So today I was trying out a Sense version of froyo on my hero, didn't like it as im way too used to launcherPro now anyway I made a Nandroid backup yesterday, did a restore using amonRa recovery, it said the restore was successful... but
At first it didn't want to boot, just completely froze on bootscreen, then after a batt pull i loaded up recov again, wipes everything and then restored...
This time I actually fell asleep while waiting for the phone to boot, in the middle of the day actually , after I woke up the phone looked like the one i used to have but, nothing worked none of the apps that i had worked, half of them were actually completely gone, keyboard didn't work (scandinavian), only the stock ADW launcher worked...
Also when the phone booted it ran the setup wizard, just as if I would have done a fresh ROM install??? I had no contacts, no SMS, no pics, nothing
ISN'T NANDROID SUPPOSED TO BACKUP EVERYTHING and not just the core ROM files?
also if I remove my SD card I find my phone rebooting in matter of seconds :S
I really need help with this, I absolutely dont want to download all my ~100 Apps from the market, setup all of my 5 homescreen and ask all of my friends for their number again that would take weeks!
Try a full wipe, then restore the previous Rom
but that means that i'll have to install all my apps again, reset all my setting, everything... Its my last resort but I'd like to atleast know why this got so ****ed up? isn't nandroid supposed to create an exact image of the phone, and even be transferable to other phones of the same model ?
I'm really pissed of atm, I have put so much into personalizing my phone and now I have to go trough this all again maybe just wait for another ROM I'd like to use and just start over
If you did a nandroid your apps should be restored too : )
A full wipe doesn't touch SD, the SD contains the nandroid so it all should be there. The nandroid you restored sounds like it corrupted the Rom on the phone you didn't wipe. Always wipe before : )
I did a complete wipe and after that a nandroid restore, still nothing

Hello,
im am using the latest official ROM by HTC (2.73.405.5).
Can i upgrade to another ROM (Modaco or smth else..) without losing all my settings, apps, messages and files?
Thank you,
m0jo.
..or can i create a nandroid backup, install a new rom, and if i dont like it, just roll back to my old rom with all my settings using nandroid restore?
*bump* sorry guys
if you have the recovery image, yes a nandroid backup will keep all your settings.
including app settings and everything, like EVERYTHING ahahah
If you read modaco's post with his rom, I think he says you dont have to "wipe" (from the recovery image) if you come from your version. (double check though).
so i think youd keep all if not then most of your settings if you dont wipe and just install the rom.
ps i thought i read somewhere that his rom might not be up to speed if you dont wipe first, but by all means, if you have a nandroid backup, then try it out!
(ps i found this out the hard way but updating back to ruu from htc website erases reovery image) not that this is even that relevent
just make a nandroid backup, then update without wiping. if it doesn't work restore the backup and find another way or fix the problem, if it works be happy...
thank you.
but next time pls tell me that all my settings ARE gone AND my phone loses a lot of features so i have to reinstall the official ROM... :/
i cant see how you lost your settings if you didnt do a wipe... but then thats why we said do a nandroid backup! so restore to that from your recovery image
all my settings are gone, i had to configure my phone like i started it the first time.. The only thing that was not lost, were my apps. But some of them are gone though.

then you did something wrong. if you don't wipe then your settings won't be deleted. modaco's custom rom 3.0 does NOT delete your settings during installation, i have done it like 30 times. also you were told several times to make a nandroid backup. if you did you can restore it and EVERYTHING is back like before. if you didn't do it is entirely your fault, don't blame us.
and what features exactly are you missing? mcr3.0 is full of features, you are eather dumb, blind or drunk
I decided to try out one of the ICS ROMs today, so I did a nandroid to take a snapshot of my normal ROM setup. Normal procedure, right?
Cut to a few hours later when I try to restore my phone to its normal state using CWM. nandroid verifies the MD5 and successfully restores my phone to its pre-ICS state, but when I boot up, all my apps are gone. I get the grey Android package icon with "SD" superimposed on it for almost all my apps (including Market). When I try to launch one, an error pops up telling me the app is not installed. This persisted even when I wiped everything and re-restored from my backup. The strange thing is I have no removable SD card installed, so the apps couldn't have been moved as far as I know.
So, does anyone know what's going on here? Is this just a faulty backup or should I just cut my losses and start fresh?
Do a FULL WIPE. And try again. Report back
Done. I did a factory reset, wiped cache, and system. Didn't work—should I go the Odin route next?

Install official Samsung stock firmware then root and CWM recovery your nandroid .
jje
Try Appextractor from market. It allows you to extract apps (and more) from a nandroid backup.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Thanks for the suggestions, everybody. I managed to get things working again by Odin-ing back to stock and reflashing CWM recovery 4.0.1.4. Worked like a charm, apps included.
Okay I finally got around to putting some new ROMs on my 3D. I tried Supra 2.2 then Olympus Trinity Titan HD then Wtsb 2.0. Well I decided I wanted to go back to supra. Now I did nandroid backups of the system before I did anything, I also did one after trying the supra. Nothing will restore. When I try, a couple lines of green text flash too quickly to read then the screen goes blank and never comes back. I have to pull the battery to reboot. I have tried complete wipe and re-installing supra, but the market keeps FC right away. So i can't even get titanium backup on there.
Please help.
Follow up, I have market running on supra now and will probably stick with it for a while, but I am afraid to do anymore messing around because I don't trust nandriod now.

sounds like a bad flash or bad d/l. I would re-d/l the recovery and try one of your previous backups. (ofcourse same recovery as previous) or might not work)
If that doesn't work, since a bad load/flash went through your nan could have been goofed up as well. I would try not really another rom, but make a back up of the one that you have now, then wait about 10 min and do somn diff, then restore the one from 10 min ago... Not sure what else to say unless we knew all..
what hboot, backup, etc... anything else that can help...
Just to clarify, nandriod does not copy the kernal. So if you restore an older backup after loading a rom with a different kernel, you might have to re-install the old kernal too. right?
By default I am pretty sure it backs up the boot partition which has the kernel in it

even with hboot 1.5?
Maybe that is why my restores kept crashing... I was using recovery, but had not launched recovery from fastboot, whish as I understand is how you flash kernels if you are not using flash image.
Hello, I need some help with restoring via CWM on the Galaxy S3.
On the S2 I pretty much always used CM9 and jumped back and forth between versions and backing up/ restoring was never an issue.
Now however I am using the stock ROM and its rooted of course.
I made a back up of my stock rom 'cause I wanted to try and install some stuff.
I tried installing the jelly bean transition effects but the install failed, the device felt kinda sluggish (maybe my imagination) afterwards so I decided to restore my phone. The restoring went good but the last ting that happens is that CWM says that restoring /Data failed.
I reboot my phone and I come to the first start up screen where I get to choose language and so on. Everything but photos has been deleted. I try to install CM9, and I do that without any issues. Then I trie to backup my stock backup but I get the same error message and I get back to stock setup page.
My backup is a staggering 6GB, and I read somewhere that CWM can only restore 2GB?
I've deleted that backup and done another one but that is also 6GB.
Does anyone know how to restore from that first restore or how to make future restores work?

I had this problem with my sisters Xperia X8,couldn't restore anything that i backed up.It goes for a while and stops. But she had bootloader locked.I was shore that i unlocked her bootloader but i didn't,so i unlocked bootloader, and tried to backup and restore and it worked fine.
I'm not 100% and i don't know is that the way CWM works, but i think in order to restore your data, that you backed up,you have to unlock your bootloader. But it's the best to wait someone who knows this for 100% sure.
If you haven't unlocked bootloader try that,or you don't won't to lose your warranty!?
Good luck!
I don't think that CWM has size limitation but i can be wrong.
Have you made sure that your CWM is up-to-date? if in doubt flash the latest CF-root.
was there ever a resolution to this problem? I did the same thing, rooted the galaxy s 3 and unlock the bootloader. Get a backup of my stock set up using clockwork recovery mod. Now when I try to restore, it does not restore the data. All of my apps look like they are there, but none of them are really installed. I think I can just reinstall all of the apps by hand, I would like to know how to get over this.
Not long ago I started a thread about how good this phone was and how I have never had a problem...….ironically....I just broke it
I hadn't installed a new rom in over a year, so I updated TWRP to the latest, took a full backup, and installed the firehound rom, after the install the phone booted to a pure black screen, like screen off black, so went back to recovery, wiped it and restored my backup, only now when it starts I get a screen of text in another language have no idea, but there is a button I have no choice but to press, when I do, it reboots to recovery and does something and I noticed it wiped data, then booted again back to the same screen of foreign writing....the first line says encriptacao sem exito.
in recovery it says something about krypt keeper I think it was
anyone have any ideas?
What version of twrp ?? Maybe your backup has become corrupted and you will have to do a clean installation, even having to format the internal memory. Once I backed up a rom along with the pin code and after installing a rom and did not like it, to return the backup my device simply did not unlock even though entering the password correctly.
Thanks for the reply, I fixed it this morning. I know about not making backups with passwords and stuff set so always take them off before a backup, not sure what TWRP version but it is the latest as of yesterday. and the backup was taken with and restored in the same version right before flashing. I think somehow my internal storage had been encrypted, as you said, I had to wipe everything internal and formatted data, then installed new rom and all is good now, luckily thanks to the google overlords, nothing of any importance was lost as it is all backed up to them, only thing is it takes a little longer to get all my apps back after losing my titanium backup flashable user apps zip. but oh well haha.
