[Q] Is Webtop Firefox Actually full experience? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a simple question...Is the firefox on the webtop a full experience as pc? For example some flash games like Farmville won't work on an android phone in browser, but will they work on webtop firefox? It is not like this game is important for me it is an example came to my mind to compare.

So far it seems pretty close. Although you cannot stream Netflix and I didn't try the game you mentioned. I have used it stream Hulu (but full screen even on fast wifi is a little bit choppy). I can use the Citrix plug in to pull up my Windows XP desktop and access programs from work. (pretty wild to be pulling up an XP desktop on the tv from the phone).
HDMI really needs the 1080 badly....720 doesn't cut it for reports and the like..
Still, for me, it isn't a pc or notebook replacement. If I am travelling and don't want to bring a pc I can bring the Motorola keyboard and Verbatim BT mouse and it will do in a pinch (assuming I have wifi).
imho

To answer the OP's question: Yes. It is a full Firefox browser install, like it would be on any linux-based computer. The same limitations that exist for standard linux desktops with Firefox apply to the webtop as well (no Silverlight so no Netflix, no Windows Media Player, etc). But the flash plugin is there, and works fine with Hulu, flash-based games, Youtube, etc.

I tried to play minecraft on webtop firefox, but then found out that Java wasn't installed. Can I actually install java?

firfox browser addons
does it support plugins like divx web player... or veetle plugin...

Unfortunately there is no java plugin, and I could not get the latest Oracle embedded jre to work with it (even though it shows up in about: plugins). Any plugins that work with Firefox on linux should work in the webtop, provided the plugins can run on an ARM platform.

[Q] remote desktop client

Is there some app that I can use like mouse ore something that is free. I just need it when I watch movies at night to turn pouse, play or something?
remotedroid.net
thanks man...works exelent! I write this with that app from my bad!
There's also Unified Remote which has a bunch of different interfaces dedicated to different programs, e.g. Keyboard, Mouse (multi- and single touch modes), MediaCenter, Media, Web Browsing, etc.
Also, if you have VLC on your computer, there is a VLC Remote. You might need a patched market to get it though.

[Q] Control Pc with tablet app?

Is there any app that allows me to control my pc via my Nook? I would like to be able to contol the media on my computer as a sit back and relax
My favorite app for remote desktop is Logmein its $14.99 on the app market. And works great on the Nook
Sent from my NookColor
There are many such apps on the Market. Have you tried Gmote?
My favorite remote app is Unified Remote, which has remotes for almost every purpose. It even saved my life when I had to give a presentation for an exam with 3 fellow students.
Nobody brought a presenter, so I quickly installed the desktop client and passed my phone to whomever was speaking next.
For a full-featured remote desktop, I settled for Android VNC Viewer. No need to pay money for Logmein.
PROTIP: Have a look at this thread I made a while ago: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115986
Using these steps, you can launch your remote app (and any other app) right from the lockscreen. Saves me loads of time whenever I just want to adjust the volume or stuff like that.
I love Unified Remote as a plain remote.
VNC is also great for free but Logmein just rocks for me with multiple networks and stuff like that as a remote desktop app.

It may be a tad overkill for your purposes, but my favorite remote desktop app is Team Viewer.
Simple to setup, simple to use, and it's free.
For your purposes, I've heard a lot of good things about gmote, but I wasn't able to get it to work.
I use androidVNC with TightVNC server on my desktop. To lazy to get up and move the mouse for Netflix
+1 for Unified Remote
Excellent tool with lot of remotes for different situations.
This is the one I use: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.xtralogic.android.rdpclient&feature=search_result
There's also Tesla, if you use *nix on your PC.
Use teamviewer, it's free and best software I used for both Laptop & NC.
But you cannot use your PC to remote your NC via teamviewer

What settings do you use to control netflix? I was trying to do this, but the slow framerate kills any attempt to control my desktop, that and the netflix buttons don't render, so I have to guess where I'm clicking.
Other than that I'd +1 to androidVNC, suits most of my needs fine. I'll have to check out unified remote though, looks good.

Androidvnc is set up as 64 colors (1bpp) with Force full-screen bitmap on Auto, with Zoomable Scaling.
Everything renders fine for me, including the buttons. Colors are a little off, but that doesn't matter when I am only using it as a remote. On desktop side I did nothing in TightVNC except make sure that it turns off my wallpaper, just in case.
i was using pocketcloud (rdp) but hitting the menu button doesn't work anymore: No menu, no virtual mouse
I use and enjoy Splashtop Remote.
(Tried to add a URL to the market, but weren't allowed to do so. Search for Splashtop Remote HD in Android Market, that should do the trick.)
Not entirely sure what you want to control - but look into DLNA apps. You can play your media (pictures, video, audio) and control any other DLNA app/renderer (blu-ray, etc).
"Play this video on my TV" or "go to laptop, stream this music to my Nook Color". It's pretty handy stuff.

XBMC on Touchpad via CM9

This is ace. Just downloaded the APK for XBMC and tried it on my other half's touchpad, running CM9.
Works amazingly. Haven't found any flaws at all yet, it's fast, fluid and made me grin a lot. Worth a try...
I used the first mirror from this page: http://techie-buzz.com/mobile-news/xbmc-apk-for-android-leaks.html.
See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIG73FRd8-4&feature=youtu.be for a demo...
Thanks mate, i'll definitely check it out. I heard about this but didn't see if the apk's were available!
Streaming latest scene standard mp4's over wifi using uPnP via TwonkyMediaServer on MacOSX and it stutters a little bit. Hella nice tho for the announcement build, I'm super excited that XBMC is now available on android... went ahead and bought a headrest mount by monoprice (via Amazon.com free shipping) to go with it. uNF uNF
Just installed the XBMC apk on my CM9 Touchpad 9-20120707-NIGHTLY-tenderloin and the SOUND DOES NOT WORK.
Apps/repositories run smooth though.
Can wait to have a fully functional XBMC on my TP!!

Turn up the volume before starting XBMC.Not too loud.
Start XBMC and turn up the volume all the way.
XBMC can't control the android system volume.
It worked
Thanks a lot!

Got it running, got sound, but 720p videos are very choppy, is HW Acceleration not enabled for TP yet?

Not yet. Dev's say maybe by the end of the week.
I installed the XBMC apk listed in those linked threads, but I seem to get a black screen and my touchpad becomes quite unresponsive. Anyone else have a similar issue?

The same thing happened to me the very first time I ran the app, got a blank screen for 6 or 10 seconds and then got the xbmc logo and the app loaded just fine.
I'm on the latest nightly build. Try a reboot after you install the app and maybe even a wipe cache/dalvik.
Other that that, XBMC runs great on my TP
Thanks Zeek, that fixed my problem!
using xbmc remote app works
it said error but if you configure it right ignore the error it works the xbmc remote works really good
Has anyone gotten this to work on aokp? For me it launches, then crashes after a few seconds every time. Just wondering if it is because I am on aokp or if something else could be wrong. I have installed twice and have rebooted numerous times. On top of that I have cleared data, pretty much all the standard fixes. Any thoughts are appreciated. I know this thread is xbmc on cm9 but it should work seeing as they really both also based. Thanks in advance.
Works a dream. Even got it to add directories from my 250GB external drive so I can have a bigger library on the go. Great stuff.
I tried this out yesterday and everything works great so far. I had some script errors with the 1channel addon but I'm still playing with stuff. So far this is pretty cool. I'm going to try out the XBMC remote app tonight.
EDIT: BTW, for anyone who hasnt seen this yet, here is a thread where someone has started doing nightlies of the app.

So just an update, the XBMC remote app used on a phone works really well with the TouchPad.
Does anyone here use Plex? I currently have Plex Server installed on my win7 HTPC and use the Plex andriod app to stream it to my phone or touchpad. I have a static IP to the house, so I can use this anywhere that I have an internet connection.
I never used XBMC but was always tempted to give it a shot. Does it allow for streaming out of the local network like Plex does, or only on direct wifi connections withing the same network?
Anyone here ever used both Plex and XBMC and can compare?
XBMC is complete stand alone, however as far as I know you have to be within the same network for it to work. Plex uses a server on the PC to be able to stream, weather it re-encodes or not I'm not familiar with. With XBMC you browse your network to find the files you want to play, you can then create shortcuts inside XBMC to those files permanently and just use that to find them the next time. XBMC has the ability to mount imagename.img or imagename.iso files and play them as a dvd without any further need for work or hassle, even if the dvd is still in the multiple .rar format, it will handle it. As far as I know XMBC has the ability to play the most types files of any other media handling software, plus it does smoothing and up-converting to make SD material look better on HDTV's.
Been using XBMC for years now, still have two original xbox's in the house wired up to stream from my network and they/it works great. Now with my TP i can do it from anywhere in the house seamlessly
plex vs xbmc
plex started life as the mac version of xbmc, then switched approach to a dedicated server application and a client that works on most devices. the plex server processes all the metadata and transcodes if needed for a slower connection or device. the plex client cant do much without a server accessable, and is completely useless offline.
xbmc started life as the XBox Media Player to be a standalone media center that could be configured to play back as many formats as possible internally. xbmc runs on most platforms now that android is covered and can play back most media formats given3nough cpu or hardware acceleration. xbmc does not have a server component like plex does. instead, it knows a bunch of different ways of accessing data (called sources in xbmc ) so it can decode and play your media. sources can be local directories, windows file shares, websites, ftp sites, webdav (like box.net), upnp, etc etc etc. additionally there are plugins which are little programs which can access a number of more specialised sites or systems. xbmc can play media remotely from your home server, but you will not have any automatic transcoding so it will be bandwidth intensive
boxee is also based on xbmc, with social networking crammed in

Android based TV Box?

Long story short...
I setup a freenas tower and originally I had been running lots of server type application on linux VM's on my windows machine. Now I use jails to accomplish everything and I no longer need to run that computer 24/7. That computer was also solely connected to my TV which I no longer need or want to leave running 24/7.
I am currently running an Amazon Fire TV Stick and I really like it but it does not quite do everything that I want! And I was curious if you guys had any suggestions.
Plex App (Should be avaialable on all devices)
Typical movie/tv apps; HBO Go, Netflix, Hulu, etc (Also should be available on everything)
Amazon Prime Instant Video App ( really want this to be an app, and not loaded via the web)
A chrome browser (This would really help replace my desktop)
Wireless keyboard and mouse support
OpenVPN would be nice, but I do not think this is available without sideloading... which is possible
Currently looking at the new Amazon Fire TV and sideloading the Chrome browser. The Fire TV Stick does a decent job, but after its been on for a while it can get studder-y and choppy with HD video. So I was looking into an upgrade but havent trouble finding these specifics out. I would love you all's input!

remix os for video playback problem

remix os is great for some productivity stuff but since i have tried it for a week but no way around it plays videos on youtube or anyother streaming app or site so lets assume that this is a bug and i hope devlopers at jide will try to remove it in upcoming update. but until then if you want to play some video offline you can use vlc android app and it works fine on remix.

Having this problem too, and from what I've seen in the forums alot of people are facing it as well.
As a temporary solution, try BSPlayer. It's the only video playing app I tried that works at the moment. A bit clunky but functional.
Hopefully this will be fixed with the the coming updates =)
EDIT: I tried VLC player, but for some reason it crashes the entire OS for me xD
its to do with the graphics...my system can play full HD videos and 3D games like CSR2
try this....it might help:

I can confirm that on my Intel Core i3 with integrated hd 2000 YouTube works fine, video playback is fine, but on my older 24inch msi ae2400 that has an Amd 4670 mobile gpu video playback doesn't work and YouTube doesn't work. So i think its to do with the Amd video drivers, not sure if NVIDIA cards have a better driver, but intel gpu's seem ok
Youtube videos stream when I request the desktop version of the site in a web browser. This is not a graphics problem. There seems to be something wrong in mobile mode and something right in desktop mode. The browser proves it. Youtube and all those other apps must be running in mobile mode and that is where it seems the problem is. Try it... . Run Youtube in a browser in Desktop Mode --not mobile mode. Request Desktop Mode in a browser. @aayush97 @StormShadow_94 @freelancer81 @p3dboard

Good that you took the trouble to find the solution to the problem.
For me, I can't use internet as it does not detect my usb wifi dongle.
Maybe install opera/opera mini and see....that's what I use anyway.....I dislike stock browsers.
Or better yet, use the official youtube app...more feature rich and stable than browsers.

You need a browser with "a request desktop version" option. I don't think opera mini has this option. Moreover and probably a topic for another thread, in relation to your wifi problem, you could use somebody's android or apple smartphone to create a mobile wifi hotspot for your remix os computer to connect to. It will work. All smart phones have a mobile wifi hotspot.

thanks for the suggestion....about the browser.
opera mobile or opera mini (which i am using on my note 10.1 has that option.
regarding wifi hotspot.....if my pc has no wifi, how could i connect to any wifi hotspots?
anyways, i am not using it (RemixOS) as a go to OS yet....just trying out....so...no need for internet.
thanks again!
I can play videos in Chrome and VLC just fine, however MX Player simply crashes when opening the video (even the Remix Mini video). The laptop I'm testing it on has a Core i5-3317U with Intel HD 4000 graphics.
Thanks for the suggestions =)
I forgot to mention that despite video playback not working in the Youtube and Facebook apps (haven't tried others yet), they play fine when viewed from the web browser. On Chrome, clicking and holding the video itself even pops up a "save video" option; an added bonus =P
For me this is how I use Youtube and Facebook on Windows anyway (through Chrome not the standalone apps) so it doesn't bother me at all. I play local videos using BSPlayer and they play great and they have subtitle support.
Only thing I'm struggling to get working are games. Not one single game works and an OS crash is always caused. I'm using an Nvidia gpu (GT 315 to be precise..... I know it's a very crappy one xD). Hopefully we'll get better compability in the coming updates =)
Intel Mobile GME 965 Express Graphics Card (Compaq 610)
Installed 3.0.201 Still problems when playing Netflix, Youtube etc videos from the app. Video freezes very soon while audio continues. When playing videos from Chrome browser no problem. I have a Compaq 610 with Intel Integrated Mobile GME 965 Graphics Card. When will Remix support this?
Cheers,
Patrick
problem is the video cards. to at least be able to watch youtube, just open the youtube app, click on the three dots top right of the video window and choose video quality of 360 or less and you will be fine.........
