Will there ever be a root method for 1.5.7 without having to flash back to 1.2.6? Just curious if anybody thinks its possible? I'm on my second atrix now because of an update issue I was having with the first, now I have my phone all set up just how I need it, and just dont have the time right now to do it all over again...

Even if there is one (dont know any), it shouldn't be released as all the root exploits will get patched up in the next update expected this month (HSUPA & maybe voice fix and hopefully 2.3). It happens with every phone every manufacture. I am sure we will have to find another root exploit after the next update so might as well wait.

Is leak 3 the same as the ota update that was released? If not can someone tell me how to update from v3 to OTA
next time just search but here is the explanation:
technically they are the same thing except the OTA has a different bootloader from v3 and that means you CANNOT root the v3 (believe me i have tried and almost bricked my phone).
ALSO if you are on v3 you CANNOT upgrade to the OTA manually because it your phone will recognize it as a downgrade because it has all the same files except for the bootloader even though it is a different file.
On the other hand when Froyo comes out (if it comes out for the droid eris) you probably will be able to upgrade to that but that will be a long ways away. So sadly you're stuck with v3 right now.

Thanks for not bombing me simple answer
My Friend has leak 3 and well we wanted to make sure its the same thing...
is it possible to hack the bootloader?
Man. Im glad I was patient. I was tempted to leak before root came out. But I was sold on root and ota. Ota didn't come out quick enough so I had decided to go with root. It's just more flexible to go that route anyway. And theoretically you can unroot if you flash the downgrade to 1.5 Rom and jump on to 2.1 Ota. But with root you can always keep your options open. Well if you have insurance, you can always get a replacement when you lose it, and root that.

Okay, here is the situation: I have an Atrix (obviously) that I rooted using the Gingerbreak.exe downloaded from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046626. I just tried to update my phone to Gingerbread using the OTA update in About Phone and it failed; I’m assuming it is because I have rooted the device (if not please correct me and tell me what I did wrong). So I hopped onto these forums looking for a way to undo the root, or a way to get the update to work, and my eyes have glazed over. Could someone please tell me how to unroot my atrix before i use it as a hockey puck
I posted a thread very similar to this. You should look around.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184199
Now honestly, I have no idea why it didnt let you update, since I used SuperOneClick with Gingerbreak and it seemed to work after updating, Didn't really test out any SU apps but I still had it. To think of it, It's kinda useless for me to state that, however it states success...
One of the options for you, since you are still on Froyo and apparently rooted are to install Gingerbreak 1.2. I'm not 100% sure if it will work, but i do know it can't harm your device.
After you install Gingerbreak 1.2, you should root again, then after the reboot, reopen the app and unroot. This method should be flawless since you did re-root with the app. But again, Not 100% sure. And right now you can unlock your bootloader and just start loading if you'd like. That is a much easier and safer way to do it. Plenty of tuts on Android Dev forum here.
lol don't worry about unrooting. I'll tell you that much.
It's not so much of a problem with root, but moreso the pre-test that accompanies the OTA. If you fail it because you use Titanium to clear out bloatware and stuff like that. even if you remove root, you still won't be able to upgrade. Instead, just use this method.
Just download the Automated Upgrade for PC Users and let your phone upgrade. All your data should still be there, but backup before just in case. Oh, and if you wanna root again after you upgrade (cause i mean, why WOULDN'T you want root?!), just use the preinstall method (hehe I'll leave this for you to search. it'll be good practice for the future, i promise =])
happy upgrading!

I am currently using Motorola Atrix 4G, OS 2.3.4, system version 4.5.91. I have done two modifications on my handset
(i) rooted using moto-fastboot flash preinstall preinstall.img
(http://www.digitaltweaker.com/andro...t-motorola-atrix-4-5-91-on-gingerbread-2-3-4/)
(ii) Updated radio baseband version from 1.77.30 to 1.87 (flashing with RSDLite)
Now I tried to update my phone to 4.5.141. I used both the method provided by Motorola. Using OTA and from sdcard. Updates ended with one triangle during the process, and when I rebooted it says Update failed. Then I tried through Motorola Software update, but it says "There is no update for this device. Try it later on."
I went through the different posts here and came to know the possibilities of bricking the phone in updating a rooted phone.
I spent lots of time for unrooting the device, updating to 4.5.91 but I didn't get any convenient and helpful topic.
Can someone let me know,
(i) How can I unroot first (I went through aroot script method, but I didn't feel comfortable with that method)
(ii) how can I update it safely without bricking my phone. I want to avoid flashing with ROM.
Waiting for someones response.
I am pretty sure you can use petes one click root to undo your root or maybe even super oneclick
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600&highlight=how+to+root+internation+atrix
that thread has a how to root with petes one click and i am positive that it has a un root option to it as well

Thanks for your response. I have not used super oneclick method for rooting my device. So will it be safe. Any way will have a try and let you know.
Try this:
Put update file on SD card, named update.zip
Put phone in recovery mode
select update from sd card
Choose the udpate.zip file
Watch the process to determine what error stops the process. In my case, I had removed a file the update process was looking for.
CAREFUL
I was rooted. I hid the root using a tool on the market. After the update all seemed fine. But it BROKE my wifi. Now wifi disconnects every 20 minutes or so. I dont think this is related to the fact I was rooted since the same thing happened to many people and the update did nothing noteable that I can see. If I had it to do over again, I would skip the update since the phone worked perfectly before the update. There are several threads here and on the motorola forum about the wifi breaking. I have tried all of the suggested fixes but nothing has worked. I have been a member here a long time with many phones. There are more stories about people breaking their Atrix than any other phone. Anyway, its a fact the update broke a lot of phones, even phones that had no mods whatsoever. Be cautious. Supposedly the engineers at Motorola are looking at this for a possible fix but nothing is guaranteed.

Thanks for your valuable suggestion. You are right that now it's working like a charm and I don't want to do experiment on my phone unless I get some safest alternative. I will consider your points before doing anything to my Phone. Thanks again.
So I have a completely original Neo, still on the on the original Gingerbread (2.3.3) it had and I don't quite know how to proceed.
The only thing I do know is that if at all possible I don't want to unlock the bootloader.
Ideally I want to back everything up before I do anything but from my understanding Titanium Backup needs root to back everything up so that creates a bit of a catch 22. Similarly installing CWM so that I can access recovery is risky and could break everything so I'd want a backup first but for that I need either root or recovery so another catch 22. So what would be the safest option?
Also I want to update to ICS, I figure it's about time I get my phone current, but I don't know in what order I should do that in either...
Should I gingerbreak my Gingerbread and then update to ICS?
Should I just update to ICS and then root?
Should I upgrade using generic firmware to a version supporting the zergRush root, then root and then continue updating to current ICS?
I'm fairly confident I can get everything right first time on any method (and I know what all the methods are/am to not to lazy to research the methods myself) but I just can't figure out the safest course of action here...other than staying on Gingerbread for the duration of my phone contract.
Any help you can give me is appreciated.
Start by reading the stickies in the development section, do some reading and you'll know
look at the stickies in neo v section too
Ok so you're saying I should follow the "noob's guide" exactly and try a zergRush Root first? (Skip unlocking the bootloader since it'm not interested in cutoms roms with custom kernels) and then install CWM and make a nandroid backup?
Ok....but that still doesn't tell me whether I should update first or root first?
Also I can't seem to tell from it's thread whether the zergRush root works on the latest ICS (I don't see mention of .431 in the thread with .62 apparently being the last version that worked so that would be a no then?)?
Also my case is different because I could actually even still root with Gingerbreak if that was best/safest unlike most people trying to root (I never downgraded either so I wouldn't be exposed to the 0% issue).
ZergRush method doesn't work on fw's after .42.
There is another method, which you can find in sticky thread in general section.
First update, then root, as root is gone after flas/update.
p.s. whatever you do, just don't flash android 2.3.2 on your phone after you flash 2.3.4, but there is no really point in going to that old fw, same as there is no point in still being on 2.3.3.
Root is only gone if I don't update OTA

Really? Thanks for telling me that..
I know that, I also know that you can't update from 2.3.3 to 4.0.4(which you said it's your initial goal, in your first post) via OTA. Or you can?
As far as I know I can but I admit I haven't checked yet. I don't see why once it's available for my region through the PC Suite it shouldn't also be available OTA.
Try and let us know.
It's not same if you're updating from x.x.x to x.x.y and from x.x.x to y.y.y, in first case OTA is possible, in second case I kinda doubt
I also didn't try, but if I remember correctly that's how it is.
Yeah but surely it should then just be 3 steps? So from x.x.x to x.x.y to y.y.y...that would would make sense to me anyways
Still reading up on a bit of other stuff then I'll check

hope it helps..
So, currently I am running Stock with root injected and the bootloader is unlocked, and the only real tweak i have going with the device is Google Wallet. I'm at work and suddenly my phone starts asking me to preform an OTA update...I went a head an deferred the update for a few days to determine the best way to go through with this.
1)I assume this is going to break my root when i do it and it will relock my bootloader, am i correct about this?
2)If it does, then Google Wallet will stop working also, right?
3) If it will do the above, how can i put a stop to this OTA
4) If its not possible to stop this update and i will loose all my features, do i need to go a head and de-activate google wallet on my device?
5) has anyone with a rooted device gone through with this update yet, i know it just popped up in the last hour or so, but i am looking for any advice i can get because ideally i want to keep my root, unlocked bootloader and GWallet working.
My update failed
I'm rooted running stock with a few little tweaks (nothing I can't live without). The initial update failed. I saved root using Voodoo, unrooted, and ran the update again. It failed the second time. I'm not inclined to go to much more trouble until I find out if the update is worth it and if I can maintain root... I'm not willing to give that up just yet
Definitely do not accept the update, even if it asks you every 5 mins
There has already been a reported brick and I know it has a new boot loader in it. So its safe to assume that Google wallet will not work lol. The best course of action is to wait for a beast dev to find a way to help.
