[Q] I want to try another custom ROM - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I actually was okay with the stock ROM (3588), but it wasn't rooted, I couldn't get Google's app suite on it and I didn't like the launcher. I installed the Cyanogen 7.0.0 custom ROM and while all of the above gripes are solved video playback has a noticeable stutter (just the picture, sound is okay) and the fonts and of the UI seems fuzzy or stretched (as if its not using the full 1024x600 resolution). Also the fact that the internal memory doesn't mount as /sdcard is urking me (I don't have a microSD card).
Is there a custom ROM that is a nice blend between the stock ROM and the Cyanogen 7 ROM (and doesn't have that ugly spacing between apps in the launcher)?

I would suggest you try Vegan Ginger. It's got some more of the Vega flavor added to CM7.
If you are still on CM7, replace the launcher (try VTL-Launcher in the Themes/Apps section). VTL is geared more for tablets. You can also change the number of rows & columns that will make better use of the screen.
All Gingerbread based roms are going to have some video issues. nVidia has not released drivers for our system for GB. There is an ongoing 'movement' to try and fix that. Seems to be having some success.
Vegan Ginger also mounts the /Sdcard & /sdcard2 the way you are used to. CM7 standard is to put internal memory on /emmc. I expect sooner or later we will have to move that route.

try vegan 5.1.1 with vtl. first look up .nomedia and market fix.

Thanks! VTL Launcher works great, except I can't get into an individual widget's settings since the launcher's long press takes precedence over the widget's long press. I'll try Vegan next if the issue becomes a real problem.
Thanks again!

What about installing the stock ROM (3588), rooting it, install Google Apps and replacing the stock launcher (with VTL Launcher)... is this possible?? Particularly rooting the stock ROM and getting the Google Apps installed since I've yet to come across any posts/articles about these.

Install the stock rom and then the enhancement pack. It will give you root and the market

rats! The 3588 enhancement pack doesn't have root. it also doesn't have the long press the home button for app switching feature.
On to Vegan Tab I guess...

If VEGAn is where you're headed and you like to watch ripped dvds on your gTab I would suggest you stay with froyo VEGAn 5.1 with the 5.1.1 supplemental as that version has hardware acceleration and the Ginger Edition of VEGAn doesn't.

Correction: VTL Launcher doesn't get in the way of a widget's long press features - I was doing it wrong. The widget in question is CirlceLauncher (1.6) and I figured out how to really get to an individual launcher's settings/configuration (tap to bring up apps THEN long press to bring up it's settings).
Also long press is a default feature for all desktop launchers by design (for moving shortcuts/widgets/folders around). I should of known that couldn't have been a widget's feature. Thanks for not flaming me everyone!
So far VEGAn Tab beta 5.1 and VTL.Launcher is the winning combo for me. Even though I don't like the notification bar icons, I think I've finally settled on a ROM.

[Q] TnT launcher possible to install?

I'm one of those people who, for various reasons, like the current stock ROM. In particular, after trying a number of launchers I keep coming back to TnT. I rarely use the "dashboard," but it is nice when I'm using the tablet on a stand and can turn it on and in a moment get the time, weather, and a news headline. For the most part I use the "classic" mode which just works for me. There are no inappropriate and useless phone-related icons or features and the on-screen Menu and Back icons are very helpful. My presbyopic eyes like the large notification icons and the simple layout.
On the other hand, there are some very nice aspects to the recent CyanogenMod 7 ROM. A biggie is the location feature that works surprisingly well.
I'd probably use modded ROMs more if I could find a launcher that I like. Given that I think I've tried just about all of them, it looks as if what I really want is the TnT one. Is this installable on a ROM that didn't come with it?
yes you can. on the caulkin rom you get a folder with the "home" and other missing apps to install the tnt launcher also you can go to droidpirate.com and search for a bunch of stuff to download including the launcher there.

Go Launcher

Anyone using Go Launcher? If so do I install like I would on a phone or is there more to it?
I'm running the latest CM7 nightly from emmc.
Tried it on the nook - doesn't format correctly cutting off the bottom of the menus. Had to get rid of it on my Dinc due to FC on 7.0.3. Switched to Zeam. It does look better than Zeam by alot and has more mods than most themes. They also update often.
I switched to Go Launcher EX a few weeks ago. LauncherPro was causing my NC to be really laggy and buggy. So far, I've been extremely happy with Go - it is responsive, flexible and has lots of great themes available.

[Q] Can VTL Launcher be upgraded on Calkulin Clemsyn V6

Have 3 Gtabs running Calkulin Clemsyn como v6. Two run great, but on one I randomly get blank notifications & when that happens VTL Launcher partially freezes (can switch screen, open some apps but eventally will totally freeae). From the point the blank notification appears I can't get into the VTL menu to restart VTL & while holding Power brings up the power off option, it would let me pick a selection. I have to hold power to turn off.
I notice that the version of VTL is 1.61. but there is a newer version out, 1.6.5. Clemsyn says on his post (in development) that trying to change the default launcher could cause sleep of death. Not sure if that means the process of changing it while the system is running or if he means swithcing to a different launcher!!!
To the question....Can I use ADB to overwrite the vtllauncer.apk in /system/app/ with the newer version, then reboot & it work correctly?
Try it and tell the rest of us if it works. Since the "old" vtl is a system app launcher in v6, there's too much of a chance something will go wrong.
What you can do is this. Install another launcher, something like adw or whatever. Then use system app remover to take out the old vtl. Then install the new vtl. Then voila you have the new vtl.

More on the blank notifications. Seems to be two different ones. One points to the time in the Notifcation Bar & the other appear below the home icon on the notifcation bar.
I've also duplicated this on a second gTab.
Seems to do it most when moving icons near the notification bar/trash can
Oh, I know what you're talking about now. Go into vtl settings, choose none for swiping up and swiping down, and then also choose to never hide task bar. After this, the blank notification will never appear again.
Replaced VTL. So far so good!

Downloaded & installed ADW Launcher from freewarelovers.com. Downloaded System App Remover from Marketplace & installed. Switched to ADW Launcher. Ran System App Remover & backuped up original VTL then removed it. Used Rootexplorer to copy new version of VTL to /system/app & changed permissions. Installed the new version. Rebooted & selected new VTL as default, then removed ADW & reboooted. All the things I've tried so far appear to be working normally. I'll do more testing & report back.

There isn't a "none" option in Swipe Up/Down Actions. I have Show Previews, Open/close App Drawer, Show/hide statusbar, Open/close notifications, Move to default desktop/Open notification, or Open App!
I'll try the Open/close App Drawer - Up & Open/close Previews - Down & see how that works.
Thanks for the help.

I was gonna take pictures and shoot a video proving that there is such an option
For those that are interested. I have sucessfully replaced VTL Laucncer (v1.6.1) in Calkulin Clemsyn combo v6 with VTL Laucher v1.6.5 from gojimi's vegan site http://vegantab.gojimi.com/vt-labs/vtl-launcher/ (see post # 5 if interested) on 2 of my 3 gTabs (granddaugher wouldn't give hers up long enough for me to do hers). I have used both extensively over the last couple of days with no issues. Feel free to test if you feel the need to upgrade. The only thing I did that I didn't mention in post #5 is that I did a backup in CWM before I did any of this...just in case.
Is an upgrade really necessary
I tried to up grade without success.
Is an upgrade really necessary? What is better with VTL 1.6.5?
It sounds like a lot of work?

You can,t do a direct upgrade because VTL is included as a system app...that's why you have to do the entire procedure.
Probably no big reason to upgrade...I did it because I thought it was causing the blank notifications that was locking mine up. If you change the settings in your VTL (above), you should be OK. If you want to see the changes between 1.6.1 & 1.6.5 you can go to gojimi's site.
Really didn't take long to do...maybe 15-20 minutes and I've only been using Android/gTab for about 3 weeks.
May be worth keeping in mind for when gojimi releases a version with more features, improvement or bug fixes.
THANKS...

Minor correction.
The reason why you can't just upgrade is because in order to upgrade an app the app has to be closed, uninstalled, and newer version install. You can't do that with a launcher if it's the only launcher available. That's why you have to install another launcher, uninstall vtl, then install the newer version. Otherwise, the system would crash and burn if you ain't got no launcher running.
The whole process should take about 1.5 minute.
(1) Install adw launcher.
(2) Press home button and choose adw launcher.
(3) Using root explorer uninstall vtl.
(4) Install new vtl.
(5) Press home button and choose vtl as your defalt.
How hard can that be?
Sounds Pretty Simple

I'll give it a shot.
Hey Captirwin, are you one of the people who a month ago emailed me asking me if I'd mod the gtab for you for a modest fee? Or was that someone else?
It was me

I was one of those people.
That said, following the easy to follow instructions on your website, I was able to install a custom ROM, and do the GPS install.
I did make a modest donation.
Its people like you that make this hobby enjoyable.
THANKS.

[Q] GO Launcher problems?

A little background... I'm running the perma root method that shows version 9.9.9 and 1.4.0 and have access to play market etc. I also have the nice ICS bar buttons. I downloaded go launcher ex today and it runs fast, looks good, etc. My problem is that it is sized wrong! The fonts are huge or small depending and the bar at the bottom often sinks down into where the notification bar is. It's annoying and I believe it's because of the dpi or something that is stock on the nook. Is there anything I can do to size this right so that the fonts and sizes are correct on the nook tablet? Again, I'm not running cm7 or 9, just stock rooted.
From what I remember when I was running rooted 1.40 months ago, Go Launcher didn't play nice. There is a stable version though, something like 2.67, I am going off memory, you may want to double check. I had to freeze Go launcher so as not to get any updates. Any version after that was a little wonky. You may want to try out CM7 or CM9, Go Launcher works really well with both.

I'm running 3.01 from Amazon, sideloaded on NT stock tablet 1.4, which should behave the same as your rooted version without the root access. (I don't run Google Play because it wouldn't ever install correctly and I have an SD card from which I run CM7 which does have the Play Store.) I have adjusted all icon and icon label and font sizes, icon grid spacing, etc. to sizes that look just fine. Go Launcher has many customization features under the preferences item on the menu.
I was running go launcher on 4.1.0 rooted and it was fine. I even changed the rows and columns to get more on the home screen. When I restored to go back to stock over the weekend go launcher updated to the latest and still worked well.

[Q] Change the main Applications

So, I'm new to XDA and anything android... but I have had my nook tablet (16GB) for 2 weeks or longer and I've been playing around with it. It's already rooted and its running the stock firmware because (strangely) I like it better then other roms (which I have tested). But anyway to the main question:
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if it is possible to change the main app, and by that I mean is when I press the "movies" or "music" button at the bottom of the screen it will open a different app (like Mobo Player). I am asking this because I am not fond of the fact it shows apps to purchase (From B&N app store) and that it shows the "My Media" (pressing movies button) or "Music Player" (when pressing the music button) any idea how to change this?
p.s. i hop no one made a thread on this, I did look but I didn't get much results... and also I don't wish to install GoLanucher or anything similar, Thanks for the help!
Hmm, I'm not sure about changing how what the default shortcuts on the B&N UI link to but have you considered trying a new launcher? I know you said you tried other roms but not sure if you didn't like them because of the UI (what the launcher changes) or another reason.
If the latter, I'd consider going to the play store and grabbing adw ex or go launcher. Then you'll be able to set up your own dock, personalized with apps of your choosing.
Ya I know about the launchers, its just I prefer the default UI and all. But thanks for the quick reply!
Ah, in that case I don't think its possible, at least not without some serious modification of the B&N OS itself.
Well, thanks for the suggestion! I guess I'll have to live with a different launcher.
Try Nook Color App Manager. After running once it places itself on home page and when opened allows you to select all apps on your nt directly.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hari.sideloadapps&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5oYXJpLnNpZGVsb2FkYXBwcyJd
Not exactly what you asked but will shortcut what you wish without changing anything or adding another launcher.
Good Luck!
Root Explorer will let you change default application for a given file. Only use if you are rooted! If you need instructions just ask!
