Upload speed after installing custom Rom.... Slower? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, stock I ran the speedtest app and managed around 32 down on 4G - since installing a custom Rom however, it seems anything based on the .9 release, uploads seem capped at around 5. Anyone else have this problem?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App

Ya my upload speeds were right around 24mbps stock. After root, kernal and rom i dont get above 4mbps up. Strange. Also speed test app says I'm closest to DC. Even though I'm in Florida.. could be GPS fail.

Guys.. you arent actually getting those speeds. LTE does about 15 down, 5 up. The buffer on the phone lies about your speed because the file being sent is smaller than the buffer size. If you want a REAL number, tether to your desktop computer and run speakeasy.net

so once you root the packet being sent changes size when rooted??? i did a few trys before and after rooted at the actual speedtest.net not the app and there was a difference so im sure there is something else goin on

Something about this doesn't pass the smell test though - using the same app, same hardware with only the underlying framework changed the numbers it reports should be identical..... even if they are flawed and way inaccurate. I know in reality it isn't 30 something up, that's a little rediculous, however I would expect a custom rom to report the same error the stock rom reports, or if it doesn't have an explanation as to why it doesn't, and why the number it reports is more correct... it's just confusing otherwise. Thanks for the replies guys, it's been bugging me

RevA enabled?

I have DCDs, 3.2.5 rom on my Titan. Everythings fine, only question is do I really have RevA enabled? I do no see it listed under data parameters in ESPT.
Only see Packet Dial String line item. nothing else....
that's a question i wouldn't even ask, i trust DCD is a genius and wouldn't forget such an important detail in any of his fine quality roms
Yes, he is. I
Yes he is, i was not taking a negative posture, just a curious one. My download testings are around 600-700 kbps. then i read threads regarding enabling and or disabling rev-a in espt. Also i wondered if windows mobile produces a special icon on my home screen when in evdo rev-a. I am semi novice and am only seeing if im missing something. I also read, as of July 31st, all Verizon markets are 100% Rev-A, so maybe i am connected at those possible data rates and don't know it.
Use your phone and goto mobilespeedtest.com, run the test and see what it says.....

I've decided that that is a poor way to gauge Rev A speeds
When I had the latest DCD rom installed, I used those mobile tests to test Rev A and in my area consistently got speeds in excess of 600kbps.
Now I have the stock ROM and still, at times, get speeds in excess of 600kbps
So unless you are telling me the stock rom has RevA enabled but "they" are keeping that quiet, I wouldnt trust those mobile speed sites to be accurate reflections of whether you have RevA or not

just ran speedtests there and get a constant 1.37mbps-1.48mbps average
updated to newest dcd rom
Its the upload speed which will tell you if you are in a rev.A area or market. Over ~115 kbps upload is rev.a. Otherwise you are trying to look at cell tower traffic limitations. I get ~800k at noon and almost 2200k at midnight, but upload speeds stay around 300k regardles of time. thats out of the theoretical limit of rev.0
you wont see revA listed in the data parameters until VZ releases their update containing RevA. until then, its not official.
hmmm i was getting only 376Kbps when it was set to disable and now i get 1.68Mbps when its set to enable...
3.42.50radio
dcd 3.2.5 rom
rev A speeds
what do you enable to get the revA speeds?
I am on the 3.2.3 rom and the .3 radio.
I just ran "mobilespeedtest" and got 645.3 kps.
What am I doing wrong?
i just tried this myself..
go into settins/connections/.. click on connections.. manage existing connections.. select data network (#777).. click edit.. click next.. click next again..
under username: Yourphone#@vzw3g.com
pasword: vzw
click finish...
my download speed from mobilespeedtest.com was 600Kbps..
now its 1.4Mbps
hopw this helps
what the heck?
When I run mobilespeedtest, it consistently shows that my current bandwidth reading is between 165 and 200 Mbps. It says I can download at 20-25 MB/sec from their site.
I don't believe these numbers. What is wrong?

I think their numbers are a bit high, I use http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed and get about half but I also finally turned off active sync so it has free reign on the connection.

There also seems to be a huge difference between the speeds using Opera Mini and PIE using www.mobilespeedtest.com. So which are we to believe is the correct speed?

The problem is that some of those speeds you are getting are based on the processing time of the browser and not the true connection speed.
The best test to run is strictly a "text only" type of test as that does not require a lot of browser processing power to display the information. That will give you a more accurate reflection of the actual connection speed. Run an image test to see what your actual browsing speed is going to be.
However, "true connection speed" is kind of subjective since some people count only the actual connection speed, while others count the browser processing speed since that is what it also takes to display images.
Another problem is that the speeds displayed are typically those when connecting to the sites servers and dont accurately reflect typical internet browsing. Hence, its a good idea to run a few tests from a few different sites and then take an average to find your speed.
mobilespeedtest.com seems to give some consistent speeds for me:
using Pocket IE
732 kps
928 kps
838 kps
932 kps
using Opera Mini
2.5 Mps
2.1 Mps
1.5 Mps
dslreports = 905kbit/sec for the 1MB file.
mobilespeedtest = 932.10kbps
I am seeing similar results as Nitro - around 930kbps
Never use Opera Mini to test speed. When you load a page in Opera Mini, the page is actually rendered on their servers first, then it is relayed to your phone. That's what makes it load so fast.
When you run a speed test with Opera Mini, you're not seeing your actual throughput.
What you see in PIE is your actual throughput.

Connection speed Atrix vs Captivate

Why is it that my atrix ia slower in connection then my old captivate ...standing in the same place i always do when im at work on the captivate I get download speeds of easily 3MB per sec but with my new atrix I get if lucky 500kb per sec ...why is that id its the same network and a newer phone ?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
My guess would have to be that the Captivate modem/radio combinations are better optimized than what we currently have available for the Atrix. Hopefully once the other variants start releasing, we'll have a better combination to choose from.
.... I would think everyone would know this by now. You should read around the forums more.
The upload speeds suck; upload speeds are just as important as download speeds.
Because of this, pages will load around the ssame speed but they will take longer to initially start loading.

On my Cappy with HSUPA enabled I got around 3-3.7 down and 1.7 up with about a 150ish ping. On my Atrix I still get about 3 down and only .3 up (we already know it sucks) but my ping is still about the same. Honestly in real world usage I don't notice a huge difference, but yea obviously I want HSUPA to work like everyone else. Although I'm thinking if you aren't getting over 500 down you should exchange your phone because I don't think getting HSUPA will fix it.

4G speeds on New RUU 2.01.605.0 GB Leak

I have flashed the new Radio that JCase posted for the GB RUU. Flash 3 different roms based off this including JCASE stock. But on all of them i am only getting a Download speed of 3mbs instead of my normal 18MB+...
Wiped/Factory Reset/Wiped Cache/Wipe Dalvik multiple times before flashing and still not work, even flashed the radio over just incase, but still seems throttle.
Is everyone seeing this? Is there a throttle in place on this ROM?
Any help would be appreciated.

I think pretty much everyone is seeing this, its not you!
What are you using to test your speeds? The speedtest app will report around 3MB but the speakeasy website shows I'm getting 12MB down/2MB up.
I think the app isn't working well with the new O/S.
I think you should post in the correct section.
Speedtest DOES NOT EQUATE to real performance. It's a test.
Im getting 15-18 down on speakeasy
Have you tested speeds by going to speedtest.net on your phone's browser and doing it? That's usually more accurate.
My market apps are installing at the typical LTE speed as well. They are flying down the pipeline. Even ROM downloads on links from Tapatalk are typical 10-11 MB down LTE rates.
Again I think it's an app thing with the speedtest app.

Sorry. wasnt sure on what section since this relates to the Roms here.
You are correct speedtest is just a test and does not show the real performance just like quadrant doesnt.
I didnt run speedtest until i noticed how long it was taking to download an app which normally it speeds through it Lightening Fast...
But i did run the speadeasy.net and got 18up/5down.
Thanks, Just didnt see anyone else make a comment or post about this any other threads.
I'm having the same issues. There is definitely a difference. I noticed my data alot running slower before I ever tested it.

I didn't even think to test my 4g speeds - I was too excited about how fast the new ginger-sense roms are running in terms of performance.
I just ran speak easy - I am in Philadelphia and have full 4g most of the time
12.95 down - 4.95 up.
4G speeds are still there. Speedtest app isn't reporting correctly.
How is everyone's battery life doing?
Sorry, but the basic debloat only pulls about 3 megs where I would normally pull 20-28. Doesn't matter where/how I test it. Website, app, and tethered to test on my computer all report 2 to 3 megs.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Try speakeasy.net/speedtest in the browser. I just pulled over 25 down and 8 up on it. The speedtest app just isn't giving accurate results.
speak easy is about the same, but performance is down for me. Market apps are a lot slower and i wasnt able to stream the nba game very well... so real time performance of LTE on the leaked GB radio is def slower for me flashed back to MR1 and streaming is good im sure in a week or 3 there will be a newer leaked GB radio tho. All these "issues" should be expected for new tech like LTE so just be happy with all these early leaks! Most phones go months waiting for what we have gotten in weeks! We def have some extra love from vzw and htc and ours devs!!! (IMO)
Downloads from dropbox and the browser max out at about 400 K which is about 3 Mbit. I noticed this before ever running the speed test app. I am basing my experiences on real world usage not just speed tests. My 4g is absolutely limited to approximately 3Mbit on this radio. As reported by others this is also noticeable in market downloads and in streaming video performance.

I am also noticing Pandora is being painfully slow. It takes a long time for it to load the next song. Before it would be only a few moments between songs.

Also if you look at the provider speedtest and speakeasy both use OOKLA as the backbone broadband provider so they should produce the same results. If they don't then it is they app. Try doing the test from the Speakeasy website from your phone then from the Speedtest website from your phone. They should both be the same.

Verizon data throttling the Thunderbolt?

I have LTE turned on in my area and when I use my wireless tether for root users I get awesome speeds between 2-3MBps but after about 150-200MB downloaded those speeds immediately drop off to just 10-20k or so. Now I rarely go over the 5GB soft cap and even when I do it's only by a few hundred MBs. Is there some sort of throttling going on and any way to stop it?
It has been discussed actually (and with that application), but anyways, at least you tried
Assuming your speeds are bad due to one application isnt exactly a very good test (more so since you did not say what version of the application you are running since that could matter). If you want to be certain, try internet connection mode via usb and download a test file from a location around you, such as from one of these data centers http://www.linode.com/speedtest/ and watch the speed. Doing that, you can eliminate plenty of variables, like the wifi connection on either end acting up for whatever reason and the application.
If it stays constant, then it's the app. If it doesn't, well that's not a 100% indication either. LTE is unstable speeds will fluctuate. If you're only testing from one location, that's not a very good conclusion either.
Whenever you have a problem, try to go through the total process of elimination only focusing on one variable at a time and try to keep everything else the same. Most likely it's you or the current setup on your phone or the application, not verizon. How do I know this? Because many have downloaded way more than you have and haven't been throttled (just from people I know locally with an LTE enabled phone).
Exusting all possible outcomes is a much better conclusion than wildly guessing you are being throttled though.
Another way you can test directly on your phone:
1) open up the terminal
2) type the 3 lines below: (downloads a file, gets the time it took and then removes it after)
cd /mnt/sdcard
time wget http://207.192.68.6/100MB-newark.bin
rm 100MB-newark.bin
*if the above doesn't work, then you need busybox, but nearly every rom/kernel has it that's not stock, so you should by default, have it. If not, search in the market for busybox installer. The reason you see an ip there is wget doesnt play well with hostnames on the android due to the way it resolves domains and busybox generally being statically linked. If you want to try another url, you have to get the ip like above (you can do that by pinging the hostname on your phone).
3)Note "real" the time it took in seconds and divide 100 by that to get Megabytes per second (MBps not Mbps) or by 102400 to get Kilobytes per second (I suppose you could get Megabits, but that's a pretty pointless measurement other than making your connection look fast compared to saying bytes, since your files all appear in bytes and browser downloads show in bytes). If you really care about mbps, multiple what you did above already by 8.
4) when it finishes you have an answer totally on your phone alone.

I believe there is a problem with the "Wireless Tether" app. I don't think it plays well with the 4G, this could be a reason for it. Have you tried used the "Mobile Hotspot" app, that comes with the phone? Do you get the same results?
I have also used the stock mobile hotspot app as well as tether via usb and get the same result. For clarification... I am downloading large files (500mb or larger) from a work server so I know that it's a problem on my phone end and not a problem on the server end. I can be on my home computer and download the files and never drop below 5MBps download the whole time... usually never drop below 10MBps to be honest.
Android police says that the way wireless tether works.. there is no way to tell if you're tethering or not without digging deep into packets.. deep enough that it would be invasion of privacy

That's all good and well but there is definitely something going on here. I've run the same test same file all 3 ways once every 4 hours since my first post and at about 150-200mb downloaded my speeds drop to almost non existent and the same goes for files downloaded from Microsoft and Google among others. Downloading the same file from my home internet does not see this slow down at all. I've even tried letting it run for over an hour like that to see if it was something temporary. It seems to stay throttled down till I've let the phone sit for a few hours without using any data then kicks back up to normal speeds until I restart another large download.
Is there any way to do a more controlled experiment to see if I'm crazy, unique or what?

yeah...backup your current rom, flash and restore your phone back to near stock (still rooted) and try without any meddling (custom stuff) http://www.multiupload.com/26WG1UZCXR http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423
you also never mentioned what android version and rom you are currently using. if it's anything other than froyo, that could be your problem since nothing else is anywhere as stable (by stable, i dont mean "oh it works" i mean as in tested throughly and was put out for non testing release).
Though the above suggestions stated above likely are the culprit, and will help you...there is also a chance that you are indeed being throttled occasionally. Infact, I'm sure we all have been. Verizon has several manned data centers throughout the state who monitor all the traffic happening, and can, and will, activately manupulate the speeds, thoroughput, etc depending on how conjestion things are. And yes, they can even pinpoint it on an individual level...though they rarely do that, tending to focus on what's happening on a more macro level.
I actually wasn't even aware of this until recently, but some guy who worked at Verizon who was also in school for that sort of thing let it slip when we started chatting for a second, to which he received a scathing look from the ***** manager, so that ended the conversation.
I was running DasBAMF 1.6.3 and I did return to stock without root this morning to try it out that way as well and I'm still seeing the same results.

Find someone else with a 4g device and have them download next to you at the same time. Only other option I can think of doing.
I'll try that.
Update:
I got with a few friends and tried a few different things. 3 people with Thunderbolts and 2 with Droid Charge. 2 in Seattle and 3 in Spokane. The Thunderbolts rooted and running DasBAMF 1.6.3 and the Charges fully stock. We tried the download using 3 methods for the TBolt's (wireless tether for root, mobile hotspot and USB tether) and the Charges used the mobile hotspot.
We all downloaded the same files. A 512mb video file, 400mb zipped picture file and a 300mb document file.
My Seattle friends who have had the "official" 4G LTE launch had no issues downloading at all... 1 TBolt and 1 Charge. Download went smoothly and never throttled down at all.
All 3 of us here in Spokane saw the same throttling going on. Could this be more an effect of LTE not being "officially" deployed in Spokane yet? It's not supposed to be officially launched till June 19th but we've been able to access it for several weeks now.

I would say that's a possibility. I get around 130 kbit/sec down, and LTE was officially launched here in december but only at our airport. I've been checking for nearly two weeks now and it's stayed the same. the upload is normal, was 3.5mbit/sec today.
This is all good to know. I'll be in Seattle next week for work. Can't wait to have 4G for a week

One user that was plauged with switch to 1x being reported it being eliminated by the mods
Confirmed working on MIUI, eclipse 1.2 & 2.0.3, stock 2.3.4 and CM7
Mod 1 "may" work on any other 3G phones, mod 2 when posted "may" work on other 3G MOTO phones.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mod 1
The Problem:
Since I do not have internet at home and I live in a poor service area any increase in 3G data speeds I can get is beneficial. So, I started looking into a way to increase my 3G data speeds.
Please let me know what rom you are using when you post something
Note: The first boot I did on some of these took a few minutes for 3G to first come up. Any reboots later it showed up immediately. I had no service issue and triangle once or twice while I was checking all of these. Reboot always fixed it.
The Solution:
First, nandroid backup prior to changing anything on your phone is a good policy to follow.
Most of the build.prop edits I’ve found are for GSM phones. I did find one thing that might help. I have confirmation from another source this hack works for them as well.
The line to be edited in build.prop which is in your /system/ folder by root explorer, root browser or any other editor/method of choice (make sure you backup your build.prop first):
Code:
persist.ril.uart.flowctrl=1
Change the “1” to “10”, save your build.prop, and reboot.
You can change the 1 to 1-10 and null or blank.
These are my results below in kb/s.
1=baseline 75-100 kb/s
0= no service – Don’t do this!
2-5 = 100 kb/s with some temp increases
6-9 = 150-200 kb/s
10 = 250-350 kb/s
A null value gives me 150-300 kb/s with large fluctuations.
I found that “10” gave me the best speed with most consistent results.
These speeds were clocked in actual large file downloads not a speed testing app.
I found that speed testing apps do not give accurate results. The real downloading gives real results.
Note: With this a tester was getting 500kb/s downloading a rom over 3G.
Please reply back with any results you find as I am looking for conformation of my findings.
If you try this in a different ROM please let me know your findings as well. This SHOULD work in any rooted X2.
Doesn't work on liberty for the moment. Gonna attempt it on fully stock liberty soon
Thanks to MoonShadow-NM for his assistance with the write up

Mod 2 - Can be used along with Mod1
Atrix lib replacement mod
This mod I found helped with increasing data speeds in my poor service location as well as an increase in speed in a good service location
Signal at a horrible -102 dBm I was getting a consistant 200kb/s download where I only had 100kb/s before using this in conjunction with mod 1 at a value of 10
Signal at a nice -62 dBm I got a nice 400-500kbs consistant download speed where I only had 250-300kb/s before using this in conjunction with mod 1 at a value of 10
Note: You may see a better increase as I am a huge data user and subject to network optimization by evil red.
This mod at my house also stopped my phone from jumping between two towers. One with a -130 signal and the better with a -102.
The attached file is an Atrix lib_motoril.so file. It is a different file from our stock blur file. It is about 50kb smaller in size then any X2 blurbased non-port rom file I found. It was given to me to try by a Alien port user after talking with him about his nice data speeds and connections prior to any modifications.
This is a fairly easy file swapping mod.
Download the attached atrix lib and extract wherever you want.
Navigate to the /system/lib/ folder in a file manager of choice and either backup by placing a .bak after the .so of the original libmoto_ril.so file.
Go to where you extracted the Atrix lib file. Copy and paste that file to your /system/lib folder and then set permissions to the rw-r--r-- for it..
Reboot and let me know if you had the same good results as me.
Thanks to kinevil for the atrix lib and idea to try this file!
I make sure BSR is installed before I try anything so I can do a battery pull and get into BSR. Wipe cache and dalvik if any issues come up first then you can always nandroid after that if needed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mod 3 - May help with connection stability. Not speed.
Easy build.prop addtion
In a fike manager such as root browser and root manager got to /system/ and open your build.prop to edit.
Add the following line.
Code:
ro.mot.eri.losalert.delay=
The standard mod for this us 1000. Feel free to play around with it. Please post your results.
Happy modding!
Confirmed not working on MIUI. Causes data refusal, and system force close.
Worked for me, doubled the speed. Thanks for the tip!

Below are my results using speedtest:
Before mod/reboot: .50 down. .55 up
1 min after mod/reboot: .70 down. .14 up
6 min after mod/reboot: 1.13 down. .52 up
So it seems better. Not sure on the fluctuations after mod though. I'm sitting at my desk at work and haven't moved and all this was completed in a 10 min window. Thoughts?
Stock ROM, 2.3.4, rooted, build.prop mashup v5b

Use a real download from the web and watch it. This app works well to watch download rate https://market.android.com/details?id=info.kfsoft.android.TrafficIndicator
Looks to me like it doubled what's your app says on a before and after

This mod crashed my service. After rebooting, I received the triangle and dialed *228 and *22899 with no luck. It failed to activate and update my phone and gave me a "no network" message.
Reset value and phone works again.
Update: Went back and reread OP just to make sure. Noticed 0 was no service and thought I'd better try again just to make sure. Set value to 10 and had the same result. Set value to 9 and it worked. So tried 10 again and it worked. Not sure why but...
Changed it on Eclipse 1.2 with everything listed in my sig. No clue if its actually helping since I'm downloading a 9 MB update from the App Store and its going at 20 - 25 Kbps.
Edit: Testing with the Speed Test app getting just 400 Kbps instead of what you stated the usual 1200 - 2000. Websites seem the same but downloads are worse. Will keep using it for a day or so but every other 3G boost mod had never worked or made it worse on my phone. Especially 3G Turbo Booster.
Tried this on CM7 lost data connectin and had the roaming triangle. After several reboots and *228 2 it Finally came up. Im not noticing a huge difference yet, but I believe Im be throttled like crazy now. I'll know for sure if it make a difference when I get home.
Edit
Im seeing the difference now, and yep it is faster.

You could be a victim of network optimization where you're located now.

Tried downloading a file I have uploaded on a server, only 25 MB but had to cancel it after 5 Min XD . Was only at 17% at that time.

I tried this on Liberty and after a reboot I the Motorola systen was fc'ing as was the some android media something. When I first tried to change the number to 10 it root explorer wouldnt let me add another digit, I could change the digit and did so to 9 but thats when I started having system fc's. Im now installing cm7, again, and then going to try this mod, again. I'll report back if it works for me or not.
Ignore this post
Thanks for the work motcher just an fyi my 3g at work is real spotty and the alien port data was blazing even there maybe something to look into
I installed CM7 then edited the build.prop using root explorer. I dont see any change in 3g speed.

I don't see much of a difference. I got a high of about 140 KBps and an average of ~100 KBps without the modification. I am getting a high of about 160-180 KBps and an average of about 100 KBps with the mod. If I leave it to statistical error, there probably is no difference to me.
Meh!
