media will not play...wtf.... - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok i believe that this question has been asked but it was not anwsered so i am gonna ask again with a twist. ok, ever since i had rooted my vibrant i have noticed that for some odd reason unless i reset my phone it will not play any media files. it says that (cannot play this media file) now this is for both audio and video. now after i pull out the battery (cause its quicker then a shutdown) it seems to be ok. someone once said that you have to make it rescan the sd card, which does not work nor would it affect video files from online (i.e. youtube) so i would appreciate any thoughts on this.

I have the same issue but I am not rooted but it has been since I upgraded to 2.2 Some times it will work fine for a few days then others only a few hours. The only solution is to reboot the phone. It will not play any music or mp3 ringtones or video local or youtube. I have reset my phone to stock with no installed software but that did not help either. If any one has any fixes for this please reply.
Thanks

I have the same issue. I've been rebooting everyday so the media file can play.

Problems playing MP3 files.

FYI.... I did search for music topics and as usual, the search feature was no help. I keep noticing after adding music on my SD card, that many files always come up as "cannot read file," and this happens regardless of the app I'm using to try and play the track. I also have other MP3's on the phone that play with no problem. I have checked the details of the files in question to make sure they are indeed mp3's and they are, so any clues as to what is going wrong? I feel that this should be such a simple task, but I keep hitting a wall. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
Have you removed mediascape out of curiosity?
There are several system apps which are requiered to play media files, if you have rooted your phone, ensure that apps like "Multimedia Storage", "DRM Protected Content Storage" and "Download Manager" aren't frozen/removed (ie. using Titanum Backup) from your phone.
It seems that all the above mentioned apps are installed and running fine. Also, I did not remove mediascape. I have been using that as well as the winamp beta, but more than 50% of my MP3's come up as file cannot be read and can now be deleted. What apps are you guys using to listen to music files and how are you installing your music to your phone? I can't figure this out..
Thanks for the responses by the way..

Have you tried the micro-SD card in another reader or PC - sounds like it might be a corrupted / dodgey card to me...

All of my music is suddenly "Unknown Artist"

So, one bright morning suddenly all my 300 songs are labeled 'unknown artist'. Funny thing is, that when I connect the phone to the computer and/or use the sdcard in a cardreader, it's ok - all the ID3 tags are full and all the data is there, but on the phone it's all 'unknown'.
Funny thing is that I tried 3 different music apps, and all show 'unknown artist'.
I googled it and only found stuff relating to WMA files, but I don't use WMA, only MP3.
I have no idea why this happened, it was ok with this exact configuration a day ago. Anyone experienced this? Knows how to fix? etc?
(using HD2 with Runnymede rom in sig).
Try to restart. If not working, clear those music player data so it can rescan your music.
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
Eventually what solved it was that I converted all the tags to Id3v2.1 using MP3Tag. I just selected all the songs and hit 'save' which made it 'resave' all the songs with the newer protocol.
Thanks for the help
As Ambious Said, that worked great Sorry to revive an old thread but just sayin thanks for the quick fix (Not to mention an awesome program now), my phone's been giving me nothing but issues today and that was driving me nuts, but as usual XDA to the rescue
Also wanted to bump this old thread to say thank you! I was getting all my music as "unknown artist" and resaving them through MP3Tag fixed it.

Stock Music Player not Finding Music on SD Card

Ok so the Stock music player will not find the music I have on my SD Card for some odd reason. I installed PowerAmp just to check if it was an SD Card issue but that finds and reads the Music just fine so I really have no idea what is going on. Also had this thing installed on my HTC Vivid and the music is found, same with the Atrix 2 I have. So it seems it is just this phone, any ideas would be helpful. So far I have tried UnNamed Rom, Perception, and Lidroid...all three exact same results. Oh yea same with Video's as well. I can explore to them all using a file explorer but they don't show in the stock Video/Music Player, also photos from other phone does not show up in gallery.
That is odd. Mine has never had an issue finding everything.
Use the google market to download a free song. Then throw all your music in that folder and then see if it picks it up.

Did you accidentally add a .nomedia file somewhere on the SD card?
I've had that happen before on the Infuse.
Just checked and there is no .nomedia file anywhere on the card and I also had just gotten done reformatting the card and moving files back to the card.

Just did that and the irony is that it did add it to the google music player but not to the stock music player...Nothing is showing in the Stock Music player. It is also randomly does Media Scanning. I am starting to wonder if the actual SD Reader is out of the box busted. I bought this thing through Amazon, can I just take it to an AT&T store and get a replacement through them or should I go directly through Samsung or am I stuck requesting a new phone from Amazon?
I was able to get the music noticed but I had to move it to the Internal Memory...Not the solution I need but works temporarily unless anyone has any better ideas.
Just figured out how to find out if it is hardware or software related...Gonna flash Miui and if it still has issues than it is most def. hardware considering this card works perfectly fine in the 4 other phones I have.
Well that pretty much just confirmed my suspicions of the card reader having issues considering it is doing the same exact thing in Miui Rom that is using a totally different Stock Music Player. Now I get to have the fun of figuring out where and how to get a new one.
So new information that i thought i ought to share for anyone having issues like this. i had a bunch of backup apks on the card and some where down the line one of them got corrupted so for some reason this phone pickes up on it when all the others would just skip it and continue scanning for media this one stopped. so if you run into this issue try deleting your backed up apps or before doing that back them up to your pc than bring them back 1 by 1 until you find the culprit.

[Q] ics passion music problems

sorry if this has been posted before i really dont know what im doing buti have ics passion the newest build? and im having a problem with the music player it works for awhile and then it just goes in to "cannot play music at this time" and nothing works trying to get it to work and then i notice i have 5 of the same song and non of them play is there a fix to this or is there one on the way thnx
Yes it has but since this is your first post, we'll let it slide.
Go into Manage Apps->Musicplayer and clear cache and data. Reboot and Bam!! there you go.
Also don't forget for the future that your External_sd is now called EMMC just in case you need to direct something to your extsd card like 3rd party music player, camera,...
jyound New
it didnt work now it only shows one song but it still says it cant play the track you requested! am i the one person that had to get the busted samsung vibrant!

This happens to me as well and this is how I solve it.
First, force exit the music player (I use long-press on the back button).
Second go to manage apps > music player > clear data and clear cache
third restart music player and go to settings and refresh music from google music
Give it a little bit. It take mine about 20 minutes to complete the refresh but I have about 16GB of music on my phone.
This should solve it but for good measure, I reboot into recovery, clear cache, clear dalvik, and fix preferences.
Let me know if this helps.
That EMMC threw me off for the longest time. I bounced off a couple ICS ROM's before I realized the external was mounting fine, lol. They should put that in the OP of ICS ROM's
i tried clearing the data and cache and rebooted
i did everything and nothing i even tried to delete all music off of it and putting it back on and it gives me the same message immediately am i cursed?
is there nothing i can do
ive tried all of the above and still nothing is there anything i can do i really like using my phone as a music player its kinda important to me should i just switch to an iphone?
Have you tried another music player?
Install winamp. If it works, then try reinstaling google music.

ive done it all
ive tried win amp and something else and when i tried those it just never played the song and there would be like 6 of the same song and non of them would play
Is the file type .mp3? If so it should play just fine.
Can you play the songs from the file browser? Try using "file explorer" or "root explorer", navigate to the folder that contains the music files and see if it plays from there. Sometimes after a fresh flash I need to do this to get music player to find the rest of my music folders.
Goodluck!
p.s. If you break down and buy an iphone send the vibrant to me dogg!
Try PowerAmp. It doesn't rely on the Android music scan or library. This eliminates the problem with tracks appearing multiple times. It also uses its own codecs and supports more formats.

I agree with the post above!
I had the "cannot play music" issue and tried the clearing of caches etc. nothing worked so I downloaded Power Amp and have been happy ever since.

music not playing, tried several players already

For some reason my S3 no longer plays any of my music. It can detect the files just fine, even the ones I ripped directly from CDs in windows, but when I load up my music player and hit the play button it appears to just scan all the files in the open folder ,as in I can literally see the song names get loaded one after another real fast... as if all my music was only 0.001 seconds long, so it sort of plays them but they're all that short and no sound comes out
anyway I've tried several players and its always the same. Any advice would be great, i'm on stock JB, never rooted.
Take one MP3 file place on sd card .
Open My Files navigate to this MP3 open it chose player .
Fails backup data and factory reset .
You dont have sound muted or turned down low
??

Posted on XDA answer to exact same question .
Had the same problem a week ago,
I went to application manager in settings,
And cleared the data and cache of media storage, then rebooted.
That seemed to fix the issue
