For those of us that are not getting better gps on EC01 or various Rom's like me this fix is for you.
Instructions: With Root Explorer (or similar app) go to /etc/gps.conf
In Root Explorer long press on the file and select open in text editor
Change the first line from: NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org to NTP_SERVER=us.pool.ntp.org
Then Download GPS aids from the market and run that for even better results
Save changes and reboot
ENJOY

Is there any way this can mess up GPS even more?

I think it might be time to just face the fact that the Fascinate's GPS chip sucks.
Would like to try this, but when i try to open in text editor
in root explorer, it says read-only.
Top center, there's a gray button. click that to go to r/w.
I tried this inside, in the basement while it's storming outside. Haven't turned on GPS all day and it seemed to work. GPS lock w/o Wifi TTFF in 12 seconds. GPS lock w/ Wifi TTFF in 2 seconds (Using GPS AIDS GPS status test).
Time before was around 30 seconds and 10 seconds respectively.
Ahhh of course. Thank you!

I don't think it's the chip, it's how the nav or map app tries to access the information and turns the chip on that's the issue. When I turn on Gmaps, it sometimes sits for a full minute before locking. But sometimes, it takes a second or two. Its got to be because the communication already happened between the app and the reciever.
Here's why this is my opinion. Reboot the phone and start the GPS Test app from the market(sometime within seconds even indoors), watch it find satellites and lock. Usually does it much much faster than maps. After you do this open maps, voila instant position. Theres some kind of issue with how maps initiates the GPS reception on this phone. So I keep GPS Test installed, and when I know I need to know where I am, I turn it on for 5 seconds, then open maps.
If anyone who actually knows what the hell they are doing knows how to edit the commands that Gmaps uses, you could be immortal.
Well wow, gps lock beat me before I even opened up
gps test. Amazing. Thank you!
No luck for me (everything in GPS Test just ramains at '0' or equivalent... no sats even detected!).
north-america.pool.ntp.org seems to have a fair bit higher latency than us.pool.ntp.org, but that shouldn't really make too massive of an impact. This isn't, though, gonna change your GPS from not working at all to suddenly working, just increase the lock speed a bit.
Interesting, I thought that GPS only used the satellite clocks!
GPS has almost always been livable with my Fascinate. I don't know if I am just very lucky, or if it's because I leave it on all the time.

Yeah the fascinate chip does not suck this fix is great even when I reboot my phone still locks great everytime any time you change roms re do this fix
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Yeah I know GPS is based on time delays between satellites, not entirely sure how it works so it would make sense that using a different time server might help? Just chiming in so people can hopefully understand what NTP has to do with GPS.

You and i need to knock on wood, I am in the same boat as you. Never had serious issues with it and really worry about that the most when I flash something new...
Tried this with EA28 and EC01, no luck on it for me, my GPS is fairly good, other then it my condo. Just a little frustrating when my Eris worked fine, and my wife's Droid works fine.
This cut the time to lock in half for me. Thanks.
Still not instant but noticeably faster.

Locking 8sec with 6meter but when I use gps status it locks in 3sec with 2meter and this is standing still, it gets closer when I move

I'm on CM7, I get a lock with GPS Status in 3-5 seconds. This is the best my GPS has ever worked.
My GPS doesn't work at all.
I was wondering if any of you could help me. I'm on the latest build of CM7 with the EC09 radio, and my GPS never locks. It searches for GPS, but the arrow in the notification bar remains gray and "follow the route" appears after 2-3 minutes. I have a clear view of the sky and relatively good reception. Any ideas?
I have tried 3 diffferent roms mainly. (Synergy, BAMF, and DroidTheory roms). I also have tried different radio including the newest one released today.
I turn on the GPS (all 3 are on, standalone, google, and verizon) and click on map. Even if I drive around for 30 minutes, it will never lock on and will only show a big circle indicating around 1800m. When I turn on my WiFi, google map will get close to around 5 meters, but the moment I try using the navigation, it will just say searching for GPS and will never lock on.
I have also tried using GPS Status from the market and did reset and download A-GPS XTRA Data. GPS Status will not even find a single satellite no mater how long I am driving around.
Any suggestions on what I can do?
Download gps fix from market, run that till lock and then reopen your map. As far as I know this may only work with sense ROMs.

Ran Both. As of current, I may have found out the problem. Seems like my battery cover may have been a problem. I have 2 right now, 1 for the stock battery and another for the extended 2750mah battery. I seem to have GPS issues with the stock battery cover, but when I change to the 2750mah battery cover, I get a lock pretty fast. Kinda odd since the inside of both of them look the same (the metal part)
Are they both stock covers like not bought off eBay? The covers are very important since the antanna are in the cover. Make sure they are clean, free of damage, and fully connected

Both are from verizon directly. Cover is definetely the problem after furthur checking. The problem is that I dont see any problem with it, metal part looks clean, but obviously its not touching the antenna or something.

Did you attempt to get a lock with GPS Status after the gps.conf edit and reboot? The initial lock will take a while, so make sure you have a clear view of the sky and let GPS Status run until it locks. After that you should lock within 10-20 seconds.
Google Maps just updated and it said it fixed a lot of bugs, could have been gps related because my maps loaded fast with my location flashing.

To my knowledge, having GPS on standby barely uses any battery. Only when an app updates your location.
I'd just leave it on. Maybe Juice Defender could manage it though
That's how Android works. The GPS isn't actually on unless you see the icon in the top bar. Try it yourself - open Google Maps and you'll se the icon, then close Maps and you'll see it go away.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that, I've always turned it off because I thought that it would drain my battery.
I know for a fact that the BT will drain your battery even if you have nothing connected to it so turn it off if you don't use it.

Reason people think that I bet is because when Bluetooth was new tech and only in it's first revision it didn't have any power saving features and was constantly pinging the radio if devices were connected or not. That was fixed with Bluetooth 1.3 onwards if memory serves right.
Bluetooth will not use battery unless its connected to a device, and then only will if the phone and the device get out of range from each other. I think but don't quote me, that the connecting device is in charge of pinging and staying pared and not the phone.
Gps can actually cause battery drain of you do a ton of web browsing and are using googles locstion sharing feature...it shares your location each time you load a page in the browser...so not only uses gps but the maps app as well.
This is the only scenario where I have seen it measurably effect battery

I use a program called Tasker and created a rule that turns on GPS only when I open Maps and Navigation. Tasker is a paid app but well worth it. i used it to turn on bluetooth and Nav when I get in my car in the morning, it also shuts off wifi and starts streaming Pandora. When I get to my office, it shuts off the ringer and turns on vibrate mode, shuts off the data network and stops streaming Pandora. It checks my personal email twice per day at scheduled intervals so I am not distracted.
When i plug in my headphones, a menu appears asking if I would like to launch music, pandora or phone.
Though it's a paid app, it is worth the money. Tasker is awesome.

I just bought and paid for Tasker for the GPS one click workaround.
Tasker has a learning curve, but it's like any other macro editor.
You basically make a macro that says
IF app_being_opened = Navigation
AND gps status = off
THEN Open Location Settings
DPAD Down
DPAD Down
DPAD Enter
^-- Tasker does these for you, you sit there and watch.
OPEN Navigation
And you can do the same thing for Maps or any other apps requiring GPS.
Note that I also just made one for one click 4G, too.
Works well.
Note that I'm sure the macros can be cleaned up and made more idiot-proof, but I'm nowhere near proficient with Tasker yet. There are A LOT of options.
+1 for Tasker. I am by no means an expert with it, but it definitely has a lot of functionality.
I've used it to only turn on GPS when opening certain apps (like maps, foursquare, etc.)

There is obviously a problem if multiple threads have been started to address the problem and if all the GPS widgets on the Market have to have a disclaimer saying "1 click won't work on 2.3.x devices."

If you read what I wrote you'd realize that I understand there's a small problem but c'mon..almost 7 bucks when all you have to do is pull the notification down and hit the GPS toggle? As the title says, my GPS will turn on and will lock fine but in google maps it says im about half a mile away, actually on the road i lived on when i first got the G1 like 7 years ago, if that makes any difference.
Instago says im elsewhere but keeps moving erraticly as if Im teleporting to places instantly but still within a half mile from me,
OsmAnd will get my location but only if connected to data, even though it has downloaded offline maps.
Offi travel will give me directions but from the afforementioned half mile away address. which for both apps doesnt move or change even when im moving.
I flashed an aGPS patch from on here recently which may have caused this, i dont use gps much so this may have started because of this or before, i dont know. Any ideas on ways to solve this or some things i could try?

I would try GPS Status from the market. load it, press menu button and select tools/Manage A-GPS State/ reset for a cold start and see if that helps.
You can also use it to download assistance data from the net. That app is pretty good for monitoring what is going on with your GPS. It also has a few other tools for calibrating sensors.

0 fix and only 4 satellites looks like weak GPS or just a bad spot.. Have you tried outside and going to a different location to try to get it to fix?
I just went through this the other day myself with 2 of these phones after flashing a few different ROMs. It just wouldn't pick up SATs or fix until I did a reset (cold start) with that app and drove around a little...After that it would lock even in my house...
It worked for me so I thought I'd suggest it...If you didn't know, When your GPS actually gets a fix your GPS icon in status bar should stop flashing and if it starts flashing again it has lost the fix and is searching for SATs again.

You only need internet to download A-GPS data (gps assistance) and to download map info if you use Google maps and so on...going out side should help even though you have a glass roof there could be other interference maybe?
I'm no expert, it just seemed like after I moved around (went for a drive with one and wandered my back yard with the other) while using the app and got a bunch of SATs and fixes, It would then find and fix from inside when it wouldn't before.....I just tried again and got 6 SATs and 2 fix in 60 seconds inside. It wouldn't find more than 1 sat before I did the cold start reset and did the above....In maps it puts me across the street sometimes but its close (100ft.)

Thanks,
Did as you said, reset GPS, went outside with the app running for about 40 minutes and was continuously 7 satellites found, 0 connected. Then just as I was nearly home it connected to 4 satellites. I kept it running and opened OsmAnd (offline) maps and it found where I was perfectly. Kept both running til I got home and got connected to my wifi. GPS status still has me connected, as does OsmAnd but google maps wont connect or find me. Now...... do I just leave/close the GPS status app as it is or do I need to now download aGPS data? Is there some way to 'store' the settings/locks it has now or do I just leave it and thats it now? As I dont have data outside, and my offline maps worked ok I dont really care about google maps to be honest, would just be nice if it did work.
But do I just leave it as it is now? or can I save something? or will downloading the aGPS remove the locks that just took me 40 odd minutes to find?
Thanks.

It sounds like the GPS might just be on the weak side, I'm not sure..maybe if your using a case try without it?.....All this being said, I myself have noticed a weaker GPS since I've been using KK roms compared to to stock firmware. Thought it was the weather around here though, maybe not...
As far as the app goes, I'm pretty sure it loads in the background when you use the GPS, google maps and so on. I'm not sure it is doing anything to help at that point but it shows its icon in the status bar along with the gps icon. The icon animates when it finds sats and when it gets a fix as opposed to the GPS icon that just stops flashing when you have a fix....
I just set the app to get A-GPS info every day when I'm traveling. Anytime I have a problem with getting a fix for my nav app I just reset with the GPS Status app and it starts finding sats before I even re-download A-GPS data....

I never even thought about the case.... I shall try without it on. If that makes no difference I'll go back to a stock backup I have which I know worked perfectly, just to check its not hardware related as mine too was better on non kitkat roms. And if all else fails, I'll just do what you say and set my phone to download aGPS every morning at home before I get up.

You can try to follow the link attached on my post, where a small hardware modification is explained. Maybe this will help you.
For now, I'm planning to change a part (HP/antenna part) and will probably replace it this week-end (if received !). I will post news about that as soon as possible in my post
Good lock
My GPS has a bit of a weird issue. If I turn on/reboot my phone and immediately turn on an app with GPS, then I have no problems at all.
However... if I don't do that (AKA my phone has been on for a few mins before I open a GPS based app/I close out of one of those apps and re open at a later time), my GPS does not activate and my accuracy turns to network based, at best (It's not very good). Here are a few screenshots.
I've tried turning the iZat on/off, turning GPS on/off, changing GPS accuracy, turning WI-FI on/off, and stopping each of the apps that are GPS based. However, my thoughts are that the GPS does not activate... for the GPS icon in the notification bar does not turn on when I start having my issues (See the first screenshot). If I turn on the GPS immediately after a reboot/turning the phone on initially, that GPS notification DOES light up and it works just fine. If I'm sitting on a wi-fi network, I have no issues at all. This is only when I'm relying on the network/GPS. What does everyone think? Any chance of fixing this issue? Feel free to ask for more information! Rebooting my phone for navigation is becoming frustrating.
So far my posts have been eerily silent. Thanks!
Before anything.... Have you tried going into maps app(assuming that's the app you use for navigation) settings and clearing cache/data uninstalling and installing again with a reliable WiFi Internet network?

Yes. I have tried that twice. I also tried downloading waze and checking out a few other apps with GPS location features. If I used the GPS feature within the first few mins, no problem was encountered. Anytime after that, GPS wouldn't turn on/lock on.
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one having this issue.
GPS locks for me if I'm not moving but once I move (driving), it's all whack and I get a GPS signal lost from Maps.

What have you tried so far to fix the issue?
Just changing location to high accuracy to device sensors.
I need to try clearing data and cache, as well as doing a restart to see if those work.

Got maps to work for me.
Went into apps, and deleted cache, data and Uninstalled updates.

I'm glad you got yours working! Unfortunately for me, that trick doesn't work. I am continually having the exact same problem and it spans across multiple apps. If you find anything out, let me know!
I have the same problem. My GPS not fix, in any aplication.
Sometimes, lock for fill minutes and again lost signal.
I don´t know what to do.
I've just noticed that my GPS is flakey... even when maps tells me to exit a certain road, sometimes it doesn't track me properly -- thinking maybe I stayed on the highway/etc. In my town we have an upper/lower level for I-35. My HTC One had no problem with this, but the G3 accuracy seems too poor for a lot of these complicated interchanges.

A few people (myself included) have noted the Compass is off. Does the compass point in the right direction as you're moving? I'm wondering if the compass pointing the wrong direction causes tracking issues when navigating...
Edit: To clarify, by "off" I mean the compass generally points 90 degrees or 180 degrees in the wrong direction.

My phone is loaded into a dock in my car in the portrait position, however it shows the compass direction exactly 90 degrees to the right... I wonder if GPS toolbox can re-calibrate the sensor?

I (and others) have tried GPS Toolbox, the three rotation calibration, the figure 8 calibration....I don't notice any difference - some say it fixes it for a very short period of time, but then goes back to being off.

I noticed on various custom ROMs for my M7 that I have similar issues with the compass... sometimes completely dead/static, and sometimes off just like this. I had identical problems with maps, where it thought I was jumping lanes. Apparently Maps uses some of that sensor info to figure out where you're at, even while driving.
Under the gesture menu I have use the recalibration there to fix the compass (for a while at least, haven't checked much today at work) but it got the compass to point the right way after finding a proper flat surface.

I tried that and it acted like it was going to give me a correct heading for about three seconds then quickly jumped back to being off by 90 or 180 degrees.
I exchanged my G3 in case it was a compass issue with just my phone, and the replacement does the same thing. The ATT and Verizon versions I played with didn't have the same problem (hence why I tried the exchange). Maybe it's related to the newer version of software our version has or something.
Damn, that's not a good sign.

Yeah, it's too bad too. I wound up exchanging the G3 for an S5. Between the compass (which wouldn't normally be a huge issue but I'm traveling on business three times in the next six months to big cities I've never been to before), the screen overheating warning (only happened a couple of times, but still), the lack of root (so far), and the new-ness of the phone and therefore lack of community support (and LG's general lack of quick support), I just don't have time to chance it with a new phone with so many unknowns.
Loved a lot of things about it, and who knows - in a few months when they've worked out all the kinks, maybe I'll sell the S5 and look into the G3 again (of course, by then, who knows what new phones will be announced..).
I can't go with the S5... I had to return it before this phone because it would skip during BT audio playback in my car. I tried 3 of them, all had the same issue :/
