[Q] G tab experience from recent purchasers? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought a g tab but it's still in the mail. In anticipation of its arrival, I was wondering what the experience of people who recently purchased their g tab (within the last few weeks) has been. Specifically,
Did you play with the stock rom? What did you like/not like about it?
Did you install a custom rom? If so, which one? If not, did you do anything to make your stock rom experience more enjoyable?
I plan to play with the stock rom for a few days before deciding to mod.

Got mine before the recent rush...
Play with stock ROM? Yes... Hated nearly everything but appreciated the concept.
Install Custom? Yes... about two hours in. Knowing I would never have to deal with the initial stock load again made the experience very enjoyable ;-) Tried several settled on TnT Lite. Eventually upgraded to TwoTapsX but I rarely leave a ROM installed for more than a few days before I start playing again.
Oh... "Soft" bricked on day three or four... and several times since then. The devs here have supplied some great information and the community is happy to share it. Makes it a little easier to deal with that inevitable feeling of panic...
Welcome aboard and enjoy.

I got mine a few days ago from woot . I am sticking with stock for right now. I do not think switching over a ROM is necessary for me at this point. Since I am new to the android system, I want to learn how it works before i go in and switch stuff up. Also, with the rumors of an update in the 'near' future, I thought i might wait to see what happens. Of course, near could mean 3 months.
stock was a little annoying at first (maybe cause I didn't know what I was doing), but I enjoy it. Maybe it is because I have not experienced TnT Lite or played with any other tablets, but stock seems to run just fine for me. the stock app store is sub par, but it gets the job done. I downloaded the amazon marketplace app and got a few apps from there.
I am not the main user on it, my wife is, so mostly angry birds is being run haven't pushed its limits much.

Got mine yesterday. The stock ROM lasted the 10 minutes it took me to root the thing and install vegantab. This thing is blazingly fast. Nice bump up from the Archos 101 I previously had. I'm missing the kickstand and HDMI port the Archos had. Other than that the gtab is better. The screen angle viewing is pretty much a wash. Great buy from woot.

Got mine last night. I see what many are saying about the viewing angles, but I also don't find it that distracting. I can see how a glare reducing screen saver might help and will probably buy one. Charged it and updated to 3588 (while coaching my sons soccer team). Played with tapntap for about a minute and knew I hated it (I'm on my 3rd Android phone, an Evo and all have been rooted and heavily modded). Installed clockworkmod, partitioned storage and installed VEGAn. Much better. Unfortunately, I didn't get a whole lot of time to play further. I did notice that the market is missing a ton of apps like all browsers, es file manager (was installed in stock rom) and a bunch more. I'll look into resolving that this evening. One issue I have with the capacitive buttons beyond no back light is the placement. When using the tablet in landscape (most of the time?) I found myself accidentally hitting the back button repeatedly.

I recieved mine on Tuesday afternoon. I have not had a lot of time to fool with it yet. So far I have kept the stock ROM (as suggested by roebeet and others) until I get used to it. This is my first Android device, so I'm at a low point on the learning curve.
First impressions: the interface is fairly intuitive. I found most everything I was looking for.
The viewing angle is also a non-issue to me so far. I don't plan to watch videos or play games with a lot of animation, so I don't care about that. I may change my mind later when I try to read documents and/or books, we'll see.
Went to the app store and downloaded a couple of free games. I had no problems or issues with downloading or gameplay (very simple games). One game screen was distorted a bit from stretching to the larger screen, but it was a non-issue to me.
I did some web browsing, and had the same issue as jp8tr: kept accidentally brushing the "back" button in the middle of reading something. Watched a short youtube video and the playback was just fine. I noticed some pages loaded slowly and occasionally it would hang.
Overall, I'm happy with it and think it will suit my purposes nicely. I think I probably will change the ROM at some point, but I need to be a little more savvy before I launch off into that.

So I got mine in, and on first boot up, I liked the TnT UI, but the more I played with it the less I liked it. It’s a great design concept, but I feel it’s more of an alpha build of the UI then something that should be in production. Give it a few more rev and it may be good. Today I plan on putting on CM7 RC3 and see how it likes like. I have been using CM for a while now on my different phones so I expect it to work well on the gtablet.
As far as the viewing angle, in landscape it works well, but in portrait mode not so well on the dark spots. but not a deal breaker for me.

Kept getting errors with the stock ROM
I got 2 of these in on Monday from Woot. 1 for the fiancee and 1 for myself (it was her B-day present but I couldn't resist not getting one too). I had also researched and figured modding it would be immanent so I felt it was a good idea to have one to "test" things on and then her's to keep running as smoothly as possible (she doesn't have patients..)
So we charged them and booted them up and after about 30 minutes of constant errors I decided to install TNT lite on mine, and after a few minutes of playing with that, installed the same on hers. It runs a lot faster and doesn't give me the constant errors. (Weird that not everyone seems to get constant errors like we were getting with stock)... Since then we have installed the free ADW launcher and I'm loving it with the exception of the top bar (the one that has the clock, wifi status, battery, etc.....) seems to want to hide (even when I have it set not to). Its actually like I can slide the screen left and right (to change to different home screens, like is expected), and can scroll up and down (but just the amount that that top bar takes up (I think this is called the Status Bar?). Curious if anyone has seen this, so far searches are not finding anything.
Other than that, it running pretty good, speed wise it blows away my original Droid phone. I see that Robeet posted a new version of TNT lite that will take care of the sleep issue and will upgrade to that in a few days once more people have posted on it. I'm new at modding phones/tablets and prefer not to be a guinea pig

I got mine about a week before the wooters, I went with vegan 7. I love this thing, it is fast and does everything I want it to do. Flash plays without a hiccup, pages scroll smoothly. Market Place has nearly everything I need, and if you can't find it there, you can find it elsewhere. Only issues I have are the viewing angles (won't pretend its not an issue), capacitive buttons being unlit and accidently pushed, the sleep issue, and an issue where my internal storage doesn't sync back after disconnecting from a of sometimes. It's an awesome tablet though, glad I skipped the archos 101.

Got my Woot gTab last night.
Played with the stock ROM for all of 15 minutes. It kept dropping my wireless and various other oddities. I let it do it's update to stock and messed with it some more. I really wanted the market and all of my apps I had stored in AppBrain.
Loaded Clockworkmod and then went to VeganTab 7 with Clemsyn's 7 kernel. This thing flies and I am slowly getting it to where I want it with my widgets and apps.
I also use Kindle quite-a-bit and reading on this is great. The viewing angles have not been an issue for me AT ALL. If anything, I love the viewing angle and heres why. When in portrait mode and reading a book, no one can see or read over my shoulder! When in landscape mode and surfing the web, I never had an issue with viewing angle (sitting in bed with the gTab on my lap). Viewing angle is non-issue for me and in all honesty I prefer that someone next to me on a plane or otherwise cannot see the screen. Call me paranoid.
My only complaint so far is that it powers off after going to sleep. Not sure if there is a fix for that, I have yet to find a setting. Not a huge deal as it boots fast, but I would still like to hit the power button and come up to the unlock slider and then home screen.

I got mine yesterday. Unfortunately after charging for over an hour, I wasn't able to boot it up. It was stuck in a boot loop. I am guessing that whoever installed the kindle app/Flash/Angry Birds janked it up. With help from roebeet I was able to recover it and then flash it to 3558. After that I installed tnt lite 4.4 and it is running like a champ.

The viewing angle is a security/privacy feature.

Great impressions everyone.!

Got mine yesterday. After playing with the Stock ROM for a couple hours put on TNT Lite. Got the boot loop so went back to stock ROM and tried TNT again and worked with no issues.
Works great so far!
The viewing angles hasn't been that much of a problem so far. I do feel I need to get a screen protector though.

I played with stock for about an hour and then put TNT Lite on it and Clemsyns v7.
I don't mind the screen angles too much, its not as bad as some people make it seem.
I am finding it to be sluggish. Not so slow its unusable, but not what I would consider responsive or snappy as some people have described it.
For example, when I was entering my google account information, after entering my password it took pressing the 'next' button thrree times before it started loading the next screen. I'm not sure if its busy, or if it is not registering my touch.
I've noticed it also when launching items, for example pressing the browser button 2 or 3 times to get it started.
I initially thought it was just me, but then when I was watching some of the review youtube videos, I noticed that sometimes when launching an app or a game the reviewer had to touch the icon twice to get it started.
This isnt a troll, the pros of it outweight the negatives, its just something I'm going to have to get used to dealing with. Maybe I'll look for some kind of load or busy indicator so I'll just know to be patient and wait rather than keep pressing. The problem is im not sure if my touch was actually registered or if its just busy.

Did you run the calibration app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=934500 ? Helped for my touch issues.

Got my Gtab yesterday. have problem to update the first time, keep fC. Turn off and reboot, then the update went fine. I find the stock is still very slow even with the update. Follow the instruction, installed CWM 0.8, then installed Calkulin V1.1, then updated the kernel, install hacked flash player 10.1. The market works but don't know if I get the real "gmarket", I saw word "sprint" gmarket screen. How do I just select "free" apps? I dont' seem to find the option. The gtab is very responsive and fast with this rom. However, the rom still has the "sleep to death" problem" like the others. Flash works. Viewing angle does kinda bad, however, someone on forum suggest that if you turn the gtab upside down, the view angle get approve, which I tried and I think it's much better. I wondering if I can take out the screen myself and installed the other way. I use rockplayer for video, it plays very good. Problem, when playing video, the screen will not rotate, so I can use the "better" side of the view angel, that also apply to play angry bird, rotating not work. Web and home screen are rotated as I turn the tablet. If the video and games rotate, then it's good for me. When you need privacy, you use hold the table regular way, to share, turn upside down. ooh, Hulu works. Anyone has the rotation on video and angry bird problem like me? Also, does anyone has any instruction on how to set up home screen with widget? I am so new to android, I kinda loss with play the widget last night.

Mine should come today or tomorrow and I'm planning on playing with the stock rom for couple days before I move on to something else. This will be my first tablet and I'm looking forward to the experience.
I initially had my eyes on the Xoom wifi but I couldn't pass on the WOOT deal and saved me some $$$

Got mine last night. Played with the stock ROM. The interface had it's pro's and cons. The biggest con was that I was getting quite a few force close dialogs for even the pre-installed apps.
Since then I have installed a custom ROM, TNT Lite 4.4.0, along with using LauncerPro. After doing this, I haven't had nearly the number of force close dialogs appearing. I am however still having issues finding apps that I want through Android Market, so I'll see if going to an older version of TNT Lite will help, else I will have to find the APK files and install them manually. However, even with how it is, it is still much better then the APP store that came with the stock ROM.

Keep em rolling!
Oh-some responses folks, keep them rolling. I'm still waiting for mine
to come in the mail. It should get here today or tomorrow .
I saw something about 'wiping data/cache' before modding on a bunch of the
threads. Is this necessary for brand new devices, once you get the OTA update?
Also, do you need CWM to do the data/cache wiping, or can this be done with
stock tools?

HTC Hero - Always this laggy?

I'll start this thread noting that I've come from an iPhone 3GS and came to expect things to open and close smoothly. That being said, I do know that you need to keep an eye on open apps through a task manager and close out things that you don't need on the Android OS, but I feel like this device just can't hang with other smartphones currently.
I'm constantly nagged with keypresses lagging for over a second, half of the time when I'm trying to type quickly it will register a single button press as a long press and I end up getting the alt key instead of the plain letter.
I have a fresh load of the MoDaCo ROM and ever since I received the phone a week ago I've been severely disappointed. Attempting to answer phone calls ends up with the screen telling me to drag down to answer and is completely unresponsive, but sometimes answers the call and sometimes just turns on the speaker and mic, but doesn't connect the call.
I've removed footprints, as well as stocks from the base ROM to pull out anything I wouldn't need. My understanding is that should only have a positive impact on performance.
Menus are sluggish to say the least, often times taking 1-3 seconds just to open a sub-menu.
Did I just get a bum phone that someone tried to pawn off because there might be something wrong with it? Is this the behavior that people have been experiencing from the HTC Hero? Does anyone know a way to speed this little bugger up and make it useful?
I've installed the Overclock widget and set it to 528mhz and verified that it's still set there each time I've rebooted the phone, as well as using Android Task Manager to keep a select few applications as "do not close" so that the phone doesn't freak out and try to reload a bunch of apps.
I'm about to throw this damn phone out the window currently. I absolutely loved my G1 when I had it, and this thing feels like it's two or three steps DOWN from that phone.
Please, help me actually want to keep my phone. I LOVE the Android OS, and I love the form factor and sound quality.
i came from a hermes to the hero.. and its fooking awsomes, the lag you are getting is non existant on my hero, its a stock t-moblie as i is on contract with it atm and dont wanna risk screwing up and my insurance says F U!
if they could make a hero with a iphone screen i would be be a very VERY happy man.
sure its just not the rom u flashed? try flashing another? i used to get hassel with my hermes if it did not like the rom (wm6.5 for one it hated it but some loved it)
I might try out another ROM, but the only one that I thought I'd seen was the MoDaCo. I will have to look around the forums to see if there are any others that I can attempt to flash to my Hero. I suppose if all else fails I can just get a rooted base ROM and install WiFi tethering from there, since it's an app that I use on a VERY regular basis.
I've never updated from the original 1.5 ROM I received on my unlocked white hero. It is a bit laggy when using the Sense UI. However, when I "revert" to the Android OS Home screen (by disabling Sense UI / Touch Flo) it is VERY responsive. And that is fine for me......
I have the Hero and an iPhone 3GS and the Hero is very laggy in comparison. We have a few Android devices here in work to test/evaluate and none f them are without lag. No matter what people say I can't help thinking that they are looking through rose tinted glasses or refure point blank that the device they chose coudl possibly be less than perfect.
If you use an iPhone 3GS along side the Hero then the lag is very apparent. Scrolling through TouchFLO, scrolling the menu, typing, all have lag no matter how often I use Takiller.

Bear in mind android isn't there that long and the Iphone is... Iphone won't improve Android will.
I updated my hero to the last official rom and I don't think it lags at all.
But I didn't own an Iphone, so I wouldn't know how it compares to that.
Tooslo says:

If that's the case, send the darn thing back. It's supposed to be faster then the G1 and I haven't heard anyone saying it's not except you. Also waiting 3?! seconds for a submenu seems impossible, they almost instantly pop up here.
Also:
but I feel like this device just can't hang with other smartphones currently.
I had a diamond and had a play with the diamond 2, both don´t even come close to the hero, same with the touch HD
Sorry to say but I think yours has some issues that are not fixable by any software updates. Send it back.
Unfortunately I purchased the phone from someone on another forum, so there is little/no chance of ever getting a replacement since I wasn't the person who originally purchased it.
I've tried reloading the MoDaCo 2.9 ROM with the Teknologist kernal after formatting my SD card and re-creating the ext2 and swap partitions.
It's running a bit faster, but it's still frustrating that this device is so slow in comparison to my wife's 3GS. I can type more than 1 letter per second on the keyboard and only occasionally get the problem with the key registering a long press.
I'm always killing unnecessary processes, but I find myself needing to reboot the phone several times a day to keep it running at a moderate clip.

Try not killing anything at all, and leaving Android to handle it. Whilst some people swear by task killers, others (myself included) don't use them and often we're the ones who don't seem to suffer from excessive lag!
BTW - comparing the Hero to the iPhone 3GS is always going to be a bit unfair, because the 3GS has a vastly superior processor. Comparisons to an iPhone 3G are far more apposite.
Regards,
Dave
don't use swap, especially on a slow sd card. android will only be dragged down by using swap, because then it does not close applications automatically as long as it does not run out of memory.
also, using a faster sd card might improve your overall experience with modaco.

I should clarify myself with that. I try to kill things like Market, Facebook, UniWar and Browser through the day.
I notice that if I leave any of those apps open it's going to turn into a slideshow afterward. I would say that after having the phone turned on for more than 60 minutes, if I try to play UniWar, by the end of a few turns, the game has almost stopped responding as a whole. It's frustrating as the final decision to move back to the Android platform was the fact that this game was available here, since I play it with my officemate during the day.

2.9 doesnt need a swap partition it uses compcache also upgrade to an ext3 or ext4 partition 2.9 is actually a blindingly fast rom.
Tried 2 hero's of some friends of mine yesterday, all the official latest htc rom.
And all of them respond like mine, no need for mcr 2.9 or whatever.
I've said it before, I don't think this is a rom problem, maybe defect ram memory or something.
I would definitely try disabling swapper. If you are using swapper, you are giving the Android memory management routines no chance to improve your experience because the don't know that you're out of physical memory and are swapping to flash memory that is going to be an order of magnitude or two slower than the physical RAM.
Regards,
Dave
So I've upgraded the Ext2 to an Ext3 partition and everything "felt" a little better, but I keep running into the fact that my phone just does NOT like to respond when woken up.
It's incredibly slow to be able to pull down the notification tab or move from the "main" screen in any way. I've ordered a new SD card and will reformat and only use the Data/Ext3 partition when possible, I'm just at a loss of why this type of behavior would happen.
Is this a result of using my phone to sync with my work Exchange server? I only have it set to ping the server every 15 minutes, but man, the phone becomes useless when it's attempting to sync over EDGE. I can't get ANY type of connectivity, even through games that only process 20-40k/hr data usage.
Are there "no-no" type applications to stay away from? I've removed every widget aside the WiFi toggle and Overclock Widget. I'm just tired of rebooting my phone every couple hours.
afaik there is no working overclock app/widget for hero, try removing that.
there is the option of wiping to see whether the problem continues.
seems to me like the Modaco rom is the problem. a lot of people are on the stock Hero rom and don't get any lag at all and certainly don't need to reboot the phone so often...
It's not the Modaco ROM - I've been using Modaco since the first versions, and it is fine.
HOWEVER.....
I've never bothered with Apps2SD or Swapper, and I'm pretty certain that Swapper is going to cause problems.
Regards,
Dave
I'm pretty sure the hero will never be as smooth or quick as the iPhone... you just have to decide whether you can live how smooth the hero is. On Mocado 2.8 and not using any task manager I definitely can.
Update on device
So I've received my 4gb Class 6 card, created a 1GB Ext3 partition, no swap partition and reloaded MoDaCo 2.9. I've also tried this with a stock rooted image as well. These results apply to both ROMs I've loaded.
At first it "felt" somewhat fast, but then after adding the following, it's just dreadfully slow.
Exchange email
UniWar
Handcent SMS
Advanced Task Killer
Systray Monitor
ShootMe (never running)
Better Terminal Emulator
Apps Installer
I don't really think any of those should have this type of negative impact on the phone, though I have noticed that my Exchange email does take an extremely long time to sync, but it seems isolated to this device.
My Exchange settings are:
Size Limit - 5kb
Frequency - 15 minutes
Past Mail - 3 days
Include attachments - Never
Reply w/ original text - Yes
Always BCC - no
Those seem to be the only things that are currently ever running.
Are there major conflicts that I should know about with any of those apps?
Even with a fresh install, properly partitioned SD card, current version of both the MoDaCo as well as stock rooted ROM.
Anyone?

[Q] My Woot G Tablet just shipped! Now tell me which way I should hack it.

I'm excited to get this tablet (after ordering an Archos 101 and getting fed up with the delays) and am looking forward to tinkering with some ROMs. I have some experience with Android (rooted Droid X owner) so I have no doubt I can figure it out.
My question is which custom ROM is the best all-arounder (reliability, speed, updatable, features, support, ...)?
I'm sure each has their strengths and weaknesses, but what I'm looking for is maybe some arguments for/against each from experienced users. (And yes I've watched the youtube videos and such but its hard to tell long term satisfaction from a 5 min video) Thanks in advance.
Zeebok1337,
I'm sure people are not thrilled that I always give this answer, but I think you need
to use the stock tablet and get the stock updates for a while.
When you have charged it and turn it on the first time, you will need to find the
Settings icon and check the About tab to see what version you're on. So far people
are getting 3389.
Then set up your wifi Internet access. Within a couple of minutes, you should get
a Notification on the upper right portion of the screen telling you an OTA (over the air)
update is available -- probably 3588. If so go through the routine and D/L and
install it.
That done, you should have a good G-Tablet, but you will not have Market and
some other stuff most of us want. You also will need to go in and set the date/time
and a lot of other little details on the Settings icon.
http://www.viewsonic.com/gtablet has a bunch of pages of info on the G-Tablet --
and best of all the "Favorites" tab has links to a lot of the more common D/Ls.
By the time you do this and the do your homework reading here at XDA, you should
begin getting an idea of what the tab can do and where you want to go.
I don't recommend any of the experimental stuff, or perhaps even the gingerbread
stuff until you have your feet on the ground and know what you are doing.
That means basically I think you would be happiest with the TNT Lite or Vegan ROMS.
Both basically do the same thing and speeds are compatable. In the beginning, Vegan
was a little more sophisticated with screen lock, good graphics, etc. But as VS has
improved with updates and Roebeet has added stuff, TNT Lite has become just as
sophisticated. So flip a coin or make your best guess and go from there.
You just need to take time to know what you want and how to do it so you don't
wind up with a semi-brick like all too many folks do...........

Very good info. Does any of these Roms have sync with Google calendar and Contacts ?? And if so which Rom does that ?

I can't speak for them all, but TNT Lite does. It replaces most of the Viewsonic apps with stock Google apps (The browser and the music apps being the exception). Most likely most of them do, however - just read up on their posts to see what each offers.
Thank you. I really want to leave the stock rom and if there was a way to add Google calendar and contacts sync ( like there is with Gmail with the enhancment) I would keep it but I really need my contacts and calendar. Again Thanks.
Corwins CM7 FTW.
I recommend installing a keyboard with key height adjustment like thumb keyboard, disabling the capacitive buttons with button remapper and using button savior for soft buttons.
Also, the case crown kindle dx case from amazon is a great fit and looks great.
I am in the same boat. GTablet is charging right now. I have an Archos 101 and decided to get a GTablet for playing with. I have an EVO phone but I have never rooted anything so far. I have a computer background so I can probably work it out. Also have a little help from my friends.
Woot G Tablet on the bench
First off I would like to thank Butchconner for the advice I have seen on this forum on getting started with a new G Tablet. "Leave it stock for awhile"
Mine is on the work bench right now charging. It was one of the Woot deals. I am currently using an Archos 101 I got just before Xmas and it works great with no rooting or custom ROMS. I managed to get the wife to use it to read some books from the Kindle store. Look up technophobic and my wifes picture will be there.
I got the Viewsonic because of the Woot deal (Damn that big shinny button).
I'm thinking of leaving the G Tablet stock for the wife right now but she has gotten used to the standard Android interface on her EVO phone. In fact she has gotten pretty good at using the phone.
I understand that the stock user interface for the Viewsonic is very different than what would be seen on the Android or the EVO. Right now I'd just like to get the wife using it to read books and move on to other things later.
Most of the posts regarding the rooting and updating of the ROM's seem a little excessive to me right now. What I am afraid of is the Viewsonic with the stock interface may be too foreign for my wife. Any comments from the forum users?
Thanks again.
The 3588 build (which should arrive as an OTA Update) has a more generic launcher built in. Easy to switch to it if your wife prefers the standard Android interface. No need to load a custom ROM unless you choose to.
what I did with my woot-g
charged it all the way up
started it up
added to my wi-fi
ran the update (it'll ask you to)
rooted
installed clockwork recovery, did a backup, reboot
copied backup to sdcard2
recovery, repartitioned (2048/0), factory reset, reboot
recovery, backup again, reboot
copy new backup to sdcard2, copy old backup back to sdcard
recovery, restore old backup, reboot
played a while then installed TNT lite.
probably missed a few steps but overall this made backups as soon as I could while moving forward. There is no comparison between the stock rom and TNTlite, am looking forward to trying vegan5.1.1
Yeah I jumped 20 feet forward and installed VEGAN Gingerbread even before it was fully charged. played with it a little, then read some more and installed VEGAN 5.0
loving it and haven't even scratched the surface yet.
I charged it, then when it was fully charged, i installed CWM, then VEGAN.
I never did a OTA update before installing CWM and VEGAN.
Does that mean that I messed something up or will lose some functionality?
ZB
I got mine yesterday (FL)
and as this is my 3rd tablet (wife has an augen and I have a ZT180) I have to say that the ROM that is pre loaded is MUCH better than you have heard.
Now it may not be lightening fast, but what will you be comparing it to?
No Market, but I have about 9 DVD's full of APK's that I will NEVER get through.
That being said I DID the TNTLITE update, but then again I cant even ESTIMATE the number of FW flashes I have done since I got the Augen in August (which BTW is also a pretty decent tablet)
but I have to say, there is a RUMOR around the net that ONE of the more recent updates from viewsonic will NOT allow a 3rd party flash, but like I said I did 1 over the air update to 3588 and then went TNTlite
but I also have a lot of experience doing them, BUT I will say hands down this is one of the best tablets I have used (even at the retail price)

No....Vegan should have entirely replaced the original firmware so it made no difference whether you updated or not.
I've only really used Cyanogenmod on my HTC Incredible. On my tablet, thus far, I've tried vanilla, Cyanogen, and Vegan. I think I've found Vegan to be my ROM of choice.
TNT Lite
I just flashed the newest edition of TNT lite (4.4.0) and I was blown away by how easy it was. I would really recommend it. Very easy to use for anyone who is not a pro at this kinda stuff.
Woot Deal
Hey guys just got the tab off woot. Charged it then. Loaded clockwork then cleared cache data then rebooted. Then added tnt 4.2 it worked for about 6 hours then of course when I tried to turn it on it keeps rebooting. What should I do? Is it a good idea to take the tnt off? Or can I do that? I'm just pretty upset right now. Can anyone help me out please?
To fix the boot loop you will need to repartition the card and then reinstall the ROM. Boot into clockwork mod then select repartion and set 1st selection to 2048 and second to 0. This will wipe your tab tho. You will then have to reinstall the ROM.
Thanks
You saved my life man. For some reason the stock rom has been erased for the tab also. Does anyone have the stock rom?

[Q] Transformer Prime Concerns?

Transformer Prime: Not sure if some of these issues are only isolated to me or everyone experiencing these :
1. I added my gmail and I have about 2k photos on there. When I open Gallery it takes like almost 10 mins to sync. The gallery in general seems to be very slow. Anyone else?
2. At times the screen starts jumping. The only way to fix this is restarting the tablet.
3. The browser is very slow sometimes. Comparing to my phone and computers.it takes almost twice as long.
I have an ipad1 and I'm an android maniac, I really want to love this tablet but every day there seems to be another issue poping up. I'm sure CES will announce some more quadcores soon, I'm in love with android and I like TP but I am starting to reconsider holding on to this since I still have another week to return it. What to do....?
Yeah, the Android Gallery is kinda of sucky and slow, but its not a Prime problem since its that way on nearly all Android Devices. I hope ICS improves this.
The stock browser is also a little sluggish, but I heard this is a known problem in Honeycomb. Once again ICS will hopefully be an improvement.
I have not had any screen jumping. There was an issue with the ASUS boot logo jumping around during boot, but the last firmware fixed that. However, doesn't sound like that was the problem you have described.
You may want to contact ASUS on this, or exchange it. It should definitely not have the display going funky.
Other than the screen issue, you might want to hang onto the Prime until ICS goes out. Honeycomb was a half-baked release anyway caused by manufacturers complaining to Google about not having an iPad competitor version of Android.

Search for the browser thread where the OP lists a few tweaks to make to the browser through the debug menu. I swear, it makes it like a completely different browser. It's completely smooth. That thread should really be stickied, if you ask me.
mine does none of that with the exception of the sometimes slow browser but to be honest i think that has more to do with my network and whats getting priory at the time since sometimes it's really fast and other times it's very slow, i downloaded a few torrents directly on to it and all went well and was as fast as expected, also netflix doesn't stumble at all either which makes me think the tablet is good but more of a problem with my bandwidth......800 meg movie file took about 10 mins on my 30/30 home connection with other computers running torrents and streaming netflix on the smart tv, so heavy network usage at the time.
but no shaking of the screen or other issues, and pic gallery's load fine after the initial visit, make sure you have your caching turned on in your browser and that your not downloading 2k thumbnails every time you visit the site, or at the very least i'll just say this sounds like a settings issue as opposed to something wrong with the tablet from the factory, maybe also set it up where it only sync's every so often or something, not sure how your setup works but you shouldn't need to be downloading 2k worth of thumbnails and/or pics everytime you log on to something, play with your settings and see what you can come up with....also snych'ing porn always take x3's as long unless your pretty quick if you know what i mean....lol j/k
that said, this is just my experience in the last 4 days i've had this tablet and spent about 6-8 hours a day on it so far.............feels well built in the hand to me so i don;t expect any defects to start showing up from nowhere that aren't related to software in someway or another.

mine was less smooth to me after the tweaks so i reverted back to default settings and seemed fine again, my understand was the tweaks only helped the responsiveness during the loading of a new page, i could be wrong but that's how i read it, regardless give the new settings a shot , worst case you just revert back like i did.
also play with the synch settings in your gmail account.
those tweaks don't work for everyone. plus it gets reset everytime that browser shuts down. then you have to do that stuff all over again. Opera mobile is your best bet. even with those tweaks, people who tried it said it can't compare to opera mobile. only drawback is flash is sketchy on opera till it gets updated.

Interesting. I'm not sure why they don't work for everyone, but they work great for me. The OP updated his original post after he saw he gave the wrong settings at first, so if you haven't visited that thread in a while, it might be worth checking out again.
Also, my settings do not revert every time the browser is closed. The Debug menu disappears, and I have to type about:debug to access the debug settings again, but when I go in there, my changed settings show up as being saved.
And the settings don't just increase the speed of loading my pages. It makes pinching and zooming, as well as scrolling, much more smooth.
All of this will be moot next week anyway once ICS is rolled out

right, i wish everyone would quit judging this thing till ICS comes out, i get the GPS rants as that won't improve with ICS, but 90% of other complaints should be addressed by ICS, it's just sucks waiting, but doesn't suck as bad as having no TF201 in my hands all together..better to have a prime with gingerbread now and get an update the no prime all together, the only way i'll be disappointed is if CES unvailes another tablet with the same specs but more ram and it ships in the next 2 weeks, lol, don't see that happening, so i'm sticking with mine..
return it and wait for something better next month.
and then wait for something else even better the month after that, and then the month after that.
price/performance (unless GPS w/o wifi is a huge concern for you) there is nothing out there in the near future that will be better than the prime.
the gen1 tablets have shown that asus offers the best bang for the buck.
also, if you want the dock experience, there is nothing that competes. not even the glorious touchpad. :|

Exactly on the tweaks. I gave up on that with the Xoom long ago. Face it, the Honeycomb browser stinks period. You want the best (not perfect) experience, go with Opera until ICS comes out. Flash? I have to actually say that Steve Jobs was right on this one. If that is important to you, try to get over it because it is going away. Opera does work with Flash but I do not know what the limitations are.

Noticeable Lag?

Hopefully I won't get attacked for asking this but I have seen some lag on the device; both in videos and playing with it. Browsing the web seemed to produce the most lag. It just didn't seem as zippy as it should. I know the device as a Qualcomm Processor which isn't as powerful as the Exynos processor but I didn't think you could tell a difference. Can I get some feedback on this before I purchase the device tomorrow? Thanks

It's impossible to tweak until you get the device. It's best to do some research on these forums before or after you buy the phone.
I personally have no lag at all, along with many other people on this forum.
Installing a different launcher and custom roms are just one of the many things you can do to improve performance.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I am currently on one of the ICS leaks, using nova launcher, and have virtually no lag. ICS seems to have fixed video playback being a bit jumpy for me, though it wasn't a huge problem on GB. On GB I was running Solaris Prime, overclocked to 1.83 GHz, and using ADW EX, experienced no lag whatsoever there either. I use Dolphin Browser HD instead of the stock browser most of the time, and that had given me very smooth performance all around, as well as access to desktop sites instead of mobile sites.
If you get a Note that seems super laggy, exchange it for a new one in your first 30 days until you get a good one. It seems as though most Notes are fine, with only a select few experiencing poor performance, most of which can probably actually be attributed to the person's own apps and not the actual device.
Buy it and be prepared for all other phones to pale in comparison to this beast...it has ruined all other phones for me, so that I will likely only upgrade to the Note 2 when that rolls around. This thing is crazy awesome.

Thanks for the replies. I plan on picking it up and loading the custom rom Saurom which everyone says is super stable.
I noticed *minor* lag with scrolling using Dolphin Browser in gingerbread. In ICS, it is smoother than an iphone.
Noticeable Lag
I upgraded my galaxy note to the ICS upgrade. I was a horrible experience as seems to be the norm with ATT rom upgrades. First there was no OTA support for the upgrade. I had to search for the Samsung Kies app and download it. Which took almost 2.5 hours for a 70mb file. Though the program did work okay once i got it downloaded and installed.
So now im upgraded to the long awaited ICS for the ATT Galaxy Note. It turns out its complete garbage. It has all but crippled my phone. The phone lags so bad i cant flip from screen to screen without having to stop and wait 10 to 15 seconds for it to reload each screen. Half the apps no longer work as they should. My Go messenger no longers alerts me when i get a text. When i take a picture to send it to someone. The picture never sends and it doesnt save. it just gets lost in limbo forever.
Answering calls is a futile experience as well. If the phone doesnt crash and reset. It blacks the screen out from lag so long that the voicemail picks up before i can answermy call. So them i have to wait for all this to stop go to my log see who called and try to call them back. Then the phone proceeds to crash back to the home screen 2 out of every three times i try to make a call.
This upgrade is garbage. Give me back gingerbread. Before this upgrade my galaxy note was the fastest most responsive phone i have ever seen. I rarley even had to turn it off to reset it and i think i have only taken the battery out of it once since i got it on launch day. Now the phone has been rendered completley usless.

Clearly your phone experience is "not" normal as compared to most users here.
Perhaps you are unlucky and have a bad upgrade ?
Mine went well , and I only did it to test the update to gather information .
If you are not rooted ...might I suggest doing so , and trying one of the many great roms here.
Or you could restore back to GB to restore your original functionality.
Either way ...I'm sorry that your phone experience has been so miserable. And surely there is help here for you ...g

Thanks for the reply. I used to really enjoy my galaxy note. But the last two weeks or so have been unbearable. Im no tready to go with a custom rom since it seems to em that most of them are not fully functional in some way or another. But i did read on here that some people had very successful upgrades. So im going to figure out what i need to do to redo the upgrade and try again.
I am running the offical att flavor of ics and it sometimes wants to multitask like the iphone. I do get a lot of music skips when running power amp.
If you're nervous about stability, don't be. At the very least you could flash a debloated stock based ROM, or if you're feeling a little more adventurous try Cyanogenmod. Very stable, more so than the ICS update.
Its common knowledge that carriers and OEMs make horrible stock ROMs. Everyone has had a problem like you, and have taken the plunge of flashing a ROM.
There's nothing to be afraid of. Its not a life decision that you can't turn back on. Its easy to go back to stock if you're scared. But there's around 10 great options in the Development section if you want stability.
Bloatware and Touchwiz cripples the phone. Thank goodness for XDA devs!

Hi, Apologise in advanced for a rant but, surely I cant be the only person having issues with this phone? I have black version, in UK with EE. I decided to not get the iPhone XS MAX for this, last year I had the iPhone x it was super fast and efficient. But so far ive had this device 48 hours and im guttered i bought it so far. Im having a lot of issues with fps drops, if I have apps open it goes slow, for example Pokemon go, I find just spinning the ball starts making it lag, compared to my girlfriends s8 and my old iphone, its just constantly feeling unsmooth and dropping frames.
Sometimes the keyboard lags if I have a few apps open, with the specs inside im unsure how it can be failing this bad and lagging for me. Im actually close to sending this back to EE within 14 days, if this doesnt get fixed I cant stick with this for 2 years...
Ive seen a few people talking about performance mode within battery settings but I dont see this, I also dont understand why when im on the phone, notifications arent popping up sometimes, I also have this stupid notification that I cant get rid off, about showing notifications on screen or something.
At the moment, not having a good time at all, is anyone else feeling the same? my version is EMUI 9.0.0.108(C432E10R1P16)
I just dont uderstand how a phone for this cost with the great specs it has can be failing for me so much when multitasking. Especially when watching everyones YouTube videos before launch its running perfectly smooth... I just dont understand it. Maybe its my device? Maybe its just because im used to quick and effecient iphone/samsung devices and this is lacking
Anyone else having issues?
EDIT: I don't understand why, but since making this post, I've had absolutely. No issues with the device, its ran super smooth exactly as it should. In my opinion, pokemon go has ran perfectly. I love this phone, I don't want rid of it and it has so much potential, but I need this performance consistently, not just sporadic where its good for a few hours then suddenly bad again, I've since learned I'm stuck on update 108 apparently there's already a new one out but not with EE yet, maybe they've fixed some. Issues, I couldn't find a change log anywhere
Don't see any of this. I am used to using iPhone (although not X) for work and 20 pro is so much faster
I wish it would be understood that software must settle after first setup for a few days 3-4 avg. Same goes for after a reset
You saying that is slower than S8 is VERY worrying as that phone to me was considerably slower than S9+ or Note 9 and both S9+ and Note 9 were still pretty slow and laggy for me (and a lot of dropping frames) I was expecting an upgrade in terms of speed from Note 9 to Mate 20 Pro :/. Fastest phone I've used is Oneplus 6 and it was waaay faster and smoother than Note 9.
I'll let you know next week how mine is. Did you by any chance do a clean set up (installing and configuring everything from scratch) or did you use the app/feature to clone everything from previous phone?
Same thing here
Occasional keyboard lags, touch latency lag, that annoying notification
Apart from this it's a very good phone
I really hope we can achieve root at some point soon, as now I've got this all setup, I'm starting to miss the additional features root offers....
Clean install, it's weird and this probably sounds so dumb, but when I'm outdoors on pokemon go it feels choppy compared to indoors... However maybe it's not the phone and its an issue with pokemon go. Pubg ran fine, bare in mind you can only. Use low graphics until a later update haha.
I also heard a few people saying that for some reason over a few days it gets better so see what happens

Yes I'm finding lots of issues with software too. Which is a shame because I love everything else. I'm not finding too much lag but I have notice when YouTube is in PIP things do lag.
The camera app switching between wide and telephoto lens is very laggy and hangs... It even sometimes hangs when taking a picture
3rd party launchers are pretty much a no go, there either crash and don't work at all or work with some bugs.
I sometimes get notifications for WhatsApp etc and where the body of the message is suppose to be is blank
I'm finding apps are being closed a lot and not utilising the ram.
So your not the only one, the software has a lot of jank.
Apparently the 108 build isn't the latest and theres a 202 build that's suppose to be the official release version and fixes things. Im going to wait and see if this drops in the next few days and see if it sorts it out

Theres a good chance pokeman hasn't been optimised for emui 9 or the kirin 980 yet
I also got from EE yesterday and am slightly under whelmed. However i haven't had any keyboard lag and the phone for the most part has been fast. The facial recognition had however been hit or miss, the 4k video is abysmal and FHD isn't too great either. My previous htc u12 seems to have a much better camera for both photo and video although the Huawei had more options. The most annoying thing so far is the slide down on home screen that brings up the search bar. Rules out any scrollable widget (Google schedule or bookmarks) s it keeps going to the search function while scrolling. Going to test the camera properly at a gig in the week alongside U12. If it isn't better, it's going back I'm sorry to say. It does charge very quickly though.
The charging is fantastic, super fast... The weird thing I done a benchmark with antutu it got the top device for benchmark literally number 1. So no. Doubt the power is within the phone it just has to be the software. Again sounds dumb but since doing the benchmark the phones been perfect. Very. Smooth no. Issues it's just so hit and miss sometimes it's perfect, other times slightly slow. I noticed with the wide angle camera it. Lags when changing too
Just switched from my old S8 and I'm absolutely stunned with sleek performance of M8 20 Pro. Got my black mob from ee. However once updated I've switched Nova on and removed some unused apps. As previously said I'd performed factory reset and check all once again.
Wait for the final os update and for apps to catch up. Keep the phone for 3-4 weeks and if your issues aren't resolved, just return it (guessing most of you have a 30 day return on it). Just stop whining like children about resolvable software issues.
I had the P20 Pro and loved the hardware but hated the software. Lots of small bugs and annoyances everywhere so after some months I could not stand it anymore. Very tempted by the Mate 20 Pro but am afraid I will hate the software once again

with EE as I opened a new contract I only have 14 days, im hoping it turns out well im loving it, its just the issues I mentioned above, its weird, because sometimes its amazing, since I done a stress test on an app and a benchmark its been performing better, its weird.
Sometimes its the best phone ive had, sometimes it just lags and feels like the worst.
I would love some updates before 14 days to reassure me as I do like this phone. I was more interested if others have the same issue
Same boat here pal love the phone but the software is a let down also a lot of stuff missing like AI cinema scan thing.

But we live in reality, where no phone comes up without bugs. For example, name me a phone that came out this fall and didn't need a patch after release to fix bugs?

Yes we also live in a reality where some people don't want to spend £1000 on a product that doesn't work properly, and lose the opportunity to either get money back or try something else on the off chance it might be fixed in the future.

Have to agree the phone is great but the missing software features (ai cinema, 3d scanning) are annoying. Neither are essential but when a product is launched as including them and a fair chunk of the launch event was devoted to showing how they work id at least expect them to be present!
I've been using the phone for 24 hours and my feelings are mixed. I love the design and size of the device, battery is amazing but the software seems like prerelease.
I've had random sound pops when the phone is on silent, can't use launchers properly with the gestures (stock launcher is terrible), no notification settings for gmail so I can't see how many unread emails I have, no thought on how notifications will show with the notch and zero customisation of the status bar to make more space, it's like the notch has wiped out a feature of android displaying your notifications, no video effects, seems bad to me that review units had it to sell the phone but its not on retail units. I know updates will come but they have to be checked by the carrier which could take a while. At this point I'm not sure whether to stick with it or admit the phone isn't for me.
