They are on the same network right? Or tethered together? You might double-check the subnet and the broadcast address, but it should "just work"

Aha, good point, although not necessary on the server side.

I'm using Share GPS on my phone (Sprint Hero) and Blue GPS on my Nook Color to receive. I've tried more combinations of apps to make this work then I can remember and this is the best I've found so far....Also just something to keep in mind, results may vary not just with what rom you're using, but also if you've changed your kernels, since they control the drivers for bluetooth / wifi.
I use the tetherGPS widget (server) on my phone LG Optints M and tethergps widget (client) on my Nookcolor and works perfectly. At least with Aura by sigic.

Try this on the server: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Run it.
Connect to it on NC.
Use tetherGPS.
Profit!
Can't seem to get this to work. The IP will not broadcast from my HTC Aria. I'm running both CM7 on my phone and Nook. I have mock locations enable on both. I'm using the build in CM hot spot from the aria and the nook see it and logs on just fine. But the client can't see the server. And the server will not broadcast the IP. Is it the build in hot spot and I'll need to use another wifi hotspot app or I'm I just missing something. Please help. Thank you.

This is at the early stage of development. I wrote an app that pull the GPS coordinates from the phone and sets up a mock location provider to give the nook true GPS coordinates. For now, I hard coded the server's (phone) IP address into the app. I will change this in the near future.
Setup:
Wireless Tether app installed on phone
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk
gpstether installed on phone
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gpstether&feature=search_result
My app installed on nook
Getting it to work:
Start Wireless Tether using the default LAN address (192.168.2.0/24). I hard coded the address for right now. Use the gateway IP address as the GPSTether's address.
Connect nook to Internet via wireless or bluetooth tether
Uncheck "Use wireless network" under "Location & Security settings" on the Nook 9Note: this is not require. You only need to do this to be sure that your are getting coordinates from the GPS and not the wireless network.)
Check "Allow mock locations" under "Development" on the Nook
Start gpstether on phone. Press the home button once it is started. You do not need it displayed on the screen for it to work.
Start my app on the nook. Press the home button once it is started. You do not need it displayed on the screen for it to work.
Then you should be good to go. Test with google maps.
[strke]You have to "Force Stop" my app and gpstether to close them. I will fix this in the future too.[/strke] Fixed
Changelog:
8/12/11
Install the Droid2DroidGPSTether app on the phone. Start wireless tether then gpstether. Of course, the gps must be on.
Install the gps app on the nook. Connect to the wireless tether network then start this app. You can configure the wireless settings and gps settings within the gps app.
Use the GPSTether app that is attached. It will not stop without having to force close.
Client will automatically use the gateway ip as the gps tether server.
7/20/11
Server is no longer hardcoded. If you are tethered, then use the Gateway of the nook, otherwise use the IP address of the phone.
Added start and stop button
Added some exception handling to prevent FCs
Reusing connect; not closing and recreating new connect every time
Faked Accuracy so Navigation thinks it is connect to real GPS
TODO
Status Messages is not complete (On that note, does anyone know how to update a TextView from a thread to the parent?)
I'm confused; what advantage does this have over using TetherGPS client on the Nook? I've been using GPS on the Nook since I got it by using TetherGPS server on my Optimus and the client on the Nook, haven't had any trouble.
TetherGPS isn't free
I'll try this shortly on my Honeycomb. Hard coding IP address may be an issue on my phone.
Great start!

TetherGPS is different then GPStether. I was confused at first too. I went looking for some tethering software and I found GPStether first. By the time I found TetherGPS I was too far along to stop. Doesn't hurt to have two products out there.
can't run on my Honeycomb'd NC. Get "No Netfilter Sorry, but your kernel does not have all necessary features for running this application."
Also, does installing GPSTether on my mobile phone do exactly the same thing as installing TetherGPS (which costs $)?
Looking again at the first post, I'm not sure about having to disable wifi and location settings on my Nook just to get this working. It's ok to do it for an early alpha release, but not once the app becomes mature, since it's a lot of extra steps to have to do manually. Hopefully these things get done by the app and re-enabled when you exit or something.
I just use a GPS over BT!

The GPSTether and Wireless Tether should run on the phone. The only thing that runs on the nook is the gps.apk that is at the bottom of the post. It does not use Netfilter. You do not have to disable "Use wireless networks". I just did this to make should you were getting the coordinates from the phone.
which gps and what app on the nook?
Works well for me so far, thanks for this great little utility!

Brian, is it possible to make the code for the available for the Archos 101 and HP Touchpad?
The file gps.apk gives a parser error !
I have also tried to download droid 2 droid gps client from the market, but no luck.
Hey everyone, just wanted to let you rooted android users out there know that you can tether to your touchpad pretty easily.
Go download the newest version of wifi tether 3.1beta5
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Install it
Run it
Menu-Settings
Change Device-Profile
Select Samsung Fascinate
Change Setup-Method
Select Softap for Samsung (Master)
Back to main screen
And now you are good to go. I have used this on my fascinate running the community rom, also read that someone had it running on their charge as well.
Have fun tethering.
Post back if this does or doesn't work for you, what device, and what rom/kernal you are running.

I cannot seem to connect Touchpad to any adhoc WiFi network. Really would like a fix for this one. iPads and iPhones connect to adhoc networks just fine.
I would manually enter the ssid, broadcast id, network id and ip address and forget dealing with dhcp if it's not working
maybe reboot? Mine works flawlessly on my android and touchpad
From what Im gathering, my HTC hero uses ad-hoc and the touchpad doesnt pick that up. Shame, but I have a feeling Im SOL.
Try turning off all the security settings etc...

Some android phones can only broadcast wifi via adhoc mode which is incompatible with the touchpad. Its not a matter of what program you choose, if your phone can only do ad-hoc wifi then it wont work. Try using bluetooth (Wireless Tether 2.0.7)

Wifi tethering the touchpad works great using my HTC incredible (running CM7). Must be the ad-hoc issue others have mentioned.
i had issues getting my tp to connect to the wireless hotspot from my desire s.
as soon as i changed the security type from wpa2 to wpa it started working.

The reason for that might be that they are two different standards of encryption, lollol, neither is backward/forward compatible with the other

yes i know that. i'm not a dickhead.
the TP is supposed to support WPA2, however it had issues with WPA2 on my desire s.
This does not work for me Either-it keeps saying 'Tethering but with Errors-see Log' and the log cannot load the Sofap part...
I have a feeling some phones can only broudcast WiFi in Ad-Hoc-Like my HTC HERO It may be time to say goodbye to it after all...I was actually hoping the TouchPad would mean i dont need a new phone as most of my stuff (good Flash Web Browser/Email/Games/Whatsapp/Facebook) would be sorted between the two devices....Oh well....
I believe the easiest way to tether from your rooted Android to the Touchpad is if you're running CM7, to use the built in wi-fi tether as it works flawlessly!
i dont see this option for fascinate
Select Softap for Samsung (Master)
i only see WEXT (ad-hoc)
I found a Wireless Tether Widget on the Free Amazon App of the Day called Tethering Widget. It REALLY works on my Xoom and HP Touchpad. Created a SSID, Password, used WPA2 PSK. I FINALLY get Free Wireless Tethering
Typing this on my HP Touchpad using the Tethering Widget. My wife has it and so do I and are Photon's are ONLY Rooted. Works Great.

Many Android devices already have WiFi tethering built in, and there's a number of applications available on the market that do this, some free, some not.
AFAIK the only app to do this from the TouchPad side is is freeTether from Preware.

this is actually just a widget and not an app in the android market. In other words it does nothing other than add a shortcut to your home screen on android. I use the built in WiFi tether that came with tytung Rom for hd2 and seems to work just fine for me. Make sure you select WPA2 and not open.
I used wireless tether without any problem on my old droid X, but now I'm having connection issues. My Asus transformer can see my Rezound just fine and connect, but my in dashoard Galaxy Tab doesn't see it at all.
I've tried the current beta of Wireless Tether, 2.0.7, Barnacle, and Open Garden, all with the same results.
We need to nail down what specific settings those successfully tethering are using.
Please list the following.
1. What app you are using.
2. What settings you are using (device presets, clamping, ect.).
3. What you are successful in tethering wirelessly to.
I'm going to run a few more tests, and post mine.
I don't mean to ask a dumb question but these apps just allow you to use your phones 4g on a laptop, etc. ? Are they free if you have unlimited data?
Why aren't people using Mobile hotspot to tether or am I getting confused?

Thanks for the post. I really need to know this too. I've tried everything but still a no go.
According to wiki ad hoc needs the same channels to work. For the people that do have it working what channels are you using in ad hoc mode.
Definition
To set up an ad-hoc wireless network, each wireless adapter must be configured for ad-hoc mode versus the alternative infrastructure mode. In addition, all wireless adapters on the ad-hoc network must use the same SSID and the same channel number.
from my newly unlocked Rezound
The problem is what devices you try to use to connect to your phone's mobile connection. I tried connecting with my Asus laptop (Windows 7) and it wouldn't connect correctly. I tried connecting with my gf's windows xp laptop and it works perfectly fine!
If you have questions about wireless tethering, please go do a bit of searching and reading, there are hundreds if threads that describe what it is.
This is a thread so we can get it working right.

I fought for days over this before this release and from my trial and endless errors Ive come to realize (very very long story short) for the time being the best work through is using "OpenGarden" from the market. Don't change any settings. Just have an open connection and use access control. Like I said. Long story short, the issue lies within encryption. Leave it open and use access control. Hope this helps.

+1. Its the only way I got it to work with my device so far.
So what paid/free apps are currently working?
Is anyone tethering a Touchpad running CM7 successfully? or an iPad? Currently posting for hotspot, but might cancel if I can still successfully tether those two over Adhoc. I can't get the Touchpad to work using wifi tether yet and don't have an iPad right now.

I've successfully tethered my IPad2 to my Rezound with Wireless Tether 2.0.7.
I also tether my Ipad2 without any problems. I'm using Open Garden.
Does my NT have GPS? I loaded CM7 on my father-in-laws Nook Color, got Google Maps loaded and it appeared to run great. I can't seem to find "Location Services" settings or anything on my NT though.
FYI - NT 16GB 1.4.2 rooted via sd card, stock ROM
Do I have to load CM to get access to GPS?
No, the location is from WiFi.
So, was I just getting faked out on the Nook Color as well? Is there any way to get some sort of location services working?
Sent from my BNTV250 using XDA
Yes, it is likely the same thing that happened on the color. As there is no GPS receiver or cell radio there is no other way than WiFi to locate the device.
The only way to get a GPS signal to your nook tablet is to wifi tether your tablet to a phone with good and then push the GPS signal to the nook using an app called tether GPS.
I have a routed original Droid that I tether to using open garden tether app. Then I push NY phones GPS location using tether GPS. It is awesome using google navigation on my tablet, muchmore visibility than a small phone.
Let me know if you have any questions.
