SD "HC" cards - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI All.....i just got off the phone with Viewsonic and the rep told me that she could only say for sure that an 8gb micro SD "HC" card would work with the G tablet.....she wasnt sure about a 16gb but knew a 32 gb would not work if it was "HC".....I wondered if folks here can verify that, and since most of the micro SD cards I see for sale are SD "HC".....if anyone could suggest a place to pick up a NON "HC" micro SD care at a good price....thanks a lot for all the help......

I use a 16 HC every day.

For the larger cards, I don't know that you can even get non "High Capacity" (HC) cards. The prices on these are generally not bad. The tech specs of the device say that you can expand up to 16GB through the SD slot, but that may be due to the shear fact that >16gb (aka 32gb) cards haven't be available to consumers without a ridiculous price since late last year. You can generally get 16GB SDHC cards for about $30 online.

SD HC cards
Meritline has real good prices on SD cards and other things. You might check there. Some things ship from China so it takes a while to get them. I have bought quite a few things from them.
I can't post the link but you can google it or bing it or just put 2 and 2 together.

Thanks for the help and suggestions gang...I really appreciate it........

I run a 32gb SD HC card in my gtab and it works fine. You won't have any problems running an HC card.

So no one can confirm the 32G SDHC? I ordered one this a.m. and then saw this thread. I hope it works!
<never mind - just saw newer post!>

x2 for uSDHC @32Gb. No issues so far. I'm just using the cheapest one I could get. ..

Cipher64,
32 gb cards have worked since last November. But I have heard of people who ran
across a certain brand or model card that didn't work.
The G-Tablet and Android are neat products -- but you will find there are lots of
oddities and flaws here and there......

32GB SDHC
Mine is on its way. I read somewhere that this should work fine.

anyone seen better, not ebay tho!
I don't want to be but am a bit suspicious of it...
Play.com are generally consdered okay, but I don't think there is such a thing as a MicroSD card that isn't SDHC - I know the specs on this product say that it is SDHC but where did they get that picture of a 4Gb MicroSD card that doesn't say SDHC on the case...?
As far as I can tell they've put up a pic which is not only of a different product but of a product that has never even been produced because it's physically impossible to make, i.e. a 'standard' 4Gb MicroSD.
I hate mock-up pictures when looking at buying something. Doesn't engender confidence when someone 'fakes' a pic of it rather than putting up a jpeg saying they haven't actually photographed the product yet.
didn't notice that, havent bought one myself, tho have 2 x 2gb cards that both come from play awhile back
Hi

16gb micro sd problem

I bought a new kingston 16 gb micro sd.
Now the card says it is not bigger than 961 MB.
I have format the card twice fat and fat32 but it is still 961 MB..
What do I wrong, or is the card wrecked?
Thnx
If that happened to me, I'd take it back where I got it for a replacement.

If you got it on ebay there is a 95% chance you bought a fake 16GB micro SD card. I stay away from memory cards offered on ebay. Its a very good chance that it actually is a 1GB card made to report that it has 16GB when it doesn't. If you did get it on ebay hopefully ebay or paypal will be able to help you get your money back.
FAKE MicroSD was made in Kingston factory

Yeah, I just read about that today too, and remembered this thread...I'm guessing the problem is more widespread than just Kingston, and is the source of many of the SD card issues people are having...just like the one above (including the "ghost-source" cards found on e-bay).
Here's an article with a slightly shorter explaination of the same report in that link chompx2 posted above.
So can anyone suggest a good class 6 card? I don't want to get one that turns out to be a fraud. And as bad as that would be, it would be even worse if I got one that worked as advertised and then a couple months later dies and loses all of my data.
Any suggestions for a card that wil be reliable for the long term?
Try the A-DATA 16GB Micro SDHC Class 6. I just got mine from Newegg.com.
I swapped out my Sandisk 8GB Class 2. I noticed a big difference on speed. I got mine for $54.86 including tax. Shipping was free. Mine does not come with a SD adapter but I already have a couple of them. Newegg does have Micro SD cards with the adapters. Just search around. Hope this helps.

Was it from ebay? SD cards are one of the items that I've started just paying the small premium to get from a known-good vendor (i.e. newegg, etc), just because of how commonly they're counterfeited and find their way into "unofficial" sales channels like e-bay and so forth
In December 2009 I purchased 2x 16GB microSD cards from eBay China for my new HD2. They took 2 1/2 months to arrive and when I got them they both only showed as 1GB and the writing on the cards were flaking. I was so upset. I could have gotten an 8GB microSD locally for less than the price of one of those fake 16GB microSD cards. At the time I had the original HD2 2GB in my phone, so even the 2 fake cards were useless.
I tried the Paypal resolution process, and it did not work. I never got back the US$80 I spent. The seller has disappeared.
In 2008 I bought 16GB microSD cards from eBay UK when they first came out at US$110 each and those were real (one was lost in a car, the other sold several months ago), so this time I was looking for a deal. I lost big time on those fake cards.
I bit the bullet and bought a single 16GB microSD Class 6 (also from eBay but from Topram US) to hold out until the 32GB microSDs came out (and now until they get faster and the price gets cheaper).
Stick to 'reputable' sellers on eBay, do not make a purchase based only on the best price, or take the risk of not getting what you paid for.
Here is a good seller with a good deal
I bought a 16gb class6 card from this US seller a year ago. It has been a great card and I have had no problems whatsoever.
Here is a link to a Kodak (Lexar) 16gb Class 4 card for BIN $40.24 with free shipping.
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Lexar-Media...-/400143735721?pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal
I very recently bought a 32GB microSD on ebay from a HK seller grandtechdigital.
The card was a fake. It does have a capacity somewhere around 8-16GB, though. I only ended up paying $31 US for the card, and the seller gave me a refund since it was not 32GB.
The trick with Ebay is to make sure you file your dispute in time if you are getting jerked around. If you wait too long, then you have no recourse. I could be wrong, but I think you only have 60 days.
Good Luck!
Does anyone know how to fix the bad card I have? I know that it needs to be reprogrammed to show the actual capacity. Right now, it looses files when I try to copy too much data to it.
Found another even better deal!!
Check out this one!! 16GB Topram Class 6!!

HD2 SD cards. (Recommendations).

Hi,
Can anyone recommend an SD card for the HD2 please? Possibly looking at an 8 or 16GB card. I feel its time to upgrade from my piddly little 2GB card that came with the phone.
Thx.
im with ya mate........ BUMP
Not really sure of the question!?
if you're asking which brand... ive always used sandisk, i have two 16gb (class 2) & an 8gb (class 6) card from sandisk, & have no problem with them, Kingston are also a quality brand.
i have had 2 cards die for no reason in about a 4 year period (always keep a spare now!), but this can happen.
if you are asking what size... go for the largest one you can afford.
@ RoN_HD2, i see you are in the uk, try CEX: http://www.cex.co.uk/search/index.php?stext=micro+sd&ispostback=1&mode=buy
you get a 1 year warranty, even on sd cards, if the card stops working within warranty period they will replace it.

Interesting discussion here.

Becareful buying micro sd cards on Ebay. I got scammed a few months ago. Bought a 32gb micro sd class 10 card for what I thought was a very good price. When I hooked it up to my computer with an usb adaptor it was recognized and showed 32gb in size. When I tried to move a large file (10Gig) it said "no disk space". It turned out to be an 8gb micro sd card labeled as a 32gb card. They installed a program in the micro sd card to show 32gb when you open it up in your computer. I got my money back through my credit card company and I emailed other buyers who bought them from this seller. Funny thing is everyone else thought it was fine and left good feedback for that seller until they tried adding more than 8gb into the card. I would stick with buying stuff like micro sd cards, usb flash drives, etc on Amazon, Newegg, or Frys. Its not worth trying to save $10-$20 or more on a $80 microsd card from Amazon.
Oh yeah I just read the feedback on one seller of the Memorette 32gb Micro SD SDHC CLASS 10 and I read a few "DOA", "not as advertised but refunded", "my computer can't read it". The rest who are happy probably didn't even try putting 30gb of data on the card yet. Again buyer beware.

i have tried the same thing, and the problem is not many is testing the cards.. i bught 3 class 6 before i got the real class 6 card, got my money back the other to times thow, but when buying from ebay always test the card as the first, there are many cheaters out there.
and yaa again the funny thing was that many said this was good, so i pick out 2 or 3 guys and ask them to try it, and guess what, they were cheated as well they just didnt knew it..
Do we know what maximum speeds the TF is capable of? I just read that thread posted so it got me wondering if its worth buying a class 10 card or not. I tried looking online but didn't really see anything about it. Is it safe to assume then that a class 10 will perform to its maximum when used in the TF?
Make sure you test the capacity of your micro sd card. Too many scams on memory cards from China. They will use a smaller capacity memory card and install a program in it to make it look bigger than it is. They use 8gb cards to make it look like it is 32gb. When you get your memory cards test it by adding large files to capacity.
Read the feedback left by a buyer. Many leave feedback before testing out their fake 32gb microsd cards LOL.
By my test it's a class 5, but the buyer is really good and fast!!! NICE EBAYER Member id davidegatto ( Feedback Score Of 62) Apr-22-11 02:50

For stuff like that, it's better to buy from a reputable vendor.
I got a 16GB class 6 card off of Amazon a little while ago to use in my Nook Color. I'll be using it in the TF. 16GB will be plenty of storage for me. Maybe when 32GB cards are a bit cheaper...
Sucks that tablets didn't go with full size SD card slots. I'd have much preferred that. 32GB SDHC cards aren't that expensive.

I hear you! a SDHC slot doesn't take up THAT much room. It's a shame they only included it in the keyboard dock I don't always want to carry around my dock with me
Also as a photographer, it's kind of a shame to not be able to plug in my camera's SDHC card directly into the tablet to view the pictures
Seen a fair bit about fake cards. Just as well I have paid through paypal using my credit card just in case.

MicroSD's aren't fast enough Slow SD cards really limit how many shots you can take in a row. I tend to do a lot of burst RAW shots and if the SD card isn't fast enough, the buffer will fill up too quickly
what class of SD are you using? People are purchasing class 10 microSDs to use with the transformers at reasonable prices.. still not fast enough?

30MB/s corresponds with a "Class 30" The class rating is just the guaranteed minimum speed in MB/s
No no no no never use memorette. I did, got a 32g card for 50 bucks. Put it in my mac to transfer 25g of stuff. Stopped unexpectedly after 20, after that it won't be recognized by either my imac or my phone, won't even allow me to format using terminal in the mac. Beware! U can get sandisk class 4 for 75 on amazon, it works pretty fast. I used it.

Just don't want to sound thick here, but my sandisk class 4 gave me speeds comparable to other cards class 6... Juz saying... Microsd classes are not as distinct as sdcard classes. Just my opinion, please no flaming!

I bought a SanDisk microSDHC 32GB class 4 for $63 and arrived today.
I did the test and the constant writing speed for 16+gb was 5.15mb/sec and the reading at 14mb/sec. More tests will follow.
Anyone have experience to use Patriot?
It comes with 5 years warranty.

[Q] 128gb micro sd

Hello all.
I searched through the forums and couldn't find anything so i thought i would ask here.
huawei says this supports 32gb external sd. i have a 64gb card in there now. i know this may seem like a stupid question, but would it support the 128gb micro sd cards that are out now?
would there be any issues reading the files on it?

It should work. I asked about 64gb cards and while looking online, found Sandisk's compatibility database. If you search on the HAM2, Sandisk indicates that micro SD cards upto 128 GB should work. http://pct1.sandisk.com/Default.aspx I'm looking forward to your post once you are using your new card.

How cheap is that? if just 20-40 dollars, then they are definitely fake sdcard. mean you can format/read/write all fine and show 128gb, but they can't hold 128gb content. Just be careful and test it throughly before store your valuable pictures on it.
Somebody give an update! Does the 128 work or what? lol? Take screenshot to prove it

I browsed eBay recently, and found several 128GB microSD cards.
Unfortunately, there is no single one which is not fake (at least, I have not found one).
Some of them are sooooo obvious fakes, that I'm getting shocked to see people buying them (some buyers simply don't have brains).
For instance, I saw several so called Samsung PRO 128GB microSD cards (with photos showing that this is anything but Samsung card, if you pay attention to these pictures). In fact, Samsung never released 128GB microSD card (they don't have such product on their web-site).
But some idiots do buy this junk (it's probably a 8GB card hacked to report itself as 128GB).
Recently, I bought Samsung EVO 64GB microSD on eBay (well, first 4 purchases from different sellers were a disaster - all were a counterfeit). One of the sellers was even a power seller (621 feedback, and not a single negative/neutral one).
I was a buyer #45 of that card, previous 44 buyers bought this junk card and left a positive feedback (either they don't know how to check an SD card, or they left a positive feedback too soon, and now they can not change it).
I was the first one who reported (tested with H2testw) that this card is a FAKE.
Still ... people continue to buy (they don't get bothered with a "COUNTERFEIT card" negative feedback).
Seriously?! If you don't pay attention to such feedbacks, you deserve to be scammed
Only the fifth one was genuine EVO 64GB microSD card.
95% of all microSD cards (64GB and larger) on eBay are fake. Make sure you know how to test it BEFORE you start to use it.
Added: genuine EVO 64GB microSD card works just fine in my HAM2 (at full capacity, though had to reformat it inside the phone - HAM2 did not like default exFAT format)
well said, especially the software (h2testw) to test the sdcard.
so after reading all that ebay buyer beware did you get a 128gb and stick it in your phone or not? lol
Well heck, it sure looks like someone would know by now. Wonder why they aren't saying.
If I don't change my mind I am ordering one of these phones tomorrow and will order a 128 gb card to go with it. If it doesn't work I am going to be like the other poster who said they ordered one and not post anymore. Just kidding.
there is a significant difference between 32GB and 64GB cards.
First is SDHC, second is SDXC.
Windows does not even want to format SDXC card using FAT32 type (only NTFS or exFAT are allowed).
Not all (old) devices are compatible with SDXC. Thus, they are stuck with SDHC, which is up to 32GB only.
But there is not big difference between 64GB and 128GB cards. Both are SDXC, after all.
Thus, if device can work with 64GB card (full capacity , not just 32GB), it HAS to work with 128GB either.
How can it not?!
PS: sorry, but I'm not going to spend $90 just to play with 128GB card. I have three 64GB SD cards, and it is enough for me. (I had 16GB card in my old HTC phone, and did not find a significant reason to switch to 32GB).

Did you ever receive this 128GB microSD card off eBay seller?
is it a real card? or is it a fake? (you can use h2testw on it, you don't need to write all 128GB on it, 16GB is enough - most fake cards are 8GB or smaller).
meanwhile, I periodically checking responses of other buyers to the same scammer where I bough my fake Samsung 64GB microSD card. He already sold more then 400 those cards, and only 6 people (including me) left a negative feedback telling that this is a pure fake card (one person tested the speed and reported that read/write speed is about 4x slower then claimed - exactly what I measured on my low quality fake card, but still, he left a positive feedback, because he did not bother to use h2testw).
I also saw that one poor fella bought 24 such cards (in a single purchase) couple of days ago. He just wasted his $500+ for that garbage. Unfortunately, eBay hides the information about buyers now. There is no way to contact this buyer and tell him a truth
I got the 128GB card to work in my Ascend Mate 2.
I did however have to format it to FAT32 (It would not recognise NTFS or EXFAT).
I used a program called guiformat.exe
I hope this helps.
There is a program you have to use to format the card into fat32 i believe. I had to use it for my 64gb to be compatible foe my previous note 2

This is why Amazon is your friend. If someone does you like that you can report them and 99.9% of the time Amazon will side with the buyer.

I would always and highly recommend one format the card in the phone. That way it always works best -- whether it's a phone, camera, etc...
E.g., That's what I did when I got my Sandisk Ultra 64GB C10/UHS-1 (Amazon-US). I stuck it in the HAM2, and it immediately offered to format it (FAT32) when I went to Storage, as it couldn't read it (ExFAT).
BTW, for those that don't know, a few things to always remember ...
- In all NT-based Windows (2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8), Microsoft has always defaulted to formatting NTFS and, in more recent years (Windows 7 and 8), ExFAT is offered for devices greater than 32GiB (33.8GB)
- FAT32 has always supported up to 128GiB (137GB), despite the default in Windows' tools, although it does result in a rather large cluster size for 64GB and 128GB devices
- Last time I checked, ExFAT is required for the SDXC branding, and some aspects of UHS performance guarantees, hence why >33.8GB cards come pre-formatted ExFAT
- Because of some of the design to NTFS, tied to the system that created it (long story, has to do with Access Control Entries, ACEs, for security), ExFAT is safer for mobile use
- Microsoft enforces the ExFAT patent far more often, whereas the FAT design has some prior art involved
Again, the easiest way is to just stick the card in and let the device format it. That way it's guaranteed to work with the device. I've just learned to trust this from years of dSLR cameras.
No device I've used in 64 or 128 capacities have given me the ability to physically format within the phone itself. Just reads "Blank card". Then when I tap "Format" it cycles the notification to "Checking card for errors."
Does this on the HAM2, Nvidia Shield, Samsung devices. How are people formatting within their devices?
Also, FWIW I have tested a Sandisk 64GB and 128GB Extreme card (the 128GB is now in the Shield as it's getting quite full of games).
Used "guiformat" (there are a couple other tools floating around) to format to FAT32 (also works on flashdrives and external HDDs).
It works. You can't re-format the card from within the HAM2 though (tested 64/128GB). If you hit "Erase SD Card" it will remount, show "checking for errors", then dismount. And it will continue to do so until you re-format it using a FAT32 program on another machine.
Also, Can't use App2SD but Link2SD works (got "pro" licenses for both).
FWIW both cards were correctly aligned by SDFormatter before being converted, and there are no issues in other devices.
