[Q] Thumb keyboard - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to use Thumb Keyboard for the Calkulins ROM and I understand that I need to move the apk over from data/app to system/app. I'm using ES File Explorer but I can't find those folders. Do I need to purchase Root Explorer?

OK. So I bought Root Explorer and moved the Thumb Keyboard apk over to system/app.
Still can't bring up Thumb Keyboard though.
Any ideas?

did you reboot? i have thumb keyboard and its working fine (TNT rom).

Yup, I rebooted but I'm using Calkulin's ROM.

It will work fine in Caulkulin's ROM. What you need to do is enter a text area on the G such as Market Search or whatever, and long press on the area where you'd type. A box will appear that will state Edit Text Input Method. That is where you can choose Thumb Keyboard.

I believe you also need to go into the thumb keyboard settings and check the box that will make it show up in the options.. at least, I did - mine was defaulted to unchecked...

This is not needed when you copy the keyboard app in the /system/app folder.

This worked. I previously did the long press in the browser text box but it didn't work for some reason. Thanks!

good for u really impressed with the developer. Replies emails in a flash and really helpful. Love the app.

Yea, I really like it so far. Much better than regular keyboard.

1) Everything can wake up except menu button.
2) Camera button is now activated by a 3 second press
3) Settings -> Language & Keyboard -> Untick Default Input Settings
Hope this helped =)
My camera button wont open up cam app. Hold for 10 sec now

For the annoying language bar, you can opt for a better option. Use swiftkey or Smart keyboard and it will replaced the language bar with text prediction box. A lot more useful.
For me the most annoying thing is the blue theme that has got even worse and still can't be changed!!!
Other than that I'm pretty happy with the update. I might not say that in a few weeks once I've tried everything but for now I'm happy.

Cheers I can confirm this works
I've gone with anysoftkeyboard which is free and doesnt put anything on your screen.
In the 1.6 version of gmail - you could press shift+s and then select the text you wanted to copy into the clipboard.
Now that 2.1 has been released pressing shift+s just makes a cursor appear, which is fine if the x10 mini/pro had a trackball but it doesn't.
Does anyone know how to copy and paste in 2.1 gmail?
EDIT (2010,11,10) - Found Solution:
If you press and hold the shift button while selecting your text on the screen it copies to the clipboard just fine
(obviously this is only a solution if you have a mini pro)

Actually, after a bit of searching i've found the solution to this.

I will update my original post.
one annoyance would be that I have to use Roadsync for Microsoft Exchange?
does anyone know how to use/install default Android 2.1 email client for exchange?
is it possible with anysoftkeboard to have an on-screen keyboard with multikeys (I mean [abc] [def] [ghi] ...)? because a whole screen keyboard in portrait mode is too small, that's why I have a minipro!

Well I am talking about copying content from existing email while you are reading it. Futhermore I have mini, so no shift button, but then most of the android phones dont have qwerty so how the hell this works in general for others?

I'm not sure what you mean.. But in the gmail app you can copy text from any message (either a received, a draft or already sent) with the method that was described.
Again, i know this doesn't really help you in any way because you don't have a keyboard :-(

This works...sort of.
I now have native exchange support on my X10 mini pro.
I used root explorer to move /system/app/SemcEmailSmall.apk to my sdcard
then copied the email.apk from the link above into /system/app/ and set permissions to rw-r--r--
so far so good. Doesn't look like there is an option for calendar sync but at least exchange mail works.

Thanks but when I try to install it I get "Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE]"
@l00k, does the contacts sync work at least?
You need to get rid of the other file first as per my other post. It won't install through app manager

gyration Keyboard

For everyone's information: I just tried my gyration keyboard and it worked just fine - nice smaller keyboard. thought you all might like to know.
do you have a link to a product page?
http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&ke...x=aps&hvadid=2840572641&ref=pd_sl_nczgy5tro_b
those cost WAY too much for my blood
I can't get mine to work under VEGAn-Tab... what ROM are you running?
I have tried to get the gingerbread and swiftkey keyboards to work, but for whatever reason am not able to turn off the TnT keyboard.

Are you switching on the swiftkey (or alternative) keyboard under settings --> Language & keyboard? Then, when you get ready to type in any field (you'll still see the default keyboard), do a long press with your finger until you see a pop up that says Input method. Select input method and then you get another pop up that allows you to select the keyboard of your choice. Select your alternative keyboard and it will then appear for you.
I was using TNT lite 2.2 - I just plugged in the usb transceiver and it worked. I had it from a splurge earlier and used it with presentations - if the dongle were smaller it would be very useful.

[Q] Can't activate third party keyboards

I can't seem to get my g tab to activate any third party keyboards from the market. When I go into settings -> languages and keyboards, then try to click the check box next to the keyboard name, a warning comes up saying it might be a keylogger. I click on activate, and nothing happens, and the keyboard is not listed in the input methods menu. When I go imto options for Better Keyboard and select activate, settings force closes.
I am running tent lite 4.4 and trying to use better keyboard, thumb keyboard, and swiftkey. Any ideas? Thanks!

With TNT and some of the other roms you will have to install the APK for the keyboard to the system folder.
You can find more information at this post:

Thanks! Where on my tablet is that .apk file stored so I can copy and paste it over?

how to switch keyboards on CM7?

exactly as the title says, i cant figure out how to switch to a different keyboard,
there's no option under the language and keyboard settings to actually select one of the other keyboard i have installed, any ideas??
I'm on cm7 also and only have one keyboard selection but I install swype beta and never looked back...do you want swype or the old sammy keyboard? Swype was pretty easy to install but I'm not sure about the old keyboard from froyo rom...idk if there is a work around to get it on cm7? You may be out off luck for that keyboard?

Are you looking to actually just select a new keyboard or install a totally new one
If selecting make sure it checked in language and keyboard settings and long press in any text box, choose input method and select the desired keyboard. thats how I did it

[Q] Ultimatum ROM keyboard

I've just installed Ultimatum beta 4 (and now I see RC1 is out) and so far haven't gotten alternate keyboards to work. I prefer Swype or FlexT9, and I go into Settings->Language and input to change my keyboard. While I can select FlexT9, the Android keyboard can't be unselected (it's selected and greyed out). When I go to type something I have to use the Android keyboard.
(I would've posted this in the Ultimatum thread in the development forum but I follow the advice about searching forums first and have only needed to post three times previously)
You should be able to pull down the notification when typing and you can switch.
Post some screenshots of settings.
When I type an email, there's no dialog or notification to pull down.
I've attached a screenshot.
