[Q] Speakerphone Echo / Scraping Sound - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With my Thunderbolt, the other callers hear a constant echo of their own voice, combined with a constant scraping sound. It sounds like half-duplex, but with constant echoes and horrible sounds. It is nearly impossible to hold a comfortable conversation with the party using the Thunderbolt, but calls sound fine to the person using the device.
Anybody else running into this problem, or found a fix? Haven't monkeyed around with the phone, and read that some people had better luck in just exchanging the phone.
I should mention: the scraping sound is incredibly loud. It's like the sound of someone scraping ice from a windshield, or pushing a giant cabinet along a concrete sidewalk.

Yes, I hear this when I don' t use my Bluetooth, any ideas on solutions?

I have this same problem. Has anyone heard of a fix? Have people replaced their phones and gotten TBs without this problem?

Sound muffled to others?

Not sure if anyone else has this going on, but multiple people say that I sound muffled and hard to understand while on the phone. Never had the issue on the Vibrant, and now it seems to be pretty common.
No, I'm not covering the speaker and I talk loud and clear. I'm using the latest QuikSense in case that has anything to do with it.
Thanks!
I have good quality when on the phone. Maybe it's a hardware problem. You should try it over Bluetooth to make sure

Data affecting speakers

Hey guys,
So this didn't happen with my SGS2, though it had happened before on some old devices. If the SGS3 is by speakers on my computer, I get really loud static noise.
Anyone know where this is from, and what made the SGS2 different? I'm sure there is no fix, but if anyone has any ideas I'm down to try.
Any phone I have ever had makes a pulsing static sound when receiving txts. I don't think there is a way to stop it unless you find a way to shield the speakers a little better. Radio waves have a hard time passing through metal screen so maybe you might be able to find a copper mesh you could wrap the speakers in lol. I would just keep the phone away from them if it bothers you that much.

Earpiece Distortion on Note 2

During phone calls, I am getting some distortion or slight background hissing sound on the earpiece when volume is set to around medium. Anyone else getting some distortions or annoying slight background sounds like cellular noise???? I can't replicate the issue when I use another phone other than my Note 2. I really like this phone but the earpiece just does not produce clear sounds. There is definitely slight hissing/buzzing that can be heard when using the phone in quiet places.
I have not experienced the hissing/buzzing but calls do not sound as clear compared to my s3.
I haven't had any issues with mine either.

Yup, same thing on mine. It's not bad, but it is noticeable.
Ive head a bit of crackling a couple of times but once I turned down the volume slightly its not there.
I had mine cranked to the max and then pushed the button for even more volume. No distortion.

Using my ink'd headphones with mic everything was fine. People heard me and I was heard fine. No distortion even with music turned up.

I have had this as well, going to trade mine out today at the Verizon store and will see. It sounds to me like a bad speaker. I just logged on to see if anyone else was having this trouble. Love this beat otherwise though!

Well, took it into Verizon and got a new one. It works great now.

I have not noticed this yet, but i will say clarity is not as good as my s3...no hissing or background noises tho.

I immediately noticed the same problem with my Note 2 last night. VZW sent out a replacement today.
Bummer, since the phone isn't rooted yet, it took me a while to set up the phone and install apps...what a pain without Titanium. Also wasted a SGP screen protector. But the earpiece noise was definitely noticeable, especially since my S3 sounds perfect.

Good to know. Hope my replacement is problem-free as well.
Same crackly static/distortion on my earpiece. Looks like ill be calling Verizon as well. Wasted a Zagg on this too.
Correction. Still bad on the second one. Going to get a third one today. Bummer. It sounded pretty good at first, but after a few hours it was back. So we'll see.

I'm getting a distortion/buzz as well. Only appears to be when the earpiece is producing sounds (not all the time) which still very noticible and annoying. I stopped on to see if other people were having the same issue because I had my family and gf vet the problem and they said I was "too sensitive" :silly:
Thanks for posting this, will try swapped hardware this week - otherwise device is excellent!

Yep same here. Using a Plantronics Legend earpiece and have the same distortion.

That sounds like it may be a different problem. As I am experience and read from others the distortion or fuzz is from the built-in earpiece of the device. I have tried to replicate the issue with other outputs (speakerphone, BT earpiece, wired earpiece) and none of my other output attempts have had the issues at all.
If you are experiencing distortion through BT connection only I would look to your BT earpiece or surrounding environment (although less likely).

Could someone please elaborate on the hissing? I have an issue with mine where when someone finishes a sentence talking it becomes sort of static-ey. It doesn't happen all the time.

Well, basically what I experienced was when a person spoke you could hear a short of static type noise with each syllable they spoke. It didn't happen all the time and was worse when talking to Verizon customer support, although that may be because the note 2 can sense evil. My third one seems to have done the trick. I have had since Friday and no issues. I can say as someone mentioned already that the call clarity is not as good as the s3, but I don't care as I love the phone enough. This is only when talking on the phone as mentioned as well. Not through an earpiece.
My Note 2 killed your phone.

Coming from another manufacturer and another carrier (Orig Evo, Sprint) can you clarify the "call quality" comments?
I'm fully on-board with the fuzz/hiss/static that happens when the other person is speaking and I'm working to switch mine out and rectify that issue but I've read a number of places that the quality is lesser than the S3 - how so? Hardware specific from S3 to GN2 or a VZW issue?
Thanks,
e
The issue is too much volume coming out of these satellites. They can't handle the maximum output, neither the speaker or the earpiece.
From what I can tell this is not a defect issue but the way it is. Replacing phones, especially this early into the production cycle, would be a waste of time for both parties.

[Q] Speakrphone issues [SOLVED]

Everyone says it is very difficult to hear me on the speakerphone and that I sound distant or garbled. Anyone else experiencing issues with using the speakerphone? I have a silver One from launch day on AT&T.
I'm not sure if it is my phone or a common problem. A friend of mine has a black HTC one and his speakerphone sounds fine.
I have no issue when not using the speakerphone.
Thanks
I got the same complaint when new with the phone. I researched and it seems the noise cancelling mic on the back can make this occur when lying on a flat surface (face up, back on surface). I make sure I don't have it lying flat and speak into the mic on the bottom. Usually I hold it. Haven't had any complaints since. YMMV.

Other Possibility
Then there is this thread in the Sprint HTC One forum. Hmmmm.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2262648
For some reason, I feel like my old Galaxy Note had better call quality than my One. I never had to repeat and raise my voice as much as I do now. I don't like the microphone placement because my left pinky tends to cover it when I take calls. It would've made more sense if the Mic was in the center since the charging port is more to the side.

My issue was the ZAG Invisible shield on the back of the phone was covering the Noise cancellation mic. Even though it looked like the the little square cut out and removed it was not. Apparently this can caused the problem as well. Hope this helps. You can test this by covering the noise cancellation mic while on speaker phone.

In Call volume

Again, on US Sprint
In call volume is very low....even all the way up?
Is this a bug or something I might be missing in a setting somewhere?
I turned on the calling plus feature. It has improved some but is still somewhat weak.
I have the same problem. I can barely hear the other person in a call. I have to jam the speaker into my ear and listen very intently. If I made a lot of voice calls, I would seriously consider giving up on this phone.
Low call volume.
Hey guys there is a simple fix for the low in call volume. Use your drop down menu and you should see something that is called calling plus. Toggle it and BAM volume fixed. It works with WiFi and LTE. Hope this helps guys.
Calling plus is ok but alot of times I have it where people cannot hear me and sometimes they call and it goes straight to voicemail on there end and I answered the phone twice. Sprint sucks.
The earpiece screen on this phone is recessed, unlike most phone which are flush with the glass. As a result, dust, dirt and fuzz from your pockets can collect there. Get a can of compressed air and give a couple short blasts to the side of the earpiece screen. I was surprised at the amount of junk that blew out. It probably won't make a huge improvement, but it certainly should help.
SAME PROBLEM.
I turned OFF voice clarity under calls. Immediate improvement.
Lg V30 Call Volume
Go to settings and then calls and turn of the voice clarity setting and it will be fixed instantly... Weird lg has this option when you cant even use it because you cant hear anyone but this will instantly yake care of your problem...
If turning off clarity fixes this, you will be my hero.
Lg V30 Call Volume
Lol it will fix it. I also noticed that my calls would always try to connect with HD Voice but never would. Now that I have turned off the Voice Clarity option, not only can I actually hear now, but my calls always connect in HD. Still don't understand why they would have the option for voice clarity when you cannot hear anything unless you are in a completely quiet atmosphere. Especially when it also basically disables the HD Voice.. Seems pointless to me! Im just glad I can finally hear now and not have to say huh? Or can you please repeat that about 10 times on every damn phone call! Hope it worked for ya!
This has been my #1 issue with this phone. Calling plus it's great but it doesn't work all the time and without it I can't hear very well at all.
Now that Sprint had decommissioned calling plus I was at a loss and was prematurely shopping for a new phone until I stumbled on this post and the call clarity fix.
Thank you

Also running a needle across the top, scrapes the crud off the earpiece. It's just a piece of protective plastic, with micro holes. As a result, they get clogged super easy. Was amazed at the crap I scraped off, after 1.5yrs of use. I can actually hear people again
Thanks for this idea guys. I was having an issue on an Alcatel Tetra where the calls would go in and out to where you could barely hear the person using the device. I went to call settings and disabled the background noise feature after reading this thread and bam, calls are crystal clear now, no more cutting in and out. So thank you very much for the idea on what the issue was. Stupid all these companies use different names for the same features, lol.
It seems to me that the real issue of the feature is some sort of lag.
