[Q] Titanium Backup from TW to AOSP - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So last night, I felt a bit adventurous and flashed CM7. I had my Titanium backups done so I restored my apps back but none of the backups would restore its user settings, like how it did for TW-based roms. For example, my LancherPro does not have the paid status, my XDA app needs my ID/PW put in again, Whatsapp needs to reconnect with my contacts, etc etc. I went back to EC01 rom and restored everything back without any issues. Is there an explanation as to why the user/password/key settings aren't getting restored in AOSP/CM roms? I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

[Q] Titanium Backup, Proper Restore Method?

I have looked around and still haven't found a concrete answer to this.
What is the best way to backup and restore with Titanium Backup?
Usually, before i flash new ROMs, I will delete all backups, and then rebackup everything.
Then when I actually flash to a new one, I will restore "all missing apps + data"
Is this the best way to do things?
The reason I ask is because of some glitches I have ran into with some ROMs, specifically Axura.
I love the ROM, but whenever i restore after flashing it, the lockscreen will stay on after receiving a text message, until i turn it off manually. This is very bad for the battery if i go for a while not noticing a msg.
Any ideas?
After so many flashes its good to flash to back stock through odin. You also need to make sure to check repartition box in odin to make sure there are no skeletons in your closet. Also when restoring apps and data, only do data when going from a 2.1 rom to 2.1. Ive reaf people having problems reinstalling data from 2.1 to 2.2.
Fear the beard...
Another thing I do now that im flashing strictly 2.2 is only restore missing apps and essential system data such as email, accounts and sync settings, wifi settings, and messaging if I want to preserve my texts. Others that might be handy are phone settings and wallpaper settings this last will restore wallpaper and fonts and some other user settings. I have contacts set to sync with gmail. Im sure there's one or two I've forgotten but you get the gist of it.

I ONLY backup & user apps+data. then I use mybackup pro to back up + restore texts, call logs, bookmarks, system settings. Haven't run into any issues doing this.

Disturkis4u,
when you do this
are you flashing from 2.1 to 2.2
or
2.1 to 2.1 or 2.2 to 2.2?
I've done it for both.

i backup user apps and data before every flash. sometimes i batch delete previous backups if there are apps i no longer want/need just to clean things up so i can just run the install user apps+data without going through the list and deselecting ones i no longer want. i've also backed up accounts, wifi access points, and a couple other of the green options in system data. i've never had a problem after restoring.
Does Titanium backup restore game saves or any progress you made?

[Q] Messy restore - Mybackup Root problem?

I've always used MyBackup Root to backup and restore my apps when going from ROM to ROM and never had a problem. Recently I backed up my apps (NOTE: I NEVER backup system apps, just user/third-party apps and the only system data I back up is calendar data) in a 2.2 ROM (Trigger) in order to flash a 2.2.1 one (Bi-Winning) without issues. I flashed the new ROM and proceeded to restore the apps using MyBackup, again with virtually no problems, everything went smoothly and the market apps had their links restored, etc.
However when I started using my apps, most of them had weird problems. Some were force closing, others had missing data or no data at all, and some were simply broken. I instantly lost track of what worked and what didn't. I assumed this was caused by a bad flash so I re-downloaded the ROM and flashed it again making sure I followed all the instructions to the letter. Then I restored everything again and all of my apps were behaving the same way. This isn't the case if I delete then reinstall an app using Market or another source that is not MyBackup.
After freaking out/****ting bricks/etc, I started looking for ways to deal with the problem. This is what I've done so far:
- Used a 1-week old MyBackup folder that had worked before when I went from Bionix to Trigger. (Failed: Similar, if not the same, results)
- Flashed Trigger again and both folders failed.
- Flashed a different ROM (phiremod) and tried both folders. Fail again.
I'm about to delete my folders, start from scratch with no app data, and use Titanium Backup from now on. Has anyone had similar problems?
Just thought I'd give an update since this has gotten over 90 views.
I started from scratch ever since and have been using Titanium Backup Pro. I've switched to many 2.2.1 and 2.2 ROMs so far without issues and all of the restores have been flawless.

Titanium Backup - why not restore data?

I have read that when going to a different rom to do a full wipe.
So clearly if you want to keep your apps you back them up and recover them with titanium backup, but why is it advised to not restore the Data of the apps?
How else would I keep game scores and settings and such?
Thanks
restoring the data for the user apps is fine, don't restore the system data...

that would be a bit of misinformation that gets spread around.....
its fine to restore user apps+data. i have been doing it for a long time with every device i have. swapping between devices and all.
do a batch restore MISSING apps+data
unselect anything that might be blur/sense/touchwiz specific (based on the phone you are using)
run the batch and reboot
verify you are not having any FCs on your apps
if you do a batch restore of just user apps+data (and not the MISSING option) you will get tons of issues.
it is not advised to use Titanium Backup for things like text messages, contacts, phone logs, etc. (while possible it will work just fine, i have seen lots more issues trying to restore those from rom to rom rather than just user apps.)
again. use the MISSING APPS option in the batch restore of Titanium Backup
i have been doing it for over a year on many different devices and i even share my titanium backup folder between different phones, with NO issues at all. and i typically flash several times a week on several different devices.

It is advised to do full wipe, if you install a rom.
And if you want to keep your settings, games scores etc, you use Titanium Backup.
Titanium Backup is your friend in those cases..
What is not adviced, is installing a Rom, without wiping your data.. In that way, you keep for example data of apps and games, of a froyo rom, to a gingerbread rom..
Rom to Rom differs(even in same android version), thats why you full wipe, and then TiBu saves you by restoring them, to the new rom's enviroment..
Edit: Agree with others.. I was typing on atrix, and since i wrote this, they already answered!
Also in atrix, NEVER restore FINGERPRINTS backup..

That explains it. Ive seen MANY posts where users tell other users to restore apps but not restore data but dont specify they mean system data and not app data!
Also, when people talk of a full wipe, do they mean even deleting the contents of the internal storage (like photos and such?)
This would be for going from one ROM to another ROM, both GB
No they are talking about doing a "wipe data/factory reset" in CMW and not physically deleting your internal sdcard. if you delete your sdcard then you will wipe out data that you need including your titanium backups

Thanks ! I always feared that the wipe data/factory reset pretty much deletes all the files on your device like photos and music
The short answer is force closes. Which also can happen from restoring app data, altho it is less likely to happen, it can and it will. But yea def dont restore system data.
Is there any other way of saving game saves?

You can use SyncIt or GameOn, you can even back it up manualy with Root Explorer. You should be fine with TiBU, just if you do get a force close you will know why and what to do (delete data and/or uninstall/reinstall).
I am having an issue restoring my app data from titanium backup. The issue first occurred when i switched from a stock ROM to CM7 ICS ROM. When i restored my missing apps+data all of my app data had disappeared. I just started over and didn't worry about it. Then when i switched from CM7 back to a stock rom I received my old apps+data from before i switched to CM7. I read around on the forums that this might be a compatibility issue. So i started to use the setting in the batch menu "Manipulate data and converted my backups to roll back journal mode which says this works with all roms, and started uploading to Dropbox. I recently just switched my Rom from a stock ROM to CM9 ICS. I lost all of my apps again!! and got back all of the app data from when i was using CM7. Could someone please shed some light on what is going on here cause i have no idea. Please let me know if there is anything i can do to get my app data into CM9 from my last stock rom. The stock rom i was using was an old ROM called wet dream.

The stock rom uses a different back up location than cm roms. You will have to manually go find the data backups in tibu. Don't bother having it auto detect, wont work. For example, all my backups were at mnt/emmc/titaniumbackup instead of the stock roms location of mnt/sdcard/titaniumbackup

Looks like that was the the problem. I saved my backup on drop box so i just dropped what was on dropbox in my titanium folder and restored it. I now have all of my app data back.

[Q] Restoring app data not working - my backup root

I used My Backup Root to back up my apps/data when I switched from stock to SHOstock and it worked great. Yesterday I decided I wanted to try out XWLI1 with JKay because I've heard great things about the combo, so I backed up all my apps/data with My Backup Root and then I flashed CleanRom. I then went into My Backup Root and told it to restore my apps and data, it said it worked and I rebooted my phone. But when I rebooted, none of my apps had their data... I tried it a couple times, and it never seemed to work. I ended up just nandroiding back to SHOstock, but I was thinking of trying it again today...
Is there something fundamentally different about the 2 ROMs that would keep me from restoring app data? Or is there something else I might be overlooking? Any help would be great...

Your method of restoration after a ROM flash...

I'm a flashaholic like most of us here. I'd like to know your methods/steps/tricks for restoring accounts/settings/ringtones/apps/data configs ect after a new ROM flash.
Apps Restoration:
-Titanium Backup with user/data restoration would make the ROM unstable. Lots of freezes and Reboots. Some applications were just unusable which forced a painful 'level-down-the-problem' process or simply getting pissed and trying another ROM(which i falsely blamed the problems on the ROM). I know every ROM instructions say not to do this....but this method would be ideal if it worked.
-Titanium Backup with just user-apps restore(no data) was MUCH better yet I still had a few freezes and reboots. So I still haven't found a truly clean ROM with apps-restored from backup.
-No Backup restore, I simply downloaded all the apps and this is the CLEANEST method I've found so far. This is great and all but when you have 200 apps the download process is soooooo long. Plus I have to reconfigure everything. To get a working phone with this method feels like it takes a solid 3 days.
Settings
-This has to be the most painful part. Re-configuring your launcher, widgets, settings, accounts, ringtones, alarms ect.
So what is your routine? What quick and safe/clean methods do you use to restore your phone after a new ROM flash? Do you use tasker for any of this(if so please share your examples/templates)? Any other apps you use for restore like apptozip or maybe you compile your own recovery zip?

-i always use and always recommend Helium over ANY other restore app.
-i use it to restore all user apps except for g+/fb which i download from the market
-never never never restore anything to do with system even if you are using the same rom.
-launcher settings are auto there when restored from helium *i do keep a backup in launcher settings though just in case*
-settings are the only thing that need to be done from scratch which i dont mind as i get to look through the settings of the new rom to see changes ect..
-if you use a rom that uses hybrid settings from pa, always keep a backup of those settings via hybrid settings to restore after rom flash
hopefully this helps
