Just a quick comment, FWIW...
There was a time, when I was more of a noob than I am now, that I used to smirk at people who said they always wiped cache and data 2 or 3 times between loading different ROMs. I thought they were being a little anal - after all, a wipe's a wipe.
I've since learned differently. Recently I had a nasty FC problem that just wouldn't go away until I wiped data three times and then reflashed my ROM. Don't know why, but it works sometimes when nothing else will.
I thought it was anal too haha
I wipe 2 times before a flash.
Its weird how things work

Cvpcs wrote a great blog on wiping. I too have had nasty fc issues w/ our current recovery. You would think if it's not wiping correctly then 50 wipes would still produce the same bad wipe. I mean, the code doesn't change w/ each wipe we perform
Never had an issue with other recoveries on older phones. Properly written cwmr shouldn't need to wipe more than once b/c the code will only do what it's written to do. Improper coding leads to improper wiping. Just my $.02

Right, but if one wipe fails to wipe correctly do you suppose the second will clean up what it missed? I don't think code has become self aware of mistakes.

All I know is I always wipe data 3 times andncache/dalvik twice each.
And have never had 99% of the.problems I see others having after flashes such as FCs and all...unless it was a known bug everyone was experience.

Here is more irritation : I ran 234update.zip from stock 233 recovery FOUR TIMES w/o leaving recovery. 1st: got a status (0) and stopped. 2nd correct status err and went faster. 3rd went fastest. 4th no more speedup.

Glad I'm not the only one laughing at this entire thread of puns of whiping, being anal about doing it over and over and wiping again!
You guys are right though, everytime a wipe is done, seems the later ones are much faster.
Apparently the more you wipe, the cleaner you get, it get's easier it is to wipe again.

Yeah, that was my point. It's definetly a progressive action. Very strange. I wudda thought like XOdus, that the code would do exactly the same thing each time.
The puns are fun.
They get faster b/c there's nothing else to wipe from the directory. My final post here.

Of course. But all punning aside, the point he was making is that they get progressively faster, indicating that not all is cleared with earlier wipes. There's no denying that multiple wipes can clear up sticky problems. Even if the reason is "bad code", that's still strange.

I hear ya. The blog article makes perfect sense. Hard to argue with the logic expressed there. And yet... experience tells me otherwise. As I said in the OP, I resenctly had a persistent FC problem with a system file - may have been ProgramMenuSystem.apk, can't remember for sure. Re-loaded my nandroid (that was fine before). While anyone would fully expect that to reslove the problem, the problem continued. Wiped again and re-flashed same version of my ROM. Problem still there. Wiped three times and re-flashed ROM again. Problem gone and never re-appeared.
I cannot explain why wiping data three times eliminated the problem that persisted even after wiping and re-flashing. Yet it did. Go figure.

I think the direction of said wipe also needs to be mentioned. Front to back or back to front?
So I ditched my Thunderbolt for a Rezound. Unlocked, rooted, patched firmware, flashed Superclean ICS. Seemed to have some data issues, so I cruised around some more, got S-off and re-flashed new firmware, hit a couple more ROMs and finally loaded the latest ICS leak RUU. Everything either had intermittent data loss, random reboots, battery drain issues, or just really bad memory management. Finally I reverted back to stock, which seems to be working fine, other than intermittently dropping data connection. I'm beginning to wonder if the data loss issue is due to flashing Superclean after patching firmware, instead of fully updating it.
Have you tried ineffabilis deus?

As long as you're wiping the phone between roms, no, flashing a rom wouldn't cause that problem with other roms. By any chance is the back off when you're having these issues?
Performed the same process not to long ago and I can't say anything went wrong outside of the latest RUU having awful screen on battery life (or maybe that's just me)
it went this way for me XD
unlock, custom recovery, (WIPE) -> ics rom, old firmware patch, (oh darn this didn't upgrade it to the latest version), relock, flash the newest ruu (twice), custom recovery again, (wipe) flash rom AND the image in hboot, S-off, happy times
~ upon flashing my rom the 2nd time, i had no data seemingly, a lot of force closing, and some odd battery drain
the fix was zipalign, permission check, and wipe cache/dalvik cache to be safe, the data picked up after a half hour or so
Also try to do a factory reset in stock recovery. Has fixed data issues from jumping around to different radios and firmware.

Factory reset through HBoot has been notorious for fixing data issues specifically data dropping in and out, 4G switching back and forth to 3G. Makes swapping out firmwares even more of a pain in the ass because you need the stock recovery in order to factory reset in HBoot. On a side note having the back cover removed will kill your signal as all the antenas are in the cover.
Okay, so my data issue was a hardware problem. was still dropping after a full stock reversion. After four hours of Verizon reps trying new sim cards and messing with my network profile, I have a new phone. Let's try this again...

Have you had any problems with your replacement? Cause I've had an issue with my data dropping out completely on my stock rezound. I've been through 2 replacements and I'm on my third, which is still doing it.

Was having similar data issues on rooted stock, where my data would just stop working and would require a reboot to get it back. Opted to install Nil's Business ROM based on latest leak. Had a hard time getting the 4g to work initially but after applying the GB patch a couple time and a couple hard resets and reboots, I have not had my data drop even once.

I am now having my 5th Rezound being sent because of data issues.
Gads. I've waited 2 years to root my phone and the first ROM I flash toasts it. I downloaded the Skyraider Zeus 1.3 and everything looked fine. When it rebooted, though, I realized I'm not able to do anything.
I slide the lock to get into the phone and I'm greeted by a dialog about in-call volume. All I can do is hit the Silent button and it switches between that and bluetooth volume. I can't figure out how to get past it so I can actually do anything.
Ideas?
ETA: Now I'm really sick to my stomach. I decided to restore from backup. Neither one of the backups I made prior to flashing are working.
Error while restoring /data!
WTF? Now I'm dead in the water.
4pm Update: I figured I have a brick now so I wiped data/factory reset, wiped cache. Now I'm trying to re-install Skyraider. I'm not holding my breath.
You're not bricked.
Go back into recovery...
Wipe data/factory reset 3x, wipe cache, and then wipe dalvik cache.
Flash the ROM.

Thanks. I did that and it worked. I guess I have to reinstall everything.
Why would two different backups fail to restore? The first I did manually last night through Titanium. The second I did when I flashed through ROM Manager.
That's your problem using rom manager. Download 4ext in the play store and you wont have backup issues.

Will do. What a debacle it started out to be. I think I'm ok now. I got the ROM working and for some reason although I wasn't able to boot into recovery and restore I have been able to restore my apps and data through Titanium. I have to say buying the Pro license was worth not having to acknowledge each install.
One thing I noticed is that I used to be able to slide the task bar down and have two options. Initially it was set with notifications but I could select a tab to make quick selections like enable/disable the hotspot, etc. I'll have to figure out why I only see notifications now. Maybe that's just part of the ROM behavior.

That's strange that you don't see the quick settings tab.
Usually after flashing a ROM through recovery, I flash it an extra time so that I know it gets all the files through.
I know when I flashed Gingeritis 3D, I couldn't get the music player to stop force closing when I changed the music sound effects. The only way to fix these issues and a few others was to flash it a couple more times, without wiping anything at all. Dirty flashes (not wiping) could possibly fix any issues as long as you haven't changed any of the ROMs settings or set up anything.

Nusense is actually on my list. These are what I was initially looking at trying:
Liquid Smooth AOKP
SkyRaider Zeus 1.3
NuSense
I think I'm like most Tbolt users that are tired of waiting for ICS. I wasn't sure about Nusense because I was believing that Sense was the source of a lot of my problems. However, SkyRaider (even though it's neither ICS nor Sense-less) is running considerably better. My phone was next to useless. It might take 1-2 min just for the stupid thing to dial a # once it was selected. I'd tell people if I ever needed 911 I'd be dead before it even dialed. I also had a lot of problems with messaging and general performance. So maybe it was just a bloatware problem that was dragging me into the mud.
Now that I'm having a positive experience with SR I think I'm going to make NuSense my next one. It looks very promising. I appreciate the warning and help to steer me clear.

You should try Twisteds version of Liquid ICS AOSP . Only problem is Netflix and video can don't work. But other than that its a great rom --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33076925

Thanks. I'll give it a shot. I don't use Netflix much from the phone so that's not a deal breaker.
How is it with data? I flashed NuSense yesterday morning and flashed back to SkyRaider last night. I couldn't stay connected. The data drops were horrible. It was odd. I'd have the 3G/4G icon like I was connected but couldn't surf/email/etc. Then other times I'd lose the 3G/4G altogether. Sometimes resetting the mobile data would work and other times it would just laugh at me.
I guess I didn't give it much of a chance since it only lasted <12 hours but it was driving me nuts. Nothing like spending time with family and not being able to surf and escape.
Any liquid based ics rom is plagued with data drops.

Ugh. That's not good. SkyRaider has been rock solid on data. The only thing I've really run into is it seems flashing my apps with app2zip only works on some things. I end up having to re-flash Kindle, Lookout, and a few other apps once I'm up and running again.
I was really looking forward to ICS but not if data drops are the norm.
I've searched around the forums and have been unable to locate a thread or post that pertains to the issues that I'm currently dealing with....
Every time I open a game I can get anywhere from 30seconds to a few minutes of playtime before the game just shuts down. I'm not getting a force close message or anything, the phone just goes back to the home screen. If I go back into the game it just starts it over. Right now I'm running the latest Beanstalk with the included latest Uber, but it is not just with this ROM that the issue shows itself. Its been happening to me with every 4.3 ROM I've put in my phone...
Not sure if its just me that's having the issue, if anyone has a fix, or if someone can just say my phone is broke so my wife will let me have a new one lol.

Well, Shayne has no trouble playing games and I don't either so obviously your phone is broken and must be replaced immediately (or on the 4th when the Note 3 hits the stores)!:good::laugh: Can't have your phone freezing up when she's trying to call you. Yep, time for a new one! Come to think of it mine is about to break too!
I'm having the same issue running any 4.3 rom as it is a known problem but not on every phone. Not all phones react the same so we must be a few that can't run cm10.2 yet. The issue is being looked into and slowly getting the bugs worked out. I think I'll try the 2.5 twrp to see if that is the main problem with mine. Thanks for the suggestion Shane :good:

Alright, so I've been modding my phone and many others since the early days of the Captivate, so I'm pretty well versed in how all of this works. That being said, here's my problem:
My phone has become a bit of a whiny b*tch when it comes to flashing ROMs. I know every phone is unique and what works for some may not work for others. But ROMs that have always done well for me (for instance, Flappjaxxx's Unofficial has always ran flawlessly on my device) are now buggy as hell. MD5s are always verified, I fully wipe as instructed, I don't overclock... It just doesn't work right anymore. I get kernel panics and random reboots all the time.
Any insight as to just what the hell is going on with my device would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Cheers.

its been a while since I have seen a Flapp's rom on here..............
it may not have anything to do with it, but is that an unofficial 4.1 or 4.2 ?
is that the only rom?
I see your stats and know your experienced, but running a rom from Flapp tells me it may have been a little while. things have progressed quite a bit since then.
lets try this.............when was the last time you went into recovery and wiped you Davlik or Cache? could just be a little constipated.
Flapp is gone, his work only survives on his own site. I keep a copy of his ICS native ROM around because, so far, nothing has come close to being as snappy and stable. It's a sort of safe place that I always come back to. I could go weeks without rebooting and never bog down. I love it.
I still flash new works regularly, always with the necessary wipes. When I start getting buggy, I always try the usual go-to fixes. Wiping the caches, Fix Permissions, all that noise. At first, I just thought it was the rampant instability that comes with a new base. New base, new bugs. But for the last month or so, it makes no difference. ICS or JB, Native or AOSP... It's all unstable for me. Something is wrong somewhere. Something that doesn't change with wipes and a flash.
I'm just hoping that someone with a deep knowledge of Android has dealt with this and reads this post.

for what it is worth, I had some issues when 4.3 came out. was only 1 or 2 that I could run and seemed if I could run it, after about a week it would start going haywire. 2 roms would not run at all. I am not big on running an alternate kernel. the rom should run with the kernel the developer included. I posted a thread and others suggested wiping EMMC. that scared the crap out of me. my internal storage was very full. I was having to delete a file just to install another.
I moved all my music and pics to external and got rid of everything else. anything else was on Google.
I now have no more issues running whatever I want and have maybe had 2 ort 3 reboots in last month or more.
out of habit now, what I do after my multiple wipes is flash rom itself, then flash rom and gapps. let it settle for the 10 and reboot again. then set up. been a pretty solid routine
many out there still have have issues with 4.2, but I have heard of very very few reboot issues on 4.3.
good luck my friend

Lol dammit! I figured that'd be the suggestion. I was really hoping not to have to wipe my internal storage. Like you said, that is some seriously scary business. I already keep my backups and music on the external, so I guess I'll just backup my pics to my laptop and give it a good wipe.
Thanks for the advice.

cant you go blind from doing that?
don't worry, it's only natural for a young man to explore his partitions
Lol. Effin clowns. Turns out I'm far too lazy to sift through the folders. I dragged the DCIM onto my desktop and wiped that S.O.B. clean. I haven't seen 11 GB free since I bought this bastard lol. Hopefully it works out.
