Issue with TB - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys.
I am rep for VZW. I am having a strange issue with a customer TB. I have called HTC and VZW tech support. The customers phone is going into hboot on its own. I have not been able to replicate the problem but the customer has been through 2 and is having the same issue. I can not figure out how he can get to hboot without powering down and rebooting into it. Any ideas would be awesome.
Zack

He is holding the volume down when he is powering it up!

No from what he is saying he can make a call. The phone gets stuck then reboots to hboot. I have installed custom roms and clockworks on multiple phones so I know what he isnt doing lol. I just cant figure out what he is doing to cause the problem. I do not think it is hardware though. I dont know. I have been stumped by this one.

Could be an app not playing nice. My wife has one on her tb that causes a reboot from time to time. She just won't remove them one by one to find it. But she's not rooted. Fast boot does some weird stuff too. I would still look at an app that may not work well with the tb. Some of them I use to use just don't seem to work right on my tb.

TB just shut off?

Anyone having an issue with their TB shutting off or reboting? Mine in the middle of a youtube video. My wife had her's reboot when it was just sitting there. No new apps, task killer, nothing. Is it just buggy cuz it's new?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Mine never did this. My phone did freeze two and all haptic feedback was gone but I pulled the battery and changed the rom. Never had a problem after that.

We are running stock.

ive never had that happen, but i have had the screen trip out, like its spasing and u cnt use it at all, gotta put it to sleep then unlock it and it works fine again..
is it stock? no root and/or roms?
yes I had those same problems, so I was still within the 14 days return poilcy and I took mine back. So get this I had this superman who didnt wanna exchange my phone. Trying to do a reset telling me that android phone reset at times by them selves. I told him that I already spoke to Verizon and they said I could exchange my phone no questions asked and I wasnt leaving till he did so. So take off ur superman custome and exchange my Phone.
Mine did this when I was running unrooted on stock firmware . No problems since rooting and using other roms though.

Shut-off, reboot then Shut-off again...
Mine did this last nite/this AM? When I went to power on it got to the Thunderbolt splash and shut down again...had to plug it in even thought the bateery was at 87%!
Think I will go try the Root and custom ROM route..
Yeah I'm thinking buggy software. Guess I'll wait and see if it does it again.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
I've had it happen a couple times in the last few days.
Stock rom, unrooted
One of the times i was around %58 on battery and after the reset it was at %13
I got the extended battery....still had plenty of juice. I am beginning to think the issue is O.S. related. Seems to hang sometimes when I unlock it or start an app. Kinda like it is stalled for a second or so. Watched well over an hour of youtube today and it didn't shut off like last night.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Yeah, just had this problem last night while using Pulse. It didn't fully rebooted, just went to the white HTC screen and back..... No Thunderbolt booting animation... First time ever. Pulse has crashed on me a couple times too, so I'm gonna blame it for now.

LOL you tell em!
I say we yell a verizon! Make em get rid of the security on the device. I have a feeling that may be a part of it. This is the first android htc device I've had do something weird. We have had 8 total in our home and none were ever this quirky.

Mine rebooted twice this morning after installing the new Google Maps update. I powered it down for a few minutes, then restarted, and it's been fine since.
Crap! I forgot about that update! That may be it. I did that update just the same day. Gotta ask the wife when I get home and see if she updated her's when she had the issue.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Well now having a look at running apps, I see what the issue is. It loads all this crap that your not using! It's in the background waiting. Why? I watched as it pulled up apps that I never opened. This it why verizon reps keep telling people to use a task killer. The os is not being utilized properly at all on this phone.

i H.A.T.E. when they do this. they did the same thing with my Galaxy Tab when i first bought it
I'm having the same issue - phone either turns itself off or reboots itself randomly. I reboot my phone 3-4 times a day swapping out batteries. I'm running stock. Didn't want to have to root, but if people who are rooted and running a custom ROM aren't having this problem, I may have to go that route.
Get system panel from the market and check out all the crap that's sitting in the background. It's a wonder the phone runs at all.

[Q] Does this happen to anyone?

Hey guys,
I'm have a slight problem with my atrix when the touch buttons freeze and don't respond for a while. This used to occur when I was running GingerBlur and I went back to stock by applying SBF. But, The problem is still there and only occurs sometimes. Does anyone have a solution? it's not annoying me but, would like an answer.
Thanks,
This same issue happened to me. Same result, root stock didn't matter. Even after a factory reset it kept happening. Its a hardware issue. I went to AT&T and got a brand new phone. The guy there said he has seen this a few times. I guess motorola knows about it but for now replacement is your only option.
Darn i'm in canada and can't return it to get replaced...
Thanks for replying

I don't think Motorola canada will repair an at&t Atrix 4g. So i'm out of luck. I want to know if anyone else is suffering from this issue?

I have had this happen also. Only a day or so after Gingerblur 3.1 (I think) was it so bad I backed up my apps and sbf flashed.
For me it used to happen only when I was doing a crazy amount of switching between apps, had just jumped out of a game, or was playing angry birds/ >_<
I noticed this A LOT more running Gingerblur 3.1. Ever since Gingerblur 3.1 to 3.5 my Amazon app store will stop functioning after a while. I end up using the Stock Android Recovery to factory reset and use Titantium backup to restore apps.
I have sbf flashed and used Tenfar's CWM recovery, but I don't believe Tenfar's backup or factory reset are quite perfect yet.
I would have to say my usage as subsided as of late, but perhaps the sbf flash of
OLYFR_U4_1.2.6_SIGNED_OLPSATTSPE_P012_HWolympus_1g_1FF.sbf
or
OLYFR_U4_1.5.7_SIGNED_OLPSATTSPE_P012_HWolympus_1g_1FF.sbf
fixed the issues?
Touch freezing or unresponsiveness hasn't been an issue for at least a couple weeks. My friend is running stock 1.8.3. I'll check with him if hes been having any freezing.
Seriously dude try it.. And be humble. I gave them a bricked atrix with a nexus boot animation and custom animations. I was very humble and thanked them alot and they sent it back in 3 days! Purolator dropped it off and that was that

Screen wont turn back on

Something is making my photons screen unable to turn back on without a battery pull. Anyone else having this issue? It has happened three times in less than 24 hours.

I also keep having a feeling it has something to do with the pocket detection mode. Just happened again a few minutes ago. I'm gonna leave pocket detection off and report back tomorrow or until it happens again.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
I've had that problem too, I can see the backlight turn on but the screen stays black. I wrote it off as a bug. It only did it once every few days, and yes I did have pocket detection enabled.
Yeah it seems like a badass feature but if it is causing a bug that annoying ill have to leave it off :/

Did it again with pocket detection off. Factory reset? Or did I get a dud phone?

Factory reset did not fix my issue.
Still happening no matter if pocket detection on or off.
Happen to me once every 2-3 days.
So its probably a software issue bc the button does work. Wonder if this is occurring on alien or homebase

Screen of death didn't hold up to the ghetto mod, updated to the 198_6 sbf, crossing my fingers it will cut down on this issue
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
I'm on homebase and haven't had this issue. But I also didn't have it on the stock photon either? Perhaps it's like the OTA update failing for some and not others. I remember reading some people on stock failing and some being able to do it. So I'm not totally sure......But that's something to ponder on.

DWake014 ,
Did you get this phone recently?
This is a known issue with some phones that went out with a corrupt firmware from Motorola. There is no patch that can fix the firmware from Sprint as of now. I needed to return mine for an exchange. Sprint explained that when it gets to the area on the firmware that is corrupt, as a safety mode it basically freezes the phone and cut the power. That's why it takes a battery pull to restart the phone. There was a large batch released with this bug. I have gone through 4 Photons to get my current one with no freezing issues. I would suggest not going to the same store if possible so you get a different lot # on the replacement phone. Good luck and get that exchanged asap. Peace
My biggest concern is that I got it off of ebay... I know I can bs them and go around the question likes it none of their business but do you think they will hassle me?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
If you have an account and a phone with issues they should replace it. As long as you take it to a tech center. That MAY work.
Sent from my Photon via XDA
Yeah its still a sprint sold phone and I have the protection plan on my account. Shouldn't be too many questions asked. Btw put the leaked sbf on last night and it has been going without any screen of death. I have been shaking it around and putting it down in its front and back and it hasn't done anything. Will keep this updated if it happens again
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
If you have the plan you should be fine. I got my Evo from Radio Shack and Sprint covered it. As for the SBF. I haven't flashed the new one. So not sure about it. But I haven't had the sleep of death issue either.
Sent from my Photon via XDA
You are probably fine then, about 4 hours and counting so far off the charger, longest time yet
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
I'm glad to hear it's working for you. But yeah, Sprint should take the phone in and replace it as long as it's a software issue, and they don't see you're rooted. which most techs don't care anymore anyway. And you have the insurance. Just make sure it's a repair center.

I thought it was related to root but I've had these hot reboots even before rooting so it's not just root. Most likely an app.

Will take a while to hunt down the app but anybody else have 'LinkedIn' app installed? It just hot rebooted while launching that app from a fresh restart - quickest hot reboot I've ever seen.
It might not be that app but then I went to the Play Store page and there are tons of 1 star reviews because the last update failed on people's phones - more interestingly the most recent comment is from a GS2 user who says latest update reboots his phone.
I've uninstalled it and I doubt I can be that lucky that it's that app and I find it so quickly but crossing my fingers.
Mine rebooted after I opened the Navigation app.

Mine happened again. I've now uninstalled BetterBatteryStats. I'm going to start uninstalling stuff that uses root to roll that out. I've had these issues on stock but it happened rarely, lately it's been happening very frequently so something is going on.

Well I'm tired of the random hot reboots! Some people say it happened to them before rooting, but I don't believe it happened to me until I rooted and installed CWM touch......so I'm going back to stock to start all over again so I can try to narrow down the issue. I'll report back on my progress as it becomes available.

Happening often to me. The search continues. I've now uninstalled adfree. I'm positive this is an app since I had it occur on stock after two weeks of using the phone and installing crap.

I had the same problem on my previous Captivate and am having it now on the GS III; no rhyme or reason to the reboots that I can see.
I still have heat problem but I played w/ different settings to see what it is.... I had att s3 which got really really hot... So returned it for Verizon s3. Verizon is better but learned that the data (lte/s3) makes it really hot and battery drain. Also the screen, of course.
If you're rooted then go get Phone info and disable lte. I tried CDMA auto for Verizon and it got much better... But at lowered download speed. I change it when I speed the speed... Doesn't require reboot so it's easy to change.
U can also under clock using setCPU.
I don't need it to be fast normally except when playing games... So just have it at 384min and 1024max... I find this helps allot w/ heat as well... U can try and find your setting that's acceptable speed and heat.
Just sharing my experience here.... So good luck.

Happens here too with the T-Mobile GS3. I think they rushed their fabrication process to deliver a high volume and fubared a few hardwarewise. I've even had it lockup/freeze once when not even in the OS but just in the recovery menu's. But yeah, the usual is a totally random unpredictable hot reboot throwing out my resident programs, homescreen, ect. Starts with the screen being frozen and not accepting input, then a short vibration, then back to homescreen reloading and all regular apps and widges that are supposed to run at boot load again. It's as if there's a micro static short or something. Anyway, I'm sick of problem solving and looking through logcats. Going back in for warranty. This is a dream phone except for this ultra annoying bug that it seems not many people have.

Happened to me once or twice (that I noticed) in the two weeks before I rooted (stock UCALEM), and a few more times after. It's just TouchPiz being pizzy. Maybe someone can catch the logcat, but there's nothing we can do about it (except install a better ROM )
How would anyone be able to diagnose this BS
"OK. My phone is hot. And it randomly reboots".
"Crap - u r out of luck buddy. Go change ur damn phone".
Provide ur phone model, ROM version, apps installed. Check ur battery stats.
As a solution - flash any custom ROM which removes bloatware.

Anyone have issues with ics ota?

So my girlfriend is still on her Tbolt. She's never wanted me to root it or anything so still stock. Anyway since the ics update the phone has become next to useless. She was complaining about it being slow, laggy etc. I thought she was exaggerating but after messing with it myself ya its really bad. Super slow to do anything and backup media force closes every few minutes.
Just curious if this is an isolated incident or if others have similar issues? I told her to try a factory reset but she doesn't want to do that yet.

My girlfriends phone apparently didn't take well to the update either. Hers never got FC's, but it froze a lot... especially on the lock screen. After a while, the screen started wigging out... it started scrolling around on its own and even made screen selections on its own.
Good thing I have a reliable source here that warned me about the ICS Goblins that come with the OTA and harass the user of the phone. I sent her phone in for an insurance claim and got her a new one and no more ICS Goblins harass her.
Disconnecktie, if you see this, thanks again!
