[Q] Enterprise Wi-fi connection problem - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok, so my wifi works great, however, when i try to connect to the wifi on my schools campus, it says networks are available, but then none show up in the settings.
my school uses long range Xirrus access points that use enterprise encryption. i am able to connect using my android phone which is running 2.2, but no access point show up for me to connect to on my GTab.
i downloaded wi-fi analyzer and all the APs show up, typically with great signal strength. i find it strange that the GTab's wifi card can pick up the signal but it will not allow me to connect to the APs. i would like to fix this problem so that i can use my GTab at school!
im running TnT Lite 4.3.2 with Clemysyn's Kernel v. 9.

This is likely a stock issue -- enterprise encryption = ? MSCHAP v2? TKIP? PEAP? Any certificates required?
If you get the details, you might want to pass this onto Viewsonic CS, although I suspect that they will say that this device is not meant for Enterprise networks. As for TNT Lite, it follows stock as far as Wifi (with the exception of ad-hoc, of course). I'm not sure of mods like VEGAn have better support for Enterprise networks, however -- anyone have any idea?

they use WPA2-Enterprise encyption with PEAP authentication. no certificates are manually added, it just requires username and login at initial connection.
sadly i never tried connecting before i flashed your rom, but it sounds like you are correct. i will definitely pass this on to ViewSonic CS.

***HOWTO: Internet Sharing over WiFi*** (Updated 08-Nov-2007)

I have figured out how to use Internet Sharing over WiFi, which essentially makes my Hermes an Access Point.
Do the following:
1) Open Settings->Internet Sharing. Enable IS for Bluetooth PAN.
2) Change HKLM\Comm\ConnectionSharing\PrivateInterface to "TIACXWLN1" (for the Hermes). It should currently be "BTPAN1".
3) Open Settings-> Connections -> Wi-Fi. Select Network Adapters tab. Click IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wi-Fi.
4) Enter IP address 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Click OK.
5) Select Wireless tab. Add New.. to add the Network name for your ad-hoc network (I prefer "adhoc")
6) Set the client computer to use the same ad-hoc network. Client will receive an IP address from the device (don't need to manually set the IP).
And it works!
Interestingly, while IS was enabled, wifi stayed on and connected when the phone went to standby mode. Normally wifi turns off to save battery during standby. I imagine this will drain your battery in a hot minute, so bring your charger.
UPDATE (28-Oct-2007): Attached are some more beta releases of patched intshare.dll. I've created versions for most of the adapter names people have requested. By renaming this dll to intshare.dll and copying it to \Windows, Internet Sharing will use TIACXWLN1 (or whichever dll you use) when Bluetooth PAN is selected. I.e., if you use this, you will not need to make the registry changes above.
This will handle the registry part, but of course you'll still need to set up the ad-hoc network on your own.
UPDATE (03-Nov-2007): I've attached a beta version of the patched Internet Sharing app. It's in its own cab so it won't overwrite your existing IS. This app replaces Bluetooth PAN with 802.11b/g Wireless Ethernet. No registry hacking required. This app is well suited to replace the MS version on cooked ROMs.
If you use an adapter other than TIACXWLN1 then replace intshare.dll just as before.
UPDATE (08-Nov-2007): Attached is v 0.9.1 of the Internet Sharing Mod. This update addresses the 10 minute disconnect bug most people have experienced.

I can't believe this! Waiting for this since i got my Hermes. Thx for this development. This is the greatest effort since Hard-SPL and WM6 upgrade.
Now I can connect my XBOX360 to the Internet without starting my PC and sharing it over PC-LAN. USB-Charger is at the Front of the XBOX360.
I hope it will work.
You said the Max-Connections can be reworked. Does this mean it will support Ad-Hoc AND WLAN-Routing to many recepients too?

not sure what you mean by replacing the connection. With ICS, obviously you cant share your connection over BT while sharing it over WIFI. and you can normally use wifi to connect to another computer by using an ad-hoc connection and manually entering a private ip on the same subnet for each computer.

Were you able to use more than one client connected?
I'll admit..when I saw this my first thought was that this was another "How can I do internet sharing via wifi" and the title was just misleading..instead I find myself very impressed with your accomplishment. Very well done! As a "hack" untill you figure out how to mod the dll which I'm sure is only a matter of time now that you have pointed everyone in the right direction, you can export the registry key for both the Bluetooth adapter and the Wifi one and "import" whichever one you want to use at a given time...it's not pretty but it should work.
Some issues of concern would be that the AP is wide open and can be connected to by anyone with no password etc...the bluetooth pairing allowed some security but using the wifi doesn't have the same shared key protection...or am I missing something obvious?

When I used it I was only able to get one client to connect, however there is a reg value, HKLM\Comm\BTPAN1\Parms\MaxConnections that may help if it is changed from 1 to 2 (or whatever). But I haven't tried.

this work actually stemmed from my trying to share my phone's tethered connection with another client. by which i mean, my laptop is in a cafe online through my 8525 using Internet Sharing(IS) over usb. and i want to provide a connection, through wifi or ethernet, to my gfriends laptop. this actually isnt normally possible b/c WM IS and XP Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) both have 192.168.0.1 hard-coded as the gateway IP. so the phone uses that IP to give my laptop a connection, and my laptop tries to use the same IP with ICS. anyway, it fails because of this. i was able to get past that problem by going into Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Network Adapters -> Remote-NDIS and manually setting 192.168.1.1. This lead to the breakthrough with regards to wifi. prior to that id been trying all different ways to have the wifi adapter spoof the bt pan, however i could never get dhcp to assign an IP to the client. this is what it took.
and it's great that DHCP does in fact work here. it makes it dead easy for any arbitrary client to get online. just join the adhoc network as if it were an AP.
anyway, security-wise the ad-hoc network can use WEP or WPA, so security doesn't have to be a problem. the procedures for doing this are the same as normal.
and i haven't tried that reg key to enable multiple clients. but it looked like an obvious choice. i'll leave that as an exercise for the reader

I ran into same issue with XP internet sharing. Another workaround is to have a linux machine do NAT( since you can specify the IP used there) to whatever other clients you want and have it connected via bluetooth dun or bluetooth PAND (which is the solution I use to give internet to my replaytv and a couple of laptops in the house)...my edge connection is my main internet feed..a cacheing proxy such as wwoffle, squid of my personal preference "polipo" helps alot to when using gprs/edge etc since it helps with the latency.

thats what i wanna know , could i use my hsdpa connection via wifi to my psp?
I'll do a tutorial when i'm at home again. Maybe somebody with know-how can make a cab-file v1.0 for this "WLAN-Modem hack".

yes, your xbox and your psp should be able to connect just fine, as long as they support ad-hoc wireless (which i imagine they must). this hack will allow the phone to act like any normal wifi access point. the only difference is the client has to be seraching for ad-hoc networks in addition to normal APs.
the difficulty with creating a cab file at this point is that the registry setting is not persistent. that is, it must be set each time you enable IS. the setting is lost every time IS starts. this is why i am trying to patch the dll - so wifi will work as a normal, additional option in Internet Sharing (and hopefully this should be ready soon).

I would LOVE to get this working on my TMO WM6 Wing, but I'm having issues:

Check - but is the T1ACXWLN1 device specific? If so, how can I find the interface ID on my device?

For me it's settings -> connections -> network cards, but I don't have an IEEE 802.11 listed. I connected to an existing AP, and found that my 'SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter' does receive a DHCP address, so I tried changing it to 192.168.1.1...

Found this and set up my WING-FI network.

The client PC connects to WING-FI, but never receives an IP address...
What could I be doing wrong? Is it the hardware ID in the registry? I've created the network with WPA, then after the connection problems, with no security - but still no change.

Very likely the string TIACXWLN1 needs to be something different. Check HKLM\Software\WZCSV\Parameters\Interfaces\
There should be a key there with the name of your wireless adapter. It should end in "1".
And if not there, it should also be visible under HKLM\Comm\
Let us know how it works out.
EDIT: I just noticed you typed T1ACXWLN1. The string must be TIACXWLN1. That's "i" not one.

I own a PPC6700 as well and I was able to get it working no problem other than the fact that our wireless adapter is not the same as the one mentioned. The reg edit is the same it's just the first network adapter in the list when you create the network settings.

[Q] G1 wifi tether doesn't show up

I start wifi tether for root users on my G1.
I connect to it from my netbook.
Problem:
I don't see it in the list of wifi networks on my dell streak.
I cannot connect to the G1 wifi tether from my dell streak.
I am baffled.
I don't know where to start to trouble shoot this.
How Can I be writing this from my windows 7 netbook on the G1 wifi tether, but I can't connect to it on my streak.
The streak has no sim card in it right now.
I've got the same issue with Wireless Tether App.
Streak (unrooted 2.2) can't see the SSID broadcasting from a Moto Bravo (rooted 2.1). Ipod Itouch sees and connects fine.
I also tried Barnacle tether to no avail.
Any other suggestions?
Check that the source of the wifi network is not using a channel that the Streak does not support or isn't using. Go to wifi settings and then tap Menu->Advanced and select Regulatory domain. I believe that AT&T locked Streaks only work on channels 1-11.

What country/carrier are you in/on?
For instance the AT&T Streaks are, I believe, limited to channels 1-11, so check the device you are connecting to make sure it's not using a channel your Streak can;t see.

I followed through with your steps instead, failed to comprehend the channels reference.
Anyway, yes I did gothrough the different channels of the host phone. 1, 10,9,8,7,6, and 5. I stopped there. SHould I proceed?
Here's some info on WiFi channels
Since the US normally only uses channels 1-11 I thought that your issue might be that the device you are trying to see was using channel 12-14, which would prevent you from connecting. If you have confirmed that the device is using a channel from 1-11 then that's not the issue.
Try setting up the device that is acting as the access point with a different type of security and make sure that it is broadcasting the SSID.
You might try WiFi Analyzer from the market and see if it sees the access point.

I don't understand why Streak would not see the SSID when the ITOUCH and computer can.
I even tried running the Wireless Tether App by way of Blutetooth, and the STREAK won't even see it.
I don't have my GSM card in the Streak, but that would not be an issue would it?
The STREAK detects and runs off of my home WIFI fine with no GSM card.
I'm stumped.
Anyone else running a different Tether App besides Wireles Tether and Barnacle that the STREAK can run off of?

Andoid does not support ad hoc networks yet. there are mods yopu can make to do this. It is included on StreakDroid 1.8.1.

I too am having this same issue with an Eris phone and Dell S7.
My wife has the Incredible and the S7 sees her wifi "3G Hot Spot" just fine.
I also for the sake of getting connected tried a Blutooth PAN and that failed.
Is there a similar method or application for a rooted android as there is for the Incredibe? If this can be duplicated then problem solved.

[Q] New question... Do any of the ROMs support Proxy wifi settings?

I didn't get much response on my previous question about proxy support for the stock rom, so I was wondering if any of the alternate roms include it. I would very much like to have access to the internet at work, but the school district requires loggon through a proxy server (content filter) before you can access the WiFi network. I realize that port restrictions that the district places on the network will likely prevent me from accessing the market, gmail, or voice search. But at school, I would most like to just access flash based educational website for kids.
Any thoughts on this? The district is moving toward ipads as the tablet platform of choice because of the lack of proxy support with Android. But the ipads lack of support for flash really hinders what I want a tablet to be able to do for me. (Yes, I want my cake and eat it too!) Is this too much to ask?
I connect my gtab to my schools wirelesss that is using 802.1x EAP for wireless security. I had to install a mod that changed the settings app and allowed advanced wireless settings. That allowed me to put in the authentication type, domain name, password, etc. Once connected, I ran a mod that set it back to the original settings apps. I asked in your previous post as to whether you are having problems actually getting on the wireless or once on, you can't bet by the web filter. We use websense here. Once I got on the wireless, there was an websense authentication dialog that popped up. Once I put my domain\username and password in, it works fine.
It won't even let me connect to the district network because I don't have anywhere to enter the proxy settings in the wifi set up box.
Assuming you have Pershoot's or Clemsyn's Kernel (or one of the better ROMs), you need something like ASProxy. I use it at work all the time and it does the job. There is a free program called TransParentProxy which is more limited but does allow you to quickly test settings without spending any money.
I do not see a proxy settings in the wpa_supplicant.conf file. My understanding of this file is it lists all possible settings settings available for Wi-Fi configurations.

Previously I've only needed to access a proxy after connecting to the network. Perhaps you have run into a problem getting connected to your network using the tablets Wi-Fi settings manager. So connecting to the network might be your first step and then connecting to the proxy your 2nd.
I found the free Wifi Advanced Config Editor (WifiACE on the Android Market) to have a GUI to easily configure advanced Wi-Fi settings not found in the tablet's settings. I realized when trying to set up an advanced configuration I needed to create a new connection in the tablets WiFi Settings with the security of NONE to avoid having some of the wrong settings configured by default. Then using the information from the my network admin I manually set the options via the WifACE GUI, un-checking NONE, and bingo I got connected.
I recommend WiFiACe with one caveat: make sure you have a way (like adb) working and know how to backup, delete, and restore files and that you make a back up of all wpa_supplicant.conf files on your tablet.
My caveat comes because my first reboot after I got connected to the Enterprise network at work the Wifi would not start or run. It would only display "error" and do nothing. Several reboots later it still wouldn't start and without Wi-Fi running there is no way to make configuration changes either through WifiACE or the tablets Wi-Fi Settings. I had to use the adb shell to delete the newly configured wap_supplicant.conf and create a new connection via the tablets Wi-Fi Settings and then make the necessary changes through WifiACE. Once that was done it ran and connected. Now after multiple reboots it still works and connects. Without the ability to delete the file I'm afraid I would have had to re-flash my tablet to get Wi-Fi to work again.
I don't think you've ever mentioned what ROM you're running. If you're running stock, you will have a very difficult time, in fact it may be impossible. If you're running a different mod, there's hope. Now, assuming that you got ClockWordMod (CWM) installed, you can probably be successful in at least connecting to the wireless. If you don't have CWM installed, here's a good place to start:

This will give you the zips for installing a differernt wireless config tool that will allow you to put in the 802.1x EAP config. Once you can successfully connect, you back out the the tool you installed.

[SOLVED] touchpad 802.11X enterprise+certificate wifi connectivity

One of the corner cases it seems HP did not design into webOS is the ability to auto negotiate a full 802.11X connection. I managed to fix this though and my touchpad is happily connected to our office wi-fi and I figure anyone else trying this might want to check out the workaround I managed.
When I attempted to configure my touchpad to connect to an office/enterprise access point, I hit a brick wall where after completing all the required steps. It was able to use the current user credentials and get to the access point itself, but failed out with a "warning, no certificate is found for this network, please contact your network administrator" type of message.
Well of course no one in our IT group had ever so much as seen WebOS and ultimately I was left to fend for myself.
The goal here is to successfully transfer the (normally auto-retrieved) 802.11X signing certificate to the touchpad so that it can properly connect to your corporate/enterprise wireless network. On other devices such as android this seems to all be automated, but on the touchpad a significant amount of manual arm-wringing was needed to get it to all work together.
Step 1: Getting a root security certificate for your company.
There are a few guides out there for various operating systems/devices which you can use. Since my office machine was windows 7, thats what I have direct experience with.
Win7 Has a built in certificate management tool, but it is not listed in any of the menus. To get to it, enter certmgr.msc into the run panel and it will open up this handy dandy little tool.
Once you have that tool open, look into the root certificate authority folder and find your company's enterprise certificate. Hopefully it will be fairly easy to spot, i.e. if you work at company with domain X, you should see something like "X Enterprise CA".
Right click this certificate and select "All Tasks->Export" which will bring up a wizard with a few different certificate formats. After much trial and error, I found that the only one the touchpad seemed to natively understand was the "Base-64 encoded X.509". Finish the export with a file name and you can find it in your default user folder.
Step 2: Transfer this file to your touchpad
This one is a no brainer, just connect the touchpad via usb to your machine where you have this file, and drag it over.
Step 3: Importing the new certificate
All you need here is any webos file manager capable of opening a file. I used Gemini File Manager, but several free ones are also available and should work.
Open the file manager app on your touchpad, and run that certificate file. This will open a certificate manager tool on the touchpad and prompt you to trust this new certificate. Once you select to trust it, it will be brought into the system and available to use for 802.11x authentication.
Step 4: Connecting to the network
At this point all you should have to do is connect to the office wireless that was giving you trouble before, and now after giving all your authentication info it should successfully connect and offer full connectivity
It seems a little convoluted but it is awfully nice to have the touchpad be fully on-line and available around the office and you only have to do it the one time, successive connections should all just work.
I've tried this at my University, but it doesn't work for my exact situation. Hopefully it will work for others too. Kudos for figuring it out! As for me, apparently WPA2 Enterprise PEAP MSCHAPV2 is a no go until the WebOS team will update/fix it....
I managed to get connected to my MS corp wireless, but will actually see if I have network connectivity a bit later (and update this thread).
its given me full connectivity here (I'm writing this on my touchpad on the enterprise WiFi right now). Its also worked for several other people here lucky enough to score one as well.
the biggest sticking point was getting the right certificate in the right (touchpad working ) format. Once I managed to get that file simply sending it around helped everyone else here get going in a couple minutes vs a couple hours it took when I was trying to sort it all out.
We use 802.1x at work without server certs. Just peap and mschap v2. I haven't had any luck connecting though. Anyone else been able to?

I tracked down the ARM wpa_supplicant package here: http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/armel/wpasupplicant/download
And the libreadline.so.6 package here:
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/armel/libreadline6/download
.DEB packages just have .TAR files inside them so I extracted what I needed using 7Zip and used WebOSQuickInstall to copy the files to the TP.
Even after following the other directions though, I consistantly get an error saying:
Failed to connect to wpa_supplicant - wpa_ctrl_open: No such file or directory
Not having much luck...
what's odd is our network looks like it does have peap set but with this certificate its working on the touchpad just fine.
it uses our exchange login info with a slightly off domain but even that has not thrown it.
The exact network configuration visible in the windows properties for the wireless link here is as follows:
Security: WPA2-Enterprise
Encryption: AES
Network Authentication: PEAP
Validate Server Certificate
Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAPv2) (Automatically use windows login/pass/domain)
Fast Reconnect
I haven't had luck with anything so far.
Is anyone willing to make a patch to fix the MSCHAPv2 problems? I'm willing to donate to your cause if I can my TouchPad to connect to my school's wireless, as it's essentially useless right now.
The network here uses WPA-Enterprise (not WPA2), and PEAP with password authentication only (no cert needed - as far as I'm aware it doesn't issue one to the phone).
I managed to get the TP to say "no network with that name and security method" found when I had the protocol set to IEEE801X, it doesn't do it when I set it to WPA-EAP though.
Essentially, using (what I believe to be) the exact same settings that work with my SGS2, doesn't work with the TouchPad.
It looks like at best the enterprise stuff is kinda half baked. If you need a certificate, webos is capable of *using* one, but not generating it. If its non certificate based, it seems to just fail out entirely.
Have you guys who are having the failures had luck with other devices like laptops etc? if so, what are the settings used to establish that successful connection? It seems like the touchpads are *capable* of mantaining peap/mschapv2 connections, as that is the setup my office uses, but for some reason without the certificate requirement it just is glitching out and won't establish the connection in the first place

My Windows7 laptop and my WP7 Samsung Focus both securely connect to the network fine. My TouchPad is the first device I've ever heard of having issues connecting.
Hell, my roommate even has his PS3 and XBOX connected.

Installed the WiFi Certificate but still no luck.

Just updated (manually) to the leaked 3.0.3 version and it's resolved the Enterprise Wifi connection issue.
Confirmed, my WiFi works. Enterprise mschapv2 PEAP without certificate. 3.0.3. Now I can leave my laptop at home and use splashtop if I need anything.. *rock on*
I can also confirm that the certificate issue has been solved in 3.03, but now I can't set a proxy, has anyone been able to?

I've just checked that I can connect to an eduroam connection configured this way at a UK university, which the TouchPad couldn't do before.

awesome news, I will be testing mine out today when I get to school.
update: I was able to connect at my school, but I had to uncheck the cert box to get it to work.
Yup, i removed my custom certificate on 3.04 and re-joined the access point. It had some new options about authentication built in and sure enough just worked, no issues.
Looks like the little crazy work-around won't be needed anymore

Windows 7 - ad hoc connection

Hi,
I created ad hoc connection on my Windows 7. But my galaxy s3 can't detect it.
I tried both using Wi-Fi Direct feature, and regular WiFi. But S3 doesn't see that ad-hoc connection.
Why ? Anyone was able to do that ?

Most Android phones can't see Ad-hoc connections due to limitations (too many issues) in the underlying Linux library and service.
CM9 can see and use it just fine, and there is a fix for most other phones.
Roughly 9% of all computers are capable of running the network card in Host-mode and not only adhoc, so try using Connectify which builds a true Wifi accesspoint.
If it's only to share data between the phone and computer, you can afaik also use the Wifi AP in the phone to connect both.
I've been trying every fix I can find for S3 but everything breaks the Wifi connection, so does anyone know any way to get it working? Because obviously you can setup most routers not to use Ad Hoc but I tried to tether to some Symbian phones but they can only create an Ad Hoc connection.

Most routers actually WONT use ad-hoc unless specially configured to do so. And many don't even know the concept of mesh networks =)

Test if the following (still) works:

It uses your phone's full-fledged Wifi AP to reverse-tether to another phone.
However it requires a somewhat complicated setup on your Symbian phone which I'm not sure it can handle.
Alternatively you need an extended wpa_supplicant binary to handle ad-hoc.
I'm not sure if any good ones exist, except for CM9. (Which might/will be incompatible with Stock ROM's)
You can use connectify for windows to create connection in the form of Access point
As far as I remember the Nokia N900 is the only one capable of that because it runs on Linux but no version of Symbian can do this because even custom Roms on there consists of basic file swapping and no real system access, and I did used to use Ad-Hoc enabler but that does just kill the Wifi connection now, and they removed that from the market now because they say they updating it hopefully for ICS.
Connectify has one drawback. You can't share 3g/4g connections on the PC, unless you have a premium version.
VirtualRouter doesn't work on my system for unknown reasons. It says service not started, even when it actually is.
I tried VirtualWifiRouter from wwwDOTvirtualwifirouterDOTcom. Seriously good..
