[Q] A new SGS2 user wanting to use a custom ROM

So hi all, I got my SGS2 about 2 weeks ago and so far am really liking it. I, however, am intrigued about the features that a custom ROM could provide.
Currently I'm looking at Cognition S2. I've read the installation instructions and browsed around the forums reading about this stuff. There are, however, a couple of questions that have risen.
1) Do I need to root my phone before being able to flash Cognition S2? If so, is the best way to do this by getting CF-Root?
2) If I flash said ROM, will I lose all applications and data? If so, is there a way to back them up first? I've read about people recommending Titanium Backup, but even that requires the phone to be rooted so this seems like an egg and a chicken -type of thing to me.
3) If I flash a custom ROM, is there a way to reset the phone back to it's "original" state so that, in case it dies during the warranty, Samsung won't just tell me to get lost because I've flashed it myself?
Basically I'd like to flash, but not if I jeopardize such an expensive toy.

1. Yes.
2. Yes but once you have root, install Titanium, do a back up and then flash Cognition rom.
3. Yes provided you find the correct version of your carrier's software. But beware : if you don't read carefully and screw your phone up with a bad flash, you might not be able to do it yourself.
Read more and then follow instructions exactly.

Yes, your phone must be rooted before flashing (most ROMs). Simply flash CF-Root kernel via ODIN and you are done. Really easy.

Most likely all your apps and settings would remain, BUT. I would highly recommend to boot into CWM recovery (you'll get it by flashing CF-Root kernel), do full wipe and only then flash new ROM.
To backup your apps use AppAdmin/AntTek app Admin/Titanium Backup or some similar app. Titanium Backup has an option to backup app settings/data. Personaly i would NOT use it, but that's another story.

1. Flash CF-Root kernel.
2. Backup your apps/contacts/text messages and so on.
3. Boot into CWM recovery and backup your current ROM.
4. Wipe.
5. Flash new ROM

And yes and no. you can restore phone firmware (if you made a backup on step3), you can flash back stock kernel, but SGS2 have two(?) hidden counters that shows how many times you have flashed custom kernels. If counter shows something else then 0 - your warranty is lost. At least it should be like that but friend of mine got repaired his SGS2 with no problems while his counter was showing "3". Perhaps it depends on person who work at repair center.

[Q] Need help with 2.3 update - Backup and Restore issue

Hi Guys, i really need a hand lol!
I regrettably updated the phone to the new Sony Ericsson 2.3 software tonight and ran a back up prior to doing it so I had a collection of everything on the phone just in case something went wrong
I am trying to restore my contacts and data previous to the update but there is no flapping Backup and Restore option on the phone anymore on this new update.
I can see that backup file when i connect the phone to the PC under the data folder, so the information is there. I just need to know an app that i could use to get this running. I have tried one "BackMeUp" but its not finding the file
I cant believe this new software update does not have a backup and restore option in the phone!!!
Am i stuffed here? Isn't 2.3 compatible with 2.1?
What can i do... please help lol
Much appreciated
Try Mybackup. It worked for me

Thanks for your reply Jad
Question... Did you already have MyBackUp installed and ran the backup from this app? Or did you use the SE Backup and Restore app?
The problem i am having is that I have used the SE B&R app prior to the upgrade, so any other app I am trying to use is not picking up where the data is
Nothing guys???
After a bit of reading I think i have succumb to the fact that I need to flash this phone back to 2.1 unless anyoneeeeee knows any different????????? All the apps i have tried have got me nowhere
So i have a few questions before i do this:
- Does the phone need to be rooted before i use flashtool?
- Does it matter which firmware i put on when i flash it? I had a generic X10i 2.1 something (cant remember the build number). Is it safe to assume if I flash it with any 2.1 X10i firmware that the phone will be able to successfully restore?
- is my backup root a phone app or a pc app? I'm presuming a phone app and its a method you guys have used so it should work lol
- any custom roms you suggest for 2.3? I had the phone rooted previously but never got round to changing the rom on it. :/
- Dumb question but does the Backup & Restore function back up my apps aswell? When i restore it, will they appear again?
Please help... definite noob in distress here haha

You don't need to be rooted to use flashtool to flash a firmware.
You can use the backup+restore utility to restore apps in 2.1, then use titanium backup or mybackup to backup everything so you are ready for 2.3.
For a 2.3 custom rom I would recommend you Wolfbreak's rom, it's based on the stock rom with some tweaks which means you get a lightning fast rom with everything working.

Cheers Chris... would it be possible though to find the .apk file for the SE backup and restore and install that on the 2.3 software that is on the phone now without doing the flash back to 2.1. Done some more searching in the thread and noticed a few more people with the same situation
here you go backup and restore for GB! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193802&highlight=backup

[Q] ROM question

Hello,
I recently put a custom ROM on my Galaxy Player. But I want to put a new ROM on my Player. Do I have to remove my current ROM? Or just flash the new ROM with odin, without removing the old one.
I've been searching on google, but I didn't find any clear answers.
Can someone please tell me this?
Thanks
Nevermind I got this. I just installed the new ROM onto it, without removing the old one. Hope that the right thing..
Yes, but usually you want to do a factory reset deal with it, before and after flashing to new ROM. If you have a Nandroid backup, all you have to do is an advance restore and restore your previous data without all of the hassle.

Factory reset prior to flashing a rom would be enough in my experience... but I guess after wouldn't hurt either... your preference and time...
quick question about flashing these players can we put the roms straight to sd card and flash thru cwr or must we always flash thru odin?
what ROM are you using successfully?
what RoM did you use? Do all hardware features work? (wifi, camera, etc)
Do you have the Player 4 or 5? US Version?
I have the 5" US version and want a newer version of android than the one that came with it. When will 4.0 be available in a custom ROM? Any ideas?
klins rom with u.s. steve kernel 4.0 u.s
I think he was asking when an ICS port was gonna be available.
So far people are having a hard enough time getting CM7 or CM9 to port to our devices. So if ICS does make it to us, it's still a ways out.
so does anyone know if we flash just thru odin or can we flash thru cwr as well?
How do you get clockworkmod recovery?

You can just flash Entropy's kernel with odin and it'll give you cwm. After you flash just turn it off and hold the volume up + power until it says Samsung, then you let go of the power button and that's it.

Rooted on stock ROM, do i need CWM recovery?

Those of you who are rooted to get access to certain things like tethering and freezing bloatware and perhaps overclock. Are you also installing CWM? I mean is there a point if will be staying on the stock ROM for awhile?
I just exchanged my Galaxy Note to ATT the other day, had a white buy wanted a black . I had it rooted, with CWM installed, with titanium backup and so on. But i don't think i really even need CWM unless i will be installing Rom.
Or maybe i should just install it for the hell of it for future use? I mean is their any other use to CWM that perhaps i am missing?

well um no, no reason to install CWM if you're not going to use it
people install CWM to either make backups, or flash things
normally flashing things is why people make nandroid backups
but since you not going to flash......
Ok thanks. I know what CWM does, but just wanted to make sure i wasn't missing anything. I plan on installing some Roms in the future. So i guess there is no reason to install it now. Thanks.
As stated, if you don't need it then don't install it. It is on beta 4, and was reported to be very good in beta 3, but with time comes improvements. So, just wait til you need it and you will have the best CWM for when you do need it.

Freeing up x10 mini pro while rooted

So my phone was only usable with "Vodafone" and I want to change from a company to another so, in order to free it up I got my code but now I cannot find the menu to put it. I've thought that maybe it has something to do with having my phone rooted and with a different kernel, and ROM.
Is there any problem with it? Do any of you know what do I have to do to find the menu to free the phone?
Thanks!

Not all ROMS seem to include that, quickest way to do it is to make a backup in cwm, flash back to stock, (you'll get the input-box when inserting a different sim-card), then flash back the kernel you're on now and restore your backup from cwm.

I'm using CM7 or CMini7, whatever it is :/
Thx anyway
So, I've been thinking, is there any app that can do the freeing thing? I don't feel really comfortable changing the rom twice because afaik I should also change the bootloader or something like that because I got a custom one :/

Nope, once the bootloader is unlocked there is no need to mess with it again, it won't get relocked or anything like that.
Just make a backup of your current ROM in CWM.
Flash stock and put the code in
Flash back your custom kernel and restore the backup from CWM
Everything will be the same as it is now, apart from the fact that your phone is sim-unlocked.
