Rooting Question - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I play some games that I cannot backup and have no way of saving the data (Gun Bros) without rooting. I really do not want to lose the time I spent leveling and buying weapons again.
Is there anyway to backup Gun Bros without rooting?
If I do root will I still over OTA updates aka 2.3?
I was not planning on putting a ROM on it just rooting it so I could use titanium backup to back up all of my data, would this cause any problems?
Thanks in advance,
Justin

Rooting wipes your data. At least using the method that's stickied in the dev forum, I'm not sure about other methods.

as stated above, rooting will wipe your phone. you will not receive OTA updates, but the tbolt dev community is growing so when 2.3 leaks, you can bet someone on xda will make it available before verizon does. titanium backup has proly been installed on more rooted devices than any other app (besides maybe clockwork recovery), and i have yet to see a single report of it mucking up a phone. the user can muck up a phone by deleting essential system apps, but that is not the fault of titanium backup
i assure you the benefits of rooting your tbolt far outweigh the inconvenience of restarting a game

[Q] Any way to root without wiping?

Hey guys I was just wondering if there's any way to root without wiping. I have way too many apps (with settings that are too specific and games that I've gone too far in). I'm not that new to the whole rooting thing (I had a rooted Motorola Droid) but any help would be appreciated.
NO... there is absolutely no way
Hmm so is there a way to backup apps (with their settings and everything) so I can restore them after I wipe and root?

No way to do that.

Sure there is buy the full titanium backup and learn how to use its backup feature

I don't think there is a way. Even temp rooted, I couldn't get much of anything to work so I highly doubt Titanium Backup can do anything.
Titanium backup cant do anything without root. Im looking for a way to back everything up? does anyone have a solution? Mostly the cyanogen mod/system settings and installed apps.
Would an SD Card or Flash Drive work for backing up his stuff?

[Q] Froyo to GB root loss.

My wife just received a x2 as a replacement for her x. It has froyo on it, if I root it to restore some apps with ti backup from a previous back up, and then do the gb ota will there be any problems other than losing root.

If I understand correctly you will not be able to use titanium backup to restore what you back up if you lose root, so backing up seems like a waste

You should sbf back to Froyo and update to gingerbread pre-root if you don't wish to lose app data.

Haven't done the ota yet, still running froyo. Was going to, root, restore some apps that are no longer available in the market, and then ota. She does not care about having a rooted phone, she just doesnt wamt to lose those apps. If I knew how to pull them from the phone I would just do that, but I'm no developer. They're books mostly. I have a thundercrap, so I'm not that familiar with the moto stuff.
Titanium Backup is a root app. If you backup with Titanium backup, do the OTA to GB and lose root how do you plan on restoring what you backed up?
Like EvilTim said earlier, what is the sense of backing up if you do not plan on running GB rooted?
Already have a backup from old phone, am going to use old sd card and restore from ti before I do the ota. I just want to make sure if I do the ota over a rooted froyo all that will happen is lose root. On the tbolt if you flash an ota over some rooted roms it will brick you, and I don't want that to happen. If this won't work can someone tell me how to pull a market downloaded app from the phone so it can be installed on the new phone. I have root explorer on the old phone if that helps.
Verizon recommends you do a factory reset before upgrading, while this may not be necessary, if you encounter an issue after upgrading you will most likely have to sbf and start over

I have never done a factory reset before an ota, but that's a new one to me. This was somewhat helpful, I think ill just tell her it's not possible to save it.
what apps is she trying to save? if it's not available in the market, you can always find the apk on the net. if it's books, save the books from your sd card to your hd and then put them back on the sd card after you update to gb.
It doesn't seem people are understanding what your're asking.
If you have a rooted Froyo phone you can restore a Titanium backup of apps from another phone (using that phone's SD card). Then you can do an OTA update to Gingerbread. Those apps will still be available, but you will lose root.
You may want to use P3's rooted GB though... there may be other apps she wants to backup/restore in the future with Titanium.
Thank you xeno, you understood.

I'm pretty sure that in order to restore those apps into the new GB phone, you'll need root. Titanium Backup will not run without root, as it needs to make changes to both system files and permissions.
It didn't work, exactly. However, I improvised. By going into the ti backup directory and going through the files I extracted the apk files and that turned then them into installable apks. Lost the data, so games were started from beginning, but they were installed.

So, you're saying you restored the files to a rooted 2.2.2 phone and then did an OTA update to 2.3.3? That should work for keeping apps.
If you didn't restore before going to OTA 2.3.3 then I don't think Titanium would work for you.
Yes what you are wanting to do will work root restore than ota

Backing up entire phone with locked bootloader?

Backing up entire phone with locked bootloader?
Sorry if this is a superfluous question. Yes, I'm rooted but my bootloader is locked because I've zero confidence I can get my phone repaired in my country(not US!) should anything go wrong. The tech support in my country tend to be really strict and very thorough in checking things out, so any excuses won't fly. I'm aware, btw, that the bootloader controls a set of fuses and unlocking it burns them. Trying to relock the bootloader is only superficial since there's no way a software can solder back or replace those fuses.
Thing is: how do I get about backing up my entire phone(user settings, apps, apps settings, etc.) without unlocking the bootloader? I've been reading on this and that but I'm still unsure if Titanium Pro is as capable as Nandroid. Some people said you can use Titanium Pro but others caution against using it for backing up system settings because it can apparently screw up your phone.
I even read about something called bootstrapping but it seems that any possible apks I could try, are probably long outdated and prone to crashing since they won't have any support for Gingerbread and certain features.
Any advice? Sorry for asking such a dumb question when everyone is happily unlocking their bootloaders. If this can't be done, it's okay. I'll just have to bear with the tedious issue of setting up my phone all over again.
Use titanium backup. Only thing it doesn't backup is the os. Everything else will be saved to the sdcard.

TiBu will back up your apps, app data, system apps, system data, but is nothing like a nandroid. A nandroid backup will create a full backup from which you can restore your phone to the state it was in when you created the backup.
A TiBu backup will not screw up your phone. The problems arise if you flash a different ROM, and then restore system data from your TiBu backups.
What I would do is backup everything with TiBu, but never restore system data from the backup. I routinely restore app data such as GoSMS, Enhanced Email, games, etc. without problems. I don't restore system apps unless I absolutely have to restore something which is broken, and I never restore system data.
Hope this helps.

[Q] Rom installing, favorite backup

Ya, I have been reading through reviews and did some searches but I respect you guys that have been in the trenches in your opinions of good and bads of Android backup programs. What is the best backup program for reinstalling phone numbers, IMs and program data after flashing my phone?
Thanks for all of your time and patience.
I wish there was one app that would do everything.
I use Titanium for apps, SMS Backup and Restore app, and Call Backup and Restore app. Make sure you make the apps backup to your external sd card.
I use Titanium for my tablet...always came though.
I am using the backup function in MyPhoneExplorer, it as least has restored my phone lists in the past.
I haven't rooted my phone yet (I need my phone to work so I am making for what the best "BKM (Best Known Method)" is before proceding.
To root in the past I've used z4root, is that still usable with an AT&T note or is that not recommended?
Z4root is dead. I really liked it too.

Everything is in the first post. Go for it!
Thank you very much RangerCaptain!
Sucks about z4root, made things very easy.
Might still work since my phone is still 2.3 but I will use your procedure and Odin seems to be used by all the recommended ROMs.
Thanks again to you and all!
Good luck. Take your time. Its a good hobby.

[Q] unrooted backup with My Backup

My understanding is that when rooting some of the stock apps disappear, eg flashlight, soundcloud.
Does my backup successfully backup these apps without root?
so after I root it, I can restore them
if not, is there any other method to get a proper backup of apps and data without root on the HOX+
thanks

You can backup/restore the apps, but not the data (so your score and progress in games and settings in apps will be lost).

I'm a big mobile gamer so this would really suck. Please tell me there is a way to backup game settings so when the day comes that i can root my ATT version of the HOX+ that these get saved and carry over????

Basically for a newb android user who just purchased this device, what is the best backup app to use on a stock device? Then once i unlock bootloader do i need to restore from a backup or does unlocking bootloader not affect any apps or settings that need restored?
Once I finally Root my device, what is the best root backup app if i wanted to flash roms on the regular and not lose any game progress/data or apps in the process?
So many dang backup apps in the marketplace can't tell which one would be best and you really wouldn't know until you used one, unlocked phone, then find out the app didn't work! LOL. Trying not to find out the hard way, thanks!
ok, I've made a backup of everything I can with My Backup, which as stated, wont keep app data.
I've also made a backup using adb backup
when I attempt root (I've already nuked one HOX+, so going softly softly this time) I'm going to try restoring the adb backup first and hope for success. If not, fall back on the My Backup...backup
Once rooted I intend to use Titanium Backup *root*, I used that on my sensation and it never gave me any trouble
