Best Video Player - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I just got my device and my primary use is for watching video (I commute on the bus). Do you guys have any advice on which player is the best? Or which formats run the smoothest/best?
Any advice/experience helps. Thanks in advanced.
EDIT: I'm running Vegan 5.1

Moboplayer works well on my Nook. Vital player is also good as well. If you're stock rooted/2.2 based ROM, these are nice to have. If you're on 2.3 based ROM, you need to have these

Which ROM are you running? And what is your primary video filetype?

Apologies, I'm running Vegan 5.1
As for video type, most of the times just .mp4

I've been using mPlayer. Adds some nice features over stock. It doesn't add any additional codec support beyond what is stock on the device, but it's played everything I've thrown at it so far. Well worth a free download!

CM7 and Moonsoon's Vulkano

Well I am on my third Gingerbread rom (6th overall rom) and I finally have gotten the Vulkano to stream in all situations. Last night I downloaded CM7's nightly build 58 and flashed my G-Tablet. Installation was very smooth using clockworkmod and all 128 apps were restored using Titanium back with no problems. I had wiped and formated just about everything I could before doing the installation. After that I went to the market and downloaded the Vulkano player and at last sucess. I was able to stream from the vulkano both locally and over the internet. I realize some other people have had sucess using Corwins rom (CM7 based), and that was going to be next if this did not work. I had previously tried G-Harmony with no sucess, and then Vegan Tab GB with limited succes. The strange thing with Vegan Tab was it would stream over the internet however it would not stream when I was home locally. Watching the bandwidth I was getting at home the software player seemed to choke everytime it was over 1 mb/sec. When I was out of the house and connected over the internet it worked fine at speeds anywhere from 300-900k. This leads me to believe the hardware accelleration that is now included in CM7 is working with this app allowing it to run over my local network. Another thing that I have struggled with is getting recorded shows downloaded to my G-Tab. Well I still can not get it to work with any rom and the vulkano player but I have a work around for now. By down loading the videos using UPNPdownloader (avlalable in the market for free) you can then watch the recordings using MOBOPlayer or Rockplayer. Now for even better news when Rockplayers asks if you want to use hardware decoding and you answer yes the videos run close to flawlessly. On the other two GB roms it obviously would not work using the hardware decoding. They did run on the roms using the software decoding but they would stutter even at the lowest recorded resolutons. When playing high quality recordings they would be unwatchable due to the delay in video processing in which the sound which was a full 3-5 seconds ahead of the picture. This would make all sense since the Vulkano records in the H.264 video format and if I am not mistaken that is the portion of hardware accelleration that is working. Well I hope this helps someone else.
Lastly I do miss the Vegan Tab interface, the VT Launcher was very smooth and the rom was much more tablet oriented. I can not wait until gojimi includes this in his rom since the rom is CM7 based if I am not mistaken. Please excuse any typos and good luck.

Interesting. I have a vulkano, and am running vegantab with pershoot's latest overclocked kernel - I have not gotten around to getting it set up, but under that other OS (er, iOS?) I would pull over 2Mbit/sec (more like 3) for local HD content, and 1.5+ for remote (yay for comcast HSI) - I should test it out. I'll let you know what I see tomorrow!

Sounds good I am interested to see what happens. I am currently streaming between 1.6 and 2.0 mb/secs locally using the wireless router Verizion put in when I got Fios. My iphone streams locally between 300k - 600k usually.

VeganGinger just gives me a black screen and spinning "buffering" with the Vulkano inside the home. Meh. Not so good!
For the record, Vulkano (Monsoon) refuses to support G Tab and Android 2.2 at all. I'm now in a legal war with these clowns. be careful on CM7 as you may still encounter buffering quite often and screen lockups.
Vulkano issues on CM7 for Evo
I have the Vulkano player working flawlessly on my Nook Color running CM7.1 RC1
However, I cannot for the life of me get it working CM7 and my Evo 4G. Tried the stable and testing builds. I'm still debating if I really want to move to a nighly, but I might just do it to see if it works and restore back to 7.1 RC1.
BTW, I'm so happy they finally have a root process for the Evo 4G on Gingerbread!

Hello,
I am trying to make if possible the android vulkano application to work with 4.4.2 or Lollipop and stream while the screen is off.
This was possible with my 2.3.7. But with newer devices seems impossible. I am digging up some old vulkano posts incase somebody figured this out.
Thank you very much.

[Q] What's the most stable Froyo ROM?

I currently have 'VEGAn-TAB ROM BETA 5.1 FINAL' installed as of yesterday and it's already crashed while I was watching a video. I know Gingerbread doesn't have video acceleration so I would like to avoid that if possible.
They're all pretty darn stable. And they're all listed at my site.

It may not be the rom that caused this...what video player was being used? what file format was the video in? when did you select if you were given the option of hard coding or soft coding? Where there are plethora of apps running in the background? What exactly was the "crash, forced reboot, lock up, video/audio distortion? Did the video file play properly on another device, ie your computer?
There are many players out there, some work well, some work kinda "eh." Some can't handle some video formats, some can play them, but not properly. Some vieo formats require decoding, hard or soft (I like hard when speaking of ice cream, but software decoding ususally works for my videos).
I'm using BC (the 1.2 version of VEGAn 5.1.1), and rockplayer to play video. I've been thinking of trying moboplayer, since it seems to have received rave reviews on this and other forums. I've been able to play .avi files with software decoding. MP4 files play fine, but the quality isn't as good..they're made for mobile devices with really tiny screens.
When I rip or download a movie, I almost ALWAYS make sure that it runs fine on my Acer netbook (same screen size) to get a general idea of what I can expect on the G-Tab.
in a nutshell, your issue may not be the rom at all...VEGAn 5.1.1 is probably one of, if not THEE most stable 1.1 based rom out there.

[Resolved][Q]About that little thing called hardware video acceleration.

I understand due to the lack of driver source code that Hardware acceleration will not work on our tabs past 2.2(froyo). But I am currently running Calkulin+Clemsyn 1.5ghz Froyo Combo VERSION 6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1024120 and I have tried at least 20 diff videos and diff formats using hardware codec and not one video played. I know you can use apps to play videos with software codecs but when you start going into 720p and 1080p videos the video slows way down. So is there something I'm missing? I thought the tegra 2 could handle 1080p decoding? If there is another ROM that can do HD decoding better please let me know cause video playback is what I use my tab the most for. Thanks for any help and sorry for the wall of txt lol.
Will punch the thanks button!!!
Edit: Ok after several trial and error's on trying pershoot's kernel I decided to go ahead and re-encode my videos using Freemake video converter. It works and the quality actually looks better! This program is free and it has Android presets for our tablets so that you get the best video quality at our resolution! Now I would still like to use pershoot's kernal but I can't find any froyo roms that has his/her's kernel already packed into the rom. If some one could please help me with finding one that would be super! Thanks soooo much!!!

Hmmm....well I guess I'm gonna have to choose between video acceleration or a stable ROM? :/ lol is there a custom rom with hardware acceleration? Thanks so much for the answer
I used Calkulin's ROM along with whatever current kernel Pershoot had and I never had any issues with and HD videos. You might want to give one of Pershoot's kernels a shot.

Why not re-encode to a lower resolution? The GTab can't even play 720p without resizing, which is what's killing you.
1024x600 - that's the screen size. Re-encode your HD video to be under that. It will play like butter. And be considerably smaller.

Why would they say you can play up to 1080p video, if you really cant? lol Also does it matter if its 600x1024 or 1024x600? The reason I ask is because I see it different all the time lol And one more thing, What program would you suggest to re-encode? Thanks so much for everything!
Edit: Ok so I tried pershoot's newest kernel out and I love it! I get some video acceleration back and it also fixed some sound issues I was having. The only problem is that after I install the kernel it boot's up fine but if I reboot, it gets stuck in a boot loop. If I do a factory reset it will boot back up again. but if I reboot then it gets stuck in a boot loop again. So with that said I don't think this kernel is meant for this ROM. What is the best froyo ROM that includes pershoot's kernel? Thanks for everything!!!!

[HELP] me about playing HD Videos..

I need to play HD videos on my gTab. I have Vegan Tab gingeredition 2.3.5. I installed Kensed Player or something like that, it opened .mkv video but there was a lot of lag.
Can I play HD videos on 2.3.5 without lag?

Try VEGenTAB 7.1, It is the ROM that allows me to play H.264 stream smoothly. Seems like the gingerbread ROMs are better on video playback IMO. Btw OC to 1.5 will be fine. Good luck.

thanks for advice.
can you give me link of vegentab 7.1? and give me advise about kernel, which kernel is best?
I'm not sure if this will help, but you could try Summer Player. They keep changing the name of it but the version I have that is most stable is called best video player aka summer player. Its free.
This gave me the best video playback on my G2 running gingerbread. so maybe it will work for you.
Also plays 5.1 audio correctly.
update: I installed it on the Flashback 10.0 alpha rom (Honeycomb 3.1) annnnd it starts to play video then goes back to the file selection menu.

Here you go.
http://vegantab.gojimi.com/
You can use Pershoot's (1.4) or Clemsyn's OC (1.6) kernel for gingerbread.
Pershoot's 1.4 use as is.
Clemsyn's 1.6 you should undervolt it by .50mv for all speed above 1Ghz.
Use setcpu to manage the OC.
Good luck.

miui bases ROMS - video problems

Started having HD video problems with all miui based ROMS, Galnet, standard miui and wiui, videos either start playing and crash, dont play at all or just get a black screen. My recorded video from cam is also choppy. To check it wasnt my phone I loaded the latest chkrom, video played ok.
Want to stay with miui as anything I put on after miui just seems so clunky, anyone else finding this.
Mine does a similar thing although im not on a custom rom, ages ago my phone stopped playing .mkv's and now just recently it wont play certain .avi files or any .flac files at all however it still plays .mp4 fine
Im waiting for the proper ICS release to do a complete wipe and hope they work again.

you on stock rooted sammy rom then?
Ask on the Miui forums ?
Been using Galnet Miui for several months, have never had a problem playing videos of any format with either the native video player or MX. Same with test videos I've taken myself.

cant post on either forum, havent bothered to find out why to be honest as there isnt really much in there in the way of help like on there.
Can you tell me exactly what version you are on now, mine was ok on earlier versions. Everything played smoothly on stock video, mx player and dice, now nothing plays well and sometimes not at all.
Right now I'm using the newest MIUI weekly 2.2.17. The only player that seems to work with all kind of movie files is DicePlayer. All other are causing crashing and other strange issues (specially with HW mode). It should work ok for you as well tbh.
And you know this without even asking there ? Stunning piece of logic there champ
I've used 1.11.9, 2.11.26, 2.1.20 & 2.2.1 with different builds of Siyah and have never had a problem playing any video in any of the common formats on either MX or Galnet Video, nor have I had problems playing back test videos (short. I'm not about to make a 2 hr test video purely to see if it crashes a video player) I've recorded.

will give it a try, on a side note have you even been able to install the reboot options on a standard miui rom that you get with galnet?, tried a couple of times with no joy
i am using ndt miui, so far i didnt see any problem. maybe you can try to update the new one or another miui roms from others developer.
much better with DICE, mx still no longer works though and it was great before, smoother than DICE, not sure whats happend.
