i am trying to restore a nandroid because i recently had to reset my phone and durring the restore when it gets to system it gets and error saying "error while formatting /system!" and im losing my cool trying to figure out why. Can one of you gods help me fix this please and thank you.
Bump. I am having the same problem. Anyone know what's going on?
I cant claim to be one of the gods but if you need the phone operation ASAP you could just flash a fresh download of a ROM. Pop out the SD card and load it on a PC, copy ROM to it and boot up into recovery.
I always backup my data from apps incase I get this same problem. You can just reflash a new one and load up the data and be done with it. Sucks though I know Ive had this happen before too. Thats the best I have for you guys sorry
Before jumping to any conclusions try this.
Get a ROM flashed/boot up normally.
Install ROM Manager.
Open ROM Manager.
Menu > Settings > check "Erase Recovery" > back > Flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
Boot into recovery and see if the issue persists.

Sounds like CWM hasn't been updated with the root tutorial? just a guess, protekks suggestion should fix this. This was an issue when the thunderbolt was first rooted and CWM flashed.
Is it so that I cant restore a ICS backup when current rom is Jelly Bean?
Jelly Bean ROM? For the thunderbolt?

I'm sure they just searched the forum for it and didnt look at the device, which is a good thing

I tried upgrading my girlfriend's Vibrant to one of the new 2.2 ROMs and she didn't like it, so I disabled voodoo, booted into recovery and attempted to restore the backup I made in nandroid. After 30 minutes of hanging on 'restoring data', I gave up and tried to reboot. Phone is now stuck in the vibrant logo and will not boot into recovery. Tried pulling the battery and it just reboots back to the Vibrant logo.
I know there is a way to fix this with something called Odin? (not sure if that's the name). My only problem is I don't want to delete any of her non-restorable stuff. Is there any way to fix this without deleting anything that can't be restored? Also, any idea why the nandroid backup didn't work? I'm afraid that even if I can get back into recovery, the restore will just freeze again.
I did notice when it was wiping to install the ROM originally, it also froze on deleting data, but a reboot fixed that. So maybe a reboot will fix that too but I'm not sure. Any help?
do you reboot when you have disabled voodoo and hear linda say 'convertion successful' ? sometime it will not work proper if you disable and flash something without reboot

I made this same mistake the first time I flashed. What it is, its that nandroid does not backup the kernel, so you have to flash one with the same version of android. At this point you will have to use odin to do it then once you have you can do a nandroid restore.

o i'v just got what your problem is! you should flash a 2.1kernel before nand restore. because it will not restore your kernel

I think maybe he can get into recovery and flash a new 2.1 kernel. Will this work?

Post in the right forum and you will get the answer to how to fix it.
Moved to Q&A as not development
look at the bright side... at least ur Vibrant isnt stuck on the Captivate screen....
I'm sorry about posting in the wrong forum, honest mistake but it won't happen again. Can someone exolain to me what I need to do, in order, to fix this? I need to use odin, then flash a 2.1 kernel, then run nandroid restore? Which 2.1 kernel should I use?
Hey I was trying to install Axura final the other day and couldn't. I would go to Rommanager, install rom from sd, pick the room, then it would go into clockwork recovery and it looked like it would start downloading. It would then quit downloading almost immediately and take me to the main clockwork recovery menu. I would then just try to reinstall system packages(after renaming it update.zip) and it would come up with an error saying that it couldn't mount my sd or something like that. Any ideas why? I know its probably something simple that I'm not doing
Anyone else ever have this problem, or have any idea how to fix it?
Where you running a lag fix? If so disable it. And its always better to odin back to stock before flashing a new rom
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
No I didnt have a lag fix, I guess il have to odin back to stock and try that thanks
So I've was running team whiskeys bionic v 1.3 rom but after noticing some lag I decided to start from scratch and reinstall it. I disabled voodoo and flashed stock rom with Odin. Everything went well. Now here's my problem, I put my phone into recovery so that I can root it. But when I click "reinstall packages" I'm taken to the "clockwork recovery menu" (even though rommanager isnt installed). I try to install the the update.zip file from there (it works) but when my phone reboots, the super user app isn't installed and my phone still isn't rooted. Please help.
Are you going to try and flash a new rom or are you going to just root your phone and stick with the stock rom
Rom manager creates a update.zip file on your sd card that is the cw recovery update.zip If you want to root your phone using the update.zip method you have to delete the cw recovery update.zip file 1st
If you are going to flash a new rom then you don't have to root your phone just flash a new rom thru cw recovery and all the roms come rooted already
It is my understanding that the update.zip isn't a full root. Not sure how that works out...
Here is what i do. After u load the update.zip use the 3 button method to load whichever TW rom u want to use (I have bionix 1.3.1 and love it). This will give u full root access. This is what I do every time I load a new rom.
U should consider hitting up the TW crew on their IRC. They are great with help.

Hey guys thanks for ur help! Phones is now rooted and running bionix v 1.3.1 without problems. So basically all I did was a hard reset after flashing stock odin and then I just formatted the internal sd card which deleted all traces of ce recovery. Yes.it deleted everything else but I wanted to start from scratch anyways.
lOL MAYBE fixing permissions and installin root (superuser option in advance menu of recovery) form clockwork recovery WAS A EASIER OPTION ? but hey u got it anyway
I don't know if this is exactly the same issue you or not, but I did flash to stock rom (KB1), and now unable to root myself. I've used the superoneclick and still nothing happens. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Did u make sure you had usb debugging checked?

Yep I sure did, still wouldn't work. I'm kinda scared to try a different one, i dont want to have to spend 150 dollars to get a new phone.
What exactly happens when you try to root with superoneclick?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
It goes through the norm and completes like norm, but when I look for superuser its not there
Well the way I got it to work was after flashing odin, I just formatted the phones internal sd card. After that I just placed the update.zip file into the sd card rebooted into stock recovery and installed the file.

I tried to flash my rom to 2.3.3 but since i had it in the wrong folder it wouldnt let me so i restored to my old rom, but now its stuck at the boot screen(it says overstock) and its been like that for a while and im really worried!!! the rom its restoring to is sweethoney the latest version and i did it from clockwork recovery
does anyone know how to get pass the boot screen? im worried to turn my phone off
Sounds to me like you'll need to resort to odin.
You can always try to get into recovery mode first, and flash sweet honey again, then try restoring your backup.
is it just my phone, or when you flash the rom the rom has to be in the INTERNAL sd? i had my new rom on the external and i could find a way to access it =(
before odin, try going back to CWM Recovery and restore you orignal phone system, thats if you backed it up before you done any rom
We'll to you first question flash back to original with Obin and to you second you can only flash a new rom from your internal memory. Read the OP before you flash it tell you were to put it. Good Luck

I rooted my buddies phone for him pretty much so he could use wifi tether. Told him to make a nandroid before he does anything. He said he did. He called me this am and said he tried to flash an ics ROM from Scott's site and now his phone won't boot past the HTC screen. He said he tried to retire the backup but it didn't work nor did a factory reset.
Can I just get him to flash a GB based ROM and get him back to square one or must I get an ics ROM loaded up since he already tried to get that on there?
Can I just have him load the stock ruu for GB? Where can I locate that?
He might have forgot the pg98img?? I know it happened to me when i first had ics
What did you do to fix the problem? He has never flashed anything so he probably forgot something. Just trying to figure out what I need to do to fix his phone when I see him later tonight.

Thanks for all the help, really appreciate it
Your "friend" (lol, j/k) should be able to do a battery pull, get back into recovery and then just start the process of flashing a new ROM again. Have him wipe the cache and dalvik cache first. I don't know why the nand won't restore, maybe he didn't make it properly?
Is he using Amon Ra? CWM was known to be buggy on this phone, don't know if that has been addressed. If he's using CWM then maybe he should switch to Amon Ra. iirc it can also restore a nand made in CWM.

Thanks for the reply. My rezound is running smoothly! My buddy should have hit me up before trying to flash anything but he didn't. I'm running Amom but when I tried to install it on his phone it wouldn't take so I installed cwm. He said he made a backup but it won't restore. I will try to install Amon again on his phone and see if I can get his back up to work. I have a nand on my phone off the stock ROM. Do you think I can use my sd card in his phone and try to restore that or is it phone specific? I wouldn't think it is though
I don't know about restoring someone else's nand.
Also, if he gets a mainver error check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459347
But if you flash in fastboot you don't have to worry about mainver, it will flash no problem.
You can find out what mainver the phone is on in fastboot using the following command:
fastboot getvar all
