[Q] android 2.2.2 - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so 2.2.2 was pushed to me today what all has changed besides the crappy DELL launcher

I think they just added a few other things like the car dock application and some other stuff.
I my push contained Oovoo which I'm attempting to get rid. Can't seem to get my Streak rooted again though

I'm looking to see if signal strength suffers, I'm on 2.2 ,315,build 12332 and on the secondary streak, 2.2,340, build 14844 the latter has a much weaker reception. Any noticeable difference after upgrading to 2.2.2 OTA?

Skype Officially Arrives On The Android Market, No Galaxy S Support

Skype says they are working on the Galaxy S issues, but says it should work fine if you have Froyo. I guess the Captivate people running the leaked version will be happy. Hope we will either have the Skype fix, Froyo or a Dev who can work around the issue soon.
I can confirm it works well on Captivate with Android 2.2 JI6 from there
we still dont have official froyo so maybe someone can make or find a way for this to work, i mean we are supposed to have one of the best android devices in sgs and other work with skpe and this phone does not.
I managed to install it and it just brings the phone to a halt when i run it.
it is as if i was running a 50 mhz processor instead of the 1ghz we have
Shame really...

[Q] e10i Froyo update?

hI does anybody know about Froyo 2.2 for x 10 mini?
do we have custom 2.2. rom out?
Custom ROM
Not for the Minis, only for the X10 big.
hey, so, make it for mini, guys!
You know I have to say I'm astounded at Sony Ericsson's behavior regarding the maintenance of these phones, and their customer support. Google makes the damn software, the OEMs just have to modify it slightly to their taste and off it goes. I strongly suspected they were shelving us to focus on the Arc and beyond. Podcasts I listen to know talk about Samsung having done the same. Unbelievable. Using Android, they've created incredible hype for getting basic things back on a phone which have been around on normal software for years: copy and paste, 3G video calls, an alarm that functions with the phone off etc. They've made people get excited about getting the basics back. I'd love to say my next phone won't be Android, but it's killing the other software, so, little choice.
If a 2.2 version of any kind with enough working features comes out (custom, of course) I'd very crazy grateful.

[Q] Question about Honeycomb on the streak

I saw online that someone is working towards getting honeycomb to the Streak.
my question is what will happens with the phone functionality, can honeycomb handle calls and contacts and all that since is for tablets only
thanks in advance
Are you really sure that streak will get the update?????
at least custom port
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/08/dell-streak-gets-honeycomb-sdk-port-finally-looks-like-a-real-t/
Look in this same forum for a thread by DJ_Steve titled "hum dee ho hum me bored" or something like that.
He is the developer working on this. He is the guy who has made the previous custom ROMs for the Streak (StreakDroid.com v1.7.0 currently), and he has done tremendous work so far. I would imagine that when he gets it working, it will have to include phone call features for it to even be considered successful. I use my Streak as my primary device, so it would have to have the phone for me to consider using it at all.
However, that being said, it is not an "official" update of any kind. This is something he does in his spare time and he has been successful so far. He has already pulled some of the info out of the Streak 7" to improve his Streak ROM so far (lcd density over 200, for instance), and the Streak 7" would be a good candidate for Honeycomb (dual-core processor, etc). Therefore, I would assume that as Honeycomb becomes more availible, it will eventually get ported by DJ_Steve to the Streak 5, using all the good features of Honeycomb while still having phone features.
PS: Honeycomb is not EXCLUSIVELY for tablets, but it was designed with a focus on tablet usability. Meaning, it should work on phones just fine.
Locking this thread and moving to Q&A as Steve has a thread open on Honeycomb

I need your "Fascinating Opinions"

My brother is in the market for a new smartphone, so QUICK, tell me your opinions/experiences with this "Fascinating phone"
Overall it's a good phone however Samsung has not been updating the phone and as a result you will be dependent on community for upgrades...
The stock filesystem and gps drivers were ****ty and Samsung did not really deal with the issue as fast as they should have.
The effects were bad gps lock meaning you could not get an accurate read if at all for location based apps and performance below what the hardware should be capable of.
As of late the gps has been solved and if your willing to root your phone you can update your filesystem to remove additional lag and upgrade to a newer version of Android OS.
Considering the phone price has dropped in price its good but if you can hold out do so as the phone is roughly 6 months old meaning something better dual core or 4g, lte, is coming out very soon and you will be locked in for another 2 years
I would wait for the HTC Thunderbolt. It's suppose to come out in the next couple of weeks. It'll be a better option than the Fascinate.
If you need a phone today, then I would recommend the Fascinate but only if you are planning on rooting it and using custom ROMs. The stock fascinate doesn't even come with Google search. It comes with the MS Bing and you can't change that unless you root and install some Mods.
If you're not planning on rooting and Modding the phone, then I would recommend the Droid X.
i agree with modus, it's a great phone if you plan on rooting and modding it. even the droidx can be rooted and modded though, i was debating between the fascinate and the droidx when i needed a new phone a few months ago. the fascinate's screen is much better, in my opinion, at handling color saturation and sharpness when i compared it to my friend's droidx. i feel like the camera is better too, even though the mp count is lower. i think we have a better image sensor

You don't need to root to get google and the google search widget back on the phone, you just need to use Launcher Pro instead of Touch Wiz.

(Q) cm7.. why?

It seems that cyanogenmod is very popular with other phone users, and everyone seems to want it for the vibrant as well... but can i just ask what differs cyanogenmod from say trigger bionix or eugebes rom?
It seems like there is a crapton more work involved and that you could possibly brick your phone.

It's a pure aosp rom, that's why people go crazy about it. I ran cm on my g1 back in the day and it made it a completely different phone.

How you comparing trigger with cm7... think man, gb 2.3.3 and aosp... builded from scratch... code by code... it dont have a bit of tw. Well it dont even contain 2 frameworks like tw or any other...

Because it's a pure AOSP ROM. Build from scratch (well, a base).
Try it if you really want to know, except for GPS issues and not so good battery life, it is AMAZING.

CM is the granddaddy of AOSP ROMs. Cyanogen and his team are devs cutting actual code, writing their own device drivers and system apps. The entire CM ROM is compiled from customized source code.
Contrast this with the approach taken by ROM chefs who largely assemble their ROMs out of precompiled components borrowed from different releases of the vendor's ROM binary plus some configuration hacking where the odd component has been successfully decompiled.
That's not to belittle the achievements of the top chefs in any way - it's frankly astonishing that this school is viable at all, they seem to be operating mostly blind so it's more art than engineering in some respects.
But both approaches have their strengths. OEMs like HTC with access to detailed specs for their own hardware and low-level API's can produce better drivers and better apps that work closely rough drivers (like the camera app), but at the other extreme, AOSP code can sometimes include features the vendor left out or even implement a completely rethought and altogether superior design.
It's unfortunate that the closed source strategy of vendors with their signed modules often denies us the opportunity to combine the best of both. I'm particularly thinking of how juice defender can only control the toggling between 2G/3G radio on AOSP ROMs because the radio driver will only respond to code signed with the same key as itself. Aint signed code wonderful, eh?

Another reason is quick updates.
CM has updates before any major manufacturer and they're updating phones that manufacturers abandoned a long time ago.
I ran CM on my G1 and I've been seriously considering making the jump with my Vibrant any day now.
for me, it's long term support. once cm adds a phone, then that phone is typically going to be able to easily be upgraded to the newest android os and typically very shortly after it comes out. like many others, i had a g1 and because i cm i was able to get more life out of the device by ocing it and updating it 2.1 and 2.2.
go install cm7 and you will see what's good about it. the only major problem with it right now is no gps. after running cm7 i went back to biwinning and bionix, but that was short lived, i'm back on cm7 because having 2.3.3 > gps, for me.
Yep, CM7 4/21 nightly + cm7 Kang kernel, overclocked to 1.2 GHz + ondemand Governor equals the fastest I have gotten my Vibrant.
I have a Nexus S, right now it's stock 2.3.4 but when Cyanogenmod gets updated to 2.3.4 then for sure I will flash it. Why? When I already have stock? Well have you seen the the things you can do on that thing? You can add a music widget built right into the lockscreen, change themes with ease, change what the search key does, change the lock screen style, and the browser is improved ( incognito mode for one) you also get some fixes that Google almost never fixes, plus stock 2.3.3-2.3.4 disables Facebook sync with your contacts, however Cyanogenmod removes this thing that Google put... basically you can customize the thing like crazy. Plus it still remains stock, but the entire experience can change. I made my Nexus S look like Sense, changed how the notification bar and other aspects of the UI looked, changed the launcher to a themed launcher pro and changed the lockscreen to lense style, boom Sense style completely. Also if your device isn't stock you can install it and you make it stock, a problem with Sense is that a lot of the time the software disables things that some apps might need ( making things like wiimotes not work on it) but if you have Cyanogenmod, it eliminates that.
