[Q] How to clear system without root? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know what's wrong.
I've gone into recovery, and used ADB to clear out a ton of stuff, but whenever I reboot, it says there's still not enough space to install busybox (so I can't root).
It may have been from a lagfix, because ever since I had to ODIN back from Eugene's Dead Horse Kernel, it's done that. Does anyone know what to do? I'm stuck on stock (it also soft-bricks whenever I flash a ROM) until I get this fixed.

can you install other apps?

It allows me to install other apps, but if I try to root, it doesn't root (won't install busybox and says there's no space), and when I try to flash a new ROM, it just soft bricks.

can you try one click root? if not try to install Eugene's froyo that doesn't brick. that might clean things on your phone.

Question, can I do this through ODIN (not at home so I can't really look), because flashing through CWM doesn't help.

which one are you talking about?

Any ROM. Nothing will flash through CWM. I rmemeber seeing that when you flash something, it writes in system. It just doesnt do that anymore.

Problem flashing any .zip with Clockwork...

I can't get ANYthing to install via clockwork, everything says can't open <insert file name>.zip, (bad), installation aborted. Uninstalled ROM Manager and reinstalled, etc... can't get anything to install. I apologize if this is a dumb question or if I'm overlooking something but any help would be appreciated, thanks.

How are you getting into clockwork? Try rom manager of you're not. Also try downloading the roms again
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
It is ROM Manager, as stated in the OP, and it's not ROMs I'm trying to install, it's various .zips like the new Swype, original i900 Boot Animations, etc...
Oh I see, what rom are you currently running?
As for the swype, try and use a file manager to open the .zip and manually install it.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Stock ROM, rooted and lag fixed. The swype isn't an APK.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
In rom manager, did you click "flash clockworkmod recovery"? If not thats what you need to do, select the vibrant option and your phone will reboot into clockwork. Search the forums here there is a good walk through of clockwork installation and usage
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
It sounds like you're trying to flash from the stock recovery, not Clockwork. Make sure you click "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" in ROM Manager and possibly "Reinstall Packages" if it still takes you to the stock recovery.
It was definitely from clockwork, but I got it. Apparently by coincidence, all four separate files I had tried to install had been corrupted somehow. Re-downloaded through Skyfire, re-flashed and all is well.

Was not intending to make you sound clueless friend, have seen others miss that step, and you didn't list it so thought it might help. At any rate, glad you got it resolved.

Voodoo is a lag fix. It moves some stuff to your memory card to make your phone run faster.

No, it definitely hasn't moved my stuff to my memory card...
It converts the /data partition on your phone to EXT4, which is a far superior file system than RFS, which the phone would otherwise use. This increases your disc I/O speed and makes the phone run smoother.
So is it better then the lag fix that I have now which is the Ryan lag fix from the app that's on the market. The voodoo is on that app but I'm not sure if its a better one especially that its found in the settings under kernal. And I don't have any knowledge about changing rge kernal.

In order to use the Voodoo lagfix you must have a kernel that is compatible with Voodoo. Voodoo is something that you must read about and research before toying with it. I would suggest you go here and read about it. The OCLF app you are using gives you the option to update your kernel to a Voodoo compatible one and installs the Voodoo lagfix; it will also back up your current Kernel. Hope this helped a little. The only downside of Voodoo is that anytime you want to flash a new ROM or kernel or any flashable zip folder you pretty much need to disable it to prevent damage from occurring.

Lag Fix, PLEASE HELP!!!!!
Hey guys,
Im fairly noob
This is my issue
Bought samsung vibrant i9000m
Unlocked it
Rooted it
NOW i want to lag fix.
So, i update the firmware to froyo 2.2 using kies, everything went fine. Then i installed OCLF, but i always get an error saying that there is not enough space in /data to complete this fix
So, i now know that it is talking about the internal sd. Tried to erase as much as i could, but i could only get to around 815megs free, and according to other posts, i would need at least 1.5 gigs.
Erased everything i could ( apps, samsung default apps that come with 2.2 etc)
Still not enough space
SO.....
Tried to use voodoo
The install process says to simply download the file, put it in the internel sd card`s root and rename it 'update.zip' ( yes made sure it was not update.zip.zip) then reboot in recovery and select ' apply update.zip'.
So i did.
I ALWAYS get this ANNOYING error 'signature verification failed, installation aborted'
At this point i want to smash my phone on the ground...but i didn't, cuz i know someone can help
CONCLUSION: im on froyo 2.2, i want to lag fix with either OCLF OR VOODOO, witch ever can work. Please remember i am still a noob, so i cant really try to flash anything using odin yet...
Baseband: JL2.
PLEASE HELP ME FINALLY LAG FIX THIS PHONE!!!!
A way to get around the signature failing is to download rom manager and boot into recovery mode with clockwork mod. It has an option to not validate the signature and should let you finish.

i downloaded and installed rom manager, reboot using clockwork mod but it still says that it failed because of signature... what gives!!!

froyo 2.2
build: JL2
PLEASE HELP!! im sooo tired of trying soooo many different things and it doesnt seem to work...
If this actually works and someone can give me a step by step, it would be the best x-mas gift!! haha

((Q)) phone does not flash rom.

So I had nero 4.1
Went to flash ginger clone 2
Installed. But phone is stuck on bootloop
So I uzed odin to flash bak to stock
Everything went fine.
Bu not when I go to install the update.zip.... It doesnt seem to install it all the way.
Progression bar moves like a half an inch. Then says it installed.
I do have superuser w.e that **** is installed.
But when I go to flash a rom. It takes me to the "reinstall package screen" which tells me the update.zip did not install.
What can be wrong?
Ive gone bak to stock before. A d rooted again. No problem.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
it SOUNDS like you are trying to flash the ROM useing the stock recovery.....this is a no-no. heres what you do:
1. ODIN back to stock, just to start fresh
2. Root your device, i like to use OCLF app from the market
3. download/install "ROM Manager" from the market
4. Select "Flash Clockwork recovery" (select vibrant as your device)
5. You now have Clockwork setup to be your recovery menu. to access it, just boot into recovery like you usually do, select "reinstall packages"....this will boot you into clockwork everytime.
6. Clockwork is pretty user friendly, to flash your ROM just select "choose zip to install", find your ROM, and flash away! (DO NOT rename your ROM to "update.zip", this name must be reserved exclusively for clockwork recovery...so never rename anything to update.zip, and never delete your existing update.zip)
Now, if you are using Clockwork, it sounds like it may be a corrupt .zip. Redownload the ROM and try again (I would suggest downloading from a PC).
Ty for the quick reply.
Im on the road now so ill try it when I get home

Alright ima get on that.

do you mean it has it, but you arent able to use it? it should be the first or second option
------
if its there, but its not available to you, these means you are already rooted.....which is not possible if you ODINed back to stock...........if you need, i can give you the root update.zip to flash through recovery....basically all OCLF does is install the update.zip to your sdcard for you to flash through the stock recovery. then you flash it and it installs busybox and superuser, and youre rooted.
now once you download ROM manager and select "flash clockwork" it will install the clockwork update.zip to your sdcard (which obviously replaces the previous root update.zip, but you dont lose root).
so do you see how this works now?

Can't get to Clockwork recovery

Hello all, I'm hoping I can get some help. I cannot get passed stock recovery to Clockwork recovery. I am rooted and have done this many times so I know that you have to reinstall packages to get there, sometimes twice, but I have done it repeatedly and it keeps going back to stock recovery. Any ideas?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Maybe install ROM Manager and reflash the ClockworkMod Recovery?
You may need to check if you are indeed rooted check by manually going into Download mode, if that works you may need to reflash CWM, if not then you may need to reroot the phone
I've tried going though rom manager and it takes me to the same stock recovery. Reinstalling packages isn't working. I used Odin, went back to stock, used samsung kies mini to update to Froyo, Super one click root, and then 3e recovery. I'm not sure if I'm musing something but I've fine all of this before and had no issues until now.

I'm also having a problem with this, but it didn't start until after I flashed CM7 for Vibrant. Now the i9000 boot up goes before the Vibrant one, as well as not being able to get into CMW.
I finally got into recovery, had to reinstall packages about 45 times. Thanks for the help anyway

My phone hates me, want to help?

Well, I have tried to flash my phone with cm7 for the last 3 days and when I go to reboot recovery it freezes at the LG screen and I am forced to pull my battery possibly bricking my phone. Does anyone, I mean anyone have a safe sure way to flash my phone? And I have no pc access.....srry

You need a computer. Either you didn't install recovery right. Or you're too impatient. Sometimes it hangs for a minute or so.

use terminal emulator and reflash your recovery with flash_image. you got a bad flash or a bad download of the recovery it sounds like.
there is a slim chance you aren't rooted correctly too, in which case it won't let you flash the recovery until you get permanent root. hopefully this isn't the case.
Pretty dumb question what's flash image n just incase how do I check. For a permanent root?

My advice is not to do ANYTHING until you are at a computer and have at least a half an hour available. This sounds like your first time flashing a ROM, take some time to look up key terms and such, your patience will reward you greatly. It is difficult to flash without a computer. Go to a friends house, a library, something and do it from there. To check if you have root, download the app root checker from the market. Then, after confirming root status, work from there and flash a new recovery by pushing it through ADB. Then, place the ROM on the sd card and flash it through your recovery, then Google Apps. If you follow everything I say, and it still doesn't work, come back to this thread or send me a PM and we will go from there. Look into guides before posting, not trying to be mean, but they are there for a reason.
