Hello everyone,
I recently bought an A28 and even more recently installed the SDE. Now that I've got root access I thought it would be nice to have vpnc to access my university's Wifi. I read about UrukDroid and would like to install it, but I'm unsure if the A28 is supported.
Does anyone have any experience with the A28 and UrukDroid?
With best regards
No i'e not i've an 101
But i think it would be better if you ask sauron (@pm) or you write a post in urukdroid bugs, in the developement area
I can't post to the development area yet, but I'll try the pm.
Thank you.
I have sucessfully installed UrukDroid on my Archos 28 a few weeks ago. It makes it run so much faster. The only problem i have had is that the boot image doesn't fit on the screen, but that is not a big deal.
Thanks for the info, I'll give it a try then.
EDIT: Installing UrukDroid: The simple mehtod failed (due to the absence of an SDCard on the A28), so I'm doing it via the advanced method (with the standard settings). It installed fine and I'm now booted into UrukDroid.
EDIT2: Any hints on where to find a vpnc howto for UrukDroid? vpnc reports it can't open /dev/net/tun.
EDIT3: I got vpnc to work by activating it in the UrukConf app. Starting it via terminal works well, but I can't seem to find out how to make it use my *.conf file. Plus I'd like to have an easier way to start it. Any suggestions?
But i think it would be better if you ask sauron (@pm) or you write a post in urukdroid bugs, in the developement are
Yap ask §auron, its the best way to feel save

Now, using my Archos 70IT machine,
After bootup, I need to run z4root (temp root) to root the machine,
then, I open up the setcpu to check the CPU frequency profiles,
repeating the steps again and again for each boot up...
Heard that it is hard to root as the system files are protected using a squashfs compressed image (with encryption?)
Cannot touch the system files make me feel sad
- I want to modify the hosts file to bypass all the advertisements
- I want to remove not-used system apps
- I want to modify the init.rc (maybe lagfix?)
- I want to apply wifi ad-hoc fix
- bla bla bla....
So, I would like to ask for the progress of rooting? Any news? Anything I can help to speedup the investigation?
Many of plenty of thanks to all those rooting gurus ~~~ !
I also have same problem. Can anyone advise how to resolve. Many thanks.
I think, though I can very easily be wrong, the problem right now is gaining write access to the partitions, the main system partition is mounted Read Only.
I'm trying to find time to look at this but I don't think I'll be able to get any time untill the weekend.

Yeah, from following a bit of the action over at archosfans.com forums it seems the system is mounted as a read only SquashFS image.
As soon as I get my A101 I'll dig deeper into this problem. Hopefully we'll get a working solution

Yes, I've been holding my order for the Archos 70 to see if root would seem plausible and I just ordered it now. A section at XDA together with Archos release of the source should help us in search for enlightenment
Delivery in 2-4 days, final exam for some electronics course next week and then I've got 30 days off Uni to spend on this...hopefully
I have an A70IT 8 GB and have yet to successfully get z4root to work on it. I'm using the latest version (downloaded today).
I look forward to hearing how some people are successfully doing it, at least I get the impression on the fan site, they are doing it successfully. If anyone knows or has the time / desire to help a fellow Archos user out, please feel free to contact me.

I had the same problem with Z4Root not working. I found that powering off (complete power off, no suspending or rebooting) the device and starting it back up again did the trick. I also found that I have better success getting Z4Root to run if its the first program I run after a fresh power up. Don't run anything until you Z4Root.
Let me know if this works for you or not.
I've been having inconsistent results, but just stumbled across something that might help.
set airplane mode
turn off unknown sources
turn off usb debug
power off
power on
reset airplane mode off/on (doesn't look like it is really on on reboot)
turn on unknown sources
turn on usb debug
run z4root
wait.
seems to be working more consistently. I think these tablets don't save the state of things like unknown sources and usb debug (and airplane mode) very cleanly.
does this proxy app work with z4root ?

i really would like to use the wifi at my university with my archos.
I've been using it for some time. The only trick is that you need uncheck USB Debugging and recheck every time you run the z4Root app. Doesn't matter if its currently on, uncheck/re-check and you'll be good.

Shouldn't it be possible to write a simple app that does this automatically on each startup after launch?
Tasker probably can. I haven't installed it to test yet.
Edit: Scratch that. USB Debug toggle is still on Tasker's to do

Ive managed to run Ubuntu Netbook Remix on the A101 in SDE.
By run i mean i see GDM, because the driver for the touchscreen seems not to be working.
What ive did was, i took an image from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/ports/releases/10.10/release/ and copied everything from the data partition to a new .img file. Also ive copied the modules from the angstrom rootfs.img.
Then just copied over my rootfs.img over the angstrom one and booted.
There seems to be lots of issues, mainly, i guess, because the init script in the initrd should do something, the one from angstrom doesnt.
Also the kernel-log says it cant read the /proc/ filesystem.
I uploaded my rootfs img to rapidshare for you to try for yourselfes, maybe someone can pick up from here and build a really working kernel+initramfs.

I know it's not working out of the box but it's still pretty cool! IBy netbook remix you mean the new Unity UI correct>
Yes, but as i could not login,i havent seen if the windowmanager works correctly.

Kudos! - You could just try to plug in a usb mouse/keyboard into the usb port - it's usb host (mouse and keyboard work in android)
I'd love to see some more action with this. A mouse+keyboard should at elast get you access to the desktop and thus, terminal. From there, enabling the touch screen should be within arms reach.
To experiment for myself, could you write together a fool proof (noob proof) guide to get to where you're at?

i tried that, but it did not work. But that might be because the only Device i have here to test is some wireless usb mouse, which might need some other drivers.
Im currently working on an image with the xserver-xorg-input-evtouch driver built-in. I hope that gets the touchscreen working in X11.
To get started:
Get some Ubuntu.
Install rootstock using: sudo apt-get install rootstock.
Run rootstock:
sudo rootstock --fqdn archos-ubuntu --login ubuntu --password ubuntu --keepimage --imagesize 2G --seed ubuntu-netbook
That one generates an .img file you can copy over your existing rootfs.img.
hi,
I'm very interested to get ubuntu working on archos 101
I've tried your instructions to build an image but it stops after:

i had to ctrl+c, because i tas going no where for about an hour.
I guess it needs display ? ..but i don't know how to solve this
Maybe you could try with an imagesize of 3G or another release like karmic.
i did, my first try was with 2Gb, but didn't finish because it went out of space
then I've tried with 3Gb and stoped as i wrote
I had that problem too once.. Just trying again might work rootstock seems to be a bit buggy.
A little update: usb-mice work, when the modules are copied in /lib/modules in the image, but only when no computer is connected on the mini-usb port, that was the problem in the first place.
Wlan driver extracted from stock archos android can be loaded too, but i didnt manage to get the firmware to load yet.
Ps: a happy new year to all of you.
Sent from my U20i using XDA App
I've tried this image http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10190468&postcount=38
boots really fast to desktop (10 seconds), but touchscreen don't work, also tried with mouse but nothing
please delete post
could be nice if we run Ubuntu on Gen8
Maybe the image from this thread:

will get us a little further?

Any luck with this?
Would offer to help, but am pretty much a n00b dev at this point >.<
Good God, how awesome it'd be to have a USEABLE distro of linux on the 101 or 70. I love using linux (i have linux mint installed on all 3 computers in my home) and it'd be excellent if i could install an embedded version on my tablet, but alas, i'm a plumber not a programmer! So if someone could post a few links or tutorials to get us started ( as i'm sure there are plenty of gen 8 owners who feel the same as me ) it'd be much appreciated.
Q. Does the 101 it have the same hardware components as the 5 it? The reason i ask is that i think there is a working version of ubuntu nbr for this device and im pretty sure it has the same processor as the gen 8 tablets ( cortex arm a8 ).
Q. Would an amature linux geek like me have any hope of porting it over to our device?
Q. Would it work natively or would we need to modify it?
If anyone else has an interest in having ubuntu on their tablet please post as we have to get this bumped up the list of to do's. BTW, thanks to all you guys in advance and best of luck.
shameless bump for a worthwhile cause!
EDIT:
also, if they can port it to the nook color...

that's only running via vnc - that means no drivers for display and touchscreen and unfortunately won't get us much further
yes it's just a chroot so you can imagine as a ubuntu running with the android kernel. you could try mux the drivers from the angström to the ubuntu kernel and compile the kernel for arm processors this could work, at least integrating ev-touch will help a lot. search for google for ubuntu4arm and you will find some howto.
the reason why i'm outta this is i have not much time at the moment and without a usable on-screen-keyboard (and at the moment there is none) ubuntu is worthless for me on the tablet.
Why o why have there been so few posts on this subject? Are we the only one's interested or is it just too much work to get another version of linux on the gen 8 devices? Really not trying to be rude to any of the developers on xda because i think you guys are awesome, really, but could someone please tell us if this is a worthwhile cause or a pure waste of time and effort.
I could use some guidance. I am running stock rom on my Vibrant (2.2, FROYO.UVKB5 to be specific) and it is rooted. I am trying to run Cisco AnyConnect, but have no built-in tun/tap driver (of course). I have used tun.ko installer and it worked for about 5 days. Now, anytime I run tun.ko installer, my phone reboots. I have trashed any programs that I had installed since tun.ko installer and even uninstalled and reinstalled the installer.
I am at a loss as to even where to begin troubleshooting this issue. Would someone please help this humble novice learn more about his problem?
Thank you.
Tun.ko is a Linux kernel module. You could try changing your kernel, or running a terminal and manually installing the module via modprobe and seeing if the phone stays up long enough for you to run a dmesg to look for error messages. I don't know how you can see the panic message as the kernel crashes on a phone, but maybe there is a way. An adb shell might last a little longer than an on-phone terminal in the event of a panic.
I actually went the easy route and am trying to use the Tun.ko installed app from VPN Droid, and getting the reboot issue. It seems to be rebooting when it is doing a check to see if the Tun/Tap module is installed, which it isn't right now. I don't currently have a linux box to build a tun.ko module for my Vibrant kernel to be able to manually install it or I would do that and just forget about the tun.ko installer.
Has anyone else seen this behavior at all? It's not like I have crazy custom ware installed or anything else nuts. I'm a little more advanced than an average user and haven't even jumped past the OEM ROM with ADW launcher. Not really the Dev type, but I'm not exactly afraid to go in and do what needs to be done. I just don't know what to do off hand. XDA-Developers and Google have been my best friends when working with my phone. I've just come to a brick wall on this one.
Flashing a kernel like Bali for 2.2 roms would help. It includes a tun.ko module. More info here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043947
Yeah, I think I'm going to have to suck it up and get into flashing my ROM. I've just been hesitant because even though I have Titanium backup, I know I'll have to go through some downtime to do the flash. When I upgrade, though, I'll keep this to have a device to fall back on during maintenance and flashes.
Help, (PLEASE) I just "re-rooted) my Archos 101it tablet....I missed the setup screen where you fill out all the information on who you are (the developer)...now when I power it on, it gives me the Archos logo, then developers logo (angstrom) but then goes to very itsy bitsy lettering :
The angstrom distribution archos-gen-8
Angstrom 2009.X-stable archos-gen-8 tty1
archos-gen8 log in:
It does not respond to the touch screen. I am just sick inside...I had this tablet since mid-2011 and never did anything much with it, then after a download from Amazon, I started getting this popup saying that certain things could not open...lots of people had this error message, thus the reason for googling to this forum. I thank ANYONE in advance who can help me out...any way to get back to the screen to put in my user information and log in passcodes??? Jeanie
ps...then the new op version (android for Archos) that the person who wrote the tutorial on how to re-root is no longer available. (scream) I will need to know how to download the new op if I ever find it 8-(
I also had the same problem!!: After applying sde versions and trying numerous times to re-download firmware, I finally got my aos back!!! Seems I downloaded the newest version using Chrome and it wasn't copying right, so I followed another forum's advice and used Internet Explorer...it worked!!! Now after a week, I now have a "Like New) Archos 101it. What a learning experience!!!
P.S. I don't really know if it was Chrome or IE, seems I kept downloading different versions of the aos files with the same name...thus it was renaming them
firmware_archos_android_gen8. (2)aos
firmware_archos_android_gen8. (3)aos
well, before I copied the file over to the 101it drive, I took out the (2) or (3), then it worked!!!!
Try to delete SDE, reformat device and flash it again. Use chrulri's method to root it.
I was just wondering if there was any available (or TWRP) or a substitute for a generic tablet
Maybe it's too early but I'm interested too, even for a cyanogenmod rom

My issue are 2 things the constant ads that pop up (minor issue) and second is the space, very low space.... I have an 32gb sd card and I'd like to use that as the primary storage, but since the tablet is kit Kat switching the storage around isn't done the same as its done in jelly bean and from what I read it can only be done by flashing in CMW recovery because ads to sd doesn't always work
I have exactly the same your problems! I can't understand why they partition the main memory when they could use the whole space to install apps... And I want to remove that damn ads popups too!
My model is recognized as softwinner "V11", I'd like to know if CM designed for other similiar tablets works...

Hi guys. I've got an a33 quad core tablet badged ciprotec but I know it's allwinner based (obviously). Have you guys managed to get yours rooted? Mine runs 4.4.2 kvt49l. It's OK for messing around on but I need to practice my developing skills!! Cheers!
That tab is should already rooted I have one too but I found the preinstalled root doesn't work properly. Cant remember quite how i got it working but i think i used supersu to delete and reinstall the root script or I might have had to hook it up to the pc with a bit of software for flashing allwinners that I found. When you do have it rooted get gl2sd if your running kitkat so you can use the external sd for some of the bigger app installs rather than the rather small internal sd, but before that make sure the write permissions are enabled to sd there are a few Apps on the market that can do this. Has anybody heard anything on cwm or twrp yet?
Managed to get it done using vroot! Yay!! It's mine at last!
Hi all,
I've rooted my device and accidentally removed the systemui.apk so now my status bar etc is missing.
So far I've been trying to restore it from several Roms and other user posts, however, it looks like as if the model etc has to match my environment. So here I go, could someone post their systemui.apk???
Cheers!

Windows ADB driver??
I have a new A33 tablet, which I cannot get it rooted, because I cannot find a working Windows ADB driver for it - either for Windows 8.1 x64 or Windows 7 x64.
The MTP driver works (I can transfer files), but I cannot find the "Android" driver for the ADB connection.
I tried the Rockchip "RK driver assistant" - no luck.
If you have a working ADB connection to an Allwinner A33 tablet, could you perhaps share the Windows ADB drivers here?
TIA

A33 Twrp
I made a TWRP for A33, A23,A20 and A31s models over on TechKnow . Some of them are posted but I think I have yet
to post all of them on the Public Downloads... I will make an effort to get them all posted soon. Offhand I do not
recall the specs I used though I am thinking all used gslx Touchscreens.. I will post here again the specs of the Tabs
they are for and a link to where they are posted once I am sure they are up ... The delay in posting them has
been the installer, I was working with another person since I have no A33 on making an installer that will
work on all of the tab models from ADB, also I am working pretty heavily on A31s Dev at present and have
allowed my other projects to fall behind even though some are essentially finished as in this case.
Thanks
