[Q] Atrix + Live Wallpaper = HORRIBLE LAG EVERYWHERE. Suggestions? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My $670 Atrix turns into a $200 G1 when I decide to run a live wallpaper. Scrolling becomes nightmare-ish (especially on the Starlight live wallpaper), and the 3D App screen comes up with 1-2 frames per second, or something to that effect.
I'm using Launcher Pro Plus. Unrooted, undeodexed. This isn't why I bought the "world's most powerful phone". Any solutions?
EDIT: This is exactly what I'm talking about:
See how choppy the transitions and "apps fly in" transition is when you bring up the app drawer on a live wallpaper?

I would say something is maybe wrong with the phone itself. I can run any live wallpaper perfectly whether on stock or modded roms. Can you exchange it for another one still?

I "can" run it, but the homescreen-to-App-drawer animations become choppy, and scrolling down the apps become noticeably choppy as well.
What have you done with your phone so far?

Well I would say the best thing you could do is root it and install gingerblur.Gingerblur can remove all that att bloat slowing it down and plus it gives you options of having hulu, webtop hack, sideloading etc. Also what firmware are you on 4.1.57 or 4.1.26 if your on the latter I would definetly update. Even if you dont wanna root and mod then an update will definetly improve your situation over crappy 4.1.26 its known to be more laggy.

Well actually you can now deodex by using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013093 and you can also have webtop using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12250126&postcount=459 and you probably could update it. go into your about phone settings and check and see if there is one available. Also you could root it using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060 which should also let you enable sideloading and tethering. Thats not a bad choice of stuff to have. It's not gingerblur but still all worthy things to do and have.

I really, really hate Motorola now. I should have gone for the Nexus S, but no 720p recording is just unforgivable.... but then again it costs $100 less.
Oh, and the Tegrazone games are NOT worth getting an Atrix. At all. Screen is not big enough to notice the difference anyway, and there are way too many good "non-Tegra" Android games.

I really like my Atrix, but now might take it back to Best Buy. Data speed is to slow and I use my mobile hotspot connection daily for work. I went back to my white iPhone 4 for now, because sending documents back to the office was taking to long on the Atrix.
Again, I really like the Atrix phone but going to return it and pre-order the BlackBerry PlayBook. I know 2 wrongs don't make a right.

Guys mine runs fine with live wallpaper, stock 1.5.7.
I think a new rom for a system slowdown is a little extreme.
Try searching this forum for solutions before attempting a rom fix.

I'm running a stock Bell one and no slow down with live wallpapers.
The only lag I ever see is the first few seconds when it loads up.
Is this doing it for all live wallpapers?

With all live wallpapers:
- Phone takes about 4 seconds to respond to a wake up power button push.
- App drawer icons fly in animation is choppy.
- App vertical scrolling is choppy.
With some live wallpapers (e.g. Starlight):
- Choppy homescreen swiping.
When I go back to a non-Live wallpaper, everything's smooth and fast again. Mine is a Bell ATRIX so I don't have 1.5.7

Im in the same boat as you. As soon I run a live wallpaper the phone turns crap. Using the free launcher pro on gingerblur and version 1.57 so deodexed and no bloatware doesn't help. Living in aus makes this difficult to return too

I think there is something wrong with starlight due to our screen's resolution.
Other live wall paper seen to work fine on my phone but starlight lags the home screen swiping.
I've noticed that with stralight, when you swipe to the next screen, the background swipes past the next screen's background just a little bit and jumps back (no matter how slowly or fast you swipe to the next screen)

True. That only happens with Starlight. But what about the others? The Apps drawer flies in with a very choppy animation, and the same can be said about the vertical scrolling.

When using the nexus S wallpaper that comes with gingerblur, the lag is not as bad as when using paper forest but its still annoying and simply appalling for the worlds most powerful smart phone

Good, I'm starting to think this isn't something unique to my Atrix -that it's not defective.
I just cannot believe a Tegra 2 phone would STRUGGLE so badly with live wallpapers. Unbelievable. I will sell this POS once the new HTC EVO 3D arrives (provided it has good battery life).

All i know is.. I'm running anipet aquarium with a whole ****load of fish with them swimming at various speeds and it runs perfect and causes no lag at all. Maybe it is a starlight problem cause I'm on gladiatrix with all possible mods(webtop, hdmi, hulu, multitouch keyboard etc.) and I have no problems on launcherpro or stock motoblur. You bell customers probably need an update. Theres a difference between 4.1.26 and 4.1.57 for those of us on att. Bell just gotta get there asses in gear!

I just tried out anipet aquarium. Made the homescreen swiping noticeably less smooth, and of course hitting the app drawer button brought a choppy fly in animation.
So are you saying it was laggy on 4.1.26 with live wallpapers and became smooth after the update? Coz DarkRyoushii has the update and is reporting an eually poor performance.

all wallpapers made by the same guy, starlight, nightfall, eastern glow makes the phone laggy because i think they dont support high res screens...
Other ones like jumpgate, or twisted colors, my phone is super smooth

[Q] Homescreen Lag

My Atrix runs nice and smoothly for the most part. Apps are smooth as butter. My only issue is lag whenever I return to the homescreen. If I wake up the device after a while, or I return to the homescreen after using an app for a while, and I try to swipe to another homescreen, there's always a 1 second delay. It's not the biggest deal in the world, but it gets annoying seeing it all the time. The same thing happens with any launcher I try to use. Live wallpapers don't really make it lag more. I do use lots of Widgets, so maybe that's causing it. I don't know. Does anyone else have any insight on this?
I have the same issue. Using Lpro. I thought if I put into memory it won't happen but it doesn't help. A bit irritating.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
yes, im experiencing this too, though I do not have a solution. Is what you're experiencing like right when you unlock the phone, and you try and swipe between homescreens, it's kind of like slow motion until like 2 seconds later, then it becomes full speed and buttery smooth?

Exactly. Does it happen to you when you exit an app as well?
I wonder whether this is a result of the way Tegra 2 handles processes. Maybe it slows down ADW (or other launcher) when not in use, but doesn't speed up quickly enough.
Hopefully future Gingerbread updates help fix this.
So...
I guess this is just an unfortunate side effect of Froyo not being optimized for dual-core processors? That sucks, especially considering that I haven't seen this happening with any other Android phone, dual-core or not.
I had a homescreen lag on my N1 with stock froyo, on my Nexus S with gingerbread. My MT4g hat no lag with froyo and sense. Attic has a lag occasionally. Ithink it is bad programming in android or the graphic overlay.

Hmm. That makes me think the upcoming Gingerbread update won't fix this.
I wonder whether there's anything I can freeze. I've already frozen the stock launcher (I use ADW) but it hasn't helped.

I can't speak for newer gingerbread versions. I returned my Nexus S after 3 weeks and it shipped with the original, too early released version of gingerbread that was horrible buggy. Hopefully, they fixed that in later versions. Let's see what version we get for the Atrix.
Is it just a select few people having this issue? As I browse the forums, most people say that the Atrix is perfect and has no lag.
Am I going to have to remove widgets to get rid of this homescreen stutter?
Grrr. This issue is like a grape juice stain on your white carpet. It's little, but it's there.
I'll stop bumping this, I guess not enough people are having this problem.

[Q] Eeeeew App Drawer Stinks

Wow I can't believe that either Android or HTC took such a serious step backwards with this new applications screen. I mean this stinks of way back in my Windows 6.x days. My EVO 4G applications drawer would just scroll and scroll so quickly and smoothly from top to bottom, relative to how fast and hard the finger gesture was. Now here we are again with this lame stepped scrolling app screen environment. You flick down and the screen moves exactly one set of five rows and slams to a stop, like you have reached the end. So you have to flick it again to get another whole five rows. In fact if you move the screen manually and slowly you can even see a thin white break across the screen where the stops are forced to happen. This sucks so much compaired to the beautiful, smooth, fluid animation we had before. Pleeeeease tell me there is a way to change this.

Install Launcher Pro, ADWex, Launcher7, GoLauncher....I'm sure I'm missing dozens of them....Launcher Pro is the smoothest and most AOSP experience, though ADW is free with no nag and OSS, ADWex is the pay version, Launcher 7 is a Wp7 copycat, very smooth...not too feature rich...Go Launcher I've never used, but, seen good things from....
But you lose your sense widgets....
Screw rosie, I'll throw everything away to do away with that hideous beast

I guess my lag wasn't that bad, but i would have thought that a dual core proc and 1gig of ram would have been enough to fix that.
Of all the things to complain about. I only knew it was a matter of time before people started acting like it was the end of the world because of something as minor as an app drawer. It was the same with the EVO.

Nope I went straight from my EVO 4G to this and my ROM of choice was always the trusty Sprint Lover's rom, which was the original sense.
Launcher Pro Plus (the $3 is worth it) works very smoothly (I can scroll the whole app list in 1 swipe, no lag). I got Fancy Widgets free from the Amazon Apps store awhile back, and it makes up for the lost Sense widgets. I got addicted to having the scrolling lower launcher bar - there's no way I can go back to just 3 buttons that I can't assign
I actually like the vertical paginated style in the Sense 3.0 drawer. It reminds me of the horizontal paginated in ADW, which is what I always used. I wouldn't go so far to say it's a major step backwards, though. It's not really the end of the world.

yup, people complains for everything this days, remember the 30 days return policy mi gente!!
I remember seeing a review that you're able to pinch the app draw to see all the apps at the same time, then select the screen with the app you want. Just like the home screen on the regular Evo.
Is this how it works? Cause that would eliminate a reason to fast scroll for me & also explain why there's a line every 5 rows
lol @ some of you guys getting upset at people who don't like the app drawer.... calm down little fellas... we aren't insulting you.
I love the phone so far, hate the app drawer... using anything other than sense 3.0 on this phone right now would be silly IMO.

[Q] How many of you are using Live Wallpapers?

I really want to use them because they are so cool, but I tried a lightning one and it just seemed to move a little laggy. Swiping, opening things, you could tell slightly it was a little slower. Not sure how drastic battery life is cut short though.
Anyone use them, or just use their own custom wallpapers? Or any other thoughts on Live Wallpapers in general?
I use them every now n then. I experience no lag at all with them on. it might just be that particular wallpaper not optimized for tablet or ICS. plus not too many out there that's HD. I rather use a highbdefinition wallpaper that showcases the Primes great display and colors. There are some really good live wallpapers out there though. They don't really drain the battery like people like to assume. Some are made better than others.
Some great ones are; Digital Hive(free), SunRise(free), Bubbles, Christmas HD, Season Zen(free), and Touch Ripples(free). Those all work n look great on the Prime with no lag. All this live wallpaper talk makes me wanna apply one now..lol
I've been using black hole that came with ICS. It works great. I use the ones that came with the system because their made for ICS. Doesnt effect the speed or scrolling.
I have been using the water/whale paper pre loaded. Works fine while indicating the battery level. Haven't noticed any lag or other issues.
.
I try them on occasion too, and then switch away when bored to something like Windows Vista Wallpapers (and Win7, the dramatic Landscape stuff) They are all out there, modified for the Primes resolution
I just tried Black hole because of the other post, and I like it much more than I thought I would. We will see, by end of day I will be looking for something else, LOL!
Anyone try the "semi-live" Asus "Day Scene"? Changes with time of day, so it's really just 4-5 static WP's. Nice, but the "dusk " one s horrible. Looks like someone peed on the landscape, LOL!
Installed the Skyrim live wallpaper, looks and feels pretty smooth.
Guess you have to like the game though.
Digital Hive is awesome...When you're not doing anything on the desktop, it's pretty passive, but during touch actions, it's cool as hell.

[Q] System sluggishness, lag.

Hey there all,
I was wondering... my Tablet S device is quite sluggish, delays between swipes, opening & closing programs, typing etc.
Does anyone else have this issue?
I tried reformatting 3 or 4 times to no avail.
Latest version of the Honeycomb OTA update 3.2.1.
Also, flash on the web is ridiculously slow and causes extreme slowdown. For e.g. on the Youtube website, the flash applet itself causes lag when activated (Using Opera Mobile) and I can only watch up to 480p. Anything above that lags and is unwatchable --- I remember reading that this is due to the hardware limitations of the Tegra 2 chip.
Anyhoo,
If anyone has any ideas or just helpful tips on how to make the device run smoother, could you let me know? I bought this device two days ago and am regretting it hard atm hahah. My phone (Gala SII feels so much smoother/responsive than this tablet)
Thanks all.
Well mate I dont have any experience like that, in fact this is the smoothest experience for me yet (i have a evo 3d )

Oh?
My Tablet S is experiencing some sluggishness too.
Is the UK firmware better than the US firmware? Why did you flash it anyway?
Have you tried using an alternative launcher like ADW EX? The stock Home launcher from Sony is pretty poor. If you drag slow enough to make the preview windows appear at the top of the screen, the frame rate drops significantly. Always found the swipes incredibly responsive otherwise.
I've got a nice performance boost from rooting, then using AdFree and Overclock Widget.

Can't go above 1 Ghz, but you can set it and raise the minimum clock speed to get some more juice out of it. Might help the OP with some sluggishness during basic use.
I have no such problem at all with my tablet s wifi version, even when tethering with my iphone.
Why dont you take it back to the shop and make a complaint?
Thanks to everyone that replied with all those helpful comments.
I have tried everything, standard wallpaper. Format. Rooted.
Hmm maybe it is just my device?
BT keyboard input is really delayed for example. WiFi works due to that workaround (WiFi Locker app) I found using search, though I can't give much praise to the signal strength!
I just assumed the Tablet S was meant to be a bit sluggish (ref: CNET review and others: most say the tablet is a bit sluggish)
Ho dang, unfortunately I can't take it back for repair as I purchased it from eBay! x)
Maybe it's a hardware fault, a certain part(s) aren't working at optimum speeds/levels. I'll try taking it into a service center anyway.
Oh, and i'll try that Overclock widget!
Will report back with findings.
Thanks guys.

I have similar issue. The only solution I'd suggest:
(1) Get a cache remover like "1 Tap Cleaner Free" to remove cache. Cache can be very big ('00MB) in a few weeks.
(2) Get a task watch/killer, to find if there are any resident apps that keep reading activities/data of the tablet. You may then use the killer to kill them or uninstall them. (Frankly, many of those apps available in Play Store are susceptible. They might just want to get something from the user. So sorry that I could have no recommendation. But installing one and remove it afterwards may be fine.)
(3) Sometimes, a simple reboot helps.
Mine is working alright, though not terrific, and is having other issues to resolve. Taking back for service is always the last resort.

[Q] Laggy, choppy scrolling

Have a stock DNA and I've noticed laggy or choppy scrolling in apps such as Facebook, Instagram, even browsing the web. Is this related to Sense or a setting in the DNA?
I came from a Google Galaxy Nexus previously and didn't have this bug...the scrolling on that phone was very smooth and continuous.
have you installed anything that could be slowing it down, My DNA is far smoother than any phone ive used before, including a galaxy nexus.
You could try checking the gpu rendering option in the developer options and see if that helps
The phone will get laggy if it overheats. Is the phone hot?
Sense?

Hmm...I don't have anything abnormal installed and I'm fully stock. Also, the device never gets hot (even when my GNex did.)
I suppose I could do a factory reset and try installing apps one at a time to find out if anything is slowing it down but that seems like such a PITA considering this is a quad-core phone w/ 2GB ram.
I was hoping someone else could confirm that their DNA was doing the same thing. =/

I've been having choppy scrolling in settings, trying to find what can be adjusted to make it stop showing black spots when scolling fast. But not having any lag per se.
I too have somewhat choppy scrolling in a few apps (news apps in particular). Stock also and nothing in settings or apps I have seems to affect it, nor does the heat of the device. Got a replacement phone after 3 weeks for a different problem and reinstalled everything slowly, checking to see if anything affected this issue. Nothing did. Cannot read articles as fast as on prior phones because of this, but have just adjusted my scrolling/reading habits.
Yeah it seems to be a problem sadly. In terms of loading speed and such the phone fairs fine, its just choppy as hell, I don't get it. Htc really dropped the ball on this one, with an s4 pro there's no excuse for this kind of performance. As far as I can tell its a mix of poor engineering and sense. You could probably fix the home screen choppiness with another launcher, as far as apps go....I have no clue :/

I'm really thinking twice bout this phone because of these issues with lag and choppy scrolling. It doesn't feel this bad on my gs3 and is none existent on the nexus 4. I might try out the note 2 after this I really love this screen compared to the nexus 4
Droid DNA
This device is much smoother than any device I have owned and that includes the SGS3 which I currently own. The only time I see lag are in 3rd party apps which need to be updated for our device

I second this. Even with the occassionally choppy scrolling in some apps (only a few on my phone, mind you), I still love how fast and smooth the DNA performs generally speaking and would not trade it for a other device currently on market. I think some of this will get better as apps are updated for our device.

Third. It's an on and off kind of thing that seems to vary from app to app. Skype scrolling lags like a mofo but USA Today and Opera have no problem whatsoever.
I have over 30+ apps installed and I got Facebook, Instagram and YouTube in the background and my phone still doesn't lag...maybe you got a defective device...don't bash the phone because you are having problems with it. Go get a replacement.

I love how everyone blames every little problem on the chance its a defective device. For the love of Christ we're talking about scrolling here, its a software issue, its not POSSIBLE for that to change on its own. Seriously, its not defective. My device lags on stock launcher with NOTHING installed. It just takes the right widget and app placement on the home screen. I'll gladly take a video of the phone lagging on scrolling after a FULL wipe if you really want me to. But frankly I don't need to because it's a well discussed issue and I don't need to take my time proving a problem that's already been brought up so many times. Seriously, go on Google and type in 'htc dna choppiness'. Accept the fact the HTC made a mistake (and everyone does, just in different ways) and move on.

If your device is lagging on the launcher then something is wrong, that is NOT normal. I can make a video of me opening up every app known to man on my phone then scrolling on my widget invested homescreen with no lag, but I don't have to because just like almost everyone else with a DNA, there isn't lag.

No lag/choppiness for me either. I've been multitasking most of the day today too, music, fb, instagram, forum apps etc. It's super smooth.
Only place I noticed choppiness is scrolling side to side in play music
Maybe some of the apps just need to be updated to work correctly with 1080p

I'd appreciate it, if you don't mind.
My DNA is about the smoothest Android phone I've owned, and I've owned a LOT of 'em.
I don't doubt you, but I would like to see the lag....
Thanks for the offer!

x2. Would love to see a video because at the moment, I'm streaming pandora, using a forum app/FB and going through NFL mobile and I'm getting no lag...
This is honestly smoother than my iPhone 4 was...and we all know how fluid iOS can be.
