Installing Win 7 on G Tab? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The ViewPad 10 has dual boot os' & I was wondering if anyone has managed or if it could be done on our G-Tabs? If so could you kindly share how to go about about doing this.

No it cant be done

Fair enough, but can I ask why? I had a cheapie Zenithink ZT-180v2 who's specs are crap & I was able to load WinCe with no problems.

because win7 is not designed to run on arm processors just x86 the viewpad is a intel adam processor and android has been ported to run on it.

Wait for windows 8 to ask this question... or do what i do... remote desktop with an RDP app :]. Better battery life than any windows 7 tablet to boot.

That would be Atom processor, not adam.
On the other hand Win Phone 7 might work on G-tab..... Anyone thought about that?

Yeah I've been trying to get Splashtop Remote to work away from my local network for days now but haven't had luck setting up the router to recognize the G-Tab & vice versa when I'm away from home. If I'm locally connected to my wifi, no prob but then what's the point of using a remote app if I'm at home. Other apps I can get to work, but they are slow compared to Splashtop.

[Q] Windows on GT?

This may sound like a weird question, but I am just curious to know if it is possible to install windows 7, or xp on Galaxy tab 10.1. As my limited knowledge about computers tells me, GT is essentially a computer with a cpu and ram and a kind of hard drive, so theoretically at least, it seems to me that it should be possible to install windows on the tablet.

Welcome to the forums. The answer is no. Windows won't run on the chip that's in the tablet (it's called ARM architecture; same reason windows won't run on a cellphone). I've heard rumors that windows 8 may be possible at some point.
I have Windows 7 on my Tab 10 so yes you can use Windows 7.

Seriously, though. That sounds like horse**** from the same guy who claims to have played with Kal-el devices. Let's see a video.
How's this?
Splashtop HD running my home computer from work.

Excuse the fumbling. It's hard to work the screen looking at the phone screen. And I should mention that we only have an 802.11g connection here at work.
Thank you Jay Evans for proving them wrong.
Well, holy hell! That means I have OS X Lion running on my Tab.
Thank you for the replies. Although I understand that some of us here might be in a rather humorous mood, but just to clarify: my question was not about remote desktops. I still think there has to be a way to have windows running on GT. Another question in this regard is about virtual machines. Is there any kind of VM available for honeycomb tablets?
While it might be possible you wouldn't enjoy the results. Especialy if you want to run actual programs on it. It would be as slow as molassas and suck the battery dry in no time.
Better to buy a Win 7 tablet and wait for something like Bluestacks to run Android or wait for the ARM version of Win 8.
It won't happen, Windows is based off x86 architecture and Android Tablets and phones are based off of ARM architecture, Windows 8 will have support for ARM though, so wait a year
While the answer to your question is still 'no', it is possible to run Windows 95 or 98 using emulators. There is a QEMU port for Android ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6661598 ) that does it, and I've also heard that you can install windows using AnDosBox.

[Q] Windows 8 On Galaxy Tab 10.1

So I'd like some help in figuring out how to get Windows 8 on the Galaxy Tablet 10.1...Where do begin, in order to make this happen?
It's very simple actually:
1) put the Windows 8 DVD into the galaxy tab
2) press ctrl-alt-delete
3) dunk your tablet in a lukewarm solution of flour, salt, baking soda, and milk
4) make up a raindance
5) do 30 seconds of research, including a simple search of the forums, before you post
You can actually skip the salt in #3. Usless step.

That logic is retarded.
You could say the same thing about any development thread were people are porting roms/os's to non original devices.
The whole point of XDA is to push our devices to the limits, this sometimes means putting roms, operating systems and apps on our devices that were never designed for them.
@ OP
You will not see Win8 on non-windows devices until devs find a way to boot the ISO/build and also locate drivers for them. Once this happens you wont need to create topics like this as you will just need to look for a few seconds or use search to find topic.
SSD in the Galaxy
I would guess that the Samsung Windows 8 tablet and the Galaxy 10.1 would share some similarities within the chipset, which would probably mean windows 8 'may' already have quite a few drives for the tablet.
Is there a way to access the SSD drive on the Samsung Galaxy as a raw device rather than MTP?
Windows 8 on any current android tablet won't happen, there are only x86 and x86_64 builds out, so until Microsoft comes with an arm build, doesn't matter if you can boot an ISO since the tablet is not able to run x86 or x86_64 binaries

Damn, I forgot, after you add the salt, but before you do the raindance, you have to create an ARM build of Windows 8. I always leave out an important step...
It seems you forgot that you need to use a Mac on Mars to do the Windows 8 build

<serious>This is the key sticking point for now. Once Microsoft releases an ARM build for Win8, there may be a chance of getting it onto the SGT10.1.</serious>
Alternatively, if you can find a way of booting your Tab using a .iso stored on another Tab, whilst repeating the correct initiation spell 3 times backwards then it's not a difficult process.
Less likely. The nVidia chipset in our tablets (got the 8.9) is crap. It struggles with HC... let alone a windows OS...
Also, what people don't realize is even if Microsoft releases an ARM build of windows, it won't run their normal x86 apps either.
You'd be surprised how many apps use managed .net, those apps will run nicely(ish) on arm since you got a JIT in between the application layer and the kernel level
It will probably be more likely to get a windows 8 tab and attempt a dual install of Android. Android 1.6 I believe was possible, I did it on my NetBook but with no touchscreen it was pointless lol
Hi @ all,
it is funny to see how XDA people react on a simple question.
Simple question <-> a lot of know how and strange terms...
The little OP stays there and take the arms up to the head and says: ahhhhh
Everybody from us know how it is when the know how grows, more and more.
But please.... never forget where we all come from based on the first day with a mobile phone and XDA was online. We all are beginners, every day when the sun comes up.
BTW:
Question for the OP: why do you want to run windows on a tab? Because it is possible, or it is your favior to click on popups?
Thats a serious question.
NOTE:
In the past (long time go) we had have printers as screen. Oops, that was to far in the past.
I was really there. Oops, how old i am?

if you have an external HDD, how does it work with an android device like ss galaxy tab? does it recognize it? I don't have a tablet to try this. suppose I could try my phone, but it doesn't have a usb port and I don't have an adapter.
Try to use MacOSX...it's also LINUX based...TABUNTU re-writes the boot so that you see the familiar LINUX bootscreen, and something more,it recognizes our processor as x86,I know it's armv7 but That is possible and I am serious...

Gen 9 windows ?

I know this is not a dev thread but theres no where els to post this.
I'm probably not the first person to ask this for a tablet, but is there anyway on putting a version of windows on the gen 9s because the gen 9s have enough power to run windows EG: windows XP.
Is this even possible for a honeycomb tablet or not ?
The problem is not the "power" of the tablet but the CPU architecture they are running... Windows is designed to run on X86 Cpu's, our tablets are running an ARM Cpu... so you WILL be able to get windows on our tablets once windows releases windows 8, that has an ARM version... after that It's just a matter of being able to get the drivers for windows
Ok well I really don't like windows 8 from what I've seen from the preview videos on youtube.
I prefer the bare bones look of windows 7 or below. Hopefully there will be a way of getting that windows phone 7 look off of windows 8 otherwise i ant upgrading to windows 8 on my laptop or tablet.
That is just the Metro UI, you can disable it in the controle panel... Once you've done that, you basically have Windows 7 with some upgraded features, and some handy touch-implemented applications
But It's too early to know for sure if we can get it working on the G9 tablets, when It's released I'll give it a try
Well I hope you can disable it because I hate it.

yep! just a setting in the control panel, easy to get rid of.
You are somehow wrong.
In the X86 Developer Edition you are able to disable Metro,
but as the ARM Version will not have the normal Desktop (as no x86 Program will run)
you have to live with Metro.
But as every Linux for ARM out there is as "Basic" as XP, you can use that now.

you will not be able to run photoshop, counterstrike or any other well-known software. not if the maintainer of the software decides to create an arm-version.

Windows 7 dual-boot possible?

If I could install Windows 7 along side Android on this thing, then I'd replace my laptop as my main PC. Is this possible? Or if not, will it be in the future with Windows 8? I can wait a few more months, by then maybe the price will drop some as well ^_^.
No, Windows 7 will never be compatible on an ARM based tablet because it is made for x86/Itanium architecture.
Windows 8: Maybe- depends on the driver release but that is atleast a few months away so no one can really say.

Not even Itanium on Windows 7, it's x86/x64 only.
Windows 8 will be theoretically compatible but it remains to be seen whether it will actually be possible to install it on the Prime. Don't forget that Windows 8 on ARM won't run existing Windows programs away.
I'd be interested in an Ubuntu or such dual-boot.
can we have more windows threads please?
i mean really? as if the windows 8 threads concerning an OS which won't be out (in it's ARM form) until late next year weren't enough, we get ones about an OS that CLEARLY wont' work on ARM arch.
i don't say it often, but a quick search would have turned up the answer that x86 OS' will never work on ARM arch. ESPECIALLY ones that are not open source to be dismantled by a crazy person to be made to work somehow.

Since when did the Prime have a ARM processor that's a cheap CPU found in netbooks.
Officially there will never be a Windows OS for Transformer Prime, ASUS already have a tablet on the market for Windows and it's the Eee Slate EP121, and like the other Windows tablets it's big, heavy, and lack multitouch support for it's touchscreen and requires a stylus and it retails for a whopping $1400.
Unofficially anything is possible. Heck you can run Mac OS X on non Apple hardware thanks to the Project OS X team.

Because Windows 7 is made for x86/x64 processor architecture and not ARM.
There will be a extra super special version of Windows 8 written only for ARM processors
This version may run on the Prime. But not Windows 7.
If there was a way of running x86 code on ARM processors, Microsoft wouldn't rewrite Windows parts for the ARM architecture.

yes you can run x86 code on ARM cpus, through emulation software. It can be done on some ARM devices out now.
Go lookup Bosch x86 emulator for ARM.
I would like to see an ARM processor try to emulate x86 architecture. Anyone who's ever tried looking for emulation software knows that emulation is slow as hell. While PCs are faster than both PS3s and Xbox 360s, are there emulators? No. Why? Because you need much more power to translate the architectures to something the processor understands. This is why x86, a large and powerful architecture will never run on ARM properly. Even Bosch's website says so:
1.9.5. Tell me about performance when running Bochs.
Because Bochs emulates every x86 instruction and all the devices in a PC system, it does not reach high emulation speeds.

That is probably a development Prime from Asus to see how the higher clocks impact performance and battery life, and it seems they feel that 1.3GHz (up to 1.4GHz under certain conditions) is the sweet spot.

[Request] Nvidia Shield Tablet with Windows 8.1

As the title suggests, from the specs the device is given. This should be possible. Since the tablet is just now coming out, there are few forums for it. Even the Nvidia forums don't have a section for it, let alone XDA's forum. Which is why this is under modding.
The Nvidia Shield Tablet meets the Windows 8.1 requirements and uses intel chipsets. It's not a matter of if as much as when. Which is my request to the devs. Make the tablet either dual boot windows 8.1 and android or a full install of windows 8.1
Best of luck to you all.

Wait wait wait. The Shield Tablet has Intel chipsets? So I can run Desktop mode and say install Steam and play lower end games if this became feasible? I'm almost positive already that Nvidia said that the Tegra K1 has DirectX capabilities, I would LOVE to play games like Halo PC and other lower end titles on this tablet! Especially if someone made drivers that recognized the Shield Controller as an XInput device!
Which is why I started this thread. To see what the devs have to say about this. If there is any chance XDA devs can do this, it will almost certainly change the scope of gaming at home and on the go.
On a side note, there are already videos of the tegra K1 running the dolphin emulator. While previous K1 devices could only run games to a certain extent, over at the Dolphin forums the devs there are already discussing full speed emulation with almost all Gamecube games and some Wii games. For Dolphin it comes down to CPU strength since both consoles only run on 1 core. While the tablet is quad core, the software can't connect to the other 2 cores due to information process paths which leaves 1 core(They managed 2 cores as an option, not sure how) The Dolphin emu needs to atleast 2 times that to run gamecube(485mhz) games and 4 times for the Wii(800 mhz). The Nvidia Tablet is a 2ghz. Which just isn't strong enough to run wii games. So getting Windows ported over is important for overclocking the cpu efficiently to a level Wii games can handle, and pc games a bonus.
Nope, nope, nope.
Hey, guys. I just randomly ran across this thread, and I wanted to let you know that the reason why nobody has ported Windows 8 to the nVidia shield tablet is that it uses an ARM processor. Yes, this processor is made by Intel, but it is an Intel MOBILE processor, not a full x86 architecture processor.
So, although it may take some reading for you to understand the basic incompatibilities here, I will tell you that running Windows 8 on this thing is not possible in any universe. The only Windows OS which will run on an ARM processor is Windows RT. But everyone hates Windows RT, and not a single Windows RT device has been made since 2013.
However, on a happier note, Android 5.0 Lollipop does add support for x86 and 64bit processors. So, a future in which we have dual booting Windows 8 / Android tablets is not unfeasible.
