[Q] bricked vibrant need help - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

if youve been reading any of my past threads you will know that i made the stupid mistake of flashing 19k bootloaders on my vibrant to fix the recovery and screen issues with 2.3 roms. it had been running fine for a while, but i had to use adb to reboot into download.
i had used heimdall to go back to 2.2 while my phone had been on i9k bootloaders and it had worked fine
so again i wanted to go back to stock but the factory.rfs failed and left me with the phone to computer screen. first i used adb reboot download, but it didnt detect my device. next i tried just flashing on that screen because that has worked for me in the past.
but heimdall on my Linux computer didn't recognize it... so i rebooted still nothing tried going into download using 3 buttons still nothing. so then i went to windows on a different computer. i have the drivers installed on it and i have used it in the past so i know it should work.... but it didn't find my device....
any other way to get my phone to be recognized?

The phone to pc error screen seems to be a foggy subject with these phones.
theres threads which explain how some people have gotten it into download mode using different combos of inserting/removing cord and battery while holding buttons.
when i bricked mine, nothing on the net worked at all. i had to send it into samsung, after telling them kies broke it. i had a manf warranty.

You can try the jig, or try the 2 button volume combo with the battery pulled and then plug into the usb that is attached to the computer. The Variant that seems to work as well is the same as above but tap on the home screen right after you plug it in this has worked for me in the past. Or alternate between the home and menu lighted buttons........ that also can work........ don't know why but it does.... good luck

Once had my computer crash in the middle of a odin flash (whole pc crash not just odin) that yielded me that screen for a while. I know you already tried the bat pull and button combos with no luck, I would keep trying. Mine would not respond at first leaving me with a great deal of panic. in my case leaving the battery out and unplugged for a while finally got me back to download after about an hour of trying.
If all else fails, like the other guy said try a jig. do a search on it and make one as some people are trying to sell them at some cost.
Dude good luck really. We all take the same risk and hope for the best. No mater how many times we do these things we roll the dice. really hope it works out for you.

[Q] Soft Bricked phone!

I believe I may have a soft brick on my SGS II. I had updated my CM9 to the latest in the thread and started to have a few problems. I had my phone overheat and die on me one time and take forever to charge back up. It originally had a yellow triangle next to the battery. After several hours of charging it booted up and I was able to use my phone again. I had never had an issue with CM9 before this and since this day, I had many outstanding issues with it.
As of last night I have had a soft brick I am assuming. But it doesn't seem to be recoverable either. Which is insanely strange. I had flashed many stock firmware and firmware files in Odin but can't see to get the phone to boot bast the AT&T Rethink Possible screen. It's been sitting for two days like this and I can only get to this screen after I have flashed something in Download mode. (doesn't matter, as long as odin resets device I get here) tried repartitioning, flashing stock modem, flashing stock rom in the how to get your device ready to be replaced thread, flashed kernels, flash stock PARAM. and I have got nothing.
Anyway to tell if my phone is saveable? I have the download counter set back to 0 so if push comes to shove i can try to get a new phone from at&t on tuesday.
But i'd really like to see my phone get fixed, the experience is good. Hopefully we can figure this out. All I can get access to is Download mode so recovery is pretty much out of the question.
Any advice guys? Google has done me no good.
Flash a rooted, cwm kernel through Odin, reboot into recovery, flash a rom.
^ that method has never failed me.
Also, when using Odin, use the USB ports on the back of your computer!

This.
Be careful, I have noticed that Odin acts like a ***** when you talk him about extended usb ports.
Reboot your pc, strange as it seems that can fix a lot of ODIN problems.
Does ODIN like x64 based systems?

I am running ODIN on an x64 based laptop. it has worked flawlessly until now! I have a soft bricked I777 also so I'm watching this thread for any good stuff to try.
My odin freezes right at the beginning of the FACTORYFS.img push.
It just sits and sits and sits. Drains the battery also.
I'm gonna go try a CWM kernel to see if that will help. My issue I think is the partitions are screwed somehow.
I can't flash back to factory standard because I had JB on my I777 and the flashes are getting stopped up by the partitions.
thanks for the input ...
I never thought of flashing just a kernel! DUHHH...

I simply realized there was something I didn't try!
Why are you people so UPTIGHT!!!
The simple fact that NOTHING save a PIT file is able to be written to my phone is the ISSUE here!
So no the Kernal did NOT work. I cannot flash a ROM either as they are all .zips requiring me to have access to my phone. Obviously there is no solution at least on this site! All you people can do is criticize! Does that REALLY make you feel superior?
How about FIXING something? Give me some text I can use!

Trell959 you Biporch and ryude talking about the USB ports and odin being a ***** got me thinking about my computer.
Although I have used my x64 based laptop many times to communicate with my phone for some reason that was exactly what the issue was.
I spent about 15 hours trying to figure out what was wrong with my phones com when it was the USB ports was not 'CLEAN' enough.
I finally moved to my server and plugged into the Main USB ports on it. Low and Behold the First time I was flashing away like a Big Dog!
Arff Arff
I apologize for my childish rants against that Nick guy below. I was frustrated and he offered no help, just naggin! Whatever...

I bricked my phone thanks to a misinformation on how to flash recovery.img
JIG did not work for me either. the only thing I could do was to drop at an att store and told them the phone is not working. they tried some stuff on it and then gave me a new one instead.
The only thing was that I had it for less than a month.

Stop referring people to that thread of yours when phones aren't bricked. Immediately. Or I will deal with you. Are we clear ? :-/
If they follow those steps & the phone isn't bricked, they sure as fcuk will have a brick on their hands if it goes wrong.
This person's phone isn't even remotely close to being bricked, it's a simple case of 'Odin won't work' like 99.9999% of those cases on here, and the fix is usually very simple.
OP - This gets covered here so many times per week it ain't funny. Search for similar threads, there are a bunch troubleshooting steps you need to follow (This is the final time I'm typing that as well, from now on people will just get 'Search').

Yeah I get it  (that's why the first line of the guide is meant to and usually does, scare people off), but if he eventually reaches the desperation point(no amount of flash attempts succeeds) , following my guide would be better than blind flashing of pit files(in a case where recovery is completely inaccessible my guide is useless) , which I have seen people recommending to do, if the user is lucky enough to flash a kernel and bootup the recovery, memory block corruption(it can happen because of reasons like phone turned off while flashing via Odin, removing cable midway of odin flash, and possibly several others) can also be effectively corrected.
Edit :I have made the guide a little bit more safer so that any noob who ignores all the warnings and go ahead with the procedure will stop after the first step if he/she is not having corrupted block's, effectively keeping him/her safe.

Wow. That's a magical fix
OP - You were told to search for similar threads, there are 6 or so other steps you haven't even tried once yet. Bottom line is, if you want your phone fixed, you're going to need to do everything and quite possibly do it over & over till it works. Nobody here can do that for you. If you can't be bothered trying 2nd or 3rd PC and go thru the troubleshooting steps as well on those if necessary, your phone is going to stay busted.
The end.

Tried to update TWRP via goomanager, now the phone won't power on. Brick?

I was having trouble getting TWRP to recognize my SD Card so I downloaded an updated version from goomanager. Flashed in TWRP, rebooted and the phone never came back up. It seems as though its dead. Can't get it to go in to recovery or download or anything. Did I brick it?

At this point I am assuming I did not install the right one. I have never updated via goo before. When I used it to search for roms it on;y showed me roms for my phone, so I assumed it was only showing me recoveries for my phone as well.
I believe it was this one openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.2-t03g.zip
After searching the goomanager website, I do see the phone specific recoveries have the phone name in the file name. DANG
2.5 is the most recent. You said no response to power button. What happens when you connect to your pc?

2.5 is the most recent, but like I said, now that I've searched the web, I am reasonably sure the file I flashed was not specific to my phone.

I thought JTAGs weren't available for the Note?
Sent from my Transformer using XDA Premium HD app
JTAG isn't a thing. Its a process where inputs are soldered to the mainboard and the OS is flashed directly to the ROM.

ROFL! I did some looking back, and apparently i got a Hardware Jig confused with a JTAG. Haha, apparently my brain saw a J, a G, said " duuurrmrmmmmmmmaawwaaafffllleeees, and thought everyting was all good.
I blame goomanager for bricking mine that way too.
Wromg one for phone when I expected it to omly give me my phone.

Not sure how you attempted to upgrade but if you choose "flash ROM" it will ask you if you want to search for a recovery. If you input yes it finds the proper file for your device.

I am admittedly a "stupid user" as many posts on these forums will show, but I think this is what happened to me as I have flashed many many roms, but when I tried to update to 2.5 TWRP I created a shiney door-stop.
I had updated before manually but thought, wow, goo manager looks more simple and dependable.
I could be wrong! No way to tell for sure. But I "feel" like this also happened to me.
I think it is the right thing to voice it as a concern.

Could i trim the quotes a lot more? Yea. And I will. Could you find something better to do with your time, than to go on a one man crusade and remake XDA in your likeness?
Next time, instead of sounding like a judgmental 12 year old girl, send a PM and make a "suggestion", listing the reasons its hetter for XDA, and ultimately, yourself. But it's not your role, its not your job, to ensure others are typing the way you like.
Hey buddy, relax. I was agreeing with you about getting jig and JTAG mixed up. Notice my patient response to your question.
Why are you getting so worked up? So why didn't you follow your own suggestion about PMs? Your rant sounds a little harsh. Who put you in charge of calling out people you don't agree with.
That thing about quotes is my signature line. How many people quote a huge post to only answer one line from the post? How often in a face-to-face conversation do you repeat everything a person said? Everyone would think you're on drugs. The reason the search function is usless is because of the needless quoting by lazy people.
If the signature bothers you, you probably need to follow the advice.

I was having trouble getting TWRP to recognize my SD Card so I downloaded an updated version from goomanager. Flashed in TWRP, rebooted and the phone never came back up. It seems as though its dead. Can't get it to go in to recovery or download or anything.

I almost did the same thing today! Used the Goo Manager app and it started downloading twrp 2.5, and I started thinking, isn't there a 2.6? Then I realized, even more importantly, that the file did not have i717 in the name, and I knew past versions had. I thought the app was going to automatically install and reboot (according to the teamw.in website), but thankfully my internet was slow and I was able to cancel the download about 30 seconds in. Scary stuff.
I would definitely NOT recommend trusting this app to download recovery. Do it the "old-fashioned" way.
