To someone who has not worked with tablets before, but has good computer knowledge. I sure would like to see (even pay for) a step by step from the beginning of a stock updated gtab, rooting to loading roms. Are we supposed to z4root, clockwork, backup, just load a rom. The guides are great that are here, but none of them are consistant. I could eventually after several months make heads or tales, sure would like some opinions and how will this effect the fact that we know honeycomb is coming I assume, What is the stable rom to use?
Thanks for your consideration.
I feel your pain. I recently received my $279 gtab. I needed to put it to use right away and was afraid to flash it until I had more time to study the issues involved.
It took me a few days to figure out what to do. I ended up installing the Vegan 7 ROM using Clockworkmod 8.

There is another one I cannot find now, but author also has a blog with some instructions (google search fugatech)
Some more info to install CM8:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865017
I installed clockworkmod on my external sdcard (sdcard2). I used the sdcard slot on my computer to transfer files to sdcard2 of my gtab -- just like you would a thumb drive -- by unzipping the downloaded file directly to the sdcard
I partitioned as explained and deleted caches that mentioned in cwm menu items
I used cwm to connect my gtab to my pc via usb. I used my pc to create a folder on gtab intermal storage (sdcard) named "ROM." I then copied the whole vegan zip file to the ROM folder
There is a menu item in cwm that will flash your rom. All I needed to do was to browse to the zip file I copied to the rom folder and let it do its work
I didn't have to do the market fix
Went to Market and downloaded latest flash player.
The whole thing takes only a few minutes once you are ready. Once you hace CWM installed and see the menus things will be come clearer. I suggest you forget about the ROMs and just install Clockworkmod and take a look at it. Then go get Vegan 7.
It seems a lot of time is spent, and threads created, by people just trying to figure out where to start.....especially considering that the process itself is very simple.

I've had my g-Tab all of a week. I got it through Circuit City. The "application crashes" I learned are called "Force Close." Through the forum I found the solutions. I'd learned I needed the updated ROM and wanted Honeycomb. So this ROM seemed the best. I like the ROM as I've used it most of the day. I agree with the comment about soft keys because in the dark it's hard to see the keys on the bezel. The bugs I encounter are frustrating but, I've found solutions here in the forum. I'm new to Android on so many levels. This is my first Android device. So now I'm stuck.
All I wanted to do was transfer the files I have on my HTC Touchpro to my Tab. (For the 3rd Time.)(I've been through Stock ROM's and Mods several times over.) In reading I know I can't set an Adhoc WiFi tether. I also know I need the right App to transfer a file from the PC to the Tab via bluetooth or something.
So now I tried the USB file transfer. Of course it went into Debug mode. I tried some of the solutions for getting transfer mode operating but, that wasn't successful. I figured the SDCardFix solves this problem. So Tjohnsonjr says to push the file into the system/etc. folder. How would this be done?
You mean copy onto an SDcard Ext from the PC and then mount onto the gTab?
For some reason I can't even get my card to be read by the PC (I formatted it using the G-Tab command. Now when I put in my PC the explore window hangs.)
Use a bluetooth transfer? All I get is my Tab trying to use my PC as a headset. I can push a file from the Tab to the PC but, I' haven't figured the reverse.
BTW I thought I might have "bricked" the tab twice. I used CWMod to wipe cache, data, system and set the new partition. Since all of the files were on the internal SDcard the partition wiped the update.zip and command files. The reboot eventually started functioning and it pulled up "something...dirty....3388"
So obviously somewhere in the system there is still an OM android system ROM. (I think I'd like to hang onto that.)
BTW: the error reads:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.
Well I hope tjohnsonjr gets this. He's put a lot of work into this ROM. But since the xda-developers won't let me post into the Developer's forum he probably won't. (Too much of a noob).
PS I know some have critiqued the gTab because of it's size. Well for a man who can't see too well that's great. The biggest problem I have with my HTC Touchpro right now is the screen is too small to read the fine print without reading glasses. If I ever figure out how to get the wifi tether working between these two devices. I'd have the perfect solution to several of my problems.
UPdate.zip=SDcardFix.zip
I changed the file name to see if that would make a difference. I was desperate.
try going back to stock rom and then installing. I had a similar problem, and I used nvFlash to go back to stock, then reinstall cwm and repartitioned, cleared data/cache etc.
Installed after doing all that and it worked like a charm.
[Q] [ROM-AOSP]G-Harmony Gingerbread 2.3.3 with Honeycomb elements(UPDATED 4/17)
TJ posted an update to his ROM. The fix to the USB works by renaming the EMMC to the external SDcard per the posts seen on this website. So if you backed up apps and data to the ext SDcard it is now listed under the emmc directory. The SDcard is the internal memory. Not sure how that's going to work when pushing apps and data to the external card. (See forum posts discussing this workaround for the situation for all ROM's.) The USB connection now works for transferring files onto the GTab. Use a file manager for pushing from internal memory to the external SDCard.
The Adhoc Wifi connection seems to work. Meaning I got my cellphone and gTab to connect to one another however, I was unable to get the gTab to connect to the internet via the cellphone. (I'm using an HTC Touchpro on Sprint. I've never gotten the wifi hotspot to function properly but, I'm experimenting with WMWIFIRouter.)
Thanks to TJ for all of the hardwork on this ROM.
Hello,
I'm new to the whole ROM flashing scene and I could use just a little help. I've been aware of the basic idea behind it for a while, but with a locked bootloader on my cell phone, I haven't had any actual experience doing it.
I'm needing help because I've bought a G tablet from a guy who has already rooted and flashed the tablet with Flashback 10.1 Honeycomb. After reading up on these forums and watching some videos online, it sounds like honeycomb ROMS aren't working quite as well as the Gingerbread ROMS (I'm primarily getting this tablet for use with videos, and want to use the front facing camera).
After reading about various ROMs, it sounds like Vegan Tab is a good build to run. I went to the website to download the latest build of Vegan Tab and saw that 7.1.0 GingerEdition has been posted.
From what I can gather, Flashback 10.1 uses the 1.2 bootloader. Vegan Tab 7.1 does come with a 1.2 bootloader version so I plan on using this install package. After reading some guides I think I understand how to do it, but would like some reassurance that I'm going to do it right.
My plan will follow in the next post.
Step 1. I unzip my ClockworkMod v08 that I downloaded to the root of my Micro SD card creating an update.zip file and a Recovery folder at the lowest level of my external card.
Step 2. Involves powering down the tab, then power on by pressing Power + volume up and keeping pressed until the birds appear, and wait for clockworkmod to install..(I’m not sure if it will already be installed from the previous user installing Flashback 10.1)
Step 3. I will either re-partition the device as outlined in the guide here on this site, or move along to the next step.
Step 4 Is where I go to the main menu of ClockworkMod and Mount USB Storage while connected to the PC. I then create a ROMS folder at the root of the tablet’s internal storage. Inside ROMS will by my Vegan Tab 7.1.0 .zip file I downloaded earlier (the website stated it is in update.zip format).
Step 5. I will now turn off the device and boot back into Clockwork Mod and go to Mounts and Storage and mount /System and /Data. I navigate back to menu and select install zip from sdcard, then navigate to the ROMS folder using and select the .zip I placed there. Rom is installed.
Step 6. After “Install from scdcard complete” message, I navigate back to main menu and the back to mounts and storage. I mount /system and /data again. Back then to the main menu.
Step 7. Final thing to do is “wipe data/factory reset” I plan to select it to delete all data and cache as advised on the Vegan Tab website where I got my ROM. Once done I reboot one final time.
This is my plan of attack from beginning to end. I’ve read several guides on the process and while I didn’t read how to do it, I read that NVflash is necessary for some installs. My questions are:
Do I need to NVflash if I am installing a new 1.2 bootloader ROM?
Do you think ClockworkMod will already be installed?
Do I need to re-partition the device, or will this cause a problem?
Anyone have any advice on this ROM that I may not know about? I didn’t see a lot posted about it issue wise other than some people having issues flashing from other version of Vegan Tab. I didn’t see anyone posting trouble flashing from Flashback 10.1.
Are there any flaws with my understanding of the process or is there anything I’ve listed to do that will cause the device to brick?
I’m very sorry for the lengthy first time post. I’ve been lurking here for a while reading up on stuff, but I would feel much for confident that I do understand the process.
I’m comftorable with the possible risks of installing a new ROM, but I’m trying to keep the risks to a minimum if at all possible. I can’t thank you enough if you’ve endured and read this whole post. I would appreciate any feedback given.
You don't necessarily need to NVflash, but I would if I were in your shoes. I like to start with stock (periodically) and go through all the steps of getting the ROM up and running the way I want. Especially if I want to stick with one ROM for a daily driver.
To get up and running quickly with NVflash check out this link below "NVflash" on the Flashback OP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138100 This download includes all the files you will need to NVflash, and a tutorial for best practices when installing a 1.2 based rom after NVflash. This NVflash will also install clockwork so you can skip that step after.
Your current setup probably has cwm installed already. You can test that by rebooting and holding the + volume button.
If Honeycomb isn't important to you, then I would recommend a Froyo based rom. Froyo has hardware acceleration and is the best for pure speed and stability on this tablet. My current daily driver is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084573
If you haven't discovered this yet http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/ definitely bookmark it as a valuable resource.
Re-Partitioning: If your previous owner knew what he was doing your device is probably partitioned correctly, but you can do it again. It will delete all contents of your sdcard.
Awesome first post by the way
Thanks a bunch for the help! I think I will take your advise, and NVflash to stock before I install another ROM. I read the tutorial at the Viewsonic Gtablet for Dummies site and the guide given there provides a download of NVflash with CWM, but if I'm reading your post right, you think I should use the NVflash posted in the Flashback 10.1 thread.
I'll modify my plans to NVflash as provided in the Flashback 10.1 thread, then resume at step 4 (skipping installation of ClockworkMod, and the re-partition).
I'm reading up on your suggested ROM and thinking now I may go with Froyo based as you advise. I'll ready up on the one you suggested, but I noticed Calkulin+Clemsyn 1.5ghz Froyo Combo VERSION 8 final, and think I may try it out as Skype would be nice to have.
Any other tips, or advise is very, welcome!
If you are looking for a second opinion I agree with brett. I used to alternate between Vegan and the various Honeycombs, but I ended up back on froyo myself simply for fully working hardware 100%. I don't remember what rom I last had on mine before I lent it to a friend but once I get it back I myself plan on trying the c&c 8 as well.
Glad your going to start out with an NVflash. There shouldn't be a significant difference between the nvflash files posted on gtab for dummies and the files available from the Flashback OP. But the set I have been using come from the Flashback OP, so It's my default recommendation. I also like the tutorial txt file included with the Flashback OP download.
CC V8 and Beasty are very similar in speed and stability. The primary difference is that CC is based on Tap'n'Tap (gTab Stock) and has some tablet oriented UI features. It's really a toss up between the two for me.
You'll pull your hair out trying to figure out how to change the keyboard on CC, so here is the fix in advance http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummie...2-04-replace-soft-keyboard-in-tnt-based-roms-
Good luck.
I am with a Nook Tablet 16gb that was purchased with 1.4.0 and is now with 1.4.2. I was happy sideloading on 1.4.0, but now understand I have to go rooting...
I have been trying several methods, and just can't get it though. One problem is I am in Africa, and downloading 100MB images takes more than 2h and recurrently fails with size mismatches or other errors before the end
Now, I am sure I should be able get Indirect's methods work, but end up with some nothingness...:
1> Indirect's method one: "make a magic SD card to load up CWM, and root their device"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21895025&postcount=14
I go through all steps with no problem, run CWM. However, for the last step to install zip from CWM:
- I guess it refers to the CWM_SD_flash_and_exe.zip again? It tells me fail to install, and the log says ""failed to open /sys/class/android_usb/android0/state: no such file or directory""
- I also tried using NT-CWM-SD.zip provided elsewhere by Sprint (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583à), same thing
2> Indirect method two: "How to root 1.4.1 (or any other version) using just an sdcard {easy}"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583
I tried the 1st (non windows) approach, that was creating a partition on the SDcard myself (did with Acronis Disk Director Suite, worked well),
I did the partition, copied the required files on the root of SD card, got CWM running. But then, the tutorial says:
Now you just need to download this zip file:
http://goo-inside.me/apps/Indirect/N...s_and_root.zip
just put onto the /mnt/media/ directory or you can push to /emmc/ while in CWM.
I am not sure I understand these instructions... I got the Gapps_and_root.zip onto my SDcard root, used CWD mode to unzip & install it successfully.
After that I reboot... I think it asks me to reset the tablet (someway like I have no choice), and then opens the Nook wizard and I cant get anything else out of it.
3> CM7 alpha final
I am now trying to use the CM7 method through SD card (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826) but dont succeed to download the required 120MB file... (Team-B-CM7SD-Alpha_final.img.zip)
=> So... any help or idea to get out of this?
NB: I am computer savy but not Android expert (though I killesed myself twice to install android market on chinese devices and learnet something), I can use a SDcard reader or USB cable but dont know to run ADB or alike. Again, I have trouble to download huge files!
Thanks a lot to help me... I am pulling my hair here already 3 days
I understand the experts are on this forum, and hope to get some help or I ll get mad and my husband's Xmas present will go useless... (he is Mozambican and we found out B&N has no portuguese books! I need Kindle.. and few other apps!)

Sideloading still with Sideload Wonder Machine on Nook 1.4.2?
Sorry, yes. I have now asked the moderator.
Sideloading still with Sideload Wonder Machine?
In the meantime, I ve found in this great sticky post:
NT Reference Thread | Tips & Tricks | How to's | Videos | NEWBIE?
It talks of this Windows programme to sideload any apps.
http://www.androidcentral.com/sideload-android-apps-all-you-want-sideload-wonder-machine
I wonder if that still can work on Nook 1.4.2 (unrooted)?
Please help understand the instructions
Well, this was originally posted here and then moved to my own thread by some admin I guess....

[MODS/HACKS/THEMES] Nook Tablet ONE-STOP-SHOP for CM7 | UPDATE! March/12
Hi,
I understand this thread is not supposed to be for newbies, yet I am not an expert, but every other method I tried failed (Indirect's method, etc, see here) and I am having troubles (from Africa) downloading big files, so this one I got and I am willing to try because I really need to get out of Nook rom. Though I'd love some advice
I am with a Nook 16Gb Tablet that I got with 1.4.0 and had sideloaded apps. Now it is on 1.4.2 and I have reset everyting in various previous attemps, so it is quite clean. Unrooted. I have a SD card, a disk partitionning software, and a USB cable, but no ADB.
My goal is, minimum, to be able load few apps (Kindle, a radio I like, etc), and if it is rooted and with access to Market, even better, then I'll do even more.
Luckily, I have been able to download the various files in this post.
My questions:
1> internal or SD ?
Which method you think is simplier and more stable?
2> Stable versions now?
It looks like these versions have started as beta, but been improved; Could they be considered stable now?
I saw there are other ones out there, but I could not succeed download them ("Team-B-CM7SD-Alpha_final.img_001.zip")
4> Requirements
Do I understand well there are no special requirements before starting that? Can be on unrooted device, 1.4.2?
3> reading the instructions...
I am not so expert and may need some help:
1. Download the file of the mod you pick
=> OK
2. Copy the zip file in the root (/) of Internal OR External SDcard (Pick one)
=> OK for external. But if you talk of internal, does it mean the tablet should already be rooted?
3. Verify md5 of the file >> ES File Explorer>Properties let you check md5
=> Is this step compulsory? How do you do that with an unrooted tablet and no ES file explorer in?
4. Boot into CWM
=> This I knew to do with Indirect method. Does it mean I should have done that before? Or the img file provided here will enable me do it ?
4.1 Go to Backup & restore>> Backup your current ROM if you haven't already
=> ok
4.2 Format system, Wipe cache, advanced>> Wipe dalvik cache
=> Is this step compulsory? How do you exactly do that, all from CWM?
4.3 Re-flash CM7 ROM
=> Does that just mean to reboot?
4.4 Flash the mod
=> Does that just mean to reboot? apparently not... then how?
5. Reboot your device. ENJOY!
I am sorry for beeing so basic, but I am sure I ma not the only one...
Thanks for the precious help!
If you are just trying to root the device, try this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439630
Thanks for the link, I will do!
Does this mean the NT must be rooted BEFORe going for this CM7 procedure?
Well, I am new to this forum because I recently bought a Galaxy Player. This is my first Android device and I have rooted it using SOC. I have installed clockworkmod but there is no option for the Galaxy Player. I have downloaded the ICS rom for the 5.0 USA version and I am just a complete noob to custom roms. Can anyone direct me to a goods tutorial on this or just a quick rundown on how to do it, I am just a really confused 14 year old... Thanks

just pretend you didn't do any of that and...
1. download odin3 v1.3 (windows application)
2. download the samsung usb drivers and install them, i can't remember where i got them
3. plug phone into usb, turn off while plugged in, turn back on while holding volume down (maybe it was up?)
4. go into odin and click the pda button and select...
5. this file and press "start" (i think that's what it's labeled)
6. the phone will reboot itself back to normal
7. copy this zip onto your sd.
8. turn the phone off, and turn back on while holding volume up
9. back that **** up, i dunno what the hell it's labeled
10. wipe data/cache/dalvik (dalik is under advanced)
11. choose to install zip from sd, choose the "this zip" from step 7
12. choose install from zip again -> ICS ROM you downloaded
13. reboot, try out ICS for 2 seconds
14. turn off, boot into recovery (the volume up + power **** we keep doing)
15. install from zip -> Google Apps zip
16. reboot and enjoy ICS and google apps and all the other cool stuff the internet has to offer
Thanks! Very well written, I'll try it out later tonight.
I have installed it successfully, however I don't think it detects my internal SD card. Do you know why that is?

idk what you mean by "it" nor do i pay attention to my internal at all since i have 32gb external
I meant the device doesn't detect it, and I do not have an external at the moment.

This is why you should always read the entire post when you download a ROM. That issue is mentioned several times through the thread, and it has yet to have been resolved to the best of my knowledge. But always look into what your flashing, otherwise you'll probably end up with a really shiny paperweight on your hands.
Yes, I should've looked at the whole thread but I f'd it up badly now... So, I read what you said about the "SD card problem in the thread" and I took a look and saw that you had to switch around /emmc (I think?) and /sdcard around in the vold.fstab file in the /etc directory. SO, I was stupid and extracted the whole .zip of the ROM, changed the contents in the vold.fstab file, re-zipped it up, and tried to flash it again. Unfortunately, I tried to flash but this is what CWM Recovery said:
-- Installing: /emmc/ICS/3-31.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
... It's probably because the signature verification failed (because of no signature). And I was also being so stupid as to deleting the original ROM off of my SD card... I also note that I am doing this all from an internal, I do not have an external... This is what I am going to:
Get an external microSD and microSD reader for the PC
Put the original ROM on it
Flash it from the external
I am guessing that it would work from that way, as I probably f's up the internal. Can someone clear this up? Will this method work?
Disregard my last post, I am all set back to the stock ROM with no problems. Anyways, thanks for the support, and I will always try to look at the whole thread before flashing a new ROM.

Check here this forum has a lot of custom roms for the SGP player and a lot of smart people who explain it as good as M.I.T.

Sorry for the noobish question, I've looked for an answer but I haven't been able to find one thus far.
To the best of my knowledge, I have successfully unlocked the the booter and flashed a custom recovery. I also believe I have superuser installed (this was accomplished through TWRP).
The problem I run into is with flashing a custom rom. The first step always includes places the zip of the rom onto the sd card (or virtual sd card as I believe it is in this case) of my HTC One. I don't know how to accomplish this. I cannot browse the internal memory of the HTC One through my computer- whether it is in boot mode, recovery mode, or just booted regularly with USB debugging on or off. How do I get the actual zip ONTO the device?
The main thing I want to accomplish is to remove blinkfeed and change the theme of my device to be more minimalistic. I'm sure I can find a rom out there that does this, I'm just running into problems with this particular step. Should I be able to browse the memory of my device via the PC, or is there a different method of getting the zip onto my device entirely?
Thank you for the help
Either download it on to the phone directly or move it on to your phone from your pc via usb

you don't need to flash a rom to remove Blinkfeed. Download Nova launcher or Go EX launcher from Google play and that will solve your Blinkfeed issue.
do you have the proper drivers installed on your pc? Normally when I plug my phone in, HTC SYnc starts up and shortly after a small window pops up with my Ones internal storage.. I click on that and it takes me right to the root of my sdcard (internal storage).

Although I suggest using the cable you could also put the rom in googledrive, or any other cloud storage site. Then download to /sdcard/downloads folder using an app like EZ File Manager. Now the rom is on your phone. Just might take a little while depending on the size of the file.

You've done the hard parts unlocking the bootloader and rooting the device. Assuming you have custom recovery installed like TWRP or CWM, flashing new roms is easy in comparison.
You can download these rom zip files directly to your phone off a browser link or FTP or google drive and all those downloads should default to your downloads directory on your storage. You can store them basically anywhere but I created a folder in the main directory to store all my custom rom and kernel zip files and gave it a name I remember. Then when you flash the rom you have to enter custom recovery first, and from there find that directory, pick whatever zip you want to flash and do it. The exact step by step process is more detailed but thats what the online instructions and tutorials are for, i found youtube really helpful because you get to see exactly what they are doing step by step and then after that, its easier to following the vague sounding text-only instructions in the threads here, which can sound a little cryptic for noobies

getting rom onto phone
Assuming you already downloaded the ROM zip onto your computer and are connected to your phone via USB cable
...go to the ROM zip on the computer,
R click on the ROM zip that should bring up a box with multiple options
somewhere in that box should be option to Send To and find HTC One,
click on it and you will be good to go,
it may also bring up an options box about "...this file contains media files, should media files be sent to media section of phone" choose No
Boot into recovery follow dev's reco for flashing ROM
Hope this helps
