asus case for you guys, but still cheaper and still - IMHO - a better bet (again, provided you're prepared to wait for shipping)
Verdict (Europe/elsewhere):
I guess its all down to exchange rates and shipping costs, versus the price of the official case and/or any alternatives you may have coming in your territories.
EXTRA
I was also fortunate enough to try out Zec Electronics' Transformer Screen Protector. This one will be brief I like it! Given that applying screen protectors to a tablet sized screen is never easy (dust free environment, getting an even bubble-free application etc.) this one went on remarkably well and overnight most if not all of the few remaining bubbles had worked themselves out.
The screen protector is cut accurately (again with holes for the camera and light sensor), reduces the screen glare, isn't too thin, feels pretty smooth to the touch and I can't discern any real drop in touch sensitivity. In fact it reminds me quite a bit of the Martin Fields screen protectors I like using on my HTC Desire. I know our lovely Transformers come with Gorilla glass, but a little insurance is never a bad thing and the added bonus of reducing the "finger-print magnet" aspect of the screen is much appreciated!
{n.b Special thanks go out to forum member XJarl for his quick and helpful communication in sorting out the review samples!
Looks like it would get the job done, but doesn't exactly hit me with the 'quality' hammer. Thanks for posting the info though. I'm currently in the process of making myself a custom leather case (going very slowly as stitching leather is a right *****). I'll post pics when I'm done. If I end up screwing mine up I might buy this one you suggest.

Thought I had. Sorry.
Indeed you had, my bad
In the forth and fifth picture, does the case really bow up like that at the top near the camera? It doesn't seem to be laying flat against the Transformer.
Nice review well laid out and comprehensive!
Unfortunately it makes my decision all the harder cause this looks reallly nice

It does a little, but the picture I took makes it look worse than it is
As I mentioned in the review, that top bezel bit doesn't seem to obscure either of the cameras - certainly not on my case. Hope this helps
Where can we get the case from?
Thanks
Check out this thread.. there are links in there near the latter pages

BTW, I'm not affiliated with Zec Electronics in any way.. just happened to be in the right place at the right time
So, does it dock to the keyboard *at all*? You say it's difficult, but not definitive.
No, you can't use the TF in the case and dock it..
I said it would be difficult (if not impossible) to design a case along similar lines and have it also work with the keyboard dock.. i'm sure there are designers out there who may come up with alternatives, but this kind of "Folio case" design just isn't the right approach..
That you can get the Transformer in and out of the FolioGuard so easily, means its less of a pain in the butt when it comes to docking - but not ideal, I'll grant you..
HTH
You mention there is no fold on the main flap to allow the case to fold to a typing angle. I wonder what the case is actually made from and if you could carefully bend/fold the main flap to allow this angle?
Thoughts?

pretty much, yep
V.2 developing.
Just brought the case from ebay.
thanks.
Nice review!
I purchased this case from Electronic Crap based on this detailed review...I hope it's a true review and accurately reflects the cases pros/cons. I understand there might be some bias as the reviewer probably received the case for free but it appears to be a fair and realistic review from a "User" perspective.
The reviewer discloses his affliation with the manufacturer but this would not be good if it turns out to be a marketing ploy by the manufacturer of the case.
If this case works out...anyone want to buy my CaseCrown case for the Kindle DX on the cheap?
Hoping for the best...

Seems like a great price. Not sure if it fits the GTablet exactly, but turns out this guy is based like 5min from my house, so I can always return it to him if its not good.
Anyone have any opinions on this?
you could always "ask a question" to get the dimensions. I'd be afraid that it will stick out the sides
Almost definitely not actual leather (I hate deceptive descriptions) and there doesn't seem to be any visible way to actually ATTACH the tablet to the thing. Horrible picture details, and it is highly unlikely a single case could hold (well) a 7/8/10 inch tablet PC like the seller says.
I would pass on that one. Just go to electroniccrap.com or look for listings here for the ones MADE for the G-tablet.

There seem to be 2 clips on the bottom and 1 on the top to hold it. Most cases come with 1 (or 2 ) more clips on the side. Without this there is a chance of the tablet sliding out through the sides. Although once you have side tabs you have to be careful that they dont block the usb port.
Also you *have* to check the dimensions

I've had one of these before. They are really cheap looking and are not leather but a shiny slippery plastic. It is not recommended for use in a professional setting unless you enjoy people laughing at you. There is a thread in this accessories section that covers this case at length. Search for USB keyboard case.
Also, the tablet does not stay firmly in the case and will slip around a lot and may even fall out.
Avoid this case like a dirty diaper.

LOL, you and me have different priorities! I'm not buying this to wow people and I'm really not concerned about people laughing at me. I am concerned about the tablet not fitting tho. Either way, this case would only be for when I wanted a keyboard with me, which is not all the time (otherwise I'd stick to my netbook which is about the same size as the tab+keyboard case).
When I'm going on a trip, plane ride, camping, etc, and this will be the only thing I have access to when traveling light, I like the idea of a keyboard option. But that's another thing to carry, so I'd rather it be built into the case. But the rest of the time, a thinner classier case (like the Kindle DX ones) would be preferable to me, especially to sit and read in portrait orientation.

goodintentions had a video review for his, on that thread but the link does not seem to be working.
I need a keyboard rarely, when I am typing out a big email. It is functional for that purpose. Some minor cons as I see are
1. Even with tabs on 3 sides, it can slip out of the 4th side, so you have to hold it right. Am thinking of adding a Velcro strip on the 4th side.
2. The leather is suspect, and it stunk up my room for a few days after I opened it.
3. It adds quite some weight.
4. Have to reboot the gtablet after connecting the keyboard most times for it to work.
5. The keyboard connects to the big USB, the small USB is covered by the left tab. But I rarely use that when it is in the case.
But it is $25, the USB cable length is fine, and it does have a magnet for the USB cable !!!
I bought one of these cases off ebay, just waiting for it to arrive. I bought one "specifically" made for the gtablet, with the tabs not blocking the usb port. I know I could of had one for less, but would have had to mod the case to fully work with the gtablet. I was actually looking at the one OP posted to save a few bucks, but I didn't like the way the case was designed, with no tabs to hold the tablet in place on the sides.

Sharing my NSTR Case recommendation

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Speck, Barnes & Noble, or Amazon. I do not profit, or gain anything by this recommendation. It's just a personal discovery that made me happy and thought it might be helpful to other NSTR users.
For some reason all the B&N official Nook cases are way thicker and bulkier than they need to be. Also most third-party cases I looked at were faux-leather with huge messy stitching as if they were part of a Frankenstein cosplay competition.
Being super picky about these sorts of things, I put off buying a NSTR case while obsessively trying to find one that was:
1. Slim (All these giants cases defeat the purpose of a tiny portable ereader)
2. Play-through (I can leave it on while using, ie not just a slip-cover I can lose)
3. Protective (Not soft)
Well, I've been looking high and low, reading all the Nook forums with no luck until recently when I finally found this case: (I can't post links yet, so just search on Amazon for "Nook touch fitfolio"
Speck FitFolio for Nook Simple Touch Reader.
I saw it at Target for $29.99, but bought it on Amazon for just over $21. It looks like the price fluctuates a bit (it's $24.83 right now).
I got the black one, I got my wife the teal one. It also comes in purple.
wow, the blue one is really ugly. :-D looks like a lunch box. The grey one is nice.
I am using a cover bought from B&N, it is a bit thicker and larger but at least it protects my nook well from pressure and falls. That cover above seems to slim, I don't belive your nook would survive if it falls e.g. on the corner. Mine did several times.
Can you lock the front side of the cover to the back side (while reading)?
Cases
I use the Silicone skin. It's relay nice and absorbs most of the shock of a drop.

1. I've looked at each and every official B&N cases in detail and found all of them, frankly, to be really lacking in several areas. The Speck case has a much more secure attachment system as well a good shock absorption due to the material and the shape of the case. Also, as I mentioned, it is much more form fitting than any of the B&N cases.
2. Yes, you can lock the front cover to the back while reading.
I should have mine next week!
Based on your recommendation I ordered one, and I should have it next week. I will let you know how it works out.
Edit: I just exchanged my NSTR at B&N a couple of days ago as it had a cluster of stuck pixels. I had no problems, but the employee said that it could have been caused by something being pushed down on that screen at that point. This is why I decided to get a case, as I don't want it to happen again!

Edit: I reviewed the description & it DOES say the bungee is "two-way", so I am assuming it is designed to work that way - it just seemed a bit of a tight stretch. No biggie for me, as I don't think I would be attaching it any - folded back works fine.
Just received mine today. It really has a nice feel, and I think it will protect it well. Thanks for the recommendation!
P.S. The cover DOES fold back upon itself, but I wouldn't say exactly say it "locks" (rather, I would not want to, as it would overstretch the "bungee").
EDIT: I just reviewed the specs, and it does state that the bungee is "two-way" - it just seemed a bit of a tight stretch. No biggie for me, as it works well, simply folded back, and not attached.
So the folded cover is not "fixed" in the folded position? Could you upload more photos?
Mine nook cover is magnetic and therefore folded front & back cover keeps together, moreover when bonded with magnetic clip.
I have bought aluminium case for my NST. It has 3 positions for reading. The NST clips inside so it wont fall out. It has a black padding inside and it seems to be thinner then all those folding leather ones. The disadvantage of this cover is -> when you open the cover and flip it at the back, so it flat ... it's kind of awkward to read it like that, because of the round shape. It just feels
Since this is one of my first posts in this forum, I can't put the LINK for the cover. but if you would go in UK Ebay and type in search : aluminium nook ... you should see it. it cost 12.99GBP.
But now with the "keayboard hack" ... I'm thinking about finding a way how to modify the cover for 10" tablets with keyboard so it can hold the NST. That's what kepps my mind busy at the moment.
I agree completely with the Speck case. I too do not see the need for B&N making such large covers for such a small device. The Speck cover is just barely bigger than the nook and is comfortable to hold with the cover folded back and secured. The nook snaps in and out of the cover very easily. If you fold the cover back and secure it, it stays level and has enough grip to not slide if you prop it against something to read. I would prefer a magnet or snap closure, but after several uses the bungee gets easier to fasten. Very satisfied with this cover.
I found the Specs cases at my local Target. Prices varied from $29.99 for the standard colored (blue, purple, green) cover to $34.99 for a black 'leather' version. They did not show up at the online Target.com site. Very nice. I may have to get one.
I have ordered Industriell Cover in Carbon with Lyra Light and Anti-Glare Film when bought my Nook. And right after my order came to me in B&N store appeared Silicone Covers and Stella Light. I`d rather bought them...
What I don`t like in my cover is the way Nook is mounted into it. Why not to fix the book with four of these latches. Another thing is the size, tried to find anything that adds less to the sizes of the Nook itself.
Also in this theme I saw Speck cover, if I knew of it earlier I`d mostly bought it. But now I don`t need two covers so... I use what I use...

I have the same case, and it's not that easy to hold. And trying to press the buttons on the left just makes the entire thing flip. Also, what changed between the Lyra Light and the Stella Light?
Have no problems holding it.
Don`t like how left buttons are pushed myself that`s on what I said about latches.
Stella looks just prettier then Lyra. Also Lyra just unbends when Nook is being shaked(while reading in bus or other transport)

I think that's the one I got: I would normally never buy a case made by the device manufacturer, but I picked this one up at Best Buy for (I think) $15: it's two stiff boards, just wider than the Nook Touch itself, with a hinge at the top, with a magnetic clasp that can also be used to hold the front and back cover together as a stand when they're folded backward. The whole thing is light, compact, and protective--and not any harder to read in the case than out of it (plus, if you need a reading light, it's easier to clip it to the cover than to the Nook itself). You can even charge the device without opening the cover, though you do have to move the clasp aside.
This case must be discontinued, though, because now I can't find it on either the B&N or the Best Buy site.

Good work, very cool. Did you use a book, or some sort of journal? I have been wanting to do something like this, but do not have any books that I am willing to cut up.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
It was a blank journal that was 5.75x7in. It was tight fit but I managed.
I searched far and wide for a case for my STR and I thought about getting a Speck FitFolio until I saw one in person in Target. Seemed too flimsy. Anyway, after a long search I found Oberon covers. Solid drum dyed tooled leather, about 3/16" thick. Not cardboard covered by a thin strip of 'leather'. They come in many designs and colors and cost about $15 more than a high priced B&N cover, which is OK, because I think it will last a lifetime.
I do not work for, nor am I affiliated with Oberon Designs. I'm just a very satisfied customer.
The oberon case looks familiar:

I believe the design of the 7.7 with the power and volume controls on the right side dictated where the hinge is for the book cover case .
Think about it.....If it opened right to left ,then the power and volume buttons would be on the bottom and subject to being accidentily activated when using it as a stand in landscape mode, as it would be sitting on them. Also they couldn't be used sitting on the bottom.
I've had it on since the second day I owned my 7.7 and got used to the left to right opening now. I do really love it's tight fitting, minimalist design and keeps the tab nice and thin.Feels good in my hands and gives more grip when gaming and surfing, works great as a stand and gives some protection for this beautiful screen when transporting it.
I'm not big on the other generic designs that are out there for the 7.7 right now. If you look at ones selling on Ebay ,the sellers are selling the exact one for the 7 inch ones too and look bulky. If something better comes out then I would consider it down the road but I think this is the best one out so far .
agreed, you wouldn't be able to use it as a stand if it opened the other way.

tab 7.7 case.
Im not very impressed with mine:
1: Dont like the fact it opens the wrong way. I agree they couldnt design it any other way but still dont like it.
2. After about a week the grips that keep it steady when standing up starts slipping on various surfaces. So tab keeps falling flat.
3: No option to put it in the tipical slighly tilted for typing possition like the case for tab 8.9 or 10.1
4. I can already see small cracks in the flexible rubber (hinge bit) and the cut open bit at the power button. For this price I was expecting way more.
Argh. All these mixed reviews of the OEM book cover is getting me quite confused. I don't really think I should shell out the amount of money they're asking for the case...
Maybe I'll just get an envelope/pouch from Timbuk2 or other makers while waiting for that perfect case with the multi-view angles.
As for the cover opening the "wrong" way, I think it's the right way from where the Tab was made. Most East Asia books DO operate like that. Especially mangas

Im not very impressed with mine:
1: Dont like the fact it opens the wrong way. I agree they couldnt design it any other way but still dont like it.
2. After about a week the grips that keep it steady when standing up starts slipping on various surfaces. So tab keeps falling flat.

I have the 8.9 with the book case. Is it the same sleek design and same thinness as the 8.9 case?
I've got the book cover the same day I got my 7.7 and first I didn't like it. The hinge was very stiff, the lid wasn't flush with the back when flipped around completely. But now I'm used to it and it's ok.
But:
- when the lid was flipped to the back for a longer time you can see the top (rubberlike) material delaminating from the hard bit inside in the hinge area
- when the lid is flipped to the back it's rather wobbly. I'm used to hold the Tab in my right hand with resting it on my spread little finger. But then the lid is always moving about and just feels quite assuring.
But it's a lot better than the Samsung pouch, which is simply waste of money.
The d30 leather pouch for the old Tab was way better but of course wasn't as light and space saving and you could always loose it when you were using the Tab.
Just got my Case today.
From all the horror stories I have been reading about it I thought it was going to be horrible but I like it so far.
First off:
It is incredibly thin and light. Adds almost no bulk at all.
Tab fits very well in the case and my hinge is not stiff at all so folds over very easily.
I dont like:
- all the corners except the top right are protected. So if you were to drop it on that corned it will dent the device.
- I actually dont like the cut out for the power. The material sticks out a little when the case is closed. Wish they didnt have cut out for it.
Besides that I think its really good. I dont think you will find another book case that will be as thin as this one.

Well yes and know. Just as sleek but the big difference is the fact that it only has one stand position unlike tab 8.9 and 10.1 design that has two. One upright and one slightly tilted/flat to type. Not sure how to explain it. Hope you understand what I mean...
I, too, like its sleekness and light weight, but I have to say I wouldn't spend $40+ again -- I think it's way overpriced for what it offers -- and that's after having numerous tablets and similar cases (most selling for under $25. If you can afford to wait for the market to catch up I'd recommend not buying this one.

This place had the best price I could find. This was recommended by another member on here.

I ordered it and got confirmation on shipping too. Hence a reputable company to order from.
Thanks for the links...
If you want an alternative to the stock Samsung case I ran across this one on Ebay. Looks OK

Going to give one of these a go - Will post up some pics once it gets here, but I'm not expecting anything too fancy for that price.
None of the others caught my eye and I regularly flip between portrait and landscape.

Samsung case
Just got mine (from the cell guru) and I actually like it.
good quality and not too bulky (can still hold it with one hand easily)
for $30, I'm not sure we can find a lot better
O
I got mine today from CellGuru along with the GT 7.7 from NegriElectronics!
So stoked!
I noticed on the plastic box it came in that it had an illustration for Keyboard Mode along with Media-Viewing Mode.
Anybody find out how the Keyboard Mode is supposed to work? It looks like it's propping the Tab up several inches.
I think Keyboard Mode is a mistake. There's really no way this thing can be propped up that way unless you just put something between the two sides.
Here's another case that popped up on ebay. Looks interesting, still debating if I should buy one.

I love the Samsung Case. It is quite svelt. I don't like that you only really have one angle to stand but it still looks awesome and as others have mentioned you still get a feel for how thin and light this tablet is.
