[Q] LINUX on the GTAB - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Team,
has anyone tried this and had it work?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-962023.html
It talks about Ubu 10.1 with lxfe running on a phone, but several outside sourses have said that would make it usable by any android device
that sounds shaky, but when i followed the instructions, i didnt et ANY errors.
of course it wouldnt boot, at least waiting 10 minutes and i still saw the boot messages, so i figured that there IS hope, i just know i dont knoe enough to poke around myself.
anyone with suggestions, im all ears
help please
thanks

mindwave,
There have been people here working with ubuntu up through the latest Narwhal.
A couple of quick searches should turn up the threads.

I have this setup and running great on my gtab running vegan ginger.

butch,
i know there have been folks here working on them, but this one has 2 attractive features.
1) it runs soley from the SD card. I know some folks flash daily, but personally i really only want to re flash my tablet for a good reason.
2) its SIMPLE, Im in the midst of perforiming a MAJOR systems upgrade at my office PLUS raising a 5yo AND publishing 5 books, so for me, simple is awesome.
but i agree i think there are some folks here that have done some AMAZING work and I appreciate them all. matter of act I sa VS was selling GTABS for $279 yesterday on Amazon, and If i hadnt JUST biought the wife a NC I would have certainly ordered another one JUST to play with

What is that second link supposed to go to? It looks empty to me.
I use ubuntu as my daily driver, and think it'd be awesome to try on my gTab. I followed one of the guides that used the VNC method. It was neat, but also annoying and wasteful because it was running inside Android. So, I'm really interested in getting this other method working.

Upgrading my XV6800 to WM6.5

I've been reading through a couple of threads on this board concerning upgrading my XV6800 to WM6.5 and I have what may possibly be some stupid questions.
First - I'm the happy owner of two XV6800's so I was planning on using the not-currently-activated one as my guinea pig in case I brick the phone. I've downloaded what appear to be the most current upgrade files from theUnlockr.com and some instructions from that site. What I need to know is is theUnlockr a reliable site? Are these the most current files available? I'm currently upgraded to the 3.57.605.2 ROM and the 3.37.78 radio and I am looking to upgrade the HardSPL (which is what, exactly?), the radio (to 3.42.50 - which, if I am not mistaken, someone mentioned was eating battery life?) and the ROM using the version Unlockr has up as their latest favorite (RMverizonTitanWM65V2[1].1Heavy). I am pretty sure I can follow the directions that were given, but I'm hoping someone here can advise me if I should.
With all these updates running around everyone's 'kitchens' - it's hard for a relative noob like me to know which is the best update for her. I don't really need GPS - though I may load Garmin XT on my phone at some point - but I would like to have an efficient, elegant ROM on my phone that will not hog all my memory and will still give me at least all my current functionality (though hopefully more). Should I even be looking to update to WM6.5? Which update version do you folks think is the best for the Titan/Mogul/XV6800?
Thank you in advance for your patience and for the AMAZINGLY generous soul who has spent the time to generate these files! I went to the Verizon site and they don't seem to even remember what the 6800 looks like! And HTC doesn't have much either. I was amazed to find these sites. You guys are a godsend!
Ariel
Follow below just use whatever rom you want. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=33857
Thank you for the thread link. I've upgraded roms before, but it never hurts to have detailed directions like that. Good deal. However, what I was looking for was advice on whether or not the 6800 performs better under the available roms or if, in the experienced opinion of the developers on this site, it was better left as Microsoft intended? Does the fact that it only comes with 64 MB of RAM hurt it when loading WM6.5? Most of the new devices coming out with 6.5 have more than that and I wondered if I could get some advice before I jumped in. That's all.

The Titan is a very durable device. In my experience you can flash it at least a hundred times..
So my advice is to try as many ROMs as you like. 6.1, 6.5, Light, Heavy, Naked, Stock. Whatever it doesnt matter. Just keep going until you find what floats your boat.
LOL! Well, I doubt I'll be doing it a hundred times, but I figured I'd try and save myself some mistakes by asking the experts who have.
BTW, I think you were the one who came up with the ROM I've loaded (2.1 heavy) - very nice so far! I'm still getting a feel for it and I haven't tried to load any of my own software on it yet, but so far it's very slick. Thanks!

No problem sir. Glad I could be of assistance. My main computer is broke at the moment and I awaiting a new power supply now, currently using my spare computer (I dont have a spare 1000watt power supply to run my main pc for the banterers lol). Or else I would have my ROMs updated. More for you to mess around with. But the ones I have uploaded now should work out fine. I noticed in the nuetools folder though the leds shortcut is a folder. I fixed that though just have to re-cook and re-upload. Among other changes.
If I were to upgrade to the fix you describe, I'd only have to do the ROM again, right? The hardSPL and radio would be fine? See? I told you, stupid questions...
you are correct only the rom

[Q] Hard bricked my gtab after trying to install android 3.0

I attempted to flash my gtab with Android OS 3.0. I am not a noob to flashing a new FW so I am not sure what happened. But now my gtab sits at the viewsonic screen and that's it. I try to boot into CW but when I press the Vol+ key I get the message at the top:
"Detect a recovery key pressed"
"Booting recovery kernel image"
And that is it. So I can't boot into CWM to mount my storage. Can ANYBODY please help me?!?!?! I'm freakin out that I have ruined my gtab.
Thanks
-Buddah
You tried to jump a cliff and fell down the great chasm. What you need to do is visit my website (just put it up today) and follow the procedure to nvflash. It's written for beginners like yourself so I'm sure you won't have any problem with it.
http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/nvflash.htm
What happened was you tried tried to use the wrong CWM. Just read my website and you'll see what I mean.
Added by edit.
Also, visit my ROM page for the appropriate way to flash a ROM.
Assuming you used Bottle of Smoke, were you on a 1.1 ROM (ie. 3588 stock, VEGAn-TAB or CM7) and then flashed with cwm? If so, that's your root cause (1.1 ROM jumping to a 1.2 ROM with cwm = soft brick).
As mentioned, you need nvflash to fix it. It's most likely a soft-brick, not a hard brick.
dun dun dun....another one bites the dust, da da dun dun dun
Many many thanks! I NVflashed my gtab and I am back up and running.
There's been a wave of people soft-bricking their gtab because they were not aware of the 1.1 - 1.2 issue. Wonder if that has anything to do with the recent woot and tigerdirect sales...

Just curious. Did you use my nvflash instructions or the ones in this forum? I just want to get a feel of if my site is helpful to beginners at all. I've simplified the instructions as much as I could without giving up the technical stuff.

*raises her hand slowly*
I got a gtab from woot. I soft-bricked it because it came with the 1.2 bootloader and I installed CWM on it (wanted to install CM7) Luckily the instructions on this forum got me back up and running with nvflash.
P.S. Wish I would've know about your website good intentions. The post I followed was very good, but I always like to see more than one set of instructions before doing something I'm not comfortable with. Acutally I wish I would've seen that stuff before I soft-bricked my gtab :-(
I will say this, once you know how to use NVFlash you can do a lot more experimenting...the worst case is you lose a configuration and have to re-load apps.
I think its sad to know so many GTabs are out in the wild running stock, with people going "These Android tabs are Crap!"....
@goodintentions:
I followed your instructions to the letter and that is what did it for me. It was very accurately detailed and left no room for interpretation. I work in IT Support so I have a fair amount of experience reading crappy instructions. Yours was very helpful and again, thank you for saving me so much time and frustration.

That's one of the problems with Android vs *gasp* Ipads, the fragmentation and butchering by some vendors leave a bad taste in some peoples mouths, so to speak.
If not for the developers working on the Gtab, I would have probably taken mine back way before now. Some people aren't all that tech savvy and even me, having worked with PC and various gadgets hardware and software wise for many years, and I still scratch my head from time to time.
I've never had stock but keep testing ROMS. Even the more stable ones had bugs. I wish there was a really good stable Honeycomb out I'm considering the Asus tablet but want to wait for Kal-El. Partly because of the better screen/ram. Things that will never get fixed/upgraded with software.
I think part of the problem is that a lot of the times communication is hard between the tech savy and the not-so tech savy.
In the android world, we say "flash" instead of "install". Believe it or not, but this is a source of confusion for a lot of people out there. For kicks, I did a search and couldn't find a single explanation that says something like flash = install. Remember that we're dealing with people who came from the PC world.
The confusion gets progressively worse from there. What's clockworkmod? What's recovery? What's nvflash? Try searching for these terms and you will find explanations that only induce more questions.
I regularly have to instruct totally tech-illiterate people how to use their devices. This has given me an insight into how to communicate with people who are not tech savy.
I remember my first PDA (a DELL AXIM) and had a hard time wrapping my head around how the OS and firmware were integrated. I was used to the the whole hardware / OS separation on PC's and this was hard to ween myself off of. My DAP's were the same way as my PDA, and so when I started messing with Android it at least made some sense to me.

This did confuse me at first, but something dawned on me as to why it may be like this. In the android world, we do install apps. So saying that we are installing a rom would possibly lead to more confusion. "where's the APK for me to install Brilliant Corners?" etc.
Seems we use Flash when speaking of operating systems, but install when speaking of applications.
But we don't ever hear people say "I flashed windows 7 last night."

fortunately (or unfortunately ependong on your outlook) we don't have 17 different interpretations of one Windows OS version. And most lay users really don't repetatively install different operating systems, either.

[Q] NOOBIE here might have buyers remorse..help me love my gtab :)

Hi!
I am a NOOB here..(yes my post will prove it) but I know from what I have read online and from other sites that someone here may be able to help me.. I know once this is read someone will want to post"Why didn't you search first?" Well I did and came up with a ton of threads(some relevant and some not but none really were what I am looking for I think) I am constantly travelling with my company and really do not have the time that some here may have to search all the posts for what I am looking for..plus I suffer from severe adhd which unless it is laid out step by step I get distracted and wander..like I am doing now lol... So please be gentle and I hope someone here can find the time to answer my question.. And again thanks
Here goes!!-
Been a lurker for awhile but been away(overseas) came back and had a great deal( I thought) on a viewsonic gtab cross my desk for 125.00...so I took the plunge from casual reading on net that I could root etc.. I have never owned a tablet so this is my first..
HELP ME LOVE MY GTAB!!!
Now I didnt know which subforum this belongs and if the mods have to move it so be it.. but I need help..and this is the help I am looking for-
I hate the tapntap..I want to root but do not know which rom to go with..I game alot and watch videos alot and grooveip alot... I hope that helps people in the suggestions for which rom I should use. I am computer savvy and follow instructions well...so please point me to anything that might help..I of course would love to have the latest (ics) but hear there is some limited functionality..if I am incorrect in this and some of the limitations in gingerbread please feel free to correct me.
I like to tinker...any cool tinkering/hacks I can do to this tab(that wont completely brick it lol) any sites to suggest..sites for people that love their gtab etc
Basically I just want to feel I got a good deal and I want to root but dunno which one to go to..and I want to keep my camera (for now) but if I see I am not using it much I may flash to something else later...but guys give me all your advice on which rom I should go to first that is the most stable and will suit the needs I outlined earlier... thank you for letting me be long winded..
BTW I love the site but feel overwhelmed with this..which is why I posted..so don't hate..appreciate that I look to your knowledge lol
Hi Bro!
Like you I was kind of lose with all this information about Gtab. My poor english made of google translator do not help me. But if you read a lot, perhaps you can reach something.
Did you know that site? http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/
Well, that name isnt encouraging, but you will found good and easy information in this site. You know, easy steps, everything explained. Good to begin with.
Currently I am using this rom :Beasty/Clemsyn Ultimate Froyo Combo - Simply THE BEST (1.2 bootloader only)
Very fast, good for everything and all things are working, I guess.
Well, read a lot, read again and try something. As always, If you brick your gadget, all responsability is your. Let us know if something go wrong. If you reach success, let us know too. Is good substantiate, your problems can help other people in future.
As I already said, sorry for my poor english.
Good luck Dude.
I agree with jonnybr. Beastly-Clemsyn is my favorite rom when it comes to the stability and speed, at least for me, nothing else has matched it. Everything works, camera, hardware accel., even newer versions of most Gapps and most games work with no problem at all. Only exception is that if you use a USB mouse with your tablet, the orientation will be messed up but that's the price you pay for Skype to work.
If you are quite savvy and enjoy tinkering, maybe try a few different roms and see what you like best. Some of the others that are great are FrankenTab, CM7 (runs great but no HW accel.) and of course ICS (no camera yet and still a Beta build), but if you are looking for a working camera, low risk of problems and stability your best bet is to try one of the Froyo roms like Beastly or FrankenTab.
Funny, I started messing around with mine when I first got it to add functionality and make this thing actually useful and enjoyable. Come to find out, I get more use and enjoyment out of tinkering and messing with it than I do actually using it for it's intended purpose!
I have to agree with jonnybr as well. We were all noobies to at one point, but you made a well worth investment on the tablet. This tablet is virtually brick proof with the NVflash method. If it where me I would stick with a 1.2 boot loader, you can get the NVflash file from the link posted by jonnybr. That boot loader is ultimately the best for stability and reliability. Beastly rom is the best for a froyo rom. For visual pleasure I would lean towards VeganTab. Granted HW accel. is not the greatest, its a hacked version, but it is a 2.3 Gingerbread rom. A lot of potential with that particular rom. For me I currently am using DRH ICS since I don't really use my camera for anything special. This thing is more or less my touch screen netbook. Happy hunting.

[Q] Permanent Root for NT with CM7

I have a Nook Tablet 8gig that I rooted about 10 months ago with no problems. I have had no complaints so I have not mucked around with it, but now I am wondering about updating a bit. The issue is that I want to be able to use an external keryboard dock with my NT, and I read that it was only possible with CM7 (not sure if that means CM7 and above). I rooted the NT using the great instructions and files recommended in the developers thread, but to be honest I have no idea what my nook is rooted with- it works well so I have not messed with it.
I am essentially looking for instructions on how to re-root my NT after I re-set it to factory, or how to alter my current root to run CM7. My screen is half wonked, and I may take it back since I got the extended warrenty, especially if I have to re-root it for this anyway.
Also...what is CM7? Is that an Android version?
As a side note: Can anyone confirm that you can use an external keyboard with CM7 or above?
What do you want to do first?...do you want to return to stock so that you can return your nt...or do you want to flash cm7? (cm7 is a ROM by the way a version of Android os)

Ultimately what I want to do is run an external keyboard, and the information I have is that they will run on CM7. I will probably (assuming my warranty will cover this) be getting this one fixed to replaced soon, so I will need to re-root when I get it back, but for now I don't see the need to re-root if I don't have to.

If your nook is broken already, why bother doing anything to it? Just get it fixed then address the things you want to address. And while you are waiting for the replacement see the next line.
After reading above quote along with your original post you honestly need to read...A LOT. You need to learn at least the basic lingo before you even make an attempt to do anything. Failure to have even an iota of understanding will only lead to failure, complaints, and frustration. Spend a few hours going through the posts on here. There are several new user guides. Read them. Re-Read them. Read them again. Learn to understand what people are talking about when someone says something like "Flash x, y, or z".
As for the keyboard question, I am fairly certain that it doesn't work on ANY rom. They are working on getting the OTG portion of the kernel ironed out. While it is called a tablet it is a glorified E-Reader. The devs have done an awesome job making the Nooks into what they are today (for those of us that have modified them),

I have read several places where cm7 has allowed keyboard use for users. They are not expensive, and I would really like to try.
As for getting it fixed...well I love my nook and use it every day, so I have been loathe to take it in. I suppose that is silly.

You will love it more when it works completely and isn't "wonky". You will survive without it for a little bit. Trust me you won't die. Also because CM7 allows for a keyboard doesn't mean every device running CM7 will. Search the forums for more information. I know that some of the developers have been working on it for CM10 but I don't recall seeing any posts saying that they have it working definitively.
As for specific sites or tutorials. Just visit the various android boards and look for the Noob guides. Search google for more details on subjects you want to know about.

Thank, I just took it back to Best Buy and they replaced it with an HD. I thought about an HD+, but I use my nook for reading more than anything (lots of comics, some novels), and the 9" is much less comfortable for that. Now I need to root this bad boy, and I don't have to monkey around with roms other than rooting because the HD already has support for an external keyboard.
This can be closed, as far as I am concerned. Thanks.

[Q] Nexus 7 Clone?

Good day,
I bought my wife a Nook Tablet shortly after they were launched – she likes the word Nook.
As soon as root was available, I did. I also put another launcher on it. But there is still quite a bit of Nook like behavior / performance on it. I’ve not focused on the device since then. She sees others doing stuff on their machines she’d like to do, but cannot. (it’s possible, just not “easy”).
I’d like to give her my Nexus 7 but then she’d have it and I wouldn’t. So the question – what is the safest, best, easiest way to get the Nook Tablet to be like mine? NO BN content, no nothing. Just android.
Then I can set it up the way I want to.
I’m comfortable doing anything, I just have no recent Nook data so your perspective is greatly appreciated.

Flash any of the ROMs in the Dev section. They will wipe out all B&N content, but most are very good with very few issues. I use the AOKP JB Rom (link in my sig).
You will need a 6.x version of CWM (also included in the AOKP thread) to install any version of JB (and possibly ICS), but it's fairly easy to do if you follow instructions.
Making a CM10 sd card is really easy if you want to try things out before putting them in internal memory. I', so happy with my CM10 card that I'm in no hurry at all to put it internally!
There is so incredibly much info here on XDA, but I did mine from this guide http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/ because I happened to stumble upon it
Thanks, guys. That what I needed to know!
