Possible new way to root by Chainfire - Xperia Play Android Development

Chainfire released a new root tool that uses an exploit in Gingerbread called "Gingerbreak". This might be an easier way to root the Play/Arc/Neo/Pro and it might also work on phones with locked bootloaders.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765

Confirmed working
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045204

could anyone confirm it working on the Play? honestly i got so many important applications and data and i dont want to lose them
regards

I ran Gingerbreak on Xperia Play.
Superuser installed but showing nothing in apps.
Installed titanium backup but not showing in app list.
I guess it didn't work.
Any ideas?

works great for me, maybe a reboot is required ?

Can anyone confirm weather running Gingerbreak will wipe the sd?
I ran it on a blank sd because I don't want to try with my primary sd.

this simple way of rooting works great for me, and I am a total newbie. All apps are there and i was able to remove some apps finally that came with the xperia like the chinese keyboard

Sd card will not be formatted

Titanium won't work on my play.
I purchased pro for my hero, and i can install, but the application is just not available in the app draw.
'My backup root' installs and works fine but i just can't find how to remove the bloatware with it.
I do have root access so what can i use to get rid of what's app, postcard etc ??

gingerbreak v1.2 works great doesnt wipe anything its just a simple .apk to install
edit: yea so none of the gingerbreaks are working for me anymore it keeps getting stuck at running exploit this may take a few minutes, left it for 2 hours and still nothing this getting old fast im going back to my X10 for now till something is out there guaranteed to work everytime peace

Didn't work on my xperia play.
Installed it to phone, formatted my sd card and when i run gingerbreak it get's stuck on running exploit with my sd card unmounted.
In another thread someone said that if you go to storage and manually mount the sd card it will reboot and work.
But.......this again did not work for me.
Going to try the manual root.

Ive used this one mine one thing I noticed, it runs for about 20 seconds and unmounts the SD card and seems to do nothing for up to 10 minutes but seriously leave it and have a brew come back and it will be done.

You can use a root file explorer and just delete the .apk's you dont want from /system/app/ or try an app called "system app remover" (or somthing like that) its free in the market

worked fine for a uk PLAY. was purchased in a carphone warehouse store. and as far as im aware its bootloader was locked. installed it, ran it, done, boom

i wonder if after rooting via gingerbreak it's still possible to obtain any update from sony Ericsson and install it ?
Can someone confirm This plzzzz

Gingerbreak not working on teh vzw Xperia Play 2.3.2 (r800x) sadly.

cant seem to root waiting for about 30 min still on runing exploit, im using android 2.3.3

It doesn't work on the 2.3.3 build as of yet only on 2.3.2...

Possible work-around for 2.3.3 (locked bootloader)
Since this posted in the Arc sections has been confirmed working on Arc's with a LOCKED bootloader, those who want may give it a try.
DO NOT DO THIS if your bootloader have been unlocked, it will brick your device!!!
1. Use flashtool to downgrade to the .181 generic firmware
2. Root the device using GingerBreak1.2
3. Update to .145 (2.3.3) using FOTA
root should/may be retained. That is at least as it seems on the Arc.
Again:

Market fix for X10a/X10i R2BA026

Here's the Market fix for ROOTED X10a and X10i with R2BA026. This will ONLY work on R2BA026! If you try it on any other firmware, you WILL get a yellow exclamation mark!
I made this because people are having trouble with the fix for 024 to 026 update. This one uses the R2BA020 fingerprint from Rogers-branded (Canadian) firmware.

Standalone Toggle Secure Shell script (run this if ADB won't let you mount /system directory)
ToggleSecureShell_X10.rar (Megaupload)
You must have PC Companion or Sony Ericsson Update Service installed, and you must have USB debugging enabled on your phone. There is NO NEED for Java or Device ID.
Run MarketFix_R2BA026_X10a.cmd or MarketFix_R2BA026_X10i.cmd to use it.
It keeps a backup of your original build.prop and default.prop files on your SD card. I've made an undo script, but I'm not sure if it works (Can you run adb after you get a yellow exclamation mark? I think you can, but I'm not 100% sure).
Please wait up to 24 hours for it to work.
If you still can't get it to work: I had to do this when NONE of the Market fixes were working. I reflashed my phone (a factory reset may work too), and then used Titanium Backup to restore my apps. I didn't restore my phone settings and region settings, but set them up manually instead. I installed the Market fix and it finally worked! Apparently, something in my backup screwed up my Market access.
Edit: Added X10i Market fix courtesy of MarylandCookie. The only difference is that I combined it with my script.
Noticed after a week of running 026 without issues (or so I thought), my paid market apps weren't showing up. I hadn't noticed before because the apps got re-installed when I restored my backup after upgrading my firmware.
Anywho, someone pointed me to this thread when I reported my market issue, and your process worked perfectly. Only took a couple of hours for the market to update for me.
Thanks!

Absolutely fantastic - I have F3 v3'd my X10 so now on R2BA026 and couldn't get my apps that I'd bought (ultimatejuice mainly) and some of the others I had like MyPlayer wouldn't work either - I tried the previous market fix and got the bricked Yellow ! on my phone so had to reflash. Found this - works PERFECTLY. Only took 30 mins for my apps to reappear, don't know if this was helped along by appbrain as when I searched market, UJ wasn't there but then I searched appbrain and there it was - MyPlayer was similar, searched appbrain and it wasn't there, so searched market and it appeared.
BRILLIANT fix. Thank you guys so much.
Just applied the patch now. Will update when I get access to apps.

Marketfix for 026 x10a
Hey guys, I went through the marketfix procedure and it's been almost 48hrs now and I'm still seeing no difference with apps on the market. Anyone else here with an x10a experiencing similar problems? Any suggestions outside of re-rooting and trying again? I don't mind waiting for the next upgrade, but obviously, if I can fix this now, then that would be better.
Thanks for your help..
Is this for rooted or un-rooted devices.
I've updated to R2BA026, Unrooted, but certain items are missing off the market. Myplayer being an example!
myplayer is also an example I have, but I'm talking about a 026 rooted x10a.

You could try this (it'll erase your stuff though):
1. Back up your apps, contacts, SMS, etc.
2. Factory reset (Settings > SD card & phone storage > Factory data reset).
3. Turn on USB debugging.
4. Install Market fix.
5. Test Market.
6. Restore apps, etc. DON'T restore saved region and phone settings.

It's for ROOTED phones only. Protected apps are missing if the fingerprint for the new firmware hasn't been approved by the Market yet. This fix basically spoofs the fingerprint to an older, approved one.
hi guys,i'm from brazil.I would like to now if is possible access the market doing this process.I've rooted my xperia x10a with RB...026 2 times, and i've installed the market fix too,but it seems to doesn't work.Could any one tell me something
Fantastic. 3 Hours and I'm seeing ALL apps
3G has sped up quite a bit as well. It was going at about 10kB/s ever since I applied the fix and as soon as the apps started showing in the market it's jumped up to 110kB/s.
Perhaps it was just (another) coincidence, but all my market downloads were stalling at "Starting download" and they started as soon as I switched on Google Talk. At the same time, the missing apps showed up in the market.
Ah well, I'm just glad everything is working smoothly

guiguisk8, can you supply more details? Which way do you root it? If you used exploid, did you keep your branded (Brazil) firmware, or did you flash with Generic X10a? Also, how long has it been since you applied the Market fix? Sometimes it takes a few hours.
hi grospolina,i used the new exploit that uses a cmd file where you type commands.I've installed the busybox(what is his function?) and the marketfix. The firmware is generic, by the way
another 2 questions: is possible install games like hero of sparta? And when the phone is rooted, appear a cmd prontop file on the prone?

[Q] Help needed to upgrade from 1.6

Hi,
I have a problem with upgrading and wondered if anyone could help, please. I have searched the forum and couldn't find an exact answer to my problem.
In November my wife broke the usb on her X10i and hasn't been able to upgrade to 2.1 because of Sony's lack of OTA updates.
Is it possible to root and flash 2.1 on the X10i using the SDcard only instead of connecting the phone to the PC through usb?
What is the best way to root and the best 2.1 rom to use when flashing a pay monthly O2 X10?
Thanks for any help in advance.
The model is an X10i
Firmware 1.6 (obviously)
baseband 1.0.16
Kernel 1.6.29
Build R1FA016
1. Search & download Z4 root to your sd card (use google, can't miss it)
2. Download BUSYBOX from the market
3. Follow the instructions on this link to install XRECOVERY:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571
After these your phone should be ready to be flashed, it's just a matter of what you want to flash it to.
Hope these help.
Thank you, I'll try your suggestions.
A standard 2.1 rom that works on an O2 x10i is fine to flash to, doesn't have to be customised or fancy. Any suggestions on the best and most stable rom to go for?
Cheers.
I think you will be fine with the Generic 2.0.2.A.0.24 build. (Thought I had the link to the zip file but I must have deleted it, I used the flashtool exclusively for 2.1 and I used xrecovery when I started to use froyo.) I've only had my x10 for a little over 2 months, flashed it to 2.1 after a few days of getting it then I switched to 2.2 betas since the new year but I was happy with that 2.1 version the short time I had it.
Thank you very much
A couple more annoying newbie question though.
I rooted the phone but couldnt install busybox from the market, does Z4 root install it when it roots the phone?
I can't move the three xrecovery files from my sdcard into the system/bin folder on the phone. Do I need to install Root Explorer from the Market to access and write the 3 files onto the phone system folder?
Thanks.

No problem I have a few things I still need to learn myself so no worries.
First, when you run z4 root does it say that its rooted?
Did you get an error when installing busybox or are you saying you can't find it in the market?
No, z4 doesn't install busybox.
Yes, you'll need to install root explorer before you can push any file to the system/bin folder/ on the phone.
Z4root worked, i chose permanant root, when I try to install busybox I get the message
Your Phone is rooted.
Busybox was not found.
The app failed either because your device is not nand unlocked or we were unable to remount.
I installed Titanium backup to check the phone is rooted and it says it could not require root priviliges either.

Sounds like z4 root didn't work since 2 different apps does not see your phone as being rooted. Uninstall z4 then search and download for Universal Androot 1.6, that's the other root app I've used in the past.
Thanks.
Phone rooted, busybox and root explorer installed.
Xrecovery files moved.
Can't get into the xrecovery menu at startup
My rooted Orange San Francisco is looking like a good buy now. I'll give up on messing with the phone. Thanks for all your help and time, my wife gets a new phone in year and it will probably take me that long to get it working and for SE to release 2.2

hi there, dont give up now, you are getting so close!
you dont really need to use xrecovery menu at all. the idea for you would be the following:
1. root the 1.6 phone - done
2. install titanium backup/my backup pro and backup your data - done (i think)
3. download the 2.1 flashtool from the following thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683793 (choose the appropriate ROM - if unsure ask questions! i would recommend the latest X10a_2_1_A_0_435_GLOBAL)
4. run the flash tool and update phone to 2.1
5. reroot phone with z4root and reinstall backup software
6. recover all backups and you are now done!
i should clarify also.....the reason i have recommended you NOT to use the xRecovery menu is fairly simple. If you are not planning on constantly flashing new ROMs and booting into other ROMS, then its simply not necessary for you.
The benefits of xRec are that you can take a complete backup of your phone, flash it with something else and then recover the backup when you are done. Its a simple way to flash new roms quickly, but as i said, not really necessary for you.
Flashtool is very easy to use, all the instructions are provided on the screen, and it is done in 5 minutes also, there are lots and lots of tutorials posted around the place too.
good luck!

You are on point MRTIM, I can't argue with what you said. But like he mentioned on his first post, his wife broke the USB on the phone that's why he is doing it the long way.
@Scribbling Are you pressing the back button on the phone as soon as you see the white SE screen?
If you are still having trouble there is another way. One thing I failed to mention is the new version of xrecovery 0.3 is an actual APK file. That means you can just download it to your PC, transfer to your SD card, browse to the location on your phone then tap to install it. If you need a browser you can use ASTRO FILE MANAGER from the Market which is free.
PLEASE NOTE AND I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. If you are going to try and reinstall the xrecovery APK package, make sure to uninstall BUSYBOX then pull any xrecovery files that you already pushed to the phone prior to installing the v0.3 APK.
Let us know if you have any other questions. I agree with MRTIM, why stop now? You are almost there.
Thanks.
Broken Usb is the annoying bit
I'll try installing Xrecovery as an apk.
Ugh..... Xrecovery could not be installed to this device. I'll try Xrec 0.2 later, if I can find the will.

[Q] OTA 1.4.2

Hello,
I have a rooted NT on 1.4.1 and this morning it seems the the OTA block did not function because it upgraded to 1.4.2 on it own.
It doens't seem to have affected the root so far, but I haven't explored everthing.
When I click on the NT Hidden settings OTA block i have a message stating :
Missing /system/bin/su
What can I do to block any further ota upgrades. When I rooted I am preety sure that I had made sure that OTA were blocked...
Thanks.
Nathalie
same here
I also looked at my rooted tablet today and it said the 1.4.2 OTA installed.
I had rooted from 1.4.1 using the SD card method.
I had run the OTA blocker but still got 1.4.2
It did not appear to break the root but I had limited time to check things.
Hoping to hear others comments on this issue.
And looking for a OTA block that works.
I tried titanium back-up block at one time but had issues, might just try it again.
This is bummer news. I was hoping I was done with the B&N BS.
install cm7 if you can. It works nice and unlocks the mic

I'm sticking with a rooted 1.4.0 for now. The issue is that I've read the B&N stock apps don't work on CM7. You could download the B&N app from the Market but it doens't have the same functionallity. Some who subscribe to magazines have reported they can't view their subscriptions on the B&N Market app. It seems to be an issue that depends on the magazine as some are OK and some aren't.

None of my magazines are accessible through any B&N Market app (Time, SI, GQ, etc.), but I thought rooting still allows you to access all the vanilla B&N content in addition to Market apps?
EDIT: Whoops, missed the part about CM7. Yes, a different ROM doesn't access the B&N stock apps, as I understand it.
So what should i do because, it seems that i have lost android market, it is asking for a new account. And the email and talk do not work either...
I am kinda lost here because i do not want to brick my NT...
Any suggestions?

The OTA has removed your root access. Which in turn means you can no longer use the packages installed after the root process. Basically refer back to GabrialDestruir's post where he said the 'root card' methods should still work fine. Your best bet IMO is to either install internally, or use an sdcard version of CWM recovery and if you want stock, download and install one of the stock flashable roms in the development section. Else install CM7. Or stay on 1.4.2, your call.

I'm running 1.4.2 and it's all nicely rooted, you just have to used a "Root Card" aka a card which by whatever means adds all sorts of root glory to your device. There are like two or three of these that actually exist for the Nook Tablet, choose one burn the sdcard and follow the instructions and you get a functioning stock root device.

I am trying to get mine to update to 1.4.2, so I can get the fixes from 1.4.1 mainly...and plan to use a root card after the update. But I cannot get mine to update after having done the OTA block. So GabrialDestruir, I initially used Albert Wertz root method using an sd card.
Should I re-root my NT using the same method as it is right now or should I un-root it prior rooting it again.
It's not that clear for me yet how I should proceed.
Thanks.

[Q] Is it worth it to root?

I'm still waiting for my SI number to come up, and I'm starting to get a little impatient. I'm considering going ahead and using flashtool, but if I go to that much trouble, why not just go ahead and root?
Here is the reason for my question: I rooted my x10mp to upgrade to 2.2 since there weren't going to be any more official updates. That gave me some capabilities (like apps2sd) that weren't available on 2.1.
So, what can I gain by rooting my 2011 xmp?

xmp is the one that getting ics not x10mp :silly:
btw to answer your root question. nothing really.
i only root just to use v6supercharger, market enabler to install some apps that cant be installed "this item cannot be installed in your country" (because i live outside US), titanium backup, and link2sd for moving apps/data/cache to sd. thats about it.
My old phone is the x10 minipro. My current phone is the 2011 minipro. Edited my first post for clarity, thanks.

probably not
of course, this depends what you want to do with your phone... imho, if you have not decided to root your device for other reasons then it is not worth to root it for getting ICS: If you use stock ROM + a small amount of other apps and feel happy about it you probably don"t need root. ICS would give you a little icing on that gingerbread
IMO, definitely YES!
Definitely, it's worth!
Just root, no other mods, to just install some useful apps and achieve control over which you bought: your connections (droidwall...), your CPU and battery (cputuner...), backup (titanium...), adblocking (adaway...), autostart (autorun manager...), or just VIEW how is your system made (root explorer...).
I played with all of that stuff on my x10mp, but I don't really play with this phone as much. I forgot about adblock, though. That's a good enough reason to root for me. Thanks!

Well
Well
You will be able to do a lot of things
u can remove unwanted system apps (i use AntTek app manager)
u can modify system files
u can use apps that needs root (like root browser ,market enablers ,etc)
if you find yourself in need to do any of the above
then root
otherwise don't
it doesn't make a lot of difference
specially if you are on ICS
Got my XMP rooted and flashed to ICS. Took me a couple of hours to do it, but part of that time was spent figuring out my antivirus software on the computer. Ran a repair with PCC and lost root, so I had to do it over again, which took me about 45 minutes. Thought I'd try to run a repair on SUS, but I was afraid I'd wipe out root again, so I skipped that step.
Got some root-only apps, reinstalled most of my old apps, did some housecleaning. Everything looks good and it seems to run just fine. Now I just need to do the same for my girlfriend's XMP.
Just a couple of things: I lost my calendar info with the upgrade, though I tried to back up everything. Also, I'm wondering about skipping the repair with SUS or PCC.

If you like to tinker with stuff then go for it.

Is it possible to root LG Realm LS620?

Hi,
I am looking purchase LG Realm LS620 during blackfriday. Is it possible to root this phone? Please help me with links...
THANK YOU!
Yeah I Used Towel Root it worked just fine then make sure to install SuperSU & Busy Box also search some thing in the play store to fix the writing issue to the SD card after you get root heres a link to the apk for towel root https://towelroot.com/tr.apk :good::good::good:
Yeah towel root works fine, idk if theres any custom recover for it tho, been looking since i got it, ive tried using xposed framework, but its not the same as using cm roms
yeah i have yet to find a custom recovery or any development for that matter but im sure hopefully soon someone will do something with this thing.
Towelroot worked perfect! Thanks
Would just like a custom recovery, I as well have not found one.
I have bricked my LG ls620, any chance of asking someone to rip /system/app for me, or perhaps the entire stock firmware?
Writing issue to the SD Card after using Towel Root with LS620?
Thanks for the info. I should be getting an LS620 today. I would like to disable the activation wizard and I understand the way to do this is to:
1) root phone
2) install free version of titanium backup
3) uninstall LGSetupWizard 4.3.019
Regarding the rooting portion, you mention "search some thing in the play store to fix the writing issue to the SD card after you get root" . I am not sure what this means can you let me know what issues are related to writing to the SD card on this device after rooting with Towel root and what application and process is needed to resolve this issue.
Thanks in advance.

Do you have a copy of your stock rom? Or and update zip i can install from the sd card to re write the entire system?
Yes
Towleroot works perfect!
Even unrooted on newer versions of Android you can't write to the external SD in less you root after that es3 will be able to but I'd you want other apps to you need to use
a app such as SDfix: Kitkat writable micro sd, which I used on my LG Realm, hope this helped
Sent from my LGLS620 using XDA Free mobile app
Yes, it is very possible
