Hello -
I have been trying to get music transferred from my computer running Ubuntu 10.10 to my new Thunderbolt with zero success.
The computer will recognize the phone when I plug it in and select Disk Drive from the phone, but it shows up as having no available storage space, so I can't even drag-n-drop music to it.
Has anybody else had any luck with this?
Thanks!
Sounds like it's not automounting. When you plug the phone into your computer and choose disk drive, is there an icon in Nautilus, or whatever file manager you use, for the phone? If so have you tried right clicking it and choosing "Mount." Otherwise you can just mount it from the terminal.
I use ubuntu 10.10 as my media center on my laptop and have transfered music using it. It took me awhile to figure out how to sync my music, however, i was able to access the sd card right off the bat after plugging it in. Navigate to /media and see what is listed there.
On a whim, I checked for system software updates on the computer and there were a few that needed installed. After installing them, everything works great. I'm using Rhythmbox and the phone now shows up in there and will let my sync.
Thanks for the suggestions!

I love HTC phones and the 8929 hands down my FAV. had to use BB for the past 2yrs. Now I got an HTC back in my hands. I was expecting it to be familiar to the tilt but now I feel really stupid.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to load my music (not itunes, that is all the info I can find) or pictures. I don't want an App. I'd like to see my file system or even be able to see the SD card but I can't find it on my puters file system.
So I know this means I am missing something simple. The handbook talks about amazon and mp3 store and the like. i have my own stuff I want.
So, can someone please point me to a link for dummies that will tell me how i can see my SD card and drag and drop my photos, ringtones, and music onto this phone.
I guess BB's media manger got me spoiled, hell even Motorola has great software for this simple stuff. I got the HTC sync loaded on the PC and all contacts loaded up but that is it.
I'm sorry for such a simple question but I'm lost and can't see the phone for the screen! Please help....
Thanks
when you hook it up to your pc a pop up should come up, select disk drive. if it doesnt pop up, slid open the notification tray and click on where it says "charge only" and change it to disc drive. it should pop up on your computer just like if you plugged in a flash stick.
just drag and drop the files onto your sd. the built in music/gallery apps will find the files and display them for you.

Thanks, I did that and your right the files did show. But the files are very different looking when compared to a windows and I didn't see a disk marked "sd card" or any files that look like they were on a sd card. So I stopped. if I move the files am I moving to the card or the phone memory?
Again, this is a very noob question for a forum of this type so Thanks for taking the time to answer. If you know of a stickies or any link where i can learn this system on my own i'd be happy to read it. But an answer would be great to. In any event looks like I have a lot of reading to do. I learned about my 8525 and 8929 from this site so I started here 1st. this site rocks.
Thanks
when you select it to go to "disc drive" it only hooks up the SD card, so no matter what you see in there, odd file folders, temporary files, etc, it's just stuff your apps put in there or you downloaded from the net, etc. not the phone's memory, just the card.
I usually follow the rule of "if I don't know what it is, don't touch it" which is a good creed to live by. sometimes apps just create folders and files on the sd card to free space up on your phone's internal memory. if you delete them, you could loose data for those specific apps, but even if you upped and deleted them all you wouldn't be doing anything that would would cripple your phone, just lose things like game saves, settings for certain apps, nothing you couldn't restore eventually.
anyway, to keep everything good and organized, just once you get it set to disc drive, go ahead and make a new folder called music, one called pictures, video, etc and then dump the files into their respective folder, the phone will pick em up no matter where they are.
In usb drive mode, I click and drag jpgs into the TP.
on the photo app, u can see the folder name, but 0 images. What can cause this?
thanks in advance.
anyone?
this sounds like a simple thing to do. If it worked for you, did you just drag and drop anywhere in the usb drive, or you must make a folder?
is there a limit to the file size?
did you eject the TP from windows?
unlike most removable devices, the TP does not enjoy being ripped out without being ejected first.
ejecting from within windows explorer seems to work better than stopping it from the removable device icon.

it's working now. not sure if that was the key step.
what i did was to remove the old pics and folders, and made a new folder within "wallpaper" folder that was there at factory default.
I'm having this same problem and nothing I do differently works. It's quite frustrating that I can't even use this for a photo frame!
The music I transfered works, but only with the Audiophile app.
Hah! I figured it out, I simply did the opposite of what looktall suggested and ejected it from Windows instead of the file explorer and that worked, but it displayed the message "OWW That hurt. Next time eject.. etc etc.".
I plug the phone in and it opens the 'what do I want to do' screen and then closes it right away. And then just keeps doing this over and over every few seconds. Anyone else notice this?
I've had mixed results. Earlier today at work, on my Win7 machine, I plugged that bad boy up and it immediately found the phone and loaded the drivers. The phone then appeared in Windows Explorer as "EVO" and when clicked on, expanded to show the contents of the memory accessible to the user. There is about 10 gb free on my phone.
At home now, is a different story. I'm running XP Pro and can't seem to get the right drivers installed. I'm tinkering with it now but am not sure what to expect. I've also installed Airdroid, but haven't gotten around to trying it yet.
Update: Still no joy getting MTP to work, so I tried Airdroid and it works beautifully.
Try swapping the cable out. I've had similar results with a cable that would charge fine, but would give dodgy results when trying to use as a disk drive.

This worked for me. I'm using xp pro and it couldn't seem to find the phone with the HTC cable provided so i tried an old BB cable i had lying around and strangely enough it worked
Used the cable that came with it instead of my regular Evo cable and it worked fine. Weird.
did it to me too. I was plugging intop a usb hub. Once i plugged directly into the pc, the issue resolved itself. Dont use Hubs!
Next dumb question of the night. Where do ringtones go on this thing since they don't go on the SD card like with the Evo

You should see a folder called sdcard. It's the name given to the 10 gigs or so available to us. If you have a physical sd card, I think it's call ext/sdcard or something like that. Anyway, there is a "ringtones" folder in the sdcard folder.
I think HTC stated that file mounting on the evo lte is different than the one x. If you wanna transfer files, im pretty sure you have to use HTC sync. If you have a memory card though, that should be able to mount as a removable device.
hope i helped
Hmmm. I see that in Astro but not when I plug it in
It seems like all I can do is select HTC Sync.

It's still a bug and should be reported. I plugged my 3D into the same cable on the same hub and it was able to dump the whole SD card over that connection, so there's something wrong with the E4GLTE if it can't handle the same setup.
I have a 32gb card and mounted as a disk drive just fine. HTC sync is for internal storage maybe?

It put it as /sdcard2 in my brothers phone
depending on how you're looking at it, it will either be listed as /sdcard2/ or as ext-sdcard
they both mean the same thing. the /sdcard/ by itself is internal.
any ringtones you want to put in need to be in a /ringtones/ folder, doesn't matter whether you make it in the internal or external available space
same thing goes for /alarms/ and /notifications/

You can put them on your sd card no problem. I transfered all my music over to my 32GB card on my computer last night and all was fine. Hooked up my 3D and also my LTE and just dragged the folders/files in windows explorer across the two drives fine...
Then to assign the ringtone that's on the extra sdcard(the one I put music on and didn't come with the device), all you have to do is when presented ringtone options click add and you should see the list of songs in there u added.....
Actually now I think of it, I went into HTC music player and got it to see the music before I did that too...
Also had google music sync up and download everything for offline use too but I don't think they showed up after I did that personally....though I could b wrong and its actually pulling the ringtone from my google music copy...

I see what you mean. I didn't see the 'Add' button at first. However that just seems to list ALL music on the device which is a bit of a pain due to the amount of music on my card. I ended up moving the ringtones to my SD card then just Astro to move them over to the internal storage. Not the quickest method, but seems to be better for keeping everything organized.

It's really dumb, but don't pick one of the two big choices at the top. Pick "Media Sync" in the smaller text options below those. As long as your pc is up to date, you should see "Evo" show up under my computer.
So something weird just happened to me. I have HTC Sync Manager installed on a Windows XP laptop. I did not have Sync Manager running. I connected my phone to my computer and set it to media sync with USB debugging connected. My internal memory and SD card popped up. I went in and deleted files and folders I no longer wanted from both. I always do this on the computer because it's much faster. I set the phone back to charge only and then unplugged it. I went into astro to take a look, and noticed there were no files or folders in both the internal memory and the SD card. I went to the storage option in the system settings and it showed I had 100% free space on my SD card and internal memory. All my apps are there though, as the 2GB partition was unaffected. It seems my SD card and internal memory were formatted somehow.
Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Sometimes Windows can play you dirty. I would first suggest upgrading to Windows 7 because the write access to files on usb media was much improved, I've seen this issue happen to me several times with USB drives or flash drives in general. Sometimes I copy things and after unplugging the device the file I copied is not there, even though when I copied it, it told me that the operation was completed successfully.
Second of all, I would suggest that anytime you do an operation like this, never disconnect the media immediately, let it sit for a bit if you deleted large files or a large amount of files. Last but not least, it could of been human error, sometimes we just mess up and we don't even realize it.
Are you having any other problems with the phone? Are your apps working? was the total folder structure of the /sdcard and /sdcard/sd_ext erased ?
Same thing happened to me yesterday. But for me I'm pretty sure I unplugged it too quick and lost everything. At least everything was still running fine. I performed a quick titanium and nandroid backup and I was fine

That's the funny thing. I let it sit for a minute until the phone fully loaded the memory just like I have done 100 times before. All apps are working, and the phone is working 100% otherwise. I'm guessing it's just a glitch, or a small voltage change could have wiped the memory.
That computer was my work computer, that's why it still has XP.
I am trading an old iPhone 4s for an Evo LTE tonight and I just wanted to make sure I will be able to access both the Internal storage and SD card via MTP on my Mac. I used a GS3 for a short time and the only way to access any of the storage on that thing was using AirDroid and some crappy card reader I bought at Fry's. It worked okay, but I really miss MSM Kies and AFT all failed to connect to my Mac. And yes, I use a Mac before anyone starts talking smack LOL! I love Apple, Android, and Windows, I am I fanboy of technology!! All my music and movies or on my Mac BTW.
If anyone has a quick sure fire way to plug and play with my Mac I would appreciate it. I don't want to be up all night adding movies and music in pure disgust
Thanks.
I am a Mac user, and not familiar at all with the programs you mentioned. I'll look them up after I answer your question.
Assuming you are going to root the phone and install a custom recovery (TWRP is my recovery of choice), you will have access to both internal (sd0) and external (sd1) storage when mounted via usb in recovery.
Otherwise, just mounting the phone through usb, I only hace access to the internal storage. THere may be another way to get to external storage that I am not aware of, but this method is working fine for me.
Good luck.
ETA: If all you are looking to do is sync your new phone to itunes, there are apps in the playstore that can handle that. Too lazy to look them up for you; just wanted to point you in the right direction.
