Is there a way to make the hard keys (home, menu, back, etc.) stay lit up whenever the screen is on. I know it will use more battery but I have the extended battery anyway.

You might wanna have your phone checked, because mine stays on all the time when the screen is on.

Do your hard buttons ever light up?
They stay on when you have don't Auto Brightness checked... If you have it on they turn on when its dark. IE Proximity Sensor.

i tried on both auto and full brightness. It comes on when i cover the top of the phone with my hand which is the light sensor. I am running beta 1.4 of thunder and lightning ROM and adrynalyn 1.11 Kernel. Could either of those have anything to do with it? I never really noticed it before so it may be a new thing or it may have always been like that. Thanks for the replies.

On most of the reviews that I have seen on youtube on the evo 3d the capacitive lights go off after about 3 seconds yet they remain on the whole time on mines when using the phone and can be quite annoying especially at night since those lights are so damm bright! does anyone here who has applied both updates on their evo confirm if the lights remain on after updating.
here is a review on the 3d and you can see the lights turn off
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y85Rd5E6lV4&feature=related
Mine turn off but they are bright as HELL! Screen Filter is your best friend right now
did you apply both updates? and yes they are bright as hell which is why i want them to turn off on their own since i watch a lot of videos at night and the lights get really annoying. I tried screen filter but I don't want to use an app for something the phone should be doing on its own
I hear ya...We shouldn't have to run an app but for now, it's all we got. I haven't installed any updates, still on HBoot 1.3
I see, I wonder how many other people have the same problem. I will use the app for now but I will be going to the sprint store this week to see if other evos have the same problem.. if they don't I will be exchanging mine
I have 3 and they all do this.
annoying, they are bright lol
Really? wow! I know its a software issue since the app screen filter is able to turn them off. Whatever it is I hope htc fixes it quick I will be emailing them in a bit to see if they are aware of the issue.
Mine aren't turning off either. However I have a buggy 3D as it is, so I'm not surprised.

yea they did.. if you click on the link on the first post you can see the lights on the 3D go off after about 1-3 secs.
Just got an email from HTC and according to them the capacitive lights are affected by ambient light so the less light there is makes them stay on the whole time :/

They're fine too me. Not bright at all.
I noticed that my search button is always on. The others turn off in bright light but the search button dims and is barely on.

Might be light leakage from the actual led screen backlight
Yea my search button is the same as well so it must be from the backlight. Hopefully HTC lowers the light timeout in an update soon I'm kinda blind already and those lasers hitting my eyes aren't helping much lol

I finally got around to watching the green Hornet last night and I realized the capacitive buttons do not turn off. I remember a setting on the epic that controlled them but it was for the keyboard. I looked in the display settings and didn't see anything for them; am I missing something?

This was one of the biggest complaints when it was released. As of right now, no, there is no way of turning it off. Gotta wait till root. There is an app that some have been using (can't remember its name) that does it in a certain way.

I'm looking for this as well. I was able to turn off the LEDs on my HTC EVO 4g back in the day with LEDs Hack (ROOT ONLY) in the marketplace but it doesn't work for the 3VO. The capacitive buttons on the 3VO are bright as **** too.

I use "Screen Filter" In the market, works great other then the notification icon and I have learned to live with it.

I just tried this and it seemed to have issues consistently turning the button lights back on.
Now if only I could turn off the charging led light too.
Oh, I totally forgot about that. I just made a widget that dropped the brightness to 96.1 (highest i could get) and checked the box. Works great though it makes the magnifying glass light up a bit. Still, cool beans!

Yeah my search key lights up too lol I hate it, but its better then the BRIGHT lights.
Someone made a script to toggle capacitive button lights on/off. It does require temp root though. Haven't tried it myself.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176607
I've mentioned it a few times. Tasker+ screen filter.
As soon as a game/movie starts it goes to 96.1 and turns capacitives off. Then, as soon as you exit, screen filter gets turned off.
I also have it do that when I plug the phone in it pops up a menu asking "car, home, night" if I choose night screen filter comes on at 40% to dim the screen past its lowest level. (girlfriend is a light sleeper)

Just what the title says. I have been using my 4g LTE as an alarm clock, but the charging light is annoying in a pitch black room.
Thanks,
Shadowhawk2020
Flip it over while it's charging.
I do that now but light does escape and my wife is really sensitive to light when we sleep.
Not from stock that I know of.
If your rooted you may be able to use the app 'LED hack'. I used it religiously on my old Evo when one of the soft buttons' lights went out. I know there were settings for the notification light.
I haven't tested that app on the LTE though.
you need an app or mod for that. maybe root too
I turn mine off with RootDim (app) but you have to root the phone and install superuser.

Will check that out. Will be a nice tasker/nfc launcher fix
Tried out RootDim. It works, but only kills the charge led 3-5 mins at a time, I've been systematically trying the different triggers and none seem to keep it off.
And doesn't seem to have any means to be automated or even a widget.
I believe the old LEDsHack from the OG Evo was actually an always on service that would lock the hardware setting in the desired on/off position. At first glance this app seems to just flip the switch and walk away so the light comes back on the next time Android checks it.
But I've only been fiddling with this app for 15mins, will post back if I figure something out.
Spend about $10, if that much, and buy a cheap electric alarm clock and leave the phone in the front room or under something to block the light.

Hello guys, now its been almost a week since i've had my s3 but yesterday night before going to sleep, i just unlocked my phone in pitch black darkness and what i saw was white light originating from the left capacitive key extending to the screen which looked really bad like a screen burn or some kind of weird white patch on the screen as if i've cracked it, and if it were from both keys i cud have convinced myself that its normal but its only the left key! and its not at all noticable even in a little light and if your screen is not using a dark black background.. so what do you guys suggest me to do? can you guys check your phones in a fully dark room with black blackground and touch keys lit up?? and will my warranty consider this an issue and cover it? i feel so bad right now :/
I'll check later tonight, but I generally have those lights permanently off since my S2 as the intermittent on/off at every screen touch is an annoyance particularly when watching videos
I would suggest turning them off, the buttons are easy enough to find in the dark plus you save a little bit of battery.

It can only be seen in a dark room and with a black background on the phone.

I went to the dealer and they said that they would send it to the shop to check if it really had a failure, and if it had a hardware failure they would exchange it in one week!!!!!!!!!!! i will just stay with my phone as it is. It is more possible they will really screw it on the shop with something really bad to worry about, and I bet that the next one will have the same flaw or another even worst, so I prefer to stay with mine.
After my bootload unlock and root, my softkeys don't work, help!
working fine here not sure what would have caused that
I just realized its an auto lighting issue, cover your light and proximity sensor and they come on. Voila!
I find something new/different every couple hours it seems like.
My soft keys don't light up either but I've been looking around and it appears in all the reviews I've seen, they don't lite up. Can someone confirm or deny this please?

Mine do light up. It needs to be dark or you need to cover up the sensor.
turn off your lights or go in a dark room. They DO light up and if yours don't, you have an issue.

Mine have been intermittent. Sometimes they light up and most of the time they don't. I love it when they work, it really helps. I keep missing the right spot for the back button unless I can see it. Mine would turn on when I rotated the phone to landscape and then go off again when rotated back to portrait. For the last hour they've been on all the time.
I just tried the light sensor theory and it's 100% right. I shined a bright flashlight at the ambient light sensor and the buttons turned off. Took the flashlight away and the buttons turned back on.
edit: crap, I spoke too soon. They turned off again and now won't turn on no matter what I do. They came on for a few seconds and then went off again. Now they're still off. I look forward to seeing them again soon, just wish I knew what makes them stay lit up.

My keys don't turn on unless I'm in a totally dark room, with no lights on anywhere. Frankly I think it's pretty stupid. I can't see the keys at all for about 90% of the time I'm using it. It would be nice to have a switch to just turn them on and leave them on. Maybe a widget but would probably require root.

If this phone weren't so awesome in every other way the (un)lighted buttons would be a deal breaker for me. It's pissing me off although I know eventually I'll get used to where the keys are supposed to be. The few times when the keys light up makes me pissed off for all the times when they don't.
If your keys stay lit all the time there must be a setting somewhere to turn them on. ??
Maybe a poll would be appropriate - see if this is a big problem or if I have a defective phone.
Am I the only one who soft keys are always lit up?
By the way I like them to be lit up all the time.

Do you mean even when the screen is off?
Mine worked.. then stopped.. took 3 factory resets to get them going. But now have to be in a really dark room for them to work..
Not pleased but this phone rocks. Hopefully HTC fixes this. Just chock it up as early adopter pains..
P.S glad I'm not the only one this bug is affecting..

you can Restore to factory status, and try this again.:silly:
def. seems like the sensor to initialize the backlight for the buttons is very sensitive. Wish it would pop on in low light not complete darkness.
