Ok im still new with Android. I rooted my att aria. this is my rom version below. Ive been reading up a bit on how to use an SD card to install apps to instead of internal memory. I dont want to use it all up i hear that your phone can crash etc.
But not sure if my rom supports Using an external SD instead of internal memory. I have the app: "Rom Manager" which has those options to do with the external.
Just wondering what Roms for the aria support this . Ive seen alot of tutorials and not one of them are the same as the other. so wondering where the best spot for a tutorial would be for the "Aria"
Thanks

That ROM has DT A2SD support, so all that you need to do is create an EXT partition on the SD card using ROM Manager and you should be good to do.
Great thanks. I hear talk that ext 2 is better than 3, an others say it the otherway around... so does it REALLY matter?

ext2 is supposed to be easier on your SD card. ext3 uses journaling, which is said to wear down your sd card faster than normal. Not sure how much faster, or if it even has any affect on todays SD cards.
What the journaling does is it writes to the sd card on the fly so if the phone has an unexpected crash/shutdown, you have a better chance of everything on the ext being saved and less chance of any data loss/corruption. Ext2 doesnt have this protection. When I was running ext2 i never once had any problem with data loss/corruption. Rom Manager now does ext3 by default so I upgraded to ext3. If i could get ext4 support on cm7 I would upgrade to ext4.
Performance wise, there is no difference between ext2 and ext3. Ext4 however supposedly offers a performance increase. Ive not used ext4 on an sd card so I cant speak to that.

maybe its s2e then. I know s2e can mount my ext3 as ext4, but if I actually format to ext4 it wont mount. I thought the problem was with cm7, but I guess it must be s2e just doesnt support it.

I think that's the mount as ext4 option, which mounts the ext3 as ext4 without journaling. I just started using it a couple days ago and I haven't noticed any concernable diffrence though. Maybe ill try formatting to ext4 again and see if s2e takes it now.

Open up the Terminal Emulator program. Grant it root access when the Super User prompt comes up.
At the # prompt, enter:
a2sd status
It will then print out the status of the a2sd application.
Ok i got it working.. but now alot of my apps dont work. and also neither does the Android market...

Also if your using the included version of dt you might try the latest stable one 2.7.5.2 there are betas but they've always give me problems.

once i flash it in recovery mod how do ya access the dtapps2sd then?
That was the problem,, all is transfered now.
Thanks a bunch.
If you downloaded with the xda app it will be in tapatalk downloads. If you downloaded through your browser its in the plain download folder.fr008 comes with astro you can use it to move the file to your SD root if you like but you can browse folders while in recovery also

Hi All,
I have asked this question a few days back and now i got a solution for this so posting the details here.
So here are tips and tricks on how to partition your SDCARD and still get it detected by the Phone.
Ohk so first off all credits
this method is not my own i have got tips from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11687387&postcount=6
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811548 <- check the first post right after the quoted portion. That also suggest that last partition is used by froyo.
Based on this i started on the experiments and this is what i found.
Note : I have 3 partition right now.
500 MB = vfat first partition
1.5 GB = ext2 - kept for linux dualbooting experiments
5.4 GB = vfat second partition.
Based on my experiments this is what i can see.
first and last partition should be vfat.
first partition is available in recovery mode.
last partition is detected by froyo.
So if you want to use multiple partition then you need to make sure of keeping the following things in mind..
Note to MOD : Mod i thought this is related to DEV hence posted in this if this sounds more like a Q&A or other forum material please move the post to correct forum.
And why would I need it or what's the advantage of doing this?

as of now u wont...
but this brings up possibilities to have multiple OSes on SDCARD (without need of loop mounting)...
something like on mult OS ibooting HDDs...

Right now nothing of use to normal user.
however as dev's are working on custom kernel and DooMLorD working on custom kernel manager and ROM manager scripts.
I thought having mutiple partitions can also help. So did an experiment .
However explicitly for me its basic usage is for Experiments on Linux dual booting on X10i

also why Link2SD when you already have app2sd in froyo.

Links2SD moves much more data to SD than native Froyo.
And also, I can use the SD as storage without the apps becoming unavailable.
And I can move any app whether it supports it or not!

1) check how to automount other partitions
2) check Link2SD working
give me some time and i will check and report back that.

Link2SD i tried installing however it seems to have some issues detecting my partition.
I have
following layout right now
800MB - vfat - part1
1.6 GB - ext2 - part2
5 GB - vfat - part3
so we might need to look at the source code of the application

(from wht i gather) froyo+ android versions use /sdcard/.android_secure for native app2sd
there is a A2SD implementation which uses ext2/4 filesystem on sdcard to move apps to
I have found in the X8 forum this actually someone said that he is doing it even for the x10 mini. Has anybody any clue about this, if it's being prepared for our phones?. For those who don't understand the princip, it's all about moving the data files of each program to the mem card.

Woow that's really true, thanks. How can i start to use it, because all the items are greyed out. do i need to create a second partition in ext3/4?
If you have 2.2 or above (froyo or gingerbread) its native (a2sd), and with Eclair you can use Link2SD or some scripts to achieve something similar... I use Link2SD and a second (FAT) partition on SD, but have used Froyo and Ginger and A2sd native always worked (could move some apps in app manager).
Yes you need.
If you use native option, apps are moved partially to the fat part of sd.
If you use a2e or link2sd entire apps are moved to ext partition.
Link2sd is able to use a second fat partition.

Ungaze Data2sd Problem
Hi all,
Currently I'm using the Ungaze Data2sd with the ext2 partition ready. when I reboot it shows plenty of internal space which app2sd and link2sd doesn't make it for. However, whenever I downloaded apps and reboot the phone, those apps were gone. Can anyone help me with such problem?
Ok, I am on vo-1's CM7.2, this also happened with ICS2/Final.
SD-EXT worked great, I linked my data with link2sd and after installing some apps the partition is empy. Same thing happened when I used s2e in the past. I look at the sd-ext folder and there's nothing there. With link2sd when i try to create link for new installed apps it says that partition is read only. I checked permissions, everything was ok. Formating the sd-ext solved the problem but this is not a solution as all apps there can vanish at any time.
I checked that with 2 different sd cards, they are not the problem. I create the mount script with link2sd as ext3.
Can anyone help me on this one? I am tired of facing this again. Am I doing something wrong?
Something else when a card is partitioned through CWM 5, does this create a script for the card? Is link2sd causing a problem when it mounts the sd with ext3? HEEEEEEEELP!!!!

a dev's help would be great here. Either the card is not formatted properly from within CWM, or this is CM7 issue or... I really don't know. It's things like this that make me tired and wanna go back to stock rom where simple things work.

So I succesfully created one fat32 primary partition and one EXT3 primary partition. Maybe I'll test it again with CM7.2 tonight and link2sd to see what happens.

I'm having the problem when partitioning through CWM so I don't think that will help you. Also Know that you said that you had partitioned with mini tool I don't think that easeus will also do it for me....
Still no response from a dev... too sad!
You can backup your sd ext via Linux OS or just VMWare and a Ubuntu vm. Last time I have made a backup and formated the sd ext with mini tool and it start working again. But now I don´t want to format but find a new/better solution. Somewhere I´ve read the read only problem is caused by canceling the sd check and you have just to run it through...
Since this problem is happening with various roms,it isn't a problem with the rom.
Try converting ext3 to ext4,this is not guaranteed to work but try it
[UPDATE]Weird problem with sd-ext --> PROBLEM SOLVED!?!
OK...PROBLEM SOLVED!!! (At least for me) So here's the story...
1. I used this http://www.partition-tool.com/download.htm to partition sd. One primary fat32 and one ext3 1024MB partition. So I was sure sd was formated and partioned correctly (be ware, this program is a bit tricky but I am not gonna guide you through this - tricky at first but not difficult). Just make sure that the cluster size for fat32 should be 32KB and for EXT3 4KB. You should have something like this http://imageshack.us/f/810/65663741.jpg/ Partition sizes depend on your sd size and how much space you want to have on sd-ext. Just showing this to see what the outcome of the process must be.
2. Then placed the card on phone, started in recovery and then did a full wipe. As you know, when you wipe data/factory reset, sd-ext is also formated. I wasn't sure though what file system does CWM use to format sd-ext, that's why I did leave the sd on the phone.
3. So while in recovery, I pulled the card out, checked the card with Easeus and found that the sd-ext partition was not formated with a known file system, it said partition unkown!!!!!!! So I formated sd-ext with Easeus as an EXT3 again and put back in phone which was still in recovery. Then started to flashing things.
So far, everything is working great with link2sd (mounted sd-ext with ext3 when app first started - then reboot). I tested the hell out of it, created links for apps, then remove links, move apps to phone and opposite, lots of reboots and shutdowns to check if the sd-ext will stop working....After 180 apps phone works great, sd-ext is still there.
BOTTOM LINE
I think CWM has a problem when partitioning sd/formating sd-ext. Bottom line is when doing a full wipe, don't have the sd on the phone. Format and partition it with Easeus (or one of your choice) or delete files/folders you don't want with that. Remember, both FAT32 AND EXT3 should be PRIMARY!!!
Let say i already flash rom...then i wan to create partition on my sd...do i need to flash rom again after i complete partitioning my sd? Now im running cynoace what sd ext i need to create 3 or 4? Any one can help me?

So i haven't used link2sd but i've read many good things so i'm trying it out on my OG evo while I wait for best buy to call me and tell me my evoLTE is in. For those that already have the phone can you give me a simple walk through for partitioning and which format to use, ext2, ext3,ext4, etc
i just did a partition using amon's recovery and made a 2gb ext3 on the OG evo. about to download link2sd and give it a try
edit...i have my evoLTE but I'm hesitant to partition my 32sd card.. any input anyone??

I don't think you'd need to use link2sd. Maybe phones with 1gig of storage like on the OG EVO but the LTE has 16 gigs internal.

16gigs internal but i thought only 2gigs was for app data...did i read that wrong, i'm pretty sure only 2gb are allocated for apps
yep i triple checked....2gb for apps
for anyone interested Link2SD works fine if you make the partition ext2, I made a 8gb ext2 partition on my 32gb card and moved apps over to the sd just fine. I saw multiple posts about people wishing they could store their apps on the external sd, well this is one way
As of version 2.1.1 Link2sd will NOT work on El Tevo. It doesn't recognize the external sdcard. It only recognizes the internal flash ram - which is not something I want to partition at this time.
Particularly since I'm waiting for a non-HTC method of unlocking the bootloader and I have no custom recovery/nandroid.

Use a programm like Minitool Partition Wizard, there are others that are similar but i like this one because it is simple to use and allows youcreate a second partition on your SD without having to format it. So you don't have to backup and then put everything back on the card again.

Hmm.... could he mean creating an ext4 partition and if its compatible with CM7? That was my first interpretation of the question.

Oh, I didn't see him mention Cm7 ! But my reply still stands
yes its imposimble
No, its possible, you would need to write a script which automounts the ext4 partition at boot as vold won't do that and fixes permissions, as you would get lots of fcs without.

Yes it is possible. U need to install data2sd (flash from cwm/any custom recovery) or link2sd available in android market.
Search for link2sd and data2sd in google or here in xda.

i think he talks about formatting the whole sdcard with ext4 and mount that partition as sdcard for performance purposes. Correct me if i'm wrong, but thats how i understood that post. I actually tried the same a few months ago, there really seems to be increased perfomance of the sdcard and using fat32 on a linux devices doesn't make too much sense for me anyways.

yes thats my question...
I always try and use ext4 in my sd cards. Performance seems to be better. The only reason I ever use FAT32 is so that I can view content in Windows.
No sir. U have to use a partitioning tool to format your SD vard. I am a noob. Learned this technique in xda. It's called a "minitool partition wizard home edition". U can create different number of formats all primary though. I used ext4 for a long time. But now I use ext2. The computer only recognises the first primary partition. So the ext2/4 will not be recognised by the pc and with the help of link2sd or data2sd U'll be able to use it as your internal memory if your phone memory is really tiny. It's related to performance but first its related to expanding your internal memory.
